first" on this monday morning. i'm heather childress. thank you so much for starting your day with us. we certainly appreciate it. we hope everyone had a great weekend. we begin with a fox news alert. the cruise ship quarantined for coronavirus will dock in california today. it's been hovering off the coast with thousands of passengers for days. aishah hasnie is live for us in studio with what happens next. good morning, aishah. >> good morning. right now, california's governor stressing the team doesn't know exactly when the grand princess cruise ship will dock in oakland but it should happen sometime today. there are more than 20 confirmed cases on-board. passengers who need medical attention will get off first, but the coast guard has medivaced a second pang passengepassengerwith a medicalt related to the virus. the rest of the people on-board will go to military posts in california, texas, georgia for

testing and a 14-day quarantine. they're already getting ready for isolation. >> they gave us last night a mental health form for those folks on the ship that are having difficulties dealing with the stress of being kind of locked down. >> we've got at least half a bottle of wine left for today. [ laughter ] >> this is happening as a lawsuit has been filed alleging the princess cruise liner knew someone from a previous trip was showing coronavirus symptoms yet made the consistent sheas decision to -- conscious decision to continue sailing the voyage the same day, welcoming 3,000 passengers on the infected ship. the state department warning those now, especially those with underlying health conditions, not to get on a cruise. and things are only getting worse at the washington state nursing home at the center of an outbreak. three new deaths there, on top of at least 13 deaths linked to that facility so far. the center spokesman says

they're in triage mode, confirming 70 employees are sick as four more residents are hospitalized. >> we've had patients who within an hour's time show no symptoms, to going to acute symptoms and being transferred to the hospital. we've had patients die relatively quickly under those circumstances. >> and the bill and melinda gates foundation reportedly offering thousands of home testing kits for people who suspect they have coronavirus in the seattle area. heather. heather: thank you, aishah, we appreciate it. well, two schools are closed today after the family of a coronavirus patient breaks quarantine. the father and sister of missouri's first case attended a father, daughter dance on saturday night. they claim that they didn't know about the confirmed diagnosis until after they got to the dance. and they immediately left after getting the news.

the family's older daughter came down with the coronavirus after studying abroad in italy. well, new york is not ready to shut down public transportation amid the coronavirus outbreak. >> at this time, there's no reason to close down mass transit. i think it depends on how well we do containment, find the positives, quarantine the positives, contain it the best you can. if you have to do a massive close-down like china, like italy, that's going to hurt this nation's economy. heather: new york officials are urging sick people to stay off subways and busses and avoid big crowds as crews increase sanitizing protocols. new coronavirus cases are forcing several colleges and school districts to shut down including columbia and hofstra universities. there's the list for you right there. well, hundreds gathered for

church services in member of the missing colorado boy, ganon stalk. they honored him by wearing his favorite color, blue. he disappeared from his home in january. officials do not believe that he's alive, unfortunately, but his body has not been found. his stepmother is charged with murder. she's expected to appear in court on wednesday. days after a tornado destroyed their church, worshipers hold sunday services among the rubble. ♪ >> the national church setting up a tent in the parking lot to pray. the tornado ripped off the roofs of two of the church buildings last week. despite the devastation, the community's faith remains strong. >> when i arrived here, i began to pray and asked god what do i

cruise ship will come into the port as we are still working out theethe enormity. we're doing this is in the appropriate way, it's ready, aim, fire, not ready, fire, aim. heather: the grand princess cruise ship set to dock in california this morning as the golden state prepares to handle the 21 cases on-board. more than 3,500 passengers and crew, many untested, will head to military bases across the country. what happens next for the huge influx of potential patients? fox news medical contributor dro discuss. thank you so much for joining us. >> my pleasure. heather: let's begin with what the next steps will be for these passengers. we can bring this up as we continue to discuss it. >> i'm glad they're going to military bases. there's facilities there in order to separate them out, that's most important. the biggest problem with a cruise ship as we learned from the previous cruise ship, the diamond princess, is the

