anarchists. the violence and vandalism is being led by antifa and other radical left-wing groups terrorizing the innocent, destroying jobs, hurting businesses, and burning down buildings. bill: back in minneapolis, police officer derek chauvin is facing murder charges for keeping his knee on floyd's neck. you it's been quiet in minneapolis where the governor called for the full mobilization of the national guard today. live team coverage from across the country tonight of the protests, the response and what could come next. we'll take you to l.a. in a
5:03 pm
moment. but first across the river in brooklyn. brian llenas has found himself on the scene that has turned quickly against the police. reporter: about 0 minutes ago [inaudible] and day tores -- nypd van dash police [inaudible] protesters to stop that from happening. we have a situation now that police in the middle of the intersection. you have an suv, an nypd patrol car that has been lit on fire. behind us over here you have got some of the protesters here. there has been a conversation between the protesters. this one woman dressed in nurse
5:04 pm
garb. she has been trying to calm everybody down. she has been out here trying to calm everybody down. >> i'm trying to calm everybody down. violence is not the key all the time. the nypd mass their job to do and so do we. as black people in this community we have to understand the police have a job to do. we can protest peacefully. all this burning down stuff is not called for. reporter: are you a nurse? >> yes, i am. reporter: she has been trying to calm the situation down. it turned tense very quickly. we have the police in the middle. bottles and other objects have been thrown at them. a fire extinguisher was thrown
5:05 pm
at police. we saw bottles hit the head of an nypd police officer. nothing has been thrown the last few moments. but all day in new york we have seen protests that were peaceful. this one moment, this one intersection, there were people here who did not want to have a peaceful protest. when they started going after the nypd vehicles, this is what happened. then we had pepper spray. mace was used. people were thrown on the ground, now this is where we are at. a very volatile situation. brooklyn was the site of the situation last night.
5:06 pm
the park is the largest in brooklyn. it was 200 protesters. situation as you can tell is just at stand still and there are protesters surrounding them right now. it's much calmer than before. but still tense. at any moment something could be flown. the nypd has been on their toes given the fact the situation at barclay center credit, the commissioner and the mayor have called for an independent investigation of. >> video that showed some aggressive tactics by the police. nypd said there were some people who showed up with bricks, molotov cocktails and guns. and they had to protect themselves. there were some agitators from out of town the nypd said.
5:07 pm
the protests we have seen have been peaceful by and large. but there were some protesters who did not want it to be peaceful. bill: i have got a curfew in la, minneapolis national guard called into columbus, ohio. there is no curfew in new york tonight, is there? reporter: no there will be is no curfew in new york. you know what? they haven't talked about a curfew in new york. maybe there will be. there have been over 00 arrests the last few days. even the ones in manhattan and prospect park. this level of violence was not there. this violence is have much in this intersection by a couple of agitators.
5:08 pm
bill: when you think about covid-19 and what the city has quon through thhas -- has gone t three months, this is an extraordinary scene. protesters marched up 6th avenue. they are on their way to times square. we believe that has been peaceful. tberny kerik is with us. how do you start the process of rolling back the demonstrations that have sprung up in at least 37, maybe as many as 40 american cities tonight? >> i would like to see the political leaders in these cities, in these states, get out there and deescalate some of the violence and some of the nastiness of the protesters. i have no objection to
5:09 pm
protesting. i completely agree that george floyd should not have been killed. you know, i would be out there protesting myself if i lived in minneapolis. but at the end of the day, most these, they are not protests. they are anarchists, they are committing acts of extreme violence. arson, looting, threats against innocent civilians. many of the real instigators are not from the city they are in. this is something i hope that local, state and federal authorities look at. i know the on general has already talked about the fbi and the justice department going after those crossing state lines to do this. there is a bunch of stuff they can do to investigate this and hold the people accountable that's into the acts of violence.
5:10 pm
the peaceful protesters go out there and say what you have to say. go home, do it peacefully. i want to talk one second to the mothers and fathers. if you have kids out involved in these things, get your kids home. these circumstances can get extremely dangerous. get your kids home. they don't belong out there. bill: i want to get out to los angeles. there is an can tough scene east of beverly hills where a shopping mall appears to be under siege. there held people back. what's happening in los angeles? >> i'm in the middle of that scene, bill. i live 200 yards from that shopping mall which is is the grove. it's an icon of retail and tourism. it's been under siege for several hours. the police have done a good job
5:11 pm
in splitting the crowd. it is self thousand strong in total. but they ran movements and kept themselves between various groups of that crowd. i'm on third street, the main thoroughfare that runs directly to and in front of the grove. we are in the middle of what i would say is a relatively calm but always tense standoff at this point. on other points of the grove. if you think of it as a square a couple block radius. there is tv city. cbs, and home to shows like the james corbyn show. a group of protesters tried to get through the gates of that.
