♪ ♪ ♪ leland: another now case of the coronavirus here in the united states. the hhs secretary saying on fox news that case discovered overnight in chicago, total number of confirmed u.s. infections now up to 62 people. welcome to america's news headquarters on this sunday. i'm leland vittert. the president and his team prepared everyone for this. get ready, it's not just one or two a day, could be 10 or 20 a day. kristin: in addition to the case that you just mentioned rhode island health officials announced the first presumptive case of coronavirus in their state. confirmed, the second

case on the east coast, so christina coleman has been tracking this outbreak from the very beginning and she joins us live. >> hi, kristin, well, the world health organization's latest number show 1700 new cases of coronavirus globally within the past 24 hours and federal officials are preparing for more people to get sick here in the u.s. so today more than 15,000 test kits are being sent out to health departments across the u.s. test for the virus, this comes after problems with one of the three components of an initial test that was sent out is that states and complaints that some places like california simply didn't have enough tests to adequately handle a possible growing number of cases. rhode island is now reporting its first presumptive positive case of coronavirus. this in addition to new cases in illinois and in santa clara county. here in california the santa clara county case is the county's fourth case and the woman infected is direct contact

of case officials announced on friday and the new cases come at the same time as first coronavirus death here in u.s. soil. a man in washington state with underlying health conditions. federal health officials are looking at community spread along the west coast in washington, oregon and here in california. they're also trying to track down the source of the illness in these different places. >> i really think we have to get used to seeing additional cases that are going to prop up in the community in which there was no identified source. the american people need to really real that and it's unrealistic to think it's not going to happen. >> the new cases that are presumed positive are pending lab confirmation by the cdc, also promising vaccine for the virus is developed, the vice president says it can go through clinical trials as early as six weeks from now because the fda has approved an expedited process, but a vaccine still wouldn't be ready at least until

next year. kristin. >> christina coleman live in california, leland. leland: president trump and his team says pretty simple, don't panic and the risk of real public health crisis for the american people is pretty low. rich edison at the white house with the latest on how the administration is responding to outbreak, good morning, rich. >> hey, good morning, leland, and the white house has just announced additions to coronavirus task force including dr. ben carson who is the housing and urban development secretary along with the commissioner of food and drugs and the director of the white house office of science and technology policy. much of this administration's response has been on travel, limiting travel to areas where there have been breakouts or problems, that's the case with the administration now warning americans against traveling to certain areas in italy, in south korea, implementing screening from travelers coming from those countries and also banning any americans from going to iran and barring anyone from coming into the country who has been to iran over the last couple of weeks.

then there's the effort within the u.s. as health officials say their concern is transmission between those who didn't go to affected areas. >> when you have diffused infections throughout the world as you just mentioned south korea, iran, italy and places like that, sooner or later they're going to be cases in your country that you can't directly trace to anyone. that becomes much more challenging about identifying the source. >> the food and drug administration is has also announced expanded testing within the u.s. to help identify patterns and see where this disease is going. also democrats are criticizing the administration for what they say is president trump getting caught flat-footed by the virus. >> this is a guy who doesn't know what he is doing, he doesn't know how to run the country, he's making us more unsafe the way he's responding to coronavirus. he's done virtually nothing well that i can see so i can hardly

wait to debate him on stage. i want people to see me standing next to him and him standing next to me. we will see who is sleepy. >> president trump says it's democrats who are politicizing this and calling democrats opposition or democrats talking about this as their hoax on this leland. leland: victory lap after winning south carolina last night. did the president say about that? >> he certainly did, he talked about a candidate not being in the ballot. the president tweet, quote, should be the end of mike bloomberg campaign, after worst debate performance in history of presidential debates. many have biden split up few voters taking many away. the president's campaign called democratic primaries a hot mess saying that all democratic candidates are the same, big government, socialist, radical

