saved his life. >> i'm confident that i can win on appeal but i have to win long enough to get to the appeal and at 67 years old, with a history of respiratory problems and other underlying health issues, the danger was very real. jedediah: stone was convicted of witness tampering and lying to congress. he was set to report to prison on tuesday. welcome, everyone, to the 6:00 a.m. hour of "fox & friends." we're glad you are joining us today on this pretty big news day. lots unfolding. very interesting story with respect to daca, what that merit based immigration system will look like and how all of this will be received by a public that is now in the heat of a 2020 elections, pete. pete: absolutely. we will have chad wolf on the acting dhs secretary next hour to break down what that might be there was a lot of ambiguity in there and what the president said and alarm bells go off when you start talking about pathways to citizenship. we will get into that later in the program. the big news, griff, in the

swamp, is roger stone is a free man. not a pardon, a commutation of the sentence he was to serve and on both sides of the aisle a lot of reaction. griff: that's right. the president said he didn't pardon him because he believe stone was wrongfully prosecuted and therefore he wants it commuted to save him from prison but allow the process to play out. my favorite part pete and jed, on a friday afternoon and evening, democrats here in washington went nuts, blasting the president for commuting stone's sentence. here is a little flavor of it. senator elizabeth warren calling it a mockery of our democracy. offensive to the rule of law and principles of justice. cory booker says we can and must do better, jed. jedediah: yeah, this is always a contentious issue. the president has a constitutional authority to do this. we know it. other presidents, trump is not the first person to do this, obviously. but it always becomes controversial because you look at the things that the people have done or said and also what

comes into question is people distaste for this ability that the president has to do this all together. many people feel that people that are friends with the president. we know the president has a longstanding relationship with roger stone. longstanding friendship. always seems like people who are friends or tight relationship with friends whoever may be get these commutations. people don't like the look at that and people don't understand that with that being said, he is not the first one to do it. not going to end any time soon. sometimes people get commuted you wish had served their sentence and that's just the way of the political land right now. pete: roger stone were targeted by bob mueller. the ones were the ones behind surveillance. roger stone has fought for his innocence from the beginning. he wrote roger stone's rules. he also says attack, attack, attack, never defend. admit nothing, deny everything, launch a counter attack. he has been saying he is innocent. ultimately see that criticism from democrats, guys, reminds me

of another roger stone quote i revel in your hatred. if i wasn't effective you wouldn't hate me. of course, the left despises roger stone. the president credits him for a lot of support over many, many years. roger stone reacted. and didn't just point to himself when -- he talked about another individual targeted by mueller. general michael flynn. here is roger stone. >> but between now and the time it ends, i'm going to do everything i possibly can to see that there is justice for general michael flynn. about michael flynn. speaking of film. a newly released yesterday memo for the 2017 -- from 2017 excuse me, confirms the fbi did not believe that michael flynn intentionally lied about contacts with russia. lucas tomlinson joins us from the pentagon as flynn's lawyer claims this was suppressed by people inside the doj. lucas, good morning. >> good morning, guys. >> that's right. many are asking this morning what took so long for this memo to be released. appearing to prove general flynn's innocence. the justice flynn memo says quote general flynn denied having about sanctions. fbi advised based on this interview they did not believe general flynn was acting as an agent of russia. now fired fbi agent peter strzok. back in ape, the vice president says he is more inclined to believe flynn and called him an a patriotic american victim of abuse by the justice department. general flynn said in a statement quote these documents

provide even more evidence to general flynn's consent and government's motion to dismiss. in short there was no crime for many reasons. these documents were known to exist at the highest levels of the justice department and by special counsel. yet they were hidden from the defense for three years. given all these revelations, we will have to see how president trump reacts this morning. guys. griff: all right, lucas, thank you very much. interesting, guys, following on lucas' great report there the "wall street journal" has an op-ed today saying pardon flynn. it's time to pardon him. that's very interesting. the attorney we just heard from, flynn's attorney there, sidney powell, has done quite a remarkable job of walking this through the process now what the "wall street journal" is arguing is to rehear this en banc, have the entire u.s. court of appeals for the district of columbia is a mockery of the process itself. we will see where it goes. it's certainly going to probably get the president's attention

this weekend. jedediah: yeah, it will for sure. the fact that the fbi didn't think that flynn intentionally lied. that was the crux of this whole thing. so, it remains to be seen what's going to happen here. hogan gidley trump campaign national press secretary weighed in to all of this. take a listen to what he had to say. >> some good people were caught up in this russian hoax, this was perpetrated by zealous democrats partisan hacks to take down the president. wiretapped by the previous administration. we wouldn't know if donald trump hadn't been elected that comey and clapper and brennan were all lying in front of congress. and in other ways. we wouldn't know the names, lisa page and peter strzok the two hofers that conspired to take down a president with an insurance policy. we wouldn't know any of that had donald trump not been elected. pete: that's what he was counting on, guys, he wouldn't

