new yorkers, people in new jersey and the surrounding area are pretty compliant in understanding how critical it is to maintain social distancing, restrict nonessential travel, really truly in an effort to save lives, prevent the number of hospitalizations, deaths and that sort of thing. jillian: you mentioned some of the symptoms you're seeing in a lot of your patients, fever, shortness of breath, things like that as we look at the numbers in new york, nearing 60,000 cases, new jersey, 13,300 and connecticut close to 2,000, a lot of people do have mild symptoms, doctor, but in that case it doesn't really matter because regardless of if you have mild symptoms or not, you can still transmit it, right? >> you are absolutely 100% right. it may be mild symptoms for you but if it passes to someone that maybe has diabetes or to a senior with underlying heart disease or lung disease or just to a teenager, you don't have to have an underlying medical condition, it can be serious in

those people. they can develop what's called acute respiratory distress syndrome and that's what i'm seeing that's really causing a lot of people to be hospitalized and put on ventilators, the severe damage to their lungs where they can't get air in and out of their lungs. you're absolutely right, we each have to be individually accountable in preventing the spread of the virus and taking precautions because it can spread from person to person, whether you have symptoms or not. so we have to take those precautionary measures, keep your hands washed and cleaned, do not touch your eyes, your nose, your face and practice social distancing because you can truly save lives that way. rob: the big moment yesterday evening, the president in the rose garden saying we're going to do this for another month, essentially locking us down, keeping people from going out unless they absolutely have to. what do you make of that decision? what do you think that looks like a month from today? >> i think it's a very wise decision, excellent plan implemented to prevent further

spread to ensure that our community, citizens are practicing social distancing because all we need to do is temporarily take these measures, rob, to help minimize the spread and truly save lives. rob: do you think at the end of this thing, doctor, we come out of this on april 30th, do we start to normalize again or do we have to go further? >> that's a great question. i think we need to reassess and re-evaluate in 30 days. i hope and pray that we will be able to come out of this. we need to look at certain areas. it may be where certain areas may be able to relax on those guidelines. and certain areas may need to continue. so it depends on the numbers. it depends on the data. we'll reassess in 30 days. i don't think we should put a deadline, guideline -- i'm sorry, deadline date until we reach that point and see what the numbers show and look what the trajectory is. jillian: dr. nesheiwat, you are helping so much. you are helping so many patients. thank you very much for what you're doing. >> be safe.