politics. leland: i seem to remember recalling the democrats calling 2016 election hot mess as well. thank you so much. kristin: with joe biden claiming decisive victory in south carolina, 2020 democrats are now turning their attention to super tuesday. they're campaigning in several key states this weekend ahead of what will be a make or break day for a number of these campaigns and our correspondence are right there with them. we have fox team coverage, steve harrigon, we've got jacqui heinrich in san josé where bernie sanders is going to be rallying later on today but first let's start with mark meredith. he's down in virginia beach, short drive away from where joe biden will be this evening, hey, mark. >> hey, kristin, you're right, joe biden's campaign will be coming to southern virginia

later today. there's still lot of questions about biden's candidacy after what we saw in iowa and new hampshire and nevada, in fact, biden was asked about that by fox's chris wallace earlier today. >> i think it's about the message and i think that people know who i am. although 41 to 1 in south carolina and other places. nothing like they have raised. $18 million this month, just 5 million overnight and so i think things are picking up but we will see. >> we will see. this afternoon biden will be joined by famous virginian politicians including tim cane. announced endorsement for biden on friday and also last night as votes were being counted in south carolina the former governor of virginia announced endorsement for biden and put on why he was endorsing. this is virginia politics.

in virginia we have taken state to red to blue in a decade by running campaigns that appeal to majority of voters, raising wages and improving education. that's exactly how democrats win virginia and the white house in 2020 and joe biden leading our ticket, of course, virginia one of those states that so many people will be watching not just now with super tuesday but come november. the biden campaign is a fly-in and fly-out situation. >> it's cold. josé, hi, jacqui. >> senator bernie sanders shaking off a distant performance in south carolina. early voting has been underway in california here for several weeks so that could to some extent benefit sanders since this all has been going on, since before biden's big win in south carolina. senator sanders congratulated the former vice president last night but this morning he down played biden's lead among african-american voters claiming his campaign was ahead in polls especially young people and he shot back at biden's suggestion in victory speech that a sanders nomination would hurt down ballot. sanders reframing the argument on abc this week. >> i've known nancy pelosi for a very long time. i'm part of the democratic leadership of the united states senate with chuck schumer. it is my view that every

democratic candidate for president, no matter what wins, this nominating process, i hope it's me, we will come together because we all understand that donald trump is the greatest threat to this country in modern history of this country. >> sanders is, however, enjoying some huge fundraising numbers. his campaign announcing today it raked in more than 46 and a half million dollars this month which would be using for ad buys in states in march. nearly 3 quarters of the february donations came from voters in super tuesday states. now sanders is still ahead of biden in terms of delegates. 56 to 48, but biden's jump certainly puts pressure on sanders' campaign. he's hope to go take a big chunk of california's 415 delegates. he's hosting two big rallies today. one this morning, this afternoon, your time in san joée and then another one later on tonight in los angeles. leland.

leland: so many media markets to compete in out there. jacqui heinrich will be on the trail throughout california, jacqui, thank you so much, kristin. kristin: several candidates including joe biden are either in or about to be in another super tuesday state today. they've taking to the annual selma bridge crossing jubilee in alabama. steve harrigan joins us live. what are we expecting today? >> a big crowd begin to go gather in the bridge, of course, the scene of bloody sunday, 55 years ago, there were about 600 civil rights demonstrators marching peacefully over that bridge when they were attacked by law enforcement with clubs and also with teargas driven back brutally. some of the images that day cheered into american history. helped lead to the quick passage of the voting rights act of 1965. a lot of candidates expected to take part in the reenact a few hours away.