get elected so we would never find out. we use the word bombshell way too often in our line of work. a memo written by the fbi that says they knew he wasn't an agent of russia. they knew he wasn't lying. he believed what he was say something true. they recognize the discrepancy but they knew he was not acting on behalf of russia. yet they didn't allow this document to be seen by the defense. internal memo from the fbi from january of 2017. man, the momentum is certainly on the good general's side and would will see where this goes. now, there was supposed to be, -- i previewed yesterday on "fox & friends" we would be covering a rally for the president in new hampshire. there was a storm on the east coast so they had to cancel that. the president was in south come where he spoke in florida where he is spoke about happening drug interdiction down there and he had a chance to talk about joe biden and how he really is a puppet for the radical left. >> joe biden and the radical

left trying to impose the same system socialism plus in america. biden is a puppet of bernie sanders, the aoc, the militant left, nobody will be safe in a biden america. but biden doesn't know what a biden america is if you asked him to define it. he will doesn't know what it is but other people do. he would have radical people running that party of socialism and worse. pete: he also accused the former vice president biden of plagiarism not a new charge against him considering why he had to drop out in a previous presidential run copying his economic plan. on the surface that's true trying to talk about america first and american workers. if you dig into economic plan, reparations, open borders, there is socialism plus. so yes, on the surface there is copiying. in reality, joe biden is captured by the deepest darkest corners of the left. griff: joe biden is leading in

all of the national polls and the presidential trying to define biden to put daylight between him and the former vice president. but, i think there is an interesting voice coming out that we want to show you and that is democrat congresswoman from michigan, elissa slotkin was talking about what a polster told her about these polls that have biden up. she says, quote: the trump voter is not a voter in every single election. that they come out for trump so they are hard to count. on a survey if someone sells i'm not sure i'm going to vote you don't usually continue the conversation. some of them didn't have any desire to be on those poll calls. they didn't have the 20 minutes to talk to somebody. they didn't want to do it. so they are fundamentally under counted. i believe that same thing is happening right now it's interesting to say 2020 has been the year of unpredictable developments. she is pointing to what this polster told her, jed, saying, look, these polls do not count

where the trump voters are we have heard a lot about a silent majority out there. jedediah: yeah, i'm sure there is. two points, one is that i think joe biden more than anything, is just completely lost. he is trying to be what he thinks people want or need him to be. and he hasn't quite figured out what that is. that's why he always looks like he is stumbling. is he trying to path everyone. none of it is working. a lot of people on the left are uninspired by him. he doesn't know how to fix it. second thing is i do think there is a silent majority for sure but a lot of people are not enthused with joe biden who will vote against president trump. too early for me to look at polling and say that's going to be divisive. but i think a lot of factors are in play particularly the economy and what happens with respect to covid and that will play a big role which direction people go. pete: no doubt under count of trump supporters. jedediah: we will see though.

>> good morning, griff. griff: interesting comments from the georgia senator there talking about the difference between the black lives matter movement and the actual organization itself founded six years ago. what do you think? >> look, black lives matter is a misdirection on something that has been a movement in this country without a hash tag for generations, griff. what have we done in this country? we overturned slavery, we overturned segregation. we fought forward freedom for all regardless of color of skin, especially blacks who were slaves in this country more so than any other group and surprised americans that there were other groups that were slaves in this country in small part. what we have now is a misdirection and a hash tag and movement that doesn't stand with american principles of evolving into a better community of doing the hard work. you have groups like the black lives matter foundation which is the new york attorney general says cannot accept any funds in new york because they haven't done the paperwork. you have the website run by the

three founders, and where does the money go from that? well, they use act blue. clearly operating as an arm of the democratic party. then you have a movement of peaceful protesters, people with real concerns in america. you and i saw the difference in ferguson, and in other events that we have covered together. and what that has become is more a group of cannon fodder for the leftist, the democrats, the political players, the anarchists, and, unfortunately, this has gone from organization that you don't know who is really at the core of it and where it goes and now we start to see that to a group that has become well, really, cannon fodder for leftist movement in this country. griff: hey, let me ask you about something else, david. that is the great charles barkley speaking out saying professional sports is becoming awoke circus. this is what he says. listen. >> i think what is happening now we turn it into a circus.

