children not spared from severe covid-19 cases as previously thought. joining us, we appreciate it. let's take a look at this study of 19 cases in china. one in 20, 94% showed asymptomatic or mild cases but one in 20 showed critical or severe cases. what is your message to parents who are looking at this concern because previously we heard children could not be impacted. >> the message the children cannot be impacted has been misunderstood. the chance of death is much much lower. in china they had no deaths in children but they still got sick, the age groups that are most affected by young babies

and children with certain immune disorders but the message the children are not getting sick has been misconstrued all along. they are not getting as sick. >> what the parents need to do to keep their children safe? >> same things they are doing for themselves. it is much harder with children, much harder to not spread droplets. they are sneezing a lot, wiping their face, hand washing is important, it is very hard to do when children are toddlers running around. there is also a question i'm hearing a lot about whether children should play with each other when everyone is staying at home with their families and children get bored and want to play with other children from across the street. they are spreading it that way as well. it is very hard, and was is important and there are a lot of

other things you can do, action peroxide, vinegar, soap can call the virus, the virus itself isn't that hearty. it is what happens when he gets into your system and causes all the problems. >> the problem is with people's immune systems being compromised previously but in young healthy children that would not be the case. >> there are cases where children are getting very sick, nobody understands why those children are getting sick, there are theories the children have a less developed immune system so in very young children they are not able to mount as big an immune response is older people. the virus itself isn't what is causing doesn't make you sick. it is what it does to your immune system that makes you sick. when the virus gets into the

body some people's immune system mount such a huge response that it creates the inflammation mostly in the lungs and later it can attack the hearts and there is some believe, a lot of theories why children don't get a sick but there is one theory that children don't have a receptor that allows the virus into the body as easily as adults as older adults. and another theory is -- >> i was going to try to move ahead and get to some of these questions. doctors, medical experts, questions that they have concerns about. one of these questions, the first one, my family, this is from jacob mainer on facebook, my family has a planned vacation to florida in two weeks, should we cancel? what do you think? >> i think it will be hard to travel. besides the health risks it will be hard to travel in the

upcoming weeks, mostly logistically, not just getting to the place where you are but being in the airport, being in hotels. if something happens and you do get ill, where do you go? what hospital do you go to? there a lot of logistical concerns which i don't know if travel is going to be allowed in the next few weeks. >> jane leroy on facebook says i am running an air purifier in my home. is that helping against the virus or am i wasting electricity? >> i think it is a great idea. there are certain types of air purifiers that are more effective against viruses and bacteria. if they use heat sterilization, ultraviolet rays within them they can kill the virus. >> do not drive on instagram asks will the virus continue to spread as we go into spring and summer? a lot of people concerned about that when they are the president

talk about stretching into august or july. >> those are hard predictions. viruses are around year round, they just tend to have a lifespan. they show up in a population and then die off. this virus is starting to peak during the spring into summer which is good and bad. during the spring people experience allergies so that an increased transmission if they are sneezing and coughing but as the weather warms up, the ultraviolet radiation can kill the virus. the heat alone or the sun alone can kill the virus off as well. it is harder point to make, usually when the weather warms up people around side and not in cramped spaces but we are socially isolating so that is a

one month ago you may remember we spoke with a passenger on the first coronavirus infected cruise ship, the diamond princess. at the time matthew smith felt coronavirus was easier to steer clear of while staying on board. >> it was best for us to remain here. they discovered they were 14 people with the virus before they got on the plane and they allow them to board. >> now he is finally back home in california where containment measures have reached strict new levels as well. what is it like to leave one isolation just to enter another? matthew smith joins me with more on that. thank you for joining us, we are glad you're finally back home. are you glad? what is the light? you went from one containment to another.

>> it is strange. we had so been looking forward for weeks to coming back to some normalcy here and it is bizarre to think, we fully been back a week and a half and seems like forever and things have changed so fast. sometimes i think i would rather be back in tokyo. >> the customer what happened, you were on the diamond princess cruise ship just to refresh people's memories, 3700 passengers and crew on board. of that 712 confirmed cases, resulting in 7 debts, 325 of those folks recovered you being one of them but as we said we you decided to stay on board when they were taking americans off and you thought that was safer. why? >> they were exposing the people, others who were carrying the virus, putting them in a

situation that seems to us if you are likely to get in anywhere you would get on board that plane flight back from japan to the us shoulder to shoulder on the plane so we preferred to remain in the quarantine and we did that, tested negative for the virus and they left us off the ship and we went and stayed in tokyo for another two weeks until the cdc was satisfied we weren't infected and they took us off the do not board list so we could return to the us. >> what did it take for them to take you off that list so you were finally able to return? >> we were required to take our temperatures twice a day, report those temperatures to the cdc once a day along with a report of whether we were experiencing any symptoms of the virus. >> that you go back home to california which is the third highest in terms of number of cases in the us, 870 or so

