>> wouldn't you agree with that? >> i just feel -- i don't want to delay. i want to have the election and i don't want to wait 3 months and find out that the ballots are all missing and the election doesn't mean anything. >> calling our election into question is one of the most un-american things that a president can do and he's done it before. he still claims that the previous election that he won by the way, he said it was rigged. >> he's using the office of the presidency to say something that's outrageous and so undemocratic and so frightening that it is impossible not to respond. >> it's probably unwise to suggest changing the election, voter fraud or not. too much is influx already. that's not dem, it's by design. >> we saw liberal meltdown over tweet by president trump pointing out how corrupt the election process could be. the president asked about it today and finds out he was
8:02 am
trolling them to pay attention to the issue. howie: joining us to analyze the coverage mollie hemingway, senior at federalist. griff jenkins, fox news correspondent and in los angeles leslie marshall, radio host and also a fox news contributor. mollie, he knew this would cause explosion, he has no power to change the date in 1845 law, why go there? mollie: he did say he intended to raise question about mail-in balloting. the tweet is classic trump and the media reaction is classic media. this is a story that has been going on for years and years. president trump talks about election being rigged and the media freak out about it. what i think is crazy about it is we have had people refuse to accept the results of the 2016 election for 3 and a half years and then they complain about tweets like this and it seems
8:03 am
that people who are complaining about this should look in the mirror a little bit themselves as well. howie: leslie, republicans are among those saying no way, the president later tweeted. he was trying to get the very dishonest media to talk about universal mail-in voting. was the media backlash justified. leslie: yes, it was, i don't buy it. the first answer is wrong and then you were going to say that when you hear the wrong answer. when you look at the timing of the election and minutes after it was reported that we have the worst economic contraction at the time, minutes later. i don't think the president really knew that constitutionally he didn't have the power. i think after the tweet people rushed in or called and then back peddled, that's what i truly believe. at least we have bipartisan support, howie, republicans and
8:04 am
republicans going the constitution is clear, congress will set the date for the election but it also helps democrats not look so paranoid about him maybe kicking and screaming if he loses going out the door. howie: came 15 minutes after the government announced gdp in the second quarter had declined a staggering 33% so many journalists were saying well, he was trying to distract from the bad economic news but he has been talking about mail issue for a long time. griff: i think leslie is onto something because as the president you have the biggest pulpit and get people to talk about things and whether our country is prepared 50 states to do massive mail-in ballot. we've never had anything like this and should be addressed. however, the wall street journal had an op-ed that basically said it is a bridge too far the president saying that we are going to delay it. that's not going to happen, however, the issue itself needs some focus and it needs to be
8:05 am
hashed out and i think you're going to hear a lot more about it, however, i will give leslie some kudos, you know, it was going to certainly be head lane on many of the president's critics shows and instead they talked about outrageous tweets. howie: a little bit on the economy obviously. obviously jobs suffering during the pandemic. molly, i want to read you from the wall street editorial page, the editorial board saying because there's been criticism of this on the right. the president believes the election would be rig and reconsider participation and let someone run who isn't looking for a excuse for defeat. so it's not just the liberal media. mollie: first off, i want to make point of numbers. everybody knows that the entire
8:06 am
country was shut down for the second quarter and i don't know what they were expecting other than numbers like that. the second is what happens in quarter three and we have had reporting from politico showing that democrats are fearful of economic recovery because they think that will help president trump's reelection chances and people should be focused on that as well. as for the freak out over the tweet, i frankly think it was ridiculous. it was particularly ridiculous given the lack of coverage of all of the problems caused by mail-in ballots. new york is waiting for results of an election that was done by mail-in balloting in june, or at least it's heading into months now. new jersey had a recent mail-in ballot election where they had one in five ballots deemed fraudulent and this massive rush to go into mail-in ballots which is clearly something the media very much want to do, they are not giving consideration for all of the obvious problems that will result from it and particularly since the media are pushing mail-in ballots i think
8:07 am
it's incumbent upon them to be thinking of problems that will arise. some states have tried already but they have many years of practice at it and other people are rushing. -- and it's really bad to not cover something that has to be one of the biggest election issues of the year. howie: i think that is a legitimate issue to be covered and debated. by the way, the 1 and 5 disqualified ballots was in patterson, new jersey. leslie, let me turn it to you, the broader times trump was trying to tell americans they should not trust their own democracy but he would say, he's trying to