we saw mayor bloomberg this morning at union breakfast. he said he's optimistic about the super tuesday primaries but he said when it comes to race, there's still a lot more to do. >> the average black family's wealth is one tenth of the average white family's wealth. just think about that. we can sit around and ring our hands but i'm determined to do something about it. >> alabama is one of the 14 states on super tuesday. they'll be awarding 52 delegates. that is just 4% of the total haul on super tuesday. kristin, leland, back to you. kristin: steve, thank you, we will be streaming the selma bridge event live on foxnews.com at 2:30 p.m. eastern. leland. leland: let's look at what we can see playing out on super tuesday. we bring democratic strategist former adviser to bill and hillary clinton presidential campaign richard goodstin,

appreciate you joining us from new york. you were there in 1992 when bill clinton said new hampshire made bill clinton the comeback kid. did south carolina make joe biden the comeback kid? >> remember he was second but he had been written off, bill clinton in 1992 before new hampshire. i will tell you, leland, i can't remember a primary maybe with the exception of the iowa caucuses in '08 that obama won. i can't remember a primary going back decades that has really so turned the dynamic of a race like last night's did. how many days ago was it, yesterday, when everybody said that bernie was the presumptive favorite. i don't think he would say that anymore. and what we now know that pretty much over four contests -- leland: would we not say that and hopeful and wishing thinking of centrist democrats that bernie is no longer the presumptive favor. he's up nationally in the polls, he's up in california, competitive in texas,

competitive in virginia. >> right, so obviously we will see what happens. california votes kind of really -- counts its vote late so even if he does well there i have a hunch that the news is actually going to be those primaries where the ballot ends at 7:00 p.m. and we know kind of at least in the east what's happening. that looks like a lot of biden wins. my answer to you is, leland, that in all the four contests moderates if you aggregate them, have done better than sanders and even warren, if you put her in his camp. so once it becomes a two-person race and i realize bloomberg is still in it and if it comes down to biden-sanders race, i think we kind of know what the dynamic will be and bodes well for joe biden. leland: that's certainly how biden was setting up in fox news sunday today, take a listen. >> if he's the nominee, i will support him but i think it makes it very difficult down ballot

and this is no great secret to anybody, you can't run as an independent socialist, now a democratic socialist and do particularly -- expect to do well in states that we have to win. leland: that argument might work well inside the beltway with centrist democrats, but how does that argument, how do you translate the argument to the bernie bros in berkeley who are going to be voting on tuesday? >> right, you don't, but here is what translates. what translates is that most democrats in california and everywhere else want desperately to beat donald trump and they know that if they have somebody like bernie sanders at the top of the ticket, there's a reason that the house flipped in 2018 and every single one of those 40 house democrats that turned a red district blue, not one of them has endorsed bernie sanders. many of them have endorsed joe biden because they buy into the notion and we have now national news thanks to fox news and others, so people in berkeley

leland: there are now 3 unexplained cases in the west coast, meaning doctors don't know how people contracted it or exposed. they call that community spread. dan springer outside the nursing home in kirkland, washington where 2 people connect today -- connected to that facility tested positive for the virus. >> community spread simply means that health officials don't know exactly how these people contracted the virus, they didn't travel to an impacted area and they didn't have any close contact that they're aware of to somebody who has traveled recently and describe the two cases in long-term care facility in kirkland, washington, a 70-year-old woman, resident patient and healthcare worker also a woman at the life care center of kirkland tested positive for the coronavirus, neither had done any traveling in the last few months or had

close contact with someone who had, the whole facility is essentially on quarantine, no visitors, no new residents. patients are being kept in their room and monitored. several residents have some flu-like symptoms. if they worsen, they'll be transported to a hospital for testing. now 32 firefighters and police officers who made calls here over the last week are also being quarantined and monitored. also 16 nursing students from a nearby college who came to the facility for training recently are waiting to be told what to do. the school is currently being disinfected. cairo tv is reporting that the united states postal worker is the latest to test positive but the threat to coworkers and the public remains low. >> we expect to see increase in cases locally. it's very important for everyone to remember that 80% of the cases are mild, patients frequently don't even need to seek health care, you can think of it as a bad influenza-like infection. however, as these recent cases