texas due to coflt. your response to the situation down there in texas. >> well, i think we do have a lot more positive cases and that is because we are aggressively testing down here. you would expect that when you are testing you will get more positive cases. there is even a study out by the cdc that showed there are probably 10 people out there that are positive for every one person that is tested. there are a lot of people out there that have this. now, the one thing that i have noticed up until recently, the report something that the hospitalizations and the deaths are trending down despite the fact that the test numbers are trending up. there are some reports now that some of the deaths are trending up a little bit that's in large part i think due to testing as well. people in the hospital are being tested aggressively right now on the icus and wards. you are being tested. even if it's an incidental finding you test positive coronavirus. that goes down as diagnosis for hospitalization. if you were to die in the hops hospital for something that will be part of your diagnosis when

jedediah: president trump threatening backlash to cut funding if schools don't resume inperson funding in the fall. griff: american academy of pediatrics also called for schools to reopen released a statement saying quote: pete: joining to us react is rachel campos-duffy. thank you so much for being here. rachel: good morning. pete: you hear outside groups unions piling on with statements saying listen to the experts. all points to maybe we open, maybe we don't, our schools. what do you make of it? >> actually, the president is suggesting that we do exactly what the american academy of pediatrics says to do until this whole thing got super political.

the american academy of pee pediatrics said we need to open and that not opening was more detrimental to children than the risk of covid. and as we learn more about covid, we know that is absolutely true that children are not super spreaders. that they are not likely to die from it. and that the risk of them not going to school is greater. hurts the most vulnerable the most. those that have learning disabilities, special needs, the poor. children who are living in abusive homes. the pediatric association knows this which is why they originally recommended that we move towards reopening the school unless some crazy outbreak happenings, which by the way, we can all manage if something happened, we can pull back just like we did before. but we should be planning to open because that's the right thing to do. the only reason we are not planning on doing that in assume of these liberal cities is politics. and the activists inside the teacher's unions who are pushing for that.

jedediah: rachel, one challenges that i'm seeing is a lot of protocols kids wearing masks, social distancing for children that's not practically applicable in a classroom. it's just not going to happen. in terms of reopening, you are a mom, you are my super mom that i always go to for advice, what would you look at as a parent to say you know what i feel comfortable my kids going to school. should they open like normal? >> hygiene that's happening. i know schools are petri dishes of germs. i'm glad that they are cleaning classrooms more. these are things they should have been doing anyway. really this is more like the flu, jedediah, it's not that much more different for children. of course, that's different if you have co-morbidities, if you are old and if you are sick. that's different. for kids, the danger is not that great. and as we know there is also vaccines that are going to be coming out probably around

december or january as well. so, i think that the alarm that we are seeing, to me, is very, very political. because, as we know, if kids can't go to school, parents can't go to work. if parents can't go to work. our economy can't get back on track, which as you know, is really key to donald trump winning in this next election. griff: rachel, let me take to you a different story the controversy brewing around goya foods. you know them. i in full disclosure eat goya black beans about every day of my life. it's a very interesting story. the owner was at the white house here is what he said while visiting president trump. listen. >> we are all truly blessed at the same time to have a leader like president trump who is a builder. and that's what my grandfather did. he came to this country to build, to grow, to prosper.

police using tear gas to disperse the crowd around the portland federal courthouse. the officer was struck in the head and shoulder when he walked out of the building while protesters were trying to break down the door. an arrest was made and police recovered this hammer from the scene. yikes. the harmed missouri couple seen outside their home during a protest have one of their guns seized. police reportedly taking mark and patricia's rifle overnight as part of a search warrant. the couple's attorney refused to say if anything else was taken from the home or if they're facing charges. and a heart pounding moment as a police officer rescues a girl in a raging flash flood. watch this. >> oh my gosh. merit-based immigration system that he has been talking about for some time now. the department of homeland security has taken steps in recent years to start going down that path. so, i think that's what the president is talking about regarding the executive order. regarding daca, he has been very clear that he wants to find a lasting solution for these -- that population. we got to work with congress to do it. unfortunately what we have seen from some members of congress over the last two and a half years they are not willing to sit down at the table and negotiate. the president has been very clear as we find that lasting solution, we also need to address the underlying issues that keep creating these illegal populations coming into the country. what we don't want to be is another two years sitting down at the table trying to find a lasting solution to a different set of individuals coming into the country. so, not only does he want to find a solution for daca, but he also wants to find some lasting changes to the immigration system. i think everyone will agree our

current immigration system is broken and it needs to be fixed. griff: right. so, mr. secretary, let me press you a little bit on clarifying. i think what senator cruz heard and many americans heard was that this executive order would include a path to citizenship, a road to citizenship for the daca recipients and, of course, when president obama crated the dhs pram to begin with it was only temporary. this is something permanent. can you give us more clarification as to what this means and what any action in the coming months will be for the citizenship question for daca recipients? specifically when we look for solution for daca 700, 750,000 individuals in the country. what we know is that program is unlawful program. the supreme court indicated that dhs has all the authority it needs to rescind that program they didn't like the way we did

