reporter: curfews in effect or about to be in a dozen u.s. cities as thousands of people protest the death of george floyd. i'm rick leventhal in los angeles. the curfews seem to be having little effect. not keeping people off the streets in minneapolis and other metropolitan areas from new york to l.a. a tense situation in chicago with squad cars damaged and local media reports that protesters were struck with batons near the trump tower on

the city's eastside. one woman charged with attempted murder of four nypd officers for allegedly hurling a molotov cocktail at their police van. bricks and bottles flying. brooklyn and union square. we saw a report a police van that may have driven into a rick: this is a fox news alert and ongoing coverage of protests crowd of protesters. coast to coast. reporter: we are on west 4th i believe we have live coverage street and fifth avenue in new on incidents on the streets of york city. los angeles, i believe. what we are seeing is a couple dozen of protesters. remember one week ago when the police are charging to clear the streets were empty because of lockdowns over coronavirus. street. they are charging to clear the social distancing seems like a street. we have been seeing this distant memory tonight. throughout the night, rick. there have been a couple dozen anarchists and opportunists lighting cities on fire and

side. >> that's true, yes. that's exactly the case. in these cases you will see in the video tonight, the police are kind of inner mingled. they are not making arrests or pushing around. there is a police presence. the closest police on our side of it was two blocks away. looking back on it i was thinking that makes a big difference. the mob is emboldened by the fact they know there is no one there. they will do things they wouldn't have done if the police were half a block away. i'm not blaming the police. they have the situation as controlled as they wanted it to be. we waded in there, tha job, that's what we do. but it wasn't the best situation for us. but all's well that ends well. and it's okay.

rick: i know you are from the oc and you spend a lot of time in los angeles. we want to go to jeff paul in los angeles where there has been some significant trouble throughout the evening. >> we just rolled up here in l.a. there are multiple fires. just down the street we have seen several stores that have been looted. now we have what appears to be a fire on one side of the street. and it looks like there was one on the other side of the street. this follows a protest out in the street. we have seen some protesters throwing rocks, throwing glass bottles and fireworks at officers. many of those police officers responding with bean bags to get the crowd to push back.

we were a few blocks away in the fairfax district near the drove shopping area where there was some looting as well. around 8:00 police started pushing people back, then they started re-opening the streets to clear out the streets. but now we are seeing some of these spot fires popping up throughout businesses, whether they have been broken into or just for some reason, a lot of these fires are under investigation when they go on. the particular cause will take some time to figure out. this is a scene we are seeing play out throughout los angeles. whether it's a fire of a store, a trash can or fireworks being shot off. in other parts of the community, in particular in briefly hills. rick: a curfew is in effect in that's where we are seeing looting going on down rodeo l.a.

there is graffiti all over that. many stores. some of these just mom and pop stores. we drove past an eye glass store, looted, completely gone. various businesses, not even big named stores like nordstrom or the ray band store. anything they want to get into they are. it will be a long flight for firefighters, for police officers. for sheriff's deputies as things over here just starting to get under way in southern california. rick: did any of this start as a peaceful protest over the death of george floyd? are you seeing that or just seeing a lot of the opportunists and anarchists? >> i spoke to a woman earlier

today, they all arrived at a park probably around 1:00, 2:00. it was big and very peaceful. she was saying they didn't know what to do with all that energy. some of the factions of the group of that broke off into the street. sometimes you paint with a wide brush. there are a lot of people who just want to have their voices heard. but when something this big and this worked up over it, you will have factions that decide to express themselves. rick: we are looking at aerials from earlier today. massive crowds in los angeles. it looks like tens of thousands of people. that appears to be a peaceful protest. it doesn't appear to be troublesome in those images. but i guess things spread out from there and people peeled off
