white supremacy argues to rename bases after, quote: american hero not racist traitors, ainsley. ainsley: in a tweet a dod spokesman firing back saying, quote: on a solemn day for remembering those that are given their lives for our country fighting against tyranny subjugation the "new york times" has a million possible stories of the ultimate sacrifice by americans flights they could tell you about they don't. here to react is retired marine corps bomb technician joey jones. good morning to you, joey. >> good morning, guys. ainsley: good morning, what's your reaction to that? >> it's something that just stirs your blood a little bit. then you have to realize who is doing it. this is the "new york times." you know, this is one of the things where you could be really upset and then you realize this is just another day in the world we live. in you know, there is 365 days in a year. there has been 150 years since the civil war. why is the "new york times" writing this on memorial day this year of all years?
4:39 am
thcialg relevance. right? it's opportunity to get people to talk about him. so right now today there is a black man or woman in the marine corps, probably a first lieutenant become the very first black commandant of the marine corps. and that person has to wake this up morning knowing the goals and dreams ahead of them and that service loves them and wants them to succeed and read something about bases that were named probably before he or she was born for people that were alive 100 years before that. and worry about that. the "new york times" tells them that's what they should be focused on. that's what they should care about this morning rather than defending our country or leading or achieving some of the goals they have in front of them and to me that's offensive. that's as bad as saying that coronavirus was warranted because we had slavery 200 years ago. that's just not how we look at our country. we try every morning to get better, not sit around and poke at each other about how bad we are. and i find it offensive and repulsive. it's just unnecessary and it's
4:40 am
cheap. it's a cheap attempt at relevance in a time when something like coronavirus and memorial day are the headlines. and shame on the "new york times" for even trying it. pete: you are right, joey. american country is the greatest in human history. it doesn't mean we didn't have a history and really bad chapters overcoming. erasing it doesn't change it. it's moving forward. again, it's a great point. joey you have a memorial day message as well a foxnews.com op-ed. here is the title on memorial day i honor fellow marines killed in war. luckily i only lost my legs. joey, talk to our viewers about that perspective because you don't say that flippantly and you remember a lot of guys today. >> yeah. the point there is to draw as big a separation ascii between the small war wounds that i suffered and what someone who laid their life down for this country suffered and their family endured and that sacrifice that we honor on memorial day. we don't honor those of us that served on memorial day. it's not veterans day. it's memorial day.
4:41 am
it's an opportunity to be thankful that people are willing to give their lives for our freedom. what i try to point out to people is this year among any other year we have gone from two months not being able to enjoy our freedoms. that feeling that you had with those freedoms con stricketded this is an opportunity to be thankful of them. these are the men and women who died to give those freedoms the security that we need them to have to have this country. so if we can connect that feeling of not having our freedoms to the idea that someone died so we could have them, then maybe we will honor memorial day a little more, understand it a little more. and then go out and have a beer or a hot dog or hamburger and enjoy the day and celebrate their lives. steve: joey, because of the pandemic, this year is like no other memorial day we have ever had before. i'm sure there are a lot of families who would like to watch the parade, watch the commemoration but there aren't many at this time. >> you don't need a parade or a big pomp and circumstance to
4:42 am

importantly, fatalities continue to decline. you saw the governor of new york as you mentioned their state say that new york is essentially back where they started. back in march, and so we are on the far side of this epidemic in many of the places most impacted and that's given us an opportunity, not just to issue as we did now more than a month ago, the guidelines to open up america again but the cdc and the task force are going to continue to produce useful information about how we can bring back our schools, how we can bring back summer camps, how we can go back to churches and synagogues and mosques and enjoy in a safe and responsible way our freedoms of religion, so we're working very closely with university presidents around the country, over the last several weeks we'll be welcoming them to the white house soon, and we have every confidence that whether it be our universities around the country
5:40 am
or whether it be primary and secondary education that we're in most areas of the country, we're going to be able to get kids back-to-school in a safe and responsible way. pete: mr. vice president thank you very much for joining us this morning. you know there is an ongoing tension between blue state governors, governors keeping states locked down a little bit more and the uncertainty that creates. i've got to ask you because the president just put out a tweet moments ago that pertains to this and we want your reaction. he said i love the great state of north carolina, so much so that i insisted on having the r nc, republican national convention in charlotte at the end of august. unfortunately, democrat governor roy cooper is still in shutdown mood and unable to guarantee that by august we will be allowed full attendance in the arena. in other words we'll be spending millions of dollars building the arena to a very high standard without even knowing the democratic governor would a row the republican party to fully occupy the space. plans are being made by many thousands republicans and others
5:41 am