and it taking a look at supreme court decision and making decisions we need. to say when we talk about lasting solution and talk about a pat to citizenship. obviously that's going to involve congress. the president has been very clear is he going to does much as he can within the executive privilege he has. we will need congress to find a lasting this group. this population can have that path to citizenship it. is going to take that effort from congress, otherwise, we would have done this months and years ago. >> chad i want to ask you about the drug cartels and issue people have when it comes to border security. president trump sent a strong message when it comes to cartels. listen to what he had to say. >> you will not threaten our citizens and poison our children and you will not infiltrate our borders. we will find you and we will stop you and we will put

everybody that we find behind bars. this has resulted in the interdiction of more than 120 metric tons, does anyone know how much that is? of illicit narcotic these actions have denied the cartel billions of various cartels of billions and billions of dollars and cash and prevented the loss of untold american lives and we have seen the results in the united states. jedediah: your reaction, chad? chad chad the president has taken real issu on this issue. while we have many threats facing the homeland there is probably not one more important than the illicit drugs affecting americans every single day. the president whether i have traveled with him down to the border. we were down at the border last month talking about effective border wall system.

again, part of that solution on keeping illicit drugs out of the country or whether we are down in u.s. south come in miami yesterday with the president talking about the efforts, the men and woman of the coast guard, men and women of the u.s. navy intradicketding those illicit drugs coming into the u.s. the president, we have had past administrations talk about the drug issue. perhaps admired it. and the president has really taken some effective action here to stop those elicit drugs from coming into the country. pete: mr. secretary, one you have a lot on your plate, another aspect is the lawlessness we have seen in this country over the last many months in the streets what should be peaceful protest turn violent. portland police officer was hit in the head with a hammer by a man trying to break down the door of a federal courthouse. now, dhs has said you are going to deploy portland, seattle and washington, d.c. under the

president's orders federal property and monuments. what will do you when you find this individual and what is the department doing to protect federal courthouses, monuments, things like that? >> sure. so we have about 9,000 federal properties that the department of homeland security through our federal protective service guards and monitors every day. what we know is there are certain locations you mentioned portland and seattle and others that are a focus for this civil unrest. what the department has done over the past several weeks is we have deployed rapid deployment teams to supplement our fps officers there on site. portland is a great example. portland has been in a stated of chaos five and a half to six weeks. every night we see violent criminals trying to break down. trying to get into that federal courthouse. federal courthouse is where law and order takes place. and we have again, violent

criminals, shooting commercial style fireworks, molotov cocktails into that courthouse. and so what the department did, is we deployed teams there we are starting to arrest individuals. fbi, doj are starting to prosecute those individuals. so we need to take a very firm and effective stance on situations like portland. unfortunately we are not getting the support we need from local law enforcement there in portland that's unfortunate. again, what the president has been very clear on is if the locals won't address this issue. then we will step in and do it. particularly as we talk about federal facilities, federal courthouse there in portland, we have department of homeland security and we have department of justice and other assets there that will continue to protect that courthouse and other facilities around the city. griff: acting dhs secretary chad wolf thank you very much for that please keep us posted and particularly to your officers out in portland, we hope that they will be safe and continue to get that situation under control. thank you, mr. secretary.

it's great to be here and talk a little nascar on a saturday morning. griff: yes, indeed. now, i have got to ask you first, lindsey, what happened? fists were flying last night on friday night. what prompted that and what's going to come of it? >> well, you know what? there has been a lot of talk. we will have to see. it was a lot of confusion. i think what's going to come with it, we don't know. we have got to wait and see how it plays out. that he was the thing you have got to love about this sport is the fact that when emotions are flying. there is a lot of time to digest and process what happened. so, we're going to have to see. but this race at kentucky, this weekend, there is a lot on the line for a lot of drivers in the cup series and i think it's going to be really interesting to see what happens. the one thing i'm looking for mainly is kevin harvick because harvick is on such a roll. his team is so prepared for this track now. they have got their program exactly where they need it to be. kentucky is one track where he hasn't won yet. so i think when you look at what these guys have. a lot of different drivers think this is a huge opportunity this

supported. i mean, look, i expect this race to be much closer. i think the turn here at this moment is quite real. jedediah: mark, is there a concern among democrats that voters, that democratic voters will stay home due to being uninspired by joe biden? >> i think that it is true that if i look at very enthusiastic about the candidate, trump has more enthusiasm, and when i screen it down to prime voters, it favors the republicans by a point or two. not this month but the previous month by a few points. but, you know, the exciting part of the campaign hasn't happened yet. right? the -- what we used to call when i did the 96 campaign labor day on that's when the electorate really gets involved and determines -- i believe this is going to be a super high turnout election. i have think everyone in america