5:12 pm
almost out of nowhere riot police officers appeared as if they were uof that area as a st. they are 0o running this open -- they are running this operation efficiently and keeping it under control. developing now, i am talking about several hundred where i am, a couple hundred yards from the grove. marchs from the west behind me are several hundred perhaps -- i can't see how far it goes. this could be up to 1,000, i would say people coming straight towards this group where i am now, joining up with one of the separate groups of marchers joining this one which is obviously going to become a much bigger issue. there is a line of i would say 25, maybe three dozen officers holding back this crowd of several hundred. but it's about to become a crowd
5:13 pm
a couple thousand. they are coming from the direction of beverly hills. they are moving from the west to the east straight along third street. this is clearly going to become more tense as this crowd gets bigger. the l.a. shaffer and lapd have been moving in smart fashion to block off every entrance to the grove and every side street that might lead these protesters to it. but they will have to make some quick moves now because this is rapidly developing into a far larger crowd than it was in the last two minutes i have been talking to you, bill. bill: you just heard a nurse in brooklyn urge calm. what are you hearing from these protesters in la? >> it has been so far a very calm protest in totality.
5:14 pm
bill. i was out here earlier today, this morning i took a morning walk with a cup of coffee through the grove. no sign of protesters. about noon pacific time they started gathering. there was a huge march from the pan pacific park next to the grove down third street. i live 50 yards off third street. it was calm enough, peaceful enough that i thought it was important to bring my children out to walk down to third street and take a look at what was unfolding in front of them. no problems. then the crowd moved towards beverly hills. they were turned back in large part from there. and they have come back to this location that it became violent. i have seen two cars on fire. i think there may have been another one set on fire. so there has been some damage to property. but largely people -- there is a
5:15 pm
lot of talk the last 48 hours of outside agitators. i have not seen any sign of them personally. i'm within perhaps 10, 15 percent of the totality of protesters. i have not heard any just wright calls for violence against police. when i was out here with my kids they would say as we need to take this from downtown l.a. which is where they were last night, we need to make this protest felt in the wealthier, whiter parts of l.a. that's why they were heading to beverly hill whereas they got turned back around. now they are targeting the grove, the famous outdoor shopping mall which is an icon of this city. this is clearly where the police
5:16 pm
are drawing a line and saying you will not get on here. the great fear is if they do, the damage to the big box and retail stores in there, the kind of looting that could take place. everybody hopes wouldn't, but that's why the police have drawn a line around the grove. and we are involved in what is shaping up to be an hours long standoff. bill: be with me throughout the evening, jonathan hund. our colleague said l.a. barber shops and salons were given the go ahead to re-open after being closed for months. now, you go to a city where a curfew was imposed by the mayor in los angeles. leland vittert had a long and violent night on duty at the white house blast night. he will join me -- last night.
5:17 pm

bill were we are deep into the 8:00 hour. the president touched down back at andrews air force base. they are going to most g7 to september, so a bit of news on board the plane. there was a lot of news last night in the dead of night outside the white house. leland, good evening to you. reporter: not only are we ready for another night, the united states secret service and park police are ready in a way they weren't last night. taking down to the ground right now, this is not lafayette park where secret service had to hold
5:22 pm
their ground. this is 8th street, the secret service pushed the perimeter back. a line of secret service and park police have their mounted units out with the horses. earlier today there was destruction of some u.s. secret service cars and the cloud got quite rowdy. we haven't heard the chants and the pushes and shoves you see in the give and takes in the scrum that happened earlier today around the white house. the president just landed on the south lawn of the white house in ma screen one. this is the view out of the north window of the white house. a couple thousand people of on the street, last night they were wright up between lafayette park and pennsylvania avenue. separated by a couple big
5:23 pm
fences. there were a number of protesters trying to break through the security fences. they used the iron rack that the secret service handcuffs together. the riot police came out to see the uniform division percent pull out their riot gear. they were attacked from bricks to fireworks. there were six arrests through the night. in the middle of the night the crowd turned when they found out we worked for fox news. they attacked us and pushed us all the way out into the middle of 16th street, a good two blocks being surround by the mob throwing things at us and hitting us when they found out we were with fox news. that kind of violence has not happened tonight. as you know in these situations, the later things get on a hot summer night, the hotter tempers
5:24 pm