to head to north carolina in august they must be immediately given an answer by the governor as to whether or not the space will be allowed to be fully occupied, if not we will be reluctantly forced to find with all the jobs and economic development it brings another republican national convention site, this is not something i want to do. thank you, and i love the people of north carolina. so, this is a macro look at something that's happened at the smaller level as well. governors logging down, decisions can't be made, businesses being hit. first if you would, to the rnc and the convention and possibility of changing it and then the question overall. >> well, it's an issue we've been talking about, pete, because these national convection conventions literally take many months to organize and prepare, and you know, there are states around the country, we think of texas, we think of florida, georgia, the last two states i visited last week that have made tremendous progress on reopening their communities and reopening their economies,
5:42 am
and i think the president is absolutely intent on insuring that as we see our nation continue to make steady progress on putting the coronavirus epidemic in the past that come this august, we'll be able to come together in a safe and responsible venue, and re nominate president donald trump for four more years, but what you're hearing the president say today is just a very reasonable request if the governor of north carolina, we all want to be in charlotte, we love north carolina, but having a sense now is absolutely essential because of the immense preparations that are involved and we look forward to working with the governor cooper, getting a swift response and if needs be, if needs be, moving the national convention to a state that is farther along on reopening and can say with confidence we can gather there.
5:43 am
steve: mr. vice president, earlier in today's program, we talked to a couple of guys who own a diner in pennsylvania. york, pennsylvania and they reopened on mothers day weekend, despite the fact that the governor kept the state closed down. they defied the order. they appeared on our program i think about four days ago, and within just a few hours, then the state suspended their license and said you got to close. they are still open this morning we talked to them listen to what they had to say earlier. >> governor wolf threw a little temper tantrum and decided to suspend through emergency powers to suspend our licenses. >> but it's not about the diner it's about the american people. they want their freedom. every customer comes in, they thank us. thank you for being open. >> we provide something that
5:44 am
the community needs right now, to flatten this fear and progress forward. steve: flatten the fear. mr. vice president, can you understand the frustration with certain business owners in certain locations that have not reopened yet? >> well, i really can, steve and it's the reason why even before the 45 days to slow the spread, president trump had us issue guidelines to open up america again, and we made it clear to governor wolf and governors across the country that they could implement that guidance not just on a statewide basis but on a county-by-county basis, and this last week, i actually was able to grab lunch in a nice diner in georgia, another one in florida. i think the american people see that we can safely and responsibly reopen our
5:45 am
restaurants in many places around the country and we're just going to continue to urge governor wolf and other governor s around the country to look for those opportunities, not to use the coerce ever power of the state but to find ways to literally restore the freedoms that we all cherish. this is a freedom-loving country today, we feel on our hearts a particular weight of gratitude to the people who fought and died for that freedom and we're just going to continue in all of our interactions with governors around the country to encourage them, to restore their economy, reopen their country, and we're working in full partnership with governors to make sure they have the testing supplies and resources and ppe necessary to be able to accomplish that in a way that puts the health of their citizens, even right alongside the health of a growing economy. ainsley: uh-huh, mr. vice president we heard the airplane flying that reminds me of the air force and all of the branches that i know your son is serving, pete you served,
5:46 am
my dad served, my grandfathers, steve many in your family served what the is your message on this memorial day, by the way i read your op-ed called this memorial day our freedoms are cherished even more and here is why. it was beautifully written but what's your message for our great country? >> thank you. well, this message on this memorial day even in the midst of these challenging times, is that this freedom-lov ing nation knows that freedom isn't free, and we are grateful every day for all of the men and women who serve in the army, navy, air force, marines and coast guard but today's the day that we remember those who served and fell in battle, and when the president and i and the first lady and karen gather in just a few moments at arlington will lay a wreath, will say a prayer and i just encourage people across this country to remember the families of our fallen in your prayers especially this day
5:47 am
when you see people out waving flags and standing up for freedom across the country during these challenging times, this memorial day, i think we do feel a special weight of gratitude to those who defended that freedom throughout our history, who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, and they are in our hearts today, they are in our prayers and each of them i want them to know this memorial day we are grateful to them, and their loved ones who demonstrated that what the bible says is no greater love, no greater love is a man than he should lay down his life for his friends and today we remember all the men and women throughout our history who have laid down their lives for our freedom. steve: indeed. mr. vice president, thank you very much. we will see you and the president at the tomb of the unknowns very shortly at arlington. thank you very much.