conditions on the ships is not ideal no matter what you do in order to prevent the spread of a respiratory virus. they can't keep it disinfected enough, people are not separated enough. that's the key and that's what will happen at the bases. separate them out, test them repeatedly, not just one time and look for signs and symptoms. heather: in terms of the military bases themselves, how are they prepared to handle it. >> they are prepared. they've always prepared military bases for possible incoming of military officers that have had medical problems. it's what we call triage. they're equipped to triage from the sickest to the least sick to those with no symptoms at all. heather: someone over the weekend tweeted out her grandfather is on the ship, he's an 86-year-old veteran, he was in i think it was world war ii, retired u.s. veteran. she said he has not been diagnosed with it and he needs to get off. >> that's really where he should go. again, the alternative would have been local hospitals or even though there are great

hospitals in the area, they're already full, most of them. they're not equipped even if they have a plan in place for a surge if we have an influx in the united states and it's not the same as a military base. heather: what about people not being tested on-board. president trump retweeted a story we did here at 4:00 a.m. on friday saying the test kits were being dropped and he said people were being tested on the ships. >> that's crucial that they be tested right away. get them off the ship and test them right away, that's key. we did hear last week that we're having 4 million tests available around the country and i've checked several labs, by the way, quest diagnostic lab and several universities will begin testing today. we'll see a lot more tests being done. heather: they were also being tested on the ship. >> absolutely. we should be seeing that over the next day. that's also crucial, the point we've just made. you don't want people on the ship remaining that have the coronavirus. heather: very important to

point that out. that is being handled in the most appropriate way it can be. let's talk about what italy is doing, locking down a quarter of its population under a month-long quarantine. are these drastic measures necessary? >> the cases are rising in italy. it's over 7500 cases right now, over 350 deaths. it is a draconian measure. i have to tell you the truth about this, it's never been proven that locking down an entire region of 16 million people actually works. people panic, supply lines are cut off, people that are medically ill don't get the care they need as quickly as they should. there's huge downsides to this. when you reach that point, it's because they're not controlling the outbreak. heather: here's what a spokesperson from the national institute of allergy and infectious diseases had to say on the possibility of something similar happening here in the u.s. >> it's possible. we evaluate it every day.

you don't want to alarm people. given the spread we've seen, anything is possible. that's the reason we have to be prepared to take whatever action is appropriate to contain and mitigate the outbreak. >> what dr. fauci said in the same interview, is that elderly people and those with chronic underlying conditions should not travel on long trips, on planes, on ships. that's where we are right now, it's something called ca cacoon. we try to protect the people that are most at risk. that's what we're doing here, cutting down on concerts, cutting down on travel. it's to protect those most at risk by decreasing the amount of virus that's spreading. heather: what about schools shutting down? >> that's in the news right now. that shouldn't happen unless you think there's a risk of an outbreak at that school. i don't want all the schools closing down. heather: common sense measures.

heather: welcome back to "fox & friends first." hillary clinton takes a dig at her former rival, bernie sanders, as she weighs in on the 2020 election and vp picks. >> i will support the nominee of the democratic party. i do not think he's our strongest nominee against donald trump. >> is that an endorsement of joe biden? >> i'm not endorsing. i would love to have a woman on the ticket, finally, again. heather: clinton says she hopes sanders' supporters will back joe biden if he is the nominee. bernie sanders campaign is accusing joe biden of pushing for a sit-down format at the next presidential debate. sanders campaign complained about the request during a call with cnn which is hosting the arizona debate next week. biden's campaign denied the claim, saying sanders is trying to distract from, quote, the weakness of his record and

ideas. sanders is a year older than biden and faces questions about his age after suffering a heart attack last year. and another republican harassed. elise stefanik was targeted with a vicious note. it's the response from democrat howard dean that is triggering outrage. carley shimkus is here with how it's playing out on social media. good morning. >> good morning. on saturday, a note was left on the congresswoman's car that said rot in hell, fascist pig. she posted it to twitter. she said i understand that respectful and passionate policy disagreements are foundational to our democracy but this note is sad hatred. we are praying for the author. former vermont governor howard dean responded saying this, i don't condone this but as you sow, so shall ye reap. you are a shame to your district

