conscience of our country, now we see anarchy, looting, we see police stations and blocks burned, taken over, prescenes burned to the ground. lauren graham, my heart yet again is troubled. i'm tired of saying it is troubled, i want my heart to not be troubled, but it is troubled for the sake of our country. >> laura: what happened to "let not your heart be troubled, what happened to that? we heard that for a year, the going gets tough, and -- toughen up, buttercup. we've got it. we got it, mixed martial arts men, we can handle it, we got it. >> sean: keep it coming. >> laura: i have to tease you. i thought a handoff if it's all -- >> sean: no, no, no, -- have fun at my expense. i deal with this perfectly, but i hate to see our country go through all this madness, nobody is protecting the people or the

symbolism. they burn stuff down. we are building it up. we are a free people, and we are going to stay that way. and that's the "angle." joining me now is dr. shelby steele, hoover institution senior fellow, and author of "shame." he is also wrapping up a documentary called "what killed michael brown?" dr. steele, how do we answer those who insist that because of racial and economic injustice, america is inherently wicked? >> well, i think that's the -- that's their presumption, and it goes back, i think, to the '60s. we had a huge culture war at that time. america did certainly one of the bravest things any nation has ever done, admitted to having oppressed blacks and other minorities for centuries.
7:11 pm
we are still working that out. i think what we see today on the left, are people exploiting that creature's gesture the part of america by rubbing in our phase that we have -- we have this dark background, this is history, that we are denying, and that's not facing into -- and they are. so it's a struggle for moral authority. they are saying, precisely because they are against america, they have the moral authority to come in and take america over. and on the mainstream of america, people on the right and so forth, represent that old america that admitted its wrongdoing and is trying to march forward and has, in fact, changed radically, but we don't have the glamorous moral authority that the left does.
7:12 pm
and what we seen the last few weeks, they worked it very well. they breathed out in straight shooting americans, in good, decent americans. who really want to move forward, race relations and other things. but this new left says, you know, you are aligning yourself with the devil, with evil, you are not a decent person -- >> laura: shall be, shall be -- >> has the power to stigmatize. >> laura: i'm calling you shelby because i've known you so many years the radio -- >> please do. >> laura: look, it's come i think i'm attempting come on the part of corporate america -- a lot of good meaning people, to try to, i'll write a check, i'll put up a slogan, i will do a hashtag, and i think -- maybe they think it buys them protection, but what do you think it ultimately does?
7:13 pm
>> well, here's what it does. they become enablers of precisely the behavior that they don't like. they enable the left, they enable black lives matter. how much money is black lives matter taken in and the last few weeks? they'll never let us know, but it's a lot. and so, they are -- i mean, it is -- the more upset the mainstream gets, the happier they are, the better -- americans, because we are a decent people, we go along, and all over america today, amazingly, every little town, people are carrying signs, "i love black lives matter," with no sense of what that really means. but signaling, trying to signal that we are not racist. we are not the america of old. >> laura: dr. steele, president trump -- >> holds that over them.

7:19 pm
at that point, half of the crowd wanted to make sure nothing happened to the officers, but the other half of the crowd was asking, well, what are they doing here? this is our zone, this is our territory, goes against everything we have been doing the past few days, and there were arguments breaking on whether or not they should be letting them in. now, as i posted on social media, there is been a lot of arguments within their little town hall that they've set up on, again, what the next steps are, and right now, there is no clear, decisive leadership inside, so things are really kind of degrading inside the zone. >> laura: this is how cnn's oliver darcy explained what is going on in seattle from 3,000 miles away. he said "if you been getting your news from right-wing media, you probably think our militant antifa activists have seized a section of seattle, but the mayor's office tells me city officials have not interacted with armed antifa militants at this site." this video is what you shot from inside this zone last night.
7:20 pm
[siren] weep >> did he do it, who knows? leap. >> laura: doesn't seem like it was all peace and love there. >> president trump called it cnn fake news, there is a reason the insult sticks. a young man that was surrounded by the crowd, he was accused of stealing, from what i could gather, he was accused of stealing a phone from another protester, so they said he was a thief, and he was trying to get away, they're asking, well, if you're innocent why are you running away from us? the man was clearly terrified, and at one point, there was a guy with a baseball bat, and he shoved the baseball bat in the guy's face and said i'm going to beat you up. fortunately for that young man, he was able to get away from the crowd, and it was then discovered that he didn't steal the phone, the phone was discovered at another spot.