8:08 am
interestingly if you look at the numbers in 2016, howie, donald trump benefited from mail-in voting from the military and senior citizens specifically, so republicans thinking this is going to be an unfair advantage for democrats which it seems, it's just not the case and hasn't been the case, the bottom line is the study show that voter fraud is really rare and what happened in pennsylvania points to something that i feel is failing within the trump administration and that's helping rather than demonizing the postal service. if you make it harder for people to do their routes or if they can't have overtime as an example they won't get the mail to its location and that was a key issue with the -- with those ballots. howie: let me jump in. we heard sean hannity that the president was trolling the media with the shall we delay the
8:09 am
election and question mark. now could be unprecedented amount of mail ballots in november election, did it work? griff: i think it did work. let me tell you the atlantic wrote a piece about what mollie was talking about, the chaos in new york, the warning of what's coming. carolyn maloney and patel running in democratic primary and there are lawsuits 100,000 plus ballots and widespread universal mail-in ballots that we really have no tested. there's only 5 states, howie. howie: the president sending federal agents dealing with riots and violence. a quick look at debate on cable

news. >> armed mobs of joe biden voters torched buildings, smashed cars, attacked police officers, they rioted, they hurt people, a lot of people and the media watching closely, lied about all of it. >> if you listen to them -- to him and his apologists and conservative media, you would think that the entire city of portland is on fire and is out of control. howie: mollie, are the media playing down violence in portland and the making president's tactics. >> in portland in particular i think they did a horrible job of explaining what law enforcement was doing there since there were attacks on federal properties such as the marco hatfield courthouse. portland in particular is a city that the news have not covered
8:11 am
well. it was 2 years ago that they had to cancel rose parade in portland because antifa wrote a letter to the city threatening violence because a gop organization was allowed to march in it and the city caved. the city just doesn't have control over the radical elements there and it doesn't need to have an entire city inflamed to say there's a destabilizing threatening element in the city. howie: all right, i'm short on time, quick answers here, leslie, i happened to agree that the violence itself has made back-burner issue by the media. does "the new york times" go too far in putting headline in column by michelle goldburg trump's occupation of american cities has begun? leslie: well, i think it's sensationalistic and gets people to buy papers or read the articles online. if it bleeds it leads. that's exactly what it does.
8:12 am
look, there are people in various cities such as portland or seattle that look at any, you know, the federal government coming in. let's look at portland specifically. federal government coming in prior to last month at the end of june, the incidents of violence have decreased and have be peaceful protests and the feds came in and you have unmarked vans and people being picked and many reacted and many not in good manner, violent manner and that certainly was not the majority of individuals. i think it's what media does. howie: okay, on the point, griffin, quick answer. to "the new york times" credit, peaceful protestors in portland still supported the violent actions of those who were injuring police officers, using lasers, using fireworks, setting fires, you've covered the 3 protests, is it difficult to access the rite tone when you have some peaceful and some
8:13 am
thugs? griff: peaceful protestors by day and around night, midnight gets violent. quick final thought, though, on the -- on what the media has covered this, listen, the, quote, occupation as "the new york times" says it's different in chicago, new york city where you're looking at a possible surge of federal authorities to get the violence not related to protests under control as opposed to portland and seattle where it is purely protester or agitator driven. howie: important point, griff, we will see you later. the president's combative staff against the press on coronavirus and retweeting of highly controversial video and later white house spokesman hogan gidley.

8:19 am
1.6 million americans and there's no evidence that wilson said anything public about it. and in 1957 moderate reaction to it as in schools might close for a few days here or there but you didn't see this kind of nationwide panic inducement that you're seeing with the coverage of this where they are almost rooting for the virus to win over and against america. we have a tough virus and the whole world has a tough virus and i don't see in the media how much is going well and capable we are to handle it. it seems they want to keep everything shut down, schools, churches but mass riots. howie: do you agree with the assessment that the media are almost rooting with the virus? >> dr. fauci and dr. birx highly thought of and yet they are highly thought of but nobody likes me. it can only be my personality.
