india-u.s. friendship. india-u.s. friendship. thank you very much. >> and with that, good morning to you and welcome to "fox & friends" first on this very busy monday morning. i'm heather childress. moments ago, president trump wrapping up his first rally in india in front of his biggest crowd yet. more than 100,000 people actually packing this stadium in ahmedbad as the president took the stage with prime minister modi, the two world leaders touting strong trade and a stronger relationship. they talked a lot about that. you can see another embrace there. between the united states and india, during what is being referred to as the namaste trump rally. take a listen. >> america respects india and america will always be faithful

and loyal friends to the indian people. heather: people lining the streets to greet president trump in what was a red carpet style welcome as he kicked off what will end up being a two-day visit aimed at restarting relations and maybe making a trade deal. he talked about a deal in terms of military funding, some helicopters, other military equipment as well, to the tune of $3 billion. chief white house correspondent john roberts traveling with the president. he joins us with highlights from the rally and what we can expect from this point on, on his historic trip. good morning, john. i've been watching your coverage all morning long. >> reporter: good morning to you, heather. people are filing out quite quickly. this counts as the biggest crowd that president trump has ever spoken to. it was part campaign rally which is why you hear the rolling stones playing in the background and part joint speeches by two leaders about how they can

further the relationships between the two nations. while a lot of this today is pomp and ceremony and visiting important places like an ashram of mahatma gandhi as well as a visit to the taj mahal, president trump and prime minister modi talking about serious talks they will have coming up in the next 36 hours, including a lot of talk as president trump said about trade, about how to change the u.s. and indian relationship and how to make it benefit both countries. listen to what the president said. >> the prime minister and i will also continue our important discussions about how to deepen the relationship between our two great countries. both of us understand that when leaders put the interest of their own citizens first, we can forge strong and fair partnerships to build a safer

and more prosperous world. >> reporter: while today was a lot about mess a pleasantries, e are a lot of differences between the u.s. and india, especially on trade. president trump is hoping to get movement on lowering tariffs on american made motorcycles. there is a long way to go and it's unlikely that anything substantive other than that is going to happen during this visit. though you did hear the president say if they work together he thinks they can build a new, better, more fruitful trade relationship. one thing the president will be doing during this trip is inking a deal to sell about $3 billion, you mentioned this at the top, worth of naval helicopters to india, as well as almost $2 billion in other military goods. the united states wants to become the premier supplier of

military hardware to india, up until now russia has played this role. listen to the president, he's trying to convince modi. >> i believe that the united states should be india's premier defense partner and that's the way it's working out. together, we will defend our sovereignity, security, and protect a free and open indo-pacific region for our children and for many, many generations to come. >> reporter: one of the other issues that is of great concern to people in india of course is terrorism. the president got a lot of cheers for saying that he is leading -- leaning on pakistan to do something about terror groups that hide along the bore better between pakistan and india but there is a lot more to go on that front. tensions remain between india and pakistan but people here appreciated the fact that president trump said he is doing something about it. again, heather, from here he

goes to the taj mahal to visit there and then on to delhi for the hard work of the bilateral meetings. heather: we'll be covering those events. can i ask about the music? it really was quite something. we're ending now on the rolling stones. we also heard a little elton john in some of your earlier coverage. >> reporter: well, for a kim hours before the president and the prime minister arrived we had a lot of indian cultural presentations, dance, music, and then it became a campaign rally of sorts for the president, which is why we're listening to the rolling stones. look at this too. about 120,000 people were wearing these hats, people were marveling at how everybody was wearing a white hat. these were sitting on the seats when people arrived this morning, a little pr tribute, saying namaste trump. heather: john roberts, thank

you for your coverage all night long. we appreciate it. back here at home, speaking of campaign rallies and such, all eyes are on south carolina ahead of the democratic primary. senator bernie sanders is now the one to beat after his landslide win in nevada. aishah hasnie joins us with new questions surrounding the caucuses. you've been up all night long with our live coverage. >> reporter: it's been something, right? good morning to you. so sanders with his latest win in nevada, the other 2020 candidates are really going after him now. the buttigieg campaign now calling out the senator's win, claiming there are, quote, irregularitieses in the caucus results. in a statement, the campaign says, quote, explain anominallies in the data given how close the race is between second and third place, we ask that you take the steps before releasing any final data. the nevada democratic party responding saying, quote, we laid out our early vote and caucus day processes step by step and we communicated these