to the increase in testing. in fact, health and human services just opened a series of surge testing sites around the state. but, again, what i'm focused on is on hospitalization and on death rate. florida, unfortunately, has had almost 4,000 deaths but that is nothing compared to what we have seen in new york, and what we have seen in other places. and the thing that i keep focusing on is we have parents within the state of this virus and those local officials are taking appropriate measures. but what the left wants to see are mandatory statewide actions or mandatory nationwide actions and comparing the panhandle of florida, which is very rural, very open downtown miami is like comparing wyoming to, i don't know, downtown manhattan. you know, it is completely different. they have had a completely different experience. and the other piece with disney opening, disney employees over

citizenship by executive fiat. it was unconstitutional when obama issued executive amnesty and it would be a huge mistake if trump tries to illegally expand amnesty. #tell the swamp no #rule of law. we had chad wolf the acting dhs secretary to ask for clarification what does this mean? would it be done by executive order or are you seeking legs? it sounds like when it comes to daca, it would have to be a bill, which would be consistent with what the president has said before. listen to chad wolf. >> when we try to find that lasting solution for daca for the daca recipients. about 700, 750,000 individuals here in the country. what we know is that 3r578 i prn lawful program. we talk about potentially a pat to citizenship. obviously that's going to involve congress. the president has been very clear is he going to do as much as he can within the executive privilege that he has, but at the end of the day, we are going to need congress to find that lasting solution to determine whether or not this group, this

population can have that path to citizenship it. is going to take that effort from congress. otherwise, we would have done this months and years ago. pete: guy, an important point on this just like you could understand that ronald reagan was a credible person to negotiate nuclear freezes with the ussr because you knew how anti-communist he was. in this case you know how strong president trump is on rule of law and stopping illegal immigration, whatever he is trying to do here with merit-based immigration on executive order or in working with congress for some sort of a pathway, comes from a lens of having strong borders and not allowing illegal activity. so i think this is one of those moments where you kind of wait to see what it is without getting too far out in front of it and saying hey does it look like overreach? griff: that's a great pointed, pete. remember, the supreme court didn't knock down the program dockca. they just simply said that this administration did not meet the administrative procedures act and needs to refile it.

i think what the president may be doing here is putting back on the table an immigration bill conversation. because, remember, when the president wanted to essentially trade money for a wall for citizenship for dreamers, it was democrats that walked away from that table. pete: great point, griff. griff: now saying going to do an executive order to introduce this merit-based immigration plan brings back into focus something that perhaps two parties could get together. whether or not speaker pelosi and minority leader schumer are interested in that, we will have to find out. i think the interview in that news yesterday, very significant we will see where it goes, jed. jedediah: yeah, you know, pete, you may be right about the lens through which these things happen. that maybe true in terms of the president trump vs. president obama. but, if you don't want -- you know, whether you believe that these things can and should happen by executive fiat, that should be unilateral, i didn't like it when president obama did it. i certainly wouldn't like it if president trump were to issue

[cheers] >> all right: excellent. >> because it is outrageous that he is in this situation. this man is innocent. he's a war hero. he has served his country with distinction. they have destroyed him and his family financially. we know what that is all about. so i'm going to do everything i can to get mike flynn.

>> now the justice department has released a memo three and a half years old saying that general flynn's defense team is asking what took so long for this vital piece of evidence to come out which looks to appear he is innocent. the memo says, quote: general flynn denied having conversations about sanctions with the russian ambassador. fbi advised that based on this interview they did not believe general flynn was acting as an agent of russia. recall one of the agents who interviewed flynn was now fired fbi agent peter strzok. doj moved to dismiss the charges against flynn in may. last month the d.c. court of appeals in a 2-1 decision poofd to shut down the persian cushion against flynn. back to the memo general flynn's attorney said yet these documents provide more compelling evidence to general flynn's consent to and government's motion to dismiss. in short, there was no crime for many reasons. these documents were known to exist at the highest levels of the justice department and special counsel yet they were hidden from the defense for three years. as you know president trump commuted roger stone's prison

sentence. we await to hear the president's reaction with this breaking news. pete: almost too poetic that the president takes what i think is a great move to commute roger stone's sentence a guy that was targeted in ways no one on the left was for what they did to president trump. and on the same day, we get this letter from the fbi, internal memo that shows that they didn't believe michael flynn was an agent of russia and they didn't believe he was lying. if he said something inconsistent with the transcript, it wasn't for the purposes of deception. that was a piece of evidence they had in january of 2017. yet, they tried to destroy his life just like roger stone's. the president has the power to commute that sentence. roger stone, today, a free man and i think that's a good thing for this country. griff: yeah. not just a piece of evidence. exculpatory evidence which is what sidney powell is harping on. it will be interesting to see where that goes. meanwhile, the president well aware that we have an election in less than four months saying that his opponent, former vice president joe biden is a put pet for the radical left.