demonstrate, it can be severe. >> 3 schools in the pacific northwest are being impacted. two in seattle area and one outside in portland, oregon. jackson high school in milk creek washington will be closed on monday as crews work to disinfect it. a junior there tested positive on friday. he's feeling better, though. another high school here in area had false alarm. that school will reopen on monday and an elementary school in oregon will be closed until at least wednesday, a staff member there who does not know how she was exposed to the virus tested positive over the weekend. meantime back here in kirkland, the resident here, the 70-year-old woman, she's in serious condition and the healthcare worker to be in stable condition. leland, you also know about the 50-year-old man who died the first coronavirus death in the u.s. he has underlying health issues. that death occurred late friday night, leland. leland: as you pointed out so

much more dangerous for those who are older and have some underlying health condition just like the flu. kristin. kristin: for more on this and how you can keep yourself safe, let's bring in senior john hopkins infectious disease expert dr. amij adalhal. i apologize. we talked about it over the break. in particular what dan springer was reporting out of washington state -- >> i'm very concerned about the nursing home outbreak because that's a place where you can have virus, ample opportunity to spread and because of the people that live at those types of facilities. they are often elderly and often immuno compromise and other medical conditions. they can be hard to contain and hard to deal with the severity at the level. the community spread is something that we've been expecting. we know that that was happening. we knew that the tests. >> really not design today pick up mild cases and community

spread, everything keyed into travel and that will become less important as the outbreak unfolds. kristin: do you think that there may be a lot of people out there that may have contracted the coronavirus and have it right now and they just don't know it. they may think they have cold or a flu? >> that's a really interesting hypothesis that people have been talking about. we know that this is really indistinguishable from the cold and flu from symptom basis and even without diagnostic test and we did have a flu season and may have been mixed with flu season many cases of coronavirus and the data coming from the washington cases are showing this quite likely was spreading in the community in washington for some weeks before that, so i do think that we have cases all over the united states that are mixed in and will only come to know that as we ramp up diagnostic testing. kristin: yeah, and i guess that's part of the reason that diagnostic tests are so critical. we know they have been in short supply. the trump administration, secretary azar on the network saying more tests are on the

way. what are you hearing about is it -- are thesest it is getting to where they need to be fast enough? >> they are starting to trickle out and we had a lot of supply bottlenecks in the beginning and problems with test kit sent to health labs. we know that the fda has given complex labs, universities, commercial labs the ability to give tests and significantly increase capacity. we are also allowing people to test cases on their own once we get the tests in hospitals, so we will start to see more cases an we expect to see more cases and will help us understand the severity and case fatality ratio that we are dealing. i suspect the fatality rate will go down. kristin: i want to pop up something that the surgeon general posted on twitter yesterday, he says, quote, seriously, people stop buying masks, they are not effective in

preventing public, but puts them and security at risk. some pretty pointed words, some pretty strong language from the surgeon general, do you agree with him? >> i do. we have told people not to buy the masks and i think the surgeon general has the moral authority to speak directly to the public and say do not buy the masks because you're actually causing supply constraints and you're not going protect yourself, so it's really important that we make sure that our healthcare providers have proper supply chains to get these masks where they need them and we are hearing about shortages and we don't want companies ship production to make mass because the public is hoarding them. the masks aren't for general public, they are for healthcare providers. kristin: noted. i'm one of the people to see if i could get a mask and ordered masks last week and i did get them but i promise i will not be getting them anymore.

kristin: former vice president joe biden is hoping his decisive victory in south carolina will give his campaign the much needed boost that he's been waiting for, but with less than 48 hours until super tuesday, is there enough time for him to

fully capitalize on last night's win? we go to bryan llenas live in colombia, south carolina and bryan, a late night for joe biden and a very early morning, how is he and his campaign doing today? >> hi, kristin, well, look, former vice president joe biden is already making the case that his big win here in south carolina has led to real momentum. biden is saying this morning that his campaign has already begun to see changes including the fact that they are getting more fundraising money. this month alone biden says they've raised $18 million including $5 million yesterday alone. biden won last night here in south carolina over the front runner, current front-runner senator bernie sanders by nearly 30 percentage points but he did also by winning 63% to have black vote here in the palmetto state. biden's campaign believes this victory will prove he's the candidate that can bring together a diverse coalition needed to beat president trump.

