1:14 am
we appreciate it. look at everything going on in the country it is a tough time to be in law enforcement. where do you think the breaking point was with trust between police and community and how we got here. >> reporter: the file and seeing you saw in television in minneapolis with a breaking point, it broke the camel's back and we need to make sure we build that trust back up. todd: we will monitor this development and keep you posted throughout the course of the morning but let's go to a situation that is not just minneapolis specific but something we are seeing nationwide but we lead off with a minneapolis situation. 7 police officers quit citing lack of support from city leaders in light of what is going on but not just minneapolis.
1:15 am
we had atlanta, minneapolis and even in florida ten florida swat officers quitting over the political climate there and washington post you will see pop up in a second. 57 buffalo new york officers re-signing over the suspension two people shoved to the 75 you make individual donald trump was speaking about a lot last week. i feel as though those who want to get rid of police officers are really having a moment right now because police officers are saying i don't need to take this. i'm going to get out. with the response to what we are seeing nationwide change there's a lot of uncertainty and right now police are not highly enjoyed or liked right now so we have to build the trust back up once again but it is a situation where families are saying i don't want you to be in that is
1:16 am
this, i want you to get out and maybe they are close to retirement and may retire early but it is a situation where they are not sure what the city council is going to do. are they going to disband? are we going to lose officers? do i need to be looking for another job? shannon: you are retired. when you get into the force right now? it is one of those jobs where as you well know you go to work in the morning or the afternoon and you don't know what you are going to face that day. would you do it right now? >> if i was close to retirement i would do that come my family would appreciate that. they have continually set i'm glad you're not still working so that is nice to hear but i would also like to be a part of making it better and that might help recruit officers, to make sure maybe they want to be part of
1:17 am
the new system envisioned by somebody and maybe working together with the community and the police to make sure it works properly. >> minneapolis police department with a statement with regard to offices leaving the force the right people seek to leave wanted from you read of reasons, the nypd is now exception due to employment separations we've not noted any indicators that would impact public safety but going forward this issue of recruitment could impact public safety. we can't recruit any offices going forward. how do we protect the public? >> it is difficult to recruit. it has been difficult to recruit in the last few years. women and people of color are just not joining the force anymore like they used to and they don't see -- there are other professions that pay better that they could go into where they are not going to get hurt or conceivably not come home at night because they have been killed.

1:23 am
field but i can't tell you i'm 100% certain that's going to happen. >> so will players take the field this year and if not will the implications be even bigger than baseball? jason page joins us live to weigh in. we usually wait for this question until the end, like one big rapid but i will ask it here, and we have baseball this summer? >> know. i thought 6 or 7 weeks ago we were in a position we wouldn't have baseball so i'm not surprised. i don't think the owners ever wanted it. i don't think the owners ever wanted to play games without fans because of the staggering amounts of money they were going to lose, they've dragged this thing out, they started a position that they knew wasn't tenable in terms of what they were offering players in return for coming back to the field and now they've run out the clock to the point were the two sides
1:24 am
gone back and forth and now we're in a situation where rob medved might be able to implement a 50 game season and force players back to the field but in that situation players can just say not worthless to come back for 50 game season at risk our health. there is still so much that has to get put in place by players and owners and i don't think there's enough time to do it at this point. >> that was my question. is this a delay tactic to implement a schedule around 50 games, the talks between the mlb and emma bph intent, that's what you heard in that clip as a couple second ago that manfred guaranteed the season june 12th, the owners make another officer june 15th, they reject the offer on the fifteenth and the owners call, less confident in the 2020 season, this has gone back and forth for a while. what is the long-term effect if
1:25 am
there's no baseball this summer? think back when coronavirus first started and there was nothing going on. everyone was in lockdown and people said we want some baseball, some live sports to watch, people were hanging their hats on this, what is this going to do long-term? >> it is a disaster because of the sports will come back and baseball is already in a fight for survival when it comes to being something relevant to the younger fans. it is an older demographic that has had a hard time drawing in younger fans and minority fans. this isn't going to help in the long-term implications after next season, after the 2021 season, owners and players have to come to the bargaining table again to try to get a new collective-bargaining agreement done and all the animosity between the two sides, how could you possibly get a deal done if you wipe out the entire 2020 season. >> that the issue festering under the surface. there was a call yesterday, some
1:26 am
of the topics, generating a schedule, health and safety protocols, 21 days of spring training, getting pictures on his back in shape, the weather is nice, you can do that in boston, new york, areas him here but 0 bonuses without fans. there was talk throughout march and april that the return of baseball was about more than baseball but about the american psyche, jillian alluded to this earlier but is this concept gone? is there no feeling that this is good for the nation if we come back with america's pastime and raise up america? >> i think the whole notion of america's pastime is a pastime notion. i don't think there is nearly the fever for baseball but you imagine. i've seen poll after poll where people say baseball comes back to you care? know. most people don't care.
1:27 am
and it is my favorite sport as you well know, the yankees are my favorite team but if there is no baseball this year life is going to go on. it will come back next year and fans will gradually come back and there's going to be a bunch of financial implications that we don't have time to get into but budgetary concerns you will see more teams laying people out, players getting released, it will create a bunch of different issues for baseball. shannon: for all fans out there who want to sit down and enjoy some baseball, thank you for joining us. todd: we will be right back.