not sure i'm going to vote, you don't usually continue the conversation. and some of them didn't have any desire to be on those poll calls. they didn't have the 20 minutes to talk to somebody, they didn't want to do it, so they were fundamentally undercounted. i believe that same thing happening right now. obviously, she's talking about what happened last i election when so many people predicted a win for hillary clinton and didn't expect all those trump supporters to come out and vote and, actually, they did. they got out the vote, and the result was a surprise to many. she's saying that could potentially be happening again, griff. griff: and let's point out that elisse is saw slot kin was a former veteran career cia analyst who flippedded a republican seat. president trump won that 8th michigan district by 7 points. she, of course, won and rode e into town, so i don't think you can discount really the seriousness of what she's saying and what she sees as the reality on the ground. mark penn, former e chief strategist for the clinton

campaign, was on the show earlier this morning, and here's a little bit of what he had to say. >> snapshot in time, my own polls at the harris poll, excuse me, the harris poll showed that in the last two months all of a sudden the president and the republicans nose dived, and the president's ratings on the virus, racial discord took a nose dive compared to his ratings on the economy that feels made up. i mean, look, i expect this race to be much closer, but i think the turn here at this moment is quite real. and i think, you know, as you saw in the midterms, republican and democrat are turn out in very high numbers. pete: we should pull the tape. he probably said the same thing in july of 2016, that president -- that candidate trump was then in trouble. can you imagine, imagine how trump voters felt in 2016 and now they look back at what's been done to the president for three and a half years? of course they're not going to want to answer polls, of course they're not going to want to

admit that. and if you believe national polls that show the president behind 10, 12 points, you're lying to yourself. i think that's the point this democrat congresswoman making. she's trying to say don't get complacent, and national polls can be meant to do that. griff: and just a quick add to that, pete. slotkin said she interviewed six pollsters for her campaign in 2018, the one she hired was the only one who admitted he got anything wrong in the previous cycle in 2016. it's interesting, we'll see what this cycle brings. pete: interesting stuff. this cycle is going to bring a robust debate about what kind of country we want to have. you look at the proposal joe biden released on his economic plan which basically copies the language of president trump on america first and american jobs but is littered with ideas like defund the police, sanctuary cities, getting rid of charter schools. an amazing list of social justice, left-wing, open border, social policies he's pursuing. one of those is defunding the

griff: and you raise a great point because the question are the calls for defunding and getting rid of police coming from residents particularly in the hardest hit areas, or is it coming from folks who are politically driven and partisan from elsewhere in the country and it's catching fire? be interesting to see what the residents in the poorest and hardest hit communities that need police have to say. we had mike salon on earlier who was also saying, hey, by the way? your neighborhood could be next. here's what he said. >> seattle is leading the way in how public safety will be conducted from this day forward. and if our reasonable communities across this state, our state and more importantly our nation don't wake up, this is no longer in front of us at our doorstep. they're coming through the door. and this is a significant problem where crime will rise significantly. and over half if not more of the

that the democrats should focus much more on action than slow gans. i mean -- slogans. i mean, if the democratic party is focused on racial equality, then they should be looking at initiatives that provide opportunity. not necessarily results, but access to equal economic opportunity. jedediah: so, don, here's the thing, if we're going to talk about what the focus should be, so i'm looking at the proposal, and what i see is a lot of money focused on government spending. i see $400 billion, $300 billion additional on spending. is government with spending the solution to the economy right now? >> absolutely not. i mean, i think that the focus is we should be getting the private sector engaged. it's a private sector-based economy. americans generate this economy, and the government role is to set some basic parameters and get out of the way and let us do business and let us build our economy. and these programs where the government goes in and spends

money are not sustainable, and his author to haveically we've -- historically we've seen the result. when they're taken away, the situation is generally far worse than when it started. jedediah: okay. so if we're going to talk about the private sector, would a biden administration be good for the private sector if we're talking about tax hikes, if we're talking about things like increases in regulation? i just, i'm struggling to see what a biden administration do here that would actually boost the private sector and be good for the economy. help me see what i'm missing. >> well, i think, look, we're in a global pandemic, and we were coming off of the biggest economic boom in the nation's history post-depression. so we had a booming economy. and the pandemic has sucked out the energy from that. and, of course, all the quarantines. there's only so much that the government can do, and this is not going to be about tax policy, it's not going to be about more government spending, it's going to be more about how do we come up with a cure, a vaccine, which several are

