it should be possible to get done. i hope that it is. and from my part, i will do everything i can to work with anybody to make that happen. i hope that everybody feels the same way. it's disappointing to see press releases that come out right after the president gives a speech. there was a lot of good in there. one point i want to bring out, we are ahead of the curve more than most of the other countries were that are having this problem. othe president was the first person tsay right here in america, we should have travel restrictionsrs between china and the united states. thank god we did that. i don't know if people realize how many more cases there would be. he was criticized for pushing too hard. for doing something that was not needed. for being now it's not enough. prejudicial and what he was doing. what is that, too just come together. much or not enough? >> shannon: what jason wrote in the "wall street journal" he said the pandemic is always political.

mr. trump has an opportunity to be the adult in the room and he would surprise a bunch of voters by seizing it. do you think he is rising to the occasion? >> i think he is. he was very serious. it was a president sitting down with the people in america saying i know this is a problem and i know we can deal with this. this is not mass disruption. this is not 9-11. this is a terrible situation that has happened. but at the same time, we know that we deal with the flu every year. we know this is a medical issue. there are things we should do. i will repeat them.icl i know you have heard them too many times you have to say them. -- >> laura: say them again. older people, people that are much older should stay home. just to ride through this. we should not have huge, mass gatherings.

events and all of that? will it help in this case? >> i believe that it will upon. the coronavirus is here. but we can limit the number of cases. when we do that, we limit the number of cases that go to hospitals that take up beds in the hospital. we can achieve that. i think by limiting large group events like basketball games and concerts and even children should be sent home from school and start their spring break early. >> shannon: you have multiple patients who were in italy. they are back and have the coronavirus. you are most at risk in your 70s and 80sav and underlying health conditions. that doesn't tell us the whole story. tell us the caution you want to give. >> sure. there were 13 patients that went on a ski trip to italy. only 2 are my patients but i know about all of them. of the 13, one became ill and 3 days later they were all ill by the time they got back. they were coughing and out of

the 13, 4 were hospitalized. out of the four hospitalize, one in his 40s and one in his two in his 30s, 50s and one in the 60. only one had a pre-existing condition. but three of them right now are in the icu. another number that went to the hospital yesterday but sent home. this is a virus we have not seen before. if anything, the oldest member of that group i can tell you, was 82 and he's done the best of everybody. >> shannon: that's encouraging. i want to read something -- i'm sorry, this is from dr. lipkin at columbia university. he brought up a new idea involving plasma from people who recovered. here is what he says the possibilities are. >> i got a paper from the friend of mind telling me he treated 10 patients with plasma therapy. antibodies from patients that recovered and alla ten of the patients did well.

this is an old method we used before antibiotics. it the work here too. we think this will make a huge difference in mortality. >> shannon: what do you think of that theory? >> i think it's very interesting. because right now we are going by the seat of our pants. they have used hiv drugs. this might work. we are developing treatments and cures in real time. it's a big challenge for the medical community. >> shannon: what is your advice for folks out there? seeing what happened in italy with the explosion of cases. then we hear if you are not in one of those categories you should not be worried. there are millions of flu cases in the u.s. every year give us perspective. and thousands of deaths. >> i would be happy to. you are right. we have to socially distancing and schools should be close so kids don't go back home.

we cannot panic about this and this is what americans do. i heard there was a line around store to buy toilet paper and covid-19 doesn't cause diarrhea. i don't know what they are going to do with all that toilet paper. we have to be smart wash your hands and avoid movies , prudent, and concerts and basketball games. the nba just cancelled its season. we will get through this. we have to make sure this doesn't become political. this is not -- coronavirus will attack whether you are a republican, democrat, rich or poor. the solution has to be something we come up with as americans. we have done this before. we will get through this. don't panic.

protecting your grandparents because tom hanks and his wife tested positive for coronavirus. shutting down the nba. you have mlb players in spring training and other things in the mix. it's a heart of the american community. do you think this is the kind of thing that we will always remember? >> i believe we will. the steps the nba have taken is not only prudent and wise but 100% necessary. they have always shown a leadership role in these social issues. you can go back. look at the women's basketball association. of the things they have done that they have been in the forefront of leading with change. i am not suggesting by postponing the season indefinitely right nowow that's some great social thing. but they are doing the right thing. a step ahead of. it it will be interesting to see what happens with baseball and opening day. an nba game was cancelled tonight.ni

saying the white house did not coordinate with the european officials for this travel ban. it kicks in midnight friday. the only exception is the united kingdom. this will affect tens of thousands of people. dosome had vacation and business plans and plans to visit the family. the ban excludes the united kingdom but american airlines said 15 flights will be impacted daily from europe to the united bstates. the countries affected. it's a long list. 26 of them. ultimately, the president could extend this: it is up to his discretion, pose him, denmark, germany, greek, iceland, lithuanian, the netherlands, norway, poland, spain, sweden and switzerland.

i want to also read some of the exceptions coming from the department of homeland security. these people can come into the united states. in a lawful, permanent resident of the scum in the alien the spouse of united states citizen, any alien who is a parent or legal guardian of the u.s. citizen or lawful permanent resident providing the lawful permanent resident is unmarried and under the age of 21. another big one any alien who is the sibling of a u.s. citizen or lawful permanent resident provided both are unmarried under the age of 21. >> restrictions will be adjusted subject to conditions on the ground. there will be exemptions for under gonehave appropriate screenings. these prohibitions will not only apply to the trade and cargo but various other things as we get approved. >> the homeland security chad wolf put out the following statement:

the list of colleges and universities that continues to grow. this is what we have so far of the schools who say we will go to online classes as long as we can. what do you make of that? we are told that social distancing and keeping people away from each other may not t stop the spread but flatten it in a way that we don't have a huge spike that overwhelms our hospitals and they can't handle it? students really in the population age range to be worried about? it doesn't seem that's the case. we should worry about the elderly. college students are young. see why people might worry they might spread the disease to other people outside of the university. we should be conscious of the costs shutting down universities. i just taught my first internet class yesterday.

it wasn't the same. maybe you can give a lecture. hard to ask student questions. hard for them to see us. it's hard to have a discussion to learn on the internet still. >> shannon: this idea of quarantine. we have a containment zone outside of new york city. this idea of quarantine. it seems like we continued to hear stories of people who are breaking them. they are going to the store and their kids schools. they are doing what they want to do. americans they will have a hard time responding to this stuff. it may be necessary. what can you tell us about how it would work? t t >> yes, this comes from my time in the government after 9-11. we were worried about a bio-terror attack. the people should realize that the federal government only has control over the international borders.as in the borders in between states. they don't have the money and personnel to carry out a quarantine within a state like california or new york. that has to be done by the state governments.

they will see a test of different states and how capable they are and how effective they were in planning for an event like. so you couldn't have national solution like in china or in italy. you will see lots of different states doing different things. they have to take on the front lines of a quarantine and fight this pandemic. >> shannon: does it happen under state law?ua one with they have authority could be there criminal , or penalties for people who don't obey this? if we really get to that point? >> some states could go far and impose criminal sanctions. they could call out the national guard and try to use force to try to keep people from leaving the house. i don't think that's the american way. i don't think people would stand for those controls. we have an individualistic societies. compared you could see lawsuits and to those other countries. resistance. some heavy hand use of force. we are a country where everybody
