1:15 am
you can get the coronavirus yourself, there's less likely that the baby will be affected, there is no data to support that, no virus has been found in amniotic fluid or stuff like that so that is good but you have to be careful because if you do get the coronavirus you're dealing with not only the pregnant patient but the second patient which is the baby. shannon: there are a lot of concerns, this is a mother who says waiting for the other shoe to drop, your spouse or one visitor will be allowed in waiting for the other shoe to drop and here's another concern from an expected mother. we don't know a lot about this virus but it seems to worsen daily. that is a concern for a lot of people. my husband or part or significant other be able to be in the hospital with me? i have to do this alone? >> that is one of the things we began to do way back.
1:16 am
i am part of one of the largest departments in the country in the new york area so when we started looking at the incidents of coronavirus among pregnant women we didn't see a lot three or four weeks ago but now we are seeing a lot. it goes from the mild case of coronavirus to the most severe so that you have all spectrums. in the midst of all that the decisions had to be made on a day-to-day basis and you cite in new york city last week when they came out with a strong restriction on visitors because not only did you have the problem that most of the hospital embedded with coronavirus patients in general and medical staff needs to be protected along with patients that come in with routine care so they don't get sick in the hospital and that is why they made those decisions but everybody realized if you stuck
1:17 am
to one visitor which is the policy and most hospitals in the tri-state area where that visitor gets vetted to make sure they don't have symptoms of coronavirus accompanying the patient, they stay with the patient, don't goes whether floors, are wearing masks, we minimize potential exposure not only to that individual but to the healthcare workers and other patients so it is working out well. the patients are appreciating it. rob: should i consider a home birth with all the coronavirus concerns in hospitals? >> i don't think so. it is not a very logical thing to do. home birth, sometimes people do it, there are protocols to allow that to happen but you always
1:18 am
have to have a backup when you do a home birth. right now the backup is compromised. you have ambulances, emt personnel doing other things so if you have a complication you may find yourself not getting the help you need on time and ending up in a situation where the place might be crowded you're going into. this is not the time to experiment, this is the time to get organized and do the right thing. >> from ashley, you touched on the first part of this but i'm curious your answer to the second, ashley says this a mother is positive, the virus can be passed during birth or through breast milk, what do you think of that for moms who might consider breast-feeding? >> we don't discourage breast-feeding with patients that have the coronavirus. breastmilk is one of the strongest nutrients to provide the newborn with a lot of immunoglobulins and antibodies
1:19 am
that are transmitted from mother to child and that is a positive thing to do. the methodology is different. if the patient is coronavirus positive and very symptomatic after birth we may decide or at least suggest she pumps, and the milk be given separate from the proximity to the mother but if they are positive, we make them wear protective mask and they can breast-feed directly to the baby. it's not about the milk, it is about whether or not you are going to minimize the contagion from the mother to the newborn which is now not protected by being in the womb. >> have those conversations with your doctor, thank you for joining us. >> thank you, good morning, it will be a great day, america.

rob: some of my favorite fruits and vegetables come from florida. i understand the pain of the tourism industry may be why you have surplus, you're not sending so much to hotels. >> absolutely. we've seen major shifts in other supply chains, think the restaurants and hotels in the tourism industry, school closures, nutrition programs and farmers markets all have a trickle-down effect on production agriculture. couple that with an influx of products being imported from foreign countries primarily mexico. now is the time to support your local community, your local farmer. usa products fresh from florida whenever possible. rob: talk about the stimulus