flare, the diehard instigators in the crowd like bryanien is wabryan wastalking about. bill: these are snapshots, brooklyn was one of them. here in new york and los angeles. it's like look through a straw at these events. these are large cities and they are isolated for the moment. minneapolis was a different deal. i want to bring in former boston police chief daniel linsky. i want to play a clip from the governor wf minnesota, sometime walz. he peels back the were taken as to how they are collecting information on the protesters. not just in minneapolis, but
5:25 pm
possibly in other cities. take a listen to this. >> they also were able to provide their intelligence reports of what they are seeing from nsa and others to be able to see who the operators are. just thinking about this, the wars we fought to protect our nation, at war on terrorism. over the last 72 hours, these people brought more destruction and terror to minnesota than anybody in our history. bill: the first part about nsa and intelligence. what can you offer how that's being used in this case? >> when i was in ferg responsible, the department after the brown shooting. we saw there were terrorist groups who were setting you have false twitter accounts and having conversations alienating each other going forward. there is need for legitimate protest. i just got off the phone with
5:26 pm
chief stevens. and his quote was quite right. if you are not disgusted by what you saw in that video, turn in your badge. no one is on a second side here. police agree the with the protesters. buff we've have individuals who are hijack what should be legitimate outrage and they are using it to engage in violence for their own purposes. they are organized groups transporting individuals are prompting individuals to be instigated. there are groups outside the u.s. as a way to destabilize our society. bill: it's a valid point you make? minneapolis the majority of arrests are who live
5:27 pm
in that state. >> wattage day tores do is utilize others to be the front line. they will get young men and women in the front line with the police officers and throw firecrackers, explosive device and projectiles. the police have to move forward against them. they are hijacking the crowd and hijacking the intent to do the right thing which is to change how possibly we could have a system where police officers could do that with individuals and try to take over the community. > bill: i know you will be with me the next couple hours. you saw a picture yet again of brooklyn. that was bryan llenas' location. in the last 60 minutes you saw the tear gas go, you saw the police engaging protesters and
5:28 pm
vice versa. and the cat and mouse game continues. a short time before the sun goes down here in manhattan. these streets of new york have been virtually dead since the 13th of march. it was a friday night when the impact of coronavirus was felt here in new york. and people obeyed the directions on behalf of the political leadership. they stayed home, they stayed off the streets. and tonight they are back and in force. and we are back in a moment as we continue.

now. we have bricks flying over the police officers. the police have charged another two blocks. this is a situation where it's clearly not about george floyd. the speedway gas takes is nearby. projectiles are being thrown biage day fors. making gestures towards police. the police officers find themselves in a situation, they are by a gas station in brooklyn and they are surround. the cops on the right have the reinforcements. but they are trying to clear this. as they clear one side of the block it seems like the skirmish is moving from one block to the next. and things continue to be thrown at the police officers. mace is being used. you can see the things being
5:34 pm
thrown at police officers right now. we have seen full-blown cement bricks to large wood panels being flung at police. we have answer ambulance coming over here. we have seen a couple officers down, and they are just dodging. they are dodging stuff. if we can get a better view. so you can see they put their arms up, but it's not necessarily them, it's the ones in the back. they are throwing things from behind the line. the police officers charge. but this is a situation that's been going on for over an hour. it started with protesters going add a police van and a police car. bill: we'll let you go.

i want and your crew to take care first. don't put yourself in danger out there. we'll keep you on the line throughout the evening. brian llenas in brooklyn. nypd commissioner bernie kerik on the line with me. ways the tactic on behalf of police as they move toward the line. >> earlier lyn linsky talked abt the agitators doing things to provoke the cops. when i watch this.
5:36 pm
i can't help but think of the 70s and 80s when the black liberation army, the black panther party, the weather under round, the fln. these groups like the black lives matter and the antifa, they had the same tactics. that's what we are watching here today. exactly what chief linsky said. bill: i will add, we are a long way from that at the moment. this is the first night new york has seen this. >> we had a major problems last night. there are other things going on around the city right now that's not being covered yet. but there is a bunch of these people out there. and it's a coordinated group.
5:37 pm
it's not just new york city. all these cities are coordinating through one central command. bill: this video was during the commercial break from the brooklyn area where brian llenas' camera position is. you can see how things at the intersection went from bad to worse. the mace exchanged. you don't see physical activity between the two. between the bicycles and the macing. back to l.a. in a second. also atlanta has an issue. we'll get you there live as well. we'll go to all these locations as our coverage continues. more on the protests that continue to rock the nation and what the president might have to say tonight now that he's back at the white house. en allergies and congestion strike, take allegra-d... a non-drowsy antihistamine plus a powerful decongestant.