promising right now. several are being effective. and once we get america back to work, if the policies that are in place in terms of tax policies and economic incentives are in place, you'll see the economy begin to recover. i think what will stifle that is an aggressive change and turn to the left in terms of tax policy. businesses are reinvesting in infrastructure, businesses are reinvesting in factories and in production. and if you take those tax incentives away and pull that money from businesses back to the government, you'll see a tremendous slowdown in the economy. jedediah: it sounds to me though that what you're saying is very different from what biden has put out. because what i'm seeing from him is government investment in industry, is higher taxes. i'm not seeing what your saying, and i'm not seeing -- what, do you disagree with his plan? do you not think joe biden would be the best person to usher in prosperity then?

>> look, i know the vice president, the vice president's a good man. i think it's not him, it would be the policies. if he implements these policies that he's being pulled to the left to implement, i think that they would have a very negative impact on the economy. i'm hopeful that if he were elected, and i think we are a long way from that happening, if he were elected, i would hope he would move to the center. the reality is that the problem with the democratic party today is that they're focusing much more on government's role in terms of being an active participant in the economy. opposed to a government role of leading the private sector into a different phase and providing economic opportunity to all americans through a private sector initiative. and what we need is to incentivize -- jedediah: don, don, not to -- not to interrupt you, but we're running out of time. do you then think joe biden's being inauthentic here and is just catering to a left-wing base, is that what's going on

here? and then he's going to flip to the center if he gets elected? >> i think he's offering a broad men you right now -- menu right now, and i think he would be more effective if he carved out space in the center. i mean, right now americans are focusing on survival, on getting through this pandemic. they're not really focused on november's election yet. they will as we get closer to it. you'll see the polls tighten up, and this will be a much more competitive race, and then you'll really see where americans are in terms of expectations for the next four years. jedediah: yeah. well -- >> it will not be more government spending. jedediah: yeah. i mean, we'll certainly see what happens. it looks to me like he packaged big government policies with slogans that he seems to think won the other guy the election the last time around, but that's just my opinion. thanks for being here, we appreciate as always. >> thank you. thanks for having me. jedediah: and still ahead, one nascar driver is showing her support for law enforcement today. this back the blue truck will

pete: we are back with some exteam weather9. tropical depression fay weakening to a post-tropical sigh e clone as it moves over new york. laura ingle joining us from long island. laura, good morning. >> reporter: yeah. we have seen a big mix of things going on over the last 24 hours. we were out here yesterday, and we got pounded by heavy rain, lots of wind gusts. in fact, there was one wind gust at jfk airport which is nearby of 45 miles an hour, but this storm, tropical fay -- tropical storm fay, has been downgraded

twice since this morning but not before she left behind a lot of rain and a lot of flooding. let's show you what we're talking about. in new jersey some areas got up to 5-6 rain, that is more than the combined total in the month of july. and police in ocean city asked drivers to avoid parts of town because flooding has made some roads impassable. it was a scene repeopled all up and down the coast after fay made landfall yesterday afternoon in the garden state, leaving people to trudge through the water to make pit across streets and intersections. man, oh, man, some subway stops across the city were flood pd, one so bad that storm water was pouring down the stairs turning the underground passageway into a waterfall spectacle. in new hampshire the threat was so severe, it caused the white house to postpone a campaign rally. the event will now take place in a week or two. forecasters say the remnants will peter out, you know,

here to discuss is former secretary of education in the reagan administration and fox news contributor bill bennett, all-around wise guy as well. mr. is secretary, thank you very much for being on the program this morning. when you see the american academy of pediatrics coming out in june saying, hey, kids should be in school for many reasons, now they're reversing course on that. why? >> they're not really reversing course. they are politically positioning, pete. pete: i see. >> i'm sure the washington office of pediatrics listens to these powerful teachers' unions and said adjust your decision. if you read it carefully at the end, they still come out with kids coming back to school, but with all sorts of words using safety measures, precautions, let's make sure things are healthy. the reasons for sound developmentally, social, mental, academic, physical development, these kids need to be back in

school. it's a too manial issue, and it's an essential issue. plus, it is safe. you know, one of the interesting things is the studies that have been done this spring, the ymca did one, brown university did one of daycare centers. pete, a lot of parents know that they need daycare centers, and these are often germ factories. no incidents, virtually no incidences of covid among these very young children who are, you know, tangled all up with each other. 24 countries have sent their kids back to school with virtually no covid. kids are pretty much immune to this both as carriers and transmitters. pete: so if you were education secretary today, could -- what levers would you use to force some states or others that are saying we may not send our kids back? >> well, one piece of leverage i'd use is the american public, and this is one, pete, where it looks like liberals and conservatives agree. 71% of new yorkers -- i don't think most of them are conservatives -- want schools to reopen.