8:20 am
howie: that in reference to fauci's higher approval rating, leslie. leslie: grow up. sorry. he's the president of the united states of america. the commander in chief, the leader to have free world. he shouldn't care about who likes him or who doesn't in approval rating. he should care about numbers. numbers that are surging in the state that i live in, numbers that are surging in texas and florida, three largest states in the united states of america, that should be a concerned. he should be leading this country, this is not and should not and cannot be a political issue. i live in a household with a man who has to get tested for coronavirus because the surge you're seeing in his office and patients with his partners that he didn't see before. it's not just about the death rate, it's about this virus attacks the human body and the cells in the human body differently than the two virus that is -- viruses that mollie
8:21 am
spoke about. most states that looked it in the rear-view mirror, they came together and listened to what the authorities said and they did it, they locked down and they got it behind them. howie: mollie, as you know much media mockery for retweeting video with doctors endorsed use of hydroxychloroquine, let's play the exchange first. >> nobody needs to get sick. this virus has a cure, it is called hydroxychloroquine. i know you want to talk about masks, hello, you don't need masks. >> very impressed with her and other doctors that stood with her. i think she made tests but i know nothing about it. howie: so that doctor that we heard, has said alien dna has been used in medicine and people
8:22 am
causing virus over sex. of course, they will go over that. >> the big problem is they don't want anything discussed about hydroxychloroquine and it's fine to have a debate. there are people who say and i think this is very -- it doesn't do anything for patients that are hospitalized or near death and other people including quite a few doctors that i think is good as early course of treatment and certainly not harmful, possibly having good benefits. the hysteria about hydroxychloroquine has actually prevented the development of clinical trials particularly for that early stage of treatment. again, not shown to be particularly helpful if you're at the point of hospitalization and i don't understand why the media are so intent on shutting down discussion of this and the way that tech companies actually removed this video. i think actually gives more power to people who think that this is helpful and if they want to -- if they truly genuinely think that this shouldn't be discussed, they should do a better job of managing that debate. howie: all right, i have less than half a minute, leslie, the media pouncing on the

president's admission that he retweeted the video and knows nothing about this woman estela emmanuel. leslie: assistant secretary for health, the trump administration's covid testing said, and i quote, no evidence it's an effective treatment. the fda withdrew authorization of it in june because they found that there was a risk of heart problem especially with people with underlying card ache conditions. howie: all right, i couldn't get neither of you to talk about aliendna. coming up the absolute train wreck hairing with bill barr. is it accurate

howie: house democrats turned judiciary committee hearing into absolute partisan circus as they battered attorney general bill barr and barrel let him respond. >> i have another question for you. on june 19th -- >> actually i need to answer that question. >> mr. attorney general, you did answer the question. >> you said under penalty of perjury, i'm i'm going to answee question. howie: now, at the hearing republican congressman jim jordan played a video that appeared to show journalists ignoring the violence in portland. >> peaceful protests. >> peaceful protestors. >> peaceful protests. >> peaceful protests. howie: but cnn jake tapper calls on jordan to apologize saying he had done disservice and play
8:28 am
what two colleagues had reported. >> there's been largely peaceful protests during the day and at night sometimes turning violent with confrontations between protestors and police. >> the protests after rayshard brooks death were peaceful and as it began to get dark things began to change. howie: congressman jordan defended himself on fox news. >> you had two reporters in that video saying these are peaceful protests while there's a building burning in the background for goodness sake. howie: i've been critical of portland coverage. even partisan video at partisan democratic hearing should barely represent what reporters were saying. james murdoch resigned from board of news corp. which publication and has left fox

the president's tweet which did have 3 question marks about whether we should delay the election until people can properly and safely vote. he now says he was trying to broad the dishonest main street media and as you know this was widely condemned including conservative national review and editorial page. was that tweet a mistake? hogan: no absolutely not. the president was trying to point out that the democrats are trying to absolutely and totally change the way we conduct elections in the country 3 months before election day. it's absolutely insane and what they are trying to replace the current system with is mail-in, universal mail-in voting system that's completely right for the potential for fraud cheating and we see example after example of this, whether it's in new jersey, whether they had to kick out 20% of the votes because they couldn't be verified, 100,000 plus votes not counted in california. we still don't know who won a