5:48 am
ainsley: thank you so much. steve: all right it is now 12 minutes before the top of the hour. we'll switch gears this memorial day and a lot of people are turning on the grill and i am cooking up some classic cheeseburgers with a twist and i'll show you how you can make a cobbler on the grill and it's delicious but in the meantime let's check in with sandra smith for what she's got cooking at the top of the hour. >> steve: you had me at cobbler on the grill. red, white and blueberry sign me up for that. meanwhile this is the day where we stop, pause to remember our service men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice as you just heard from the vice president there, mike pence and karen pence, they will be laying a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier,, arlington national cemetery and defense secretary mark esper will be joining and a bit later the president and first lady melania trump will be participating in that wreath- laying ceremony around 10 a.m. t
5:49 am
later on the second ceremony the president and first lady will take part in at fort mc henry in baltimore at noon eastern time, we are going to have all of these ceremonies life for you this morning on america's news room joined and me as we begin 10 minutes from now. we'll see see you then. when i was a young kid in third grade, i remember my dad coming up the stairs in my grandpop's house where we were living, sitting at the end of my bed and saying "joey, i'm going to have to leave for a while. go down to wilmington, delaware, with uncle frank. they're good jobs down there, honey. and in a little while, i'll be able to send for you and mom and jimmy and val, and everything's going to be fine." for the rest of our life, my dad never failed to remind us that a job is about a lot more than a paycheck. it's about your dignity. it's about respect. it's about your place in the community. it's about being able to look your child in the eye and say,

ainsley: you might be having a socially distanced barbecue today so the big question is what should you make, pete? pete: well who do we ask? steve doocy has suggestions from his own deck, steve? steve: i do, millions of americans are going to be on the deck. now i've got two ideas for you the first is everybody is going to have cheeseburgers right? so this is actually a recipe that my mom used to have and that is when you mix up your hamburger, you actually add just about a half a packet, if you use about a pound and a half of hamburger with that dry onion soup, and you mix it up as if you would a meat loaf and then inside each of the patties, you go ahead and put a little square of cheese, or you put in some shredded cheese and grease both sides and the key to all of this grilling is that you use
5:54 am
indirect heat so the half of your grill is on and the other half is off, what you do is grill each side for about three minutes at 450 and then flip it, three minutes at 450 and then move it over to the indirect side. so while those are cooking take a look at this. all right i love to cook with a cast iron skillet like my grandma used to so what you do is you melt a couple of pats of butter, and then you put in bis quick, milk and also some sugar. all right? you don't mix it with the butter right there, because that be a mess, and then you go ahead and we're going to make a red white and blue-tiful, and berries perfect this time of the year and then put a little sugar on the top and the hardest thing about the cast iron skillet is remembering that
5:55 am
handle is a million degrees. so you do that for half an hour and through the magic of television once those are done you take them off the grill, afterwards, and this is what the burgers look like, pete how good does that look? pete: oh, my goodness. the cheese is inside! steve: oh, i know it and you can see it's squirting out right there. ainsley: can you break it open i want to see what it looks like. steve: hold on a second. she wants to see what it looks like in the middle. see there's just enough cheese right there for nice little flavor. but this is the beautiful. this is how it comes out. look at how fantastic that is right there. and of course, something like this you want either because it is memorial day, you want either whipped cream or ice cream and it's just like that. because i made it, and i got up
5:56 am
at 3:00 this morning i'm going to go ahead and have a bite. pete: go for it and while you do that steve i'm going to invite myself to your house for memorial day. ainsley: yes you don't live too far. and i like your belt. you have an american flag belt on i notice. steve: that's right. by the way, both those recipes and fox & friends.com. we'll step aside, come right back. if your gums bleed when you brush you may have gingivitis. and the clock could be ticking towards bad breath, receding gums and possibly tooth loss. help turn back the clock on gingivitis with parodontax. leave bleeding gums behind. parodontax. and right now, is a time for action. so, for a second time we're giving members a credit on their auto insurance. because it's the right thing to do. we're also giving payment relief options to eligible members so they can take care of things like groceries before they worry about their insurance