processes to all campaigns. buttigieg isn't the only one calling out sanders. senator amy clop char challenging -- klobuchar challenging democrats to consider if he is really the right choice here. >> about a debate ago or so we were asked does anyone have trouble with a socialist leading the democratic ticket. i think the stakes are so high in this race, that we have to have someone on the head of this ticket that can bring people with her instead of shutting them out. >> reporter: amid the attack, sanders got a boost from marianne williamson, endorsing bernie ahead of south carolina's primary on saturday. a new poll shows joe biden in the lead still with sanders and tom steyer trailing close behind, biden seeing a drop in african american support in that state and he's blaming steyer. >> we have steyer spending

lines that go into a country we can depend on, that option is going to be india, the fifth largest economy in the world. it really is an organically natural strategic partnership. heather: not only china but we have to talk about russia, especially when it comes to the defense deal that the president spoke about briefly. let's pull that up and listen, if anyone at home missed it. >> i am pleased to announce that tomorrow a representatives will sign deals to sell over $3 billion in the absolute finest state of the art military helicopters and other equipment to the indian armed forces. heather: talk about $3 billion worth of military equipment. why is that significant? >> well, again, i think it's mostly so india can play a larger, more powerful role in being a strategic stabilizer in the region, part of that's pakistan, a lot of that's china. but just being the big force in

the region that can do this. you mentioned russia. india's had a long relationship with russia and iran. what they've managed to do, a credit to the u.s. and india, they maintained ties with russia. they maintained ties with iran as they build strategic ties with the united states, because they realize what we're doing together is more important than nose relationships. if indians are honest, they would tell you that russia and iran as important strategic partners for india have really kind of moved in the second class status. heather: let's go back to the trade deals. let's bring this up for everyone at home. they can take a look on the screen about the u.s.-india trade balance, this is goods and services, looking back to 2018, $25.3 billion, 2019, $27.5 billion, and then it goes from there. so why would this be good for president trump? >> well, this is the tough part of the relationship.

again, why i admire these two leaders so much, they're working through this. india's a very close market for a modern economy. that's something they're really starting to get past, the historic and traditional barriers to how india business, that's tough for the indians. i've been there many times. nothing happens fast. so you've got to stick with it and i do believe eventually -- they were very, very close. they will get to a trade deal and that will be the first of many that will really bridge those two economies. when you pair the american and indian economies together in trust and confidence, that will be a global force that will be unstoppable. heather: interesting, kind of a book end to the rally in houston five months ago, howd oy modi ad now we have namaste trump. the time now is 20 minutes after the top of the hour. president trump celebrating the

strategist amy tarkanian and democratic strategist, wendy wallace. thank you for joining us. amy, i'll start with you, what about your reaction to his first visit there to india. >> it was very exciting. they were extremely complementary of each other. you could feel the pride coming through the camera. watch while both national anthems are being played, you can just feel the pride that india had in being able to share the beauty, the entertainment that they had displayed for president trump. i was actually getting chills watching it. heather: wendy, we continue to take live shots here, this is at the airport where the president will be traveling to his next stop, which will be a tour of the taj mahal, from there, as we mentioned, this is a o two-day

trip, trade in front and center in terms of the talks that will be going on. what's your take of the president's visit and what we've seen so far? >> i think the president has done a really good job of showing the pageantry that can come from having a show business president. there isn't a lot to show for what he's done for the american people, the talks continue and if you are trying to distract from the democratic primary and the energy that is happening here on the ground with voters, this is a good attempt. but i think voters are really still interested in all of the deliverables that the democrats are able to show that they can give them. heather: let's move on to that, actually, since you brought it up. say america i'll get -- amy, i'll get your response to that. in terms of what happened over the weekend, sanders sweeping the nevada caucuses, as the first candidate to win the