reported so far, 16 deaths in the state of california. what is happening there? what can you tell us about what you see? >> we came back a week and a half ago, went briefly back to our home and then had to travel to southern california to las vegas to get our car from where we left it from when we flew out and in the days, just over a week it has changed so rapidly and it varies from county to county, city to city exactly how restrictive they are being but we are in a situation where even without local restrictions being imposed so many businesses are closed and the streets are becoming like ghost town so it is really bizarre and with sports shutting down it has become another world in just a week. jillian: what about where you are now in terms of what you are allowed to do or not allowed to

jillian: we are watching "fox and friends first" and back with a fox news alert. mike pompeo vowing to bring americans home who are stranded abroad amid the coronavirus pandemic as donald trump takes extra steps tightening our borders. in jerusalem, israel rolls out controversial technology to track down covid-19 carriers. >> the us government is currently working to bring home a number of americans who are trapped abroad due to coronavirus travel restrictions.

numbers for people at home in washington state where you are, you have over 1100 plus cases, new york, where i am, 3000, california, one of the top 3 with over 870 cases reported at this point. tell us about the shortages you are experiencing and as you are seeing firsthand means to be done to be able to treat all these people. >> we are seeing shortages of masks, i protection and concerns about shortages on gowns and all of this agreement is essential for medical personnel who need to be at the bedside caring for these patients. we talked about ventilator capacity and our hospital, the breathing machines that are needed when patients start having respiratory failure of their lungs through the course of severe covid-19 illness. right now we are doing okay but

what if we end up with three times as many patients in the hospital in a week or two like projections are saying, and what are the next steps, what is our next backup plan? these are things that keep us up at night but we worry about. >> expected hospital visits for the coronavirus outbreak, #seeing, 10-34 million hospital visits coming from the harvard global health institute. when you talk into patient ratio and bring those numbers up for people as well. how do we compare and what do we need to be doing better? talking about bringing in military ships off the coast in some of these areas that may be in the most dire need. >> the best thing we can do as a country to prevent the need for

the beds is stricter social isolation. we are a week behind in terms of telling people to shelter at home, stay away from other people, don't go to the store if you don't need to. we need to prevent the rise of positive cases in order to not overwhelm the capacity of the hospitals. covid-19 is here, people are infected. it is something that if you are low risk and not elderly is a bad cold, but there are 20% of patients to get admission for severe symptoms. >> we are out of time. should everyone be tested? we keep hearing about test kits, i went in to get tested yesterday and all they did was a

nasal swab to see if i had the flu, checked my temperature, didn't reach the threshold of 103.5 so i don't get a test but i cough and everybody freaks out. what is the deal with whether you are tested or not? >> we focus criteria on temperature, cough, difficulty breathing, that is the threshold for when people are shedding virus and we tried to stick to those criteria for testing and there is limited number of viral swabs. >> best case, stay at home and follow instructions and self isolate if you can for sure. thank you so much, appreciate what you are doing, putting yourself in harm's when your entire staff, thank you. we will be right back. guys, it's that time... and nothin's happenin'.

jillian: the coronavirus threatening young people more than previously thought, donald trump the white house coronavirus task was urging millennials to take their health and safety seriously. ashley joins us with more on the warning. >> a doctor working in the fake of coronavirus says the young people he has seen are suffering major lung damage. a lot of them also have a clean slate as far as medical record goes. what he saw on the lung scans was nothing short of terrifying, this on the heels of a spike in vaping 4 cases in young healthy people between the ages of 30 and 50. the centers for disease control and prevention released a new report showing 40% of patients sick enough to be put in hospital between 20-54 years old, 19 was the youngest age

>> like you said it is scary for them to come out of their house. we saw the issue and work with local food pantries and said how can we help, reaching out and bring them some supplies. >> what type of response have you gotten so far? >> it has been resounding, overwhelming how there's nothing negative coming from this. in this line of work we see that a lot but everybody's onboard. we had a lot of people offering to help out and start replenishing the food pantries to keep this going. uma: heather: a lot of senior citizens don't have facebook or the capacity to do a lot of

social media interaction in this new day and age, seeing smiling faces a will make a difference not to mention supplies you are bringing. >> the fact they don't have social media and facebook, to reach those vulnerable people that don't have access to information most of the people we talk to, a neighbor, friend or family member doesn't know -- the police department is doing that, check it out. we have a drive-up for people to get out of the house and drive and then also a drop off for people with home delivery for those home who can't make it out of the house. jillian: what can anyone else do to help you out in this effort? >> people want to help in situations like this. best thing we can tell them is contact your local food bank to help members of the community all the time.