8:34 am
congressional seat primary actually in new york from a month ago because of this type of system. it is so much trouble and so much danger and the media know this, they just don't want to report it and i remember a great story actually on foxnews.com where someone's cat got a ballot in the mail to vote. now i understand a lot of cat owners out there feel like their pet is probably smarter than other person, it had been dead for 12 years. howie: you raise legitimate issue, it's obviously not the same thing of talking about delaying the election. in meet the press chuck todd said comments by the president are act of desperation and a president who expects to lose. hogan: that's absolutely as well. chuck todd knows better. they talked about how that would
8:35 am
-- there was no outrage. it was them -- it was them who were pointing to the fact that it could be done and this is how it's going to be done. the president is not talking about it. he wants the election on november 3rd but to trust the postal system with your ballot. let's be honest, a lot of people don't trust with a greeting card to granny much less right to vote for the president of the united states. howie: all right, on the coronavirus the president is back to sparring with reporters this week. i'm going the play this for you. he went with caitlin collins whether he regretted retweeting a video of several doctors who were backing the use of hydroxychloroquine, let's roll it. >> the reason their ratings are so bad is because the coverage is so -- if cnn would be honest and that goes for msnbc but your network is dishonest about the coverage and just about
8:36 am
everything. howie: now what was wrong with caitlin collin's question and shouldn't the president vet somebody before retweeting comments of 184 million twitters? >> hogan: it's universal bias and selective outrage. cnn pointed to the fact that hydroxychloroquine could work. jake tapper tweeted it but when the president says it could work, when the president says some scientists including the doctor at yale pointed to the fact that it could help out with coronavirus, he gets pillory for it up and down. it's absolutely insane. the hypocrisy that the media has the way they cover this president versus the way they cover joe biden is astonishing. i mean, he has taken leadership in this role, he was the one for calling shutdowns from time to time early on while nancy pelosi was out in chinatown and telling
8:37 am
people to go out and enjoying themselves. it was cuomo himself who left new york open 7 days after everyone else shut down and put patients in nursing homes and the media point to cuomo and early listened to medical experts and health experts talk about masks on march 31st, april 3rd he and cd c came out and gave guidelines and one more point it was a month and 5 days later before all of the press corp. wore masks inside the briefing room because they want you to think they rang in the new year with champagne and n95 masks and it just didn't happen. howie: since you brought in joe biden and is ahead of polls and you got into a battle whether these are fake polls but my

larger point is this, is your campaign frustrate bid the fact that joe biden is doing few interviews, public appearances while your guy is going on with chris wallace. >> i think the american people are frustrated, they are taking tough questions economicallywele and joe biden is sitting down there in hiding hole with no real questions at all and no concerns why he's not out addressing the real issues and when he does pop up he gets questions in the media like why did you choose delaware to have wonderful press conference. tell us why donald trump is so bad. he doesn't get asked questions about china, none of those things get talked about as it relates to joe biden and the media because they share the same radical left agenda and no question, he's being filled by the far reaches of the party,
8:39 am
ilhan omar, bernie sanders, socialist wing. he's adopted the platform and pushed on the american people and at a time that we are trying to get the economy back going he's calling 7 and a half trillion dollars in tax increases on 80% of the american people which is insane but he doesn't have to answer the questions. howie: yeah, you're a lot freer to attack now than in white house. barack obama has been doing virtual fundraisers for biden and called president trump, accused of nativism, sexism, stoking resentment to asian americans and i want to get your response and whether you think obama will be a major issue in this campaign? >> well, i'm sure he will be out on the campaign trail for joe biden because joe biden refuses to campaign. i think that's going to be interesting because he needs someone with a little life and vigor talking about joe biden because obviously he has none. but the fact is joe biden that he lied, for example, knowing anything about michael flynn but
8:40 am
it was he himself who we wanted to use the logan act to frame and get michael flynn. it was a systematic effort so the lie that is the previous administration, you know, engaged in were never covered by the mainstream media as you know and when you talk to someone, you know, on the hill and they are complaining about the clappers and brennans of the world. all they got -- >> howie: to be continued. all right, got to go. thanks for being on. hogan gidley, thank you for joining us this sunday. >> thanks so much. howie: top democrat response and we will look at biden campaign and the veepstakes as he gets closer to picking a running mate that's why there's otezla. otezla is not a cream. it's a pill that treats plaque psoriasis differently.