popular vote in all three early voting states. so is socialism more popular than realized? >> i don't believe that socialism is popular. i think unfortunately we're not educating our younger voters as well as maybe we should. i was discussing this in the green room earlier. for example, i had a friend who actually stormed the beaches of normandy and god rest his soul, he's now passed, but he would volunteer his time to go and teach schools about what he went through and i think that we need to do a better job at educating the dangers of socialism. heather: i want to bring this up. this is what sanders had to say in terms of making democratic voters nervous when it comes to a socialist being their candidate. >> you're also making a lot of democratic voters nervous. >> i don't think so. i don't want people to overstate this. millions of people standing up for justice can bring about the

kind of change that this country requires and i believe that has got to happen. heather: what is your take on that, wendy? >> i mean, i think millions of people standing up for themselves is exactly what the american political process is all about. i think what we are seeing here is that the democratic candidates including bernie sanders are connecting with voters. they're talking about the things that voters want to hear about, education, health care, jobs. i mean, we're still very early in this process and although senator sanders is doing quite well, he still only has about 2% of the delegates needed for the nomination. we're going to hear from voters in south carolina this week. their voices should very much be heard. they're a different demographic and electorate than we've seen in some of the early states and are more like what we'll see on super tuesday and i think for us, it can still be anyone's

game. heather: wendy, i would ask you then, what different type of demographic are you talking about and what do you think the result will be? >> first of all, i'm talking about african american voters who are prominent in south carolina and in the super tuesday states. i think one of the things we have to pay attention to here is that vice president biden has been leading in the polls in south carolina and their team has put in a lot of effort there and so i think we could see a scenario where the vice president comes out on top but i think a lot of the campaigns have been working hard, so it remains anyone's game. heather: we'll see what happens. wendy, final word -- i'm sorry, amy, final word. >> the vice president is back pedaling on the fire wall status in south carolina. i don't think he's expected to do very well. just like he had a very poor showing in nevada. heather: thank you for joining us. we appreciate it.

very busy morning. some other headlines quickly here, julian assange nodes a london courtroom today to fight extradition to the us. he faces 18 charges including espionage for publishing classified u.s. documents. if convicted he could face up to 175 years in prison. assange spent seven years as a refugee in ecuador's u.k. embassy before being sent to jail last year. former empire actor jussie smolett heads to court today to face charges that he lied to police last year. he's expected to plead not guilty. he also pleaded not guilty to 16 counts last year before the cook county state attorney's office suddenly dropped the case without a clear explanation. well, the time now is about 20 minutes until the top of the hour. disney hoping that the upcoming animated movie will have a magical debut but is onward

cases outside of china surging over the weekend with more cases in south korea, iran and italy. there are concerns of course that this outbreak could grow out of control. this comes after friday's selloff where we saw some losses there. the dow falling below 29,000 points for the first time in quite a while. we also are hearing that the trump administration is going to be putting aside some money to help fight the coronavirus. we don't know the exact number of that dollar figure just yet but hoping for some relief some time this week. heather: very interesting, i was thinking about it over the weekend, lots of mixed messages. we need to know what's up for real. there's an upcoming disney movie, called onward, featuring the first lgbtq animated character. >> reporter: it is a character, a purple cyclops will be a police officer who referencing

that shows bernie sanders there in the lead in california, so that would go to what you're speaking about. in terms of some of the other policies that you are campaigning on, we did have some video online that went viral of you, people trying to actually interrupt one of your rallies. you are of course for the border security, you're for doing more work for the homeless as you mentioned in california, among some other things we can bring up as we wrap up. >> yeah, absolutely. you know, my campaign slogan is god, faked famil -- god, family. everyone says that's very bold, especially in san francisco. it's not bold enough. we have to put those things back into america. we have to have a strong sense of patriotism. i believe we have to bring back faith in this secular san francisco that it is right now. these are the things that are missing in america and that the reasons why we're in the situation that we're in. so we do need to fight. we need to fight for unity.