mayor de blasio doesn't want schools to reopen in any full fashion, although all the demonstrations there's no danger there. but connecticut has announced they're going full time. what's happening, a number of people in new york are trying to move to connecticut. so i would just use the leverage of the american people. listen to american parents. they put up with a lot this spring. [laughter] they do not want to put up -- pete: you had the summer on top of the spring, they're ready for fall, you're entirely right. i got that get your take on a tweet the president sent out yesterday. he e tweeted this. he said, too many universities and school systems are about radical left indoctrination, not education. i'm telling the treasury department to re-examine their tax-exempt status and/or funding which will be taken away if this comets. our children must be educated, not indoctrinated. i stood up and cheered when i saw that tweet because we know what these institutions have

become. what can be done? >> yeah. well, as you know, you went to a very fine institution, princeton -- pete: well, it was once fine, you know? >> well, okay. voted democrat and voted again -- buildings and grounds voted for donald trump. anyway, no, there is a lot of indock indoctrination, and the president has the authority, the federal government has the authority. the solomon amendment said if universities do not allow military recruiters on campus, they're not going to be eligible for federal funding. well, how about free speech, the full exchange of ideas and looking at indoctrination under that? i think there's some leverage here, and it's a good idea. consider this, when you look at what the president's saying, look at all the stuff we have going on at universities and now you have the ivy league saying we're probably not going to open this year, i think this could be a moment when a lot of americans say, you know, i wonder if we

need these higher education degrees after all. pete: yeah. >> another thing the president said i'd like the government to look at people's skills and abilities rather than their credentials. pete: man, i hope you're right, mr. secretary. different alternatives, christian schools, hopefully parents are re-examining what their kids are learning. but i've got to get your take the, i mentioned the ivy league, they canceled all fall sports. the big ten says we're not doing any out of conference games, what do you make of collegiate sports right now? [laughter] >> well, both my sons, as you know, played sports at princeton, and so i'm sorry to see that cancellation. big ten, you know, the gophers were on a run here, they were looking pretty good, minnesota -- [laughter] pete: don't mock me. >> here's my solution, pete. we know what the conference is in network, it's the sec. so make two adjustments. send vanderbilt to the sec and bring clemson in, sense kentucky

boycotts over its products, he is refusing to apologize. our next guest is calling the boycott absurd saying the company embodies the best of america. joining me now is president and ceo of the job creators network and white house hispanic prosperity initiatives commissioner alfredo ortiz. welcome to the show. thank you so much for being here. what do you make of the refusal on the part of the ceo to apologize? was it the right move to say i'm not apologizing? >> you know, absolutely the right move. good for him to stand up. we need more ceos like that, that have spines in their backbones to be able to stand up to this cancel culture that, quite frankly, is probably more impactful in a negative way to our society and to our culture than the coronavirus, quite frankly. this is a virus that is infiltrating our entire system of america and who we are, and it really calls to question -- and, quite frankly, calls to light exactly what the radical

left and the democrats are about. this is a third generation ceo, entrepreneur, hispanic, you know, american that is proud of his culture, proud of his country and was proud to be called to serve his president and his country. i was at the table. i heard him speak to the president directly, and i am telling you we are so excited to be able to have co-chairs of this initiative. but to have the left try to basically shame him into, you know, apologizing for his praise of the president and what the president has done for hispanics ridiculous. jedediah: you know, alfredo, it seems to me that trump's outrage to minority communities in particular seems to enflame the left. the most, perhaps. why does that drive them crazy? >> you know what? i really think it's a simple answer. when you have, for example, hispanics, we can just focus on that for a second. 61 million americans roughly call themselves hispanics according to the latest census information that we're looking

at. and they are concerned that that is going to be a population as it grows, it can continue to be, understand our way of life right now as the way of life that they want to have which is freedom, independence and ability to raise your family, have choice in education, be able to work hard and make something of yourself. i mean, when you look at entrepreneurship for hispanics, if they're one of the leading groups of entrepreneurialism 2 to 1 versus the average population. so, for example, a recent poll, jed, that just came out said that if the election were held today, 39 better of hispanics -- 39% of hispanics would vote for president trump. i think it's going to be 41%. jedediah: well, alfredo, thanks so much for being here. the type of outreach that we've seen from this administration is important, and i agree with you this cancel culture is getting very scary and very dangerous. we'll have you back, for sure, and appreciate your input.