8:45 am
gidley and i'm not sure how donald trump has done a nonfox news interview. he did a cbs interview of katherine harris of fox. he prefers to talk to oann which is not exactly the most balanced organization out there but more importantly joe biden has been doing press conferences, he did one two weeks ago which even hogan gidley just acknowledged and while he doesn't like the questions i think if i remember correctly there was a fox reporter in the audience who asked the question pretty tough about joe biden's cognitive ability so i don't understand what hogan gidley wants. more importantly, this year, this time 40 years ago donald trump was in the midst of a 5-month stretch of not doing any press conferences. july 28th, 2016 -- >> howie: i know but i have to
8:46 am
say philippe he talked to reporters all of the time and did interviews and even as president he talks to reporters. >> he lied to reporters, that shouldn't count. it's not a second problem, it is a problem. howie: okay, let me ask you this because the president has made news this week including the tweet about delaying the election and the comments about that, obviously that's not going to happen and yet in every story biden usually gets one paragraph which is either a statement from a spokesman or prepared statement he's put out, what nominee doesn't want to mix it up? is this a strategy? >> a strategy of threatening to move the election. that's a threat of foundation of our democracy and let's not forget something. there's a difference now and four years when donald trump questioned the integrity. he's now in charge of the place. if he doesn't trust the postal service to do this properly, he's in charge of the postal
8:47 am
service. he appointed the person who runs it. he could say this is what we have to do. the republicans in the senate started with mitch mcconnell have turned down hundreds of millions of dollars to go into the budget to ensure the security and the integrity of our election. mitch mcconnell and the republicans are the ones that are not allowing it, so he cannot simultaneous i will say this isn't working and i'm abroad about it but i'm not going to do anything about it despite the fact that i'm the president of the united states and i have some powers. howie: the president did do interview with abc back in may. let's -- >> that's 14 months ago. [laughter] howie: no, no, anyway. >> i'm sorry. my bad. howie: biden pick kamala harris as running mate, what do you make of veepstakes chatter and the notion it's probably harris because photographer got a look
8:48 am
at handwritten notes of former vice president. >> i wouldn't read too much in tealeaves. i think he had those as reminder because he was going to be asked. as a staffer who has told someone before a press conference, hey, you're likely going to get asked about this, he was just jotting them down. donald trump has been caught with notes, i don't think it's here or there. i don't know who it's going to be. i think we will know within the next two weeks and i guaranty you the next time on the show in the next few weeks, hopefully i will be back, we probably won't be talking about because the vp has not been really the dispositive determinator in the election for some time. maybe since lbj. i believe it's a blessing of riches. he has a blessing of riches in terms of -- >> howie: you have a candidate who would be 78 in inauguration
8:49 am
day. potential running mates, susan rice, congresswoman karen bass. she got a hard time on a couple of shows on fox news sunday as procastro remarks. >> yeah, i mean, i think everyone vets. right now it's the biden campaign internally and media externally and when someone is picked it's rnc and trump campaign and that's a healthy thing for people check who it is and these are all qualified service. donald trump right now is 74, joe biden is 77, it's not like donald trump is some spry young man who is healthy. he's not. if donald trump were to win reelection, he would be joe biden's age during his second term, so i don't you can just say 78 is some danger zone because if it is donald trump shouldn't be running for reelection. howie: all right, philippe.

shortened season is in jeopardy? griff: , well, it's certainly the case now. yesterday we had the mlb commissioner rob manfred telling espn that we're going to play but the players have got to be better, talking about the behavior of the players. we learned a week ago, howie, that marlins tests came back and we are only three or four days into the season. we learned of the tests now. i think what commissioner manfred is doing is laying the groundwork, if we get another slew of tests today, and we'll get them because games are being played all across the country today, in just a few hours, if we get that it will be very difficult for manfred not to consider shutting things down and that would be a really tough time, just an example of the strains, though, you've got the nats are postponed because they're in miami, supposed to be playing the marlins. howie: right. somes players accusing mlb not
