when he and i were on the committee together, and a real sense, it meant you might be giving up your life. you've got to remember that when john was elected to the chair of the student on the coordinating committee, it wasn't that he was the most eloquent speaker, he was the bravest among us. you had to be brave to lead us the way john did. all the forces were against civil rights. it was people sitting against you or coming in against you, it was the police, it was local officials, and that is why you take your life in your hands. john lewis took his life in his hands over 40 times. that is why he is remembered so fondly. today while he was missed when we heard we had lost him. >> bill: thank you for sharing that story.

>> good afternoon. brooklyn was a hot spot once again for weekend gun violence. we will show you some surveillance. they're looking for a suspect who shot and killed a 23-year-old man on saturday. he is seen in the video riding a motorcycle. the number of people shot this weekend up 187% from the same weekend in july last year. this past week new york city saw triple the number of shootings compared to the same week last year. the city as you mention just launched its new and gun violence plan on friday and that shifts officers with areas with gun violence like brooklyn. they also held a buyback. bill de blasio this morning shifting the blame on coronavirus and the court. >> i do think we saw some progress this weekend. we have a lot more we have to do. we do not see the court activity

a lot of it is health-related. a lot of the communities are feeling more and more marginalized and that creates this tender box effect. things become more combustible. that is why i think we need a holistic look at our cities, our urban areas and how we can provide better access to capital, education, health care, and two jobs across the board. i think that is where the president and the congress ought to be putting their attention as opposed to some of these band-aid or worse type solutions. >> bill: your solution? >> when you have murders going up, shootings and new york city, 358%, murders up 86 and minneapolis, 40 per 7% and philadelphia. shootings involving children up 40% and chicago.

106 people were shot and ate weekend, american city, not in the middle east. there is two different things going on. one is the protest, many cases are becoming violent. social unrest. and this plain old crime because, for example in new york city, 411% increase and police retirement. they don't believe their elected leaders have their backs anymore. we need to back the police because this is what happens when you call for defunding the police and your move plainclothes officers from the streets as mayor de blasio has done. you say you're going to cut a million dollars, all the sudden there's fewer police officers, they're not being as proactive, and the result is that innocent people are getting killed unhurt. >> bill: back to you. >> i think, i don't disagree

that we have to show support for our police officers while still pushing for police reform. that is why i don't think the defund the police movement is going to go very far. beyond looking at -- >> bill: defund? >> putting some of the funds into some programs that might address these broader problems. what's not going to work is what we're seeing in portland with the heavy hand of the federal government coming in. officers of the law, federal officials with no clearly identifying marks rounding up peaceful protesters. using tear gas, beating up navy veterans who are not causing any trouble, spurring moms who are protesting with tear gas. that's not going to create an environment that helps decrease crime. that's going to stir the pot even further. we have to find a better

solution. >> bill: here's what he wrote about in "the washington post." maybe trump should not save the city's run by violence. you talk about, there is an argument for letting those experiments play out. experiments such as what? >> lawlessness which is what were seeing. the reality, our states and localities are laboratories of democracies where people can run social experiments without harming the rest of the country. guess what? we are seeing that right now. they're pulling back. they're allowing people to run amok. there is one argument on one hand which says people in these cities, let them live under it. if they experience this crime then may be they will do with the people in new york did and elect republicans, or they can move. the beauty of our country as you can move if you don't like the laws of your city. >> bill: it's unfair to leave

these americans defenseless. it's arguably the president's responsibility to do something about it. is that a reflection on portland or more than that? >> it's portland and all the cities. not everyone voted for democratic leaders. the wealthier people can pick up and move, but poor people can't. you have businesses who invested their life savings, if they leave then they lose everything. these people deserve to be defended. if the president has no choice but to step in, when local leaders in portland, violence has been there and they did nothing. >> bill: 30 seconds. >> let's not over a blow what's happening in portland. you listen to the people on the ground and the journalists who were covering it, they are telling you it's a small group of people confined to a small area of town.

progress. i'm concerned about where we are today with the number spiking back up across the country. i think we have to stay vigilant. we have to stay on top of this. i don't think we should continue to downplay the virus. i don't want to be back in the situation. >> bill: and the book you had strong language towards the former mayor for the 2015 riots. she was with us on friday this last week. she responded strongly against you. what's the purpose of the book? >> the book is, look, the book is about my whole life. one of the topics, the freddie gray riots. we had five chapters on that.
