>> bill: the coronavirus affecting 93,000 around the world. the outbreak spreading to 77 countries. new cases across the u.s. experts say it could be more than a year until a vaccine is ready. doctor, good afternoon to you. before i get to the questions from our viewers and they have many and good ones, too, there's a new rule that allows doctors in a room or receiving room in a hospital. if they suspect the patient may have the virus, you can test for it. >> really good and important step. the problem is making sure we have the test kits that they
12:56 pm
need to make sure that they can do those tests. it's a cumbersome process but we opened up avenues for it. >> bill: if you test more, you'll find more cases. >> yes. >> bill: and if one gets coronavirus and recovers, how immune is that person from attracting the disease again? >> we're not sure. the issue is we're going to have to see whether the virus changes. for example, it could mutate into a different form in which case you wouldn't have immunity. so much we don't know including behavior of the virus. it's possible but nobody would want to guarantee that. >> patricia ellis says, what is the best way to prevent senior citizens from getting it. >> those are the citizens that are most at risk of coronavirus. if they get it and older and have any pre-existing medical conditions, especially conditions involving the lungs,
12:57 pm
they need to be particularly careful in terms of who is visiting them, hand contact, the typical kinds of hygiene that we recommend because of frequent hand washing. use of purell-type products and keep ill people away from the elderly. >> bill: good advice. mark writes who and what do we truth? the president says don't panic. italy has closed universities and schools for two weeks. how does that help if there's no vaccine? how can you stock up enough food to last through this? sounds like there's some panic. >> very complicated question. a lot of people are asking doctors, myself included what is it that they we need to do and depend on leaders that provide us in terms of information. the most important thing is credibility. we can't have leaders saying things that are contradicted by health experts. once we do that, we lose credibility and start disbelieving the messages that
12:58 pm
are very important. there's lots to think about on what to stock up, when we will be closing schools and so on. >> bill: brenda sellers, can this come in on products that we buy and get hope to open? >> that's a very tough question. the fact is that the virus can exist and live on a service for a few hours. by the time you get food to your home, even if it's touched by somebody that might be contaminated or infected, it's probably safe. >> bill: here's my questions now. >> going to get tough. >> bill: two weeks ago, you didn't have questions. you don't have many more now. why is that? >> like for example, in the u.s., we just started doing testing. south korea has tested 65,000 people. we've test add few hundred. so we don't know much about the behavior of the virus. i don't know any more today, bill, than we knew two weeks ago about what the incubation period is. >> bill: so you need more time
12:59 pm
to figure that out. >> more time and more information and more work from the scientists that get us the information we need. >> bill: if the incubation was 14 days, is that enough? >> i don't. could be three weeks. there was evidence that one of the cases in california had that virus for at least six weeks or maybe more than that. >> bill: doctor, thank you. irvin redliner. thanks. >> thank you. >> bill: this just in. the white house announcing that president trump will award the medal of freedom to retired four-star general jack keane. jack keane is a fox news senior strategic analyst, the nationist highest civilian honor for him. president trump said to give out the award next week. jack keane, a friend and colleague for years here at fox. well-deserved. jack keane is a committed american to getting it right. well-done. we salute you.