1:42 am
pro-america in the best of times was another time when america needs its citizens to stand behind her and it is okay to not be okay with what has happened in the past several months. america has been rocks, the covid-19 pandemic, the economy has in rocks, small businesses lost their business, americans are unemployed. it is okay not to be okay with that. you see everything going on with racial tensions going on in the country, george floyd, most recently the shooting of rayshard brooks in atlanta. it is okay not to be okay with what happened to george floyd, it is okay not to be okay with violent riots taking place in our communities and our streets. what is not okay is to turn your back on america and i think personally this is a generational issue we have in america. it is our responsibility as the current adult in the current generation to teach future generations that america is more
1:43 am
than a good times bad times scenario. it is the social commitment we make to each other when we accept the many blessing we having this country that we are going to stand by our flag, stand by the pride of being american and just because the late may seem dim right this second doesn't mean america will not come out on top like it does every single time. jillian: feels like a moment in time in our country just feel different to me, people are taking time to listen to one another, to their stories, their backgrounds, their struggles and it feels like there could be change on the horizon. what does this mean to you? >> i agree, we have an opportunity to move forward together in a positive way. there is a small group of people that are trying to mess that up and trying to destroy that for
1:44 am
their own reasons. i think the majority of america, 99% of america wants all-americans to be equal, we want everyone to have the same rights, freedoms, opportunities as everyone else. i think we have an opportunity in this country to move forward to a better state. i think what we need to do is band together and stop fighting with each other. sometimes it is not about winning the argument. it is about moving forward in the best possible way together. >> here's to hoping the graph used by a second ago takes upward when it comes to pride in america, thank you for joining us, we appreciate it and your service. todd: that is a good upward tick we are hoping for, this not as good, a spike of covid-19 cases leading to consent of the second lockdown in several states with some states dealing their reopen phases until they can stop the spread.
1:45 am
more with healthy tennessee, doctor manny, can you hear us? >> good morning from tennessee, sorry for the difficulty. todd: let's pop up the state's, 22 of them, have the country with an upward trend. i'm not going to read them bit you know the data. what do these numbers tell you? >> i would tell you as we reopen america we knew it was not going to be a straight path and we knew we would have some increase in cases. part of that is we have more increased testing, more capability but some is also that more patients are getting the coronavirus but i would say we put out the wildfire meaning the spread of covid-19 and there are going to be some brushfires, small outbreaks but we can't let
1:46 am
the left-wing media make us panic, we have to get america "we've got to keep america moving forward. todd: you do not believe we should shutdown again? >> absolutely not. i have for the longest time believed we needed a vertical containment strategy was what we did was closed america down so we had horizontal containment. the cdc released a finding that folks who are older, co-morbid conditions were 12 times more likely to pass away from coronavirus than anybody else of the point is we have to protect those people, vertical containment strategy and keep america moving forward, we cannot economically sustain another shutdown. in tennessee our small businesses are the engine of growth and we can't shutdown. we have to keep moving forward in here in tennessee we have some rises in cases. our capability in the hospital is excellent, icus have a lot of room. i believe some cases will continue to rise but with testing that will happen but we expected this.
1:47 am
todd: you are the medical doctor, larry kudlow is the money doctor and he agrees with what you are saying. >> there's bumps, there are going to be bumps in the bumps are not necessarily related to the reopening. this is nowhere near some kind of second wave, nowhere near it. todd: that is what larry kudlow is saying. how should the average american deal with this virus going forward in the next couple weeks and couple months? >> take basic precautions of hand hygiene, if you're sick, elderly, take care of yourself but what we can't do is have a left-wing lockdown where for example in nashville we have a democratic mayor who tried to shut down a bar because of
1:48 am
social distancing when right outside thousands of people protesting that he's encouraging, that makes no sense. we need to be very thoughtful in this situation and basic social distancing, take care of yourself if you are sick and at risk, that's how you move forward, very simple. todd: have a great day, hopefully we all get through this. >> thank you, god bless. jillian: a reporter gets chopped by a protester in seattle. >> it is not a street festival. it is not a street festival. it is not a street festival. do not say that. jillian: awkward on air moment that has a lot of people talking. todd: we used to love live shot. colin kaepernick has been out of the nfl for years but roger

>> you see a street festival type atmosphere. >> it is not a street festival. it is not a street festival. to not say that. shame on you saying that, learn right now. todd: are heated on air moment, msnbc reporter gets chopped by a seattle protester after downplaying a movement. jillian: serious xm 115 with how social media is reacting. >> reporter: my heart goes out to that reporter, that is a
1:53 am
tough moment and he's not the only one to describe this occupied area in a lighthearted way. this seattle mayor said it had a block party atmosphere and could lead to the summer of love. a lot of media reports focused on the activities taking like a group painting and watching movies outside and things like that but it is clear these protesters wants to be taken seriously. for many of them it is not just fun and games so this awkward report going viral, quick reaction, this twitter user said that young man was not having it. a comments saying words matter, don't die with the protest with your words. these protesters have serious demands but like i said, a lot of them want to be taken
1:54 am
seriously. todd: they can't get their name right much less knowing what they are, seems like it is going very well so far but that switch gears to something different. no matter where you stand on the confederate monument issue we can all agree dolly parton is the greatest person ever. carley: there is a petition going viral online calling for tennessee to remove statues of confederate generals and replace them with, you see her on your screen, statues of dolly parton. the petitioner says history should not be forgotten but we need not glamorize those who do not deserve our praise, let us honor a true tennessee hero, dolly parton. this petition has received 12,000 signatures. raven says who could be mad at this? she's a national treasure. lauren says this is the most tennessee thing. there is some support for this out there. >> working 9 to 5 to get her a
1:55 am