♪ >> laura: last night, we brought you the story of ucla professor gordon klein, who was suspended for the heinous crime of not letting black students postpone final exams in the wake of george floyd's death. well, tonight, a different effort has reared its ugly head, and other ivy league institution. professor william jacobson has taught at cornell law school for over a dozen years, but that hasn't inoculated him from the mob. on his blog, legal insurrection, jacobson accurately fact-checked a couple of the foundational tenets of the black lives matter movement. well, now outraged students and

even colleagues he's been friendly with for years, some of them are calling for his head. professor jacobson joined me now to respond. professor, you are a conservative, so you are used to being in the minority on college campuses. but what about this level of vitriol? >> right, i've never seen this. i mean, this is so far beyond political correctness. this is almost a totalitarian type of mentality, that everything you say and everything you do is watched, and if you don't toe the party line completely, you are ostracized and you are attacked. that is exactly what happened here. i simply told a couple of truths about the foundations of the black lives matter movement. it was founded based upon the claim that michael brown was shot by police while he had his hands up and he was saying "don't shoot," and every day, now, during the protest, people are walking around saying "hands up, don't shoot," but that is a complete fabrication. is not a fabrication because i

say it is a fabrication, becausn because after an exhaustive investigation by the obama, eric holder justice department, they found that that never actually happened. that was concocted by the founders of the black lives matter's move portray police as brutal killers of black people, and it has been the ethos that has carried on forever. and that's why we see calls to defund and deconstruct the police, but it's based on a fabricated tail that gave rise to this movement. >> laura: so it was your nerve that you had to state a truth that got you in trouble, and -- just so people understand this, professor, the cornell law school dean put out a statement in support of your academic freedom, but then he also went on, of course, to say this. "recent blog post of professor jacobson casting broad and categorical aspersions on the

goals of those protesting justice for black americans do not reflect the values of cornell law school." i found his recent post to be both offensive and poorly reasoned. professor, you can keep your job, but you're going to be verbally flogged in public, and i think the effort is to make sure students shy away from taking your class, that is what i think is going on here. >> well, that statement by the dean is falsely characterized what i wrote. i did not cast aspersions on people peacefully protesting, i cast aspersions on the violence and the looting and the tearing down of society. that's what i was talking about. i think anybody reading my post would fairly come to that conclusion. but there's a bigger point here. we have, on our campus, faculty who say the craziest, most offensive things from a left-wing perspective. they never get called out. and they never have their dean's issue statements. it's only the one conservative

in the law school, me, who gets singled out, and it's almost like the attempted public, it's what happened during the cultural revolution in china, that if there is a professor who has a wrong thing, you hold him out, ostracize him, and you criticize him to the community, that is a statement the dean should have said he had the academic freedom to write what he wants, period. because that's what they do for everybody else. >> laura: professor, i have to ask you, because i went to dartmouth college during the '80s, just the beginning of the political correctness movement that we were exposing our college students to, but is there any liberals in the traditional sense still on campus? who say, look, i don't agree with you, bill, but you have a right to speak out. it's ridiculous what is happening to the country. are there any of those left, or are they all gone? >> well, a lot of them are left, but they always speak very

quietly. they talk in hushed tones and behind closed doors. it's a very repressive atmosphere on all campuses. a typical example -- you know, it used to be if you kept your head down and minding your own business, you could kind of escape the crowd. that's not true anymore. i mean, the cornell student group that's been coming after me has, on their facebook page, "silence is violence." >> laura: being silent is a crime. >> crazy. >> laura: we're going to continue to document this, we are going to have you back. maybe it is time for the federal government to take away some of the benefits these schools get if they are going to do nonsense like this. up next, we have an urgent warning for anyone who cares about preserving our history. bottom line is,