he's also making the case that if he wins democrats can take back the senate, but if sanders were to win democrats will lose congress and the white house. >> if he's the nominee i will support him but i think it makes it difficult down ballot and this is no great secret to anybody. you can't run as independent socialist and now democratic socialist and do particularly, expect to do very well in state that is we have to win. look, if people aren't looking for revolution, they are looking for results. bernie talks about a revolution. let's get results. >> about a third of the total delegates up for grabs when 14 states votes and polls showing that bernie is leading in most of the states including california and texas. if sanders can win in latino-heavy states and improve in the south say like in north carolina with black voters it could counter biden's momentum. >> he needs to show that hi can

crack the vote of people of color and he will be supported by african americans and if bernie sanders can do that on super tuesday, that's one of the early nails in the coffin for biden. >> bottom line, though, is that biden is at a disadvantage going into super tuesday. he had not visited super tuesday state in more than a month and sanders has spent some 13 and a half million dollars on ads in those super tuesday states. biden he just started airing the ads this week and you take all of that, though, and you realize that the person who spent the most money in south carolina, tom steyer, that didn't help him, and at the end of the day he decided to bow -- vow out of the race in south carolina. kristin: bryan llenas in south carolina, leland.

leland: high profile sentencing in the college emission's scandal. infamous test taker mark rodell to be tested, pleaded guilty on april, claiming that he was other people. he could potentially serve up to 20 years in prison. little bit more on this and the parents that who we hear from the next couple of weeks attorney and partner of law firm. >> good to see you, leland. leland: if you're the test taker's attorney is there any way to get sympathy? >> not really. this is cheating and lying. that's what this is. this is a fraud and quite frankly i don't think there's going to be much sympathy for them because really it's about the elitist and the wealthy and how they can pay people to take chair exam.

this is pretty bad when it comes to crimes. it really is. leland: we are putting up now the sentences so far, some of those involving the parents who got a month in jail, different number of days, et cetera, et cetera we go forward and lori loughlin, one of the big names to look going forward. that name on october 5th trial group. evidently she we wanted to delay a little bit. does it matter which groups you're going in or would you rather be on your own? >> you certainly want to be engaged where someone engaged in more wrongdoing than you have. leland: i have to outrun you. >> that's a perfect andy. what you can do is sit in the back of the courtroom. i'd rather have my client who doesn't have -- a big of a problem and let them look at lori. many times juries will not want to nail everyone of the defendants and quite frankly with lori loughlin half a

million dollars that was paid and they are claiming there's new evidence and the prosecutors are withholding evidence but the bottom line is -- >> leland: i want to get to that evidence. they continue to ask me to tell a fib and not restate what i told my clients as to where their money was going to the program, not the coach and that it was a donation and they wanted to be a payment. essentially they are asking me to bend the truth. that's statement created by singer saying the fbi is twisting his arm. that could not play well on cross-examination. >> oh, it can't play well at all. what frankly if you can actually turn singer and make him to be a liar or fraudstore would --

tenney is tracking the global response. it's a pretty big effort. >> yes, the number of cases are going up by the day. south korea has more than 500 new cases. iran's count is up by nearly 400 and apart from those countries romania, iceland, reported first confirmed cases as well. total number of countries affected to 62. governments across the globe are taking measures to stop or at least slow the spread of the coronavirus. today in northern italy officials reported more than 400 new cases since yesterday despite having essentially quarantined entire towns for past week but they said it is still too soon to know if those measures are enough. >> as we said yesterday, the effective measures taken last week is something that we do not expect to happen 8 to 10 days. it takes 13 to 14 days understand the effect and exactly the isolation time.
