realistically what precautions do we need to take? a spokesman for the world health organization joins us with more. thank you for joining us. we appreciate hearing from you, thank you very much. let's talk about the number of cases in the us, 1600 cases, deaths totaling at this point the number is 40, 21 states plus dc declaring a state of emergency but 80% have mild symptoms. how do you explain that in terms of it being declared a worldwide pandemic and everyone freaking out? >> very important that everyone around the world has the correct information. it is a new virus we are still learning about. we know it is transmitted through droplets, people who are sick will transmit disease to other people.

we know the person who will get it will either receive a droplet from the inspected first and on the face or likely will get it by touching some surface, picking up with a hand and touching the face, will get infected. it is true data shows 80% will have a mild symptom, go through the disease without even needing to receive any medical care, 20% is a big number. of 20% able to develop severe illnesses such as pneumonia some of these people will die and that is great concern. the ratio is between 3 percent-4%, but that is a big number, these are our friends and we have to take responsibility for that.

heather: that is what we are trying to do through social events. stopping the spread of the coronavirus, it is worth repeating every single day we need to tell people hand hygiene, avoid touching your face, social distancing, staying at home if you are sick. we keep talking about washing hands, not touching your face with that kind of thing. we said that wearing masks doesn't necessarily help but is it true that coronavirus can remain in the air for 3 hours of live on plastic for days? that is a study that is going on. >> there are several studies being conducted. we don't have a definite answer yet as to how long the virus can survive on a surface. i would guess it depends on temperature and other things but we don't have an answer. we do no one she hands regularly