bill: in the city of chi, a cup sister on -- in the chicag chica dumpster is on fire. further north in minneapolis. mike tobin is watching things unfold. the national guard has been called out in full force tonight. how are things going so far? reporter: as far as the national guard and the police force you really see minimal police force thus far. we are in the calm before what governor walz describes as the inevitable storm. here is the gathering after the third precinct was looted and
5:43 pm
torched. lots of speakers and chanting. you see kids from time to time climbing on the fences outside the fifth precinct. minimal police presence. at one point we saw three officers cop out and elected the lights you are seeing. they will illuminate this area at nightfall. the roads into minneapolis have been shut down. but the catch is here things are coming and going. everything is calm. you don't see the police here. you have got 18 minutes we arrive at this curfew. last night the curfew came and went. it wasn't enforced. there was mayhem and anarchy in the streets as buildings were looted and torched. governor walz is ready to create
5:44 pm
some ugly scenes to restore order. bill: have you seen the national guard anywhere? reporter: i have not seen them anywhere today. the vehicles are around. we saw them last night doing smaller missions like accompanying the fire crews attempting to get to the burned out buildings. other than that the only place we saw the national guard was in the area of the third precinct. bill: you heard the governor earlier today. he said the past 72 hours these people have brought more destruction and terror to minnesota than anybody in our history. is that a message being received where you are? reporter: it seems to be a mess and that's like water off a duck's back. they are angry. the different things they wanted. they wanted criminal charges and they got criminal charges, and
5:45 pm
they remain angry. as the governor indicated. the 95 people arrested were from outside. they were from differing states. and you see them. you see a uniform, if you will that you have become familiar with. the kids have backpacks. they shoot you dirty looks. they want to be left alone. they won't talk with you. these are the outside agitators who make it sport to show up at situations like this. those are the people the governor believes are tightly wound group of outside agitators. bill: nightfall comes soon and so does the curfew as it does for atlanta as well. jonathan serrie joins us live
5:46 pm
from atlanta. reporter: we are just moments away from the 9:00 curfew, temperatures t, 15minutes to beg the mayor imposed, hoping to prevent any more damage than what the city has seen yesterday. all the vandalism. i'll give you an idea of what's unfolding here at the intersection of marietta street and centennial olympic park drive. this is the middle of one of the busiest tourist districts in atlanta. we are next to the cnn building, the for is wheel, down -- the for ithefor is.
5:47 pm
it seemed like the tensions began to flare with protesters hurling water bottles into police. they fired tear gas and made a few arrests. but now it's a quite, peaceful standoff. but we'll see what happens when the curfew approaches. the rapid rail system announced it will be closing rail service early today. the city is being serious about shutting down early and enforcing this 9:00 curfew trying to avoid the mayhem. there is a concern about protests here and out in the suburbs. so there is a strong presence of the national guard in and around atlanta setting up perimeters around some of the major
5:48 pm
shopping districts. governor brian kemp has authorized the use of up to 1,500 national guard troops to assist with this. bill: there is an area of lower manhattan called union square. this is where the protesters made their way. there were hundreds if not thousands in the streets of manhattan earlier today. they moved up 6th avenue to the heart of midtown manhattan then made their way to times square. to go from times square to union square it's a two-mile walk. if you followed the nypd during the day, with it appeared they were trying to flank protesters and trying to contain them within an avenue.
5:49 pm
they made their way down to union square we'll see if it picked up and if they can keep it where it is now, a temperature at a low boil. this takes it to a very different place as we have seen the violence erupt in new york and brooklyn and various american cities. back in a moment with a member of the secret service who tell us how they will keep the white house safe after the events of last night and after the president is there this evening. back in a moment saturday night. that is playing out in ways no one can predict. vitamins... because i trust their quality they were the first to have a vitamin verified by usp... ...an independent organization that sets strict quality and purity standards nature made, the #1 pharmacist recommended vitamin and supplement brand

bill: the protesters have gathered outside the white house. they were knocked back by secret service agents who protected the white house and kept it that way. i don't know how much you can share with our audience based on protocol. but how do you keep the white house safe when you have hundreds of protesters outside?
5:54 pm
>> it might look difficult. but the secret service prepares for this, they train for this. the uniform division officers you see have spent a great deal of time training in crowd control and riot control and the secret service plain clothed agents deal with crowds and how to operate within them. the number one priority of the secret service is the protection of the president of the united states and the first family. up until now they have been playing pretty nice with these thugs. but i can tell you this, if anybody goes over the fence at the white house, all bets are off and everybody will see what's waiting on them. bill: how close did it come to that point? >> probably not last night. but as the demonstrators become more brazen and aimressive, they
5:55 pm
think they can get away with more and more, it's only a matter of time in my view before one of them attempts to breach the fence and get on to the grounds. don't do it. you will regret it. bill: how do we dial this back or is it a question of time? >> it's a question of time largely. look at the rye lots we had in chicago, watts, newark, south central in 1992. eventually they get bored and go home. that's the tactic employed around the country by the mayors. give them room. let them do what they are doing and at some point they will just leave. that's always been the case. obviously this won't go on forever. it's going to end one way or another and hopefully it will end peacefully. bill: we'll be back in a moment