political discourse in washington and the lawmakers themselves. overnight, texas senator ted cruz and arizona congressman paul gosser announced they will self quarantine. they say they interacted with an infected person at cpac which happened roughly a week ago. neither said they are showing symptoms. senator cruz said the medical authorities said the odds of transmission from the other individual to me are extremely low. members of cpac say the risk to other attendees remains low. >> i want to reiterate nobody at the conference should panic about what happened. we'll take all the necessary steps. >> reporter: fox news learned congress is preparing for the possibility of having to tele-work in light of the virus. the house is expected to begin working on preparing infrastructure for such a scenario. democratic leaders nancy pelosi

moment tom we have. -- momentum we have. i think we're going to do well and i think we're going to beat biden. >> beat biden in michigan? >> yes, i do, yeah. heather: so can sanders rescue his campaign in a state that flipped for trump. here to debate, democratic strategist, angela dorn and committee to defend the president chairman, ted harvey. thank you for joining us. angela, begin with that question, what do you think? >> well, first of all, thank you for having me, heather. i think that bernie sanders can do a lot in michigan. he's shown that in 2016 when he beat hillary clinton there and he's taking the right action this time around. he's gotten an endorsement from reverend jesse jackson which is an important endorsement to get. we know that labor supports him and a number of people are looking at him as being a possible leader in the primary campaign. heather: let's take a look at polling we have, african american support in the michigan democratic primary for biden is

40.6%, compared to sanders coming in at 15.9%. so can he overcome that? >> i don't think so. that's a pretty huge voting block for biden to have in the pocket going into the primary. that's not the only voting base there. like angela just said, the labor union vote is going to be a huge vote as well. it will be interesting. i think biden will pull it off. bernie will get enough votes coming out of michigan that it will continue his strength going forward and he'll be there to fight another day. heather: angela, we have 125 delegates up for grabs in michigan and right now biden in the lead at 54% with sanders coming in at 33%. so it's a big chunk of delegates to take away. >> yeah, it's a huge chunk. and let's face it, we're all here prognosticating but nobody knows what's going to happen at the end of the day. whoever wins michigan, that's another step in the right direction in terms of being the democratic nominee given the

diversity, labor, african americans, working class folks of all kinds but who knows we have a lot of people throwing their support behind biden. the latest, kamala harris, listen to this. >> i am with great enthusiasm going to endorse joe biden for president of the united states. we need a leader who really does care about the people and who can, therefore, unify the people, and i believe joe can do that. heather: all right, ted, what about this? the establishment, all of these candidates jumping behind biden. >> well, i think it's interesting that senator harris is endorsing enthusiastically after she ran her entire presidential campaign against him, saying -- pointing out how bad his history has been on civil rights issues. so i think it's interesting that she's so excited. it tells you how desperate the democrat party is to circle the wagons behind somebody who they can bring forward to try to beat

trump. i'm sorry, with biden's slip-ups over the last couple weeks, this is getting embarrassing now and i think the democrat party is cutting off their nose to spite their face by circling the wagons around biden. heather: what about that? >> i disagree. i think we're playing it smart. the democratic party is behind the candidate that they think is most likely to beat the president, that's biden, actually. heather: what about standing behind the candidate that most represents what you support and the policies that you support? really is it at this point for the democratic party just to beat trump at all costs? >> i would say absolutely not, it's not only about beating trump. both of these candidates stand for important points like health care for all, what cost is the question. strong labor movements, et cetera. >> that's a huge question. heather: so ted, you get the final word here. >> that's a huge question. what the democrat party has been

years, how are you the person best to serve those folks that live there? >> i think that on march 3rd, super tuesday, i believe we had a referendum in our district on if we wanted someone who was beholden to super pacs and washington insiders and voter voted for someone like me who will represent the people of western south carolina. heather: how can you represent all these different types of people. >> the counties i won are the most po populated areas. i'm a mountain boy. i've grown up in western north carolina. i feel like i have a real connection with people there. i feel i can represent them very well in wash tonal. heatherwashington.heather: wha? >> i continue to fight the battle as hard as i can. we're afraid there may be more endorsements for linda that have
