ticket. the one-time primary rival will appear alongside joe biden for the first time in wilmington, delaware. biden made the announcement on twitter and e-mail. harris, taking to facebook, saying in part, i've never been more ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work. donald trump thinks this country belongs to him. but joe biden knows it belongs to all of us. to the people and together the people are going to take it back. in the reaction from the democrats was swift congratulations from every vp contender who didn't get picked to former president obama, former secretary of state hillary clinton and even progressive senator bernie sanders, who tweeted this, congratulations to kamala harris. she stonn understands -- she understands what it takes to stand up for working people, fight for healthcare for all and

take down the most corrupt administration in history. let's get to work and win. it wasn't always a love fest. the california senator showing early in the primaries she wasn't afraid to take on joe biden. >> to hear you talk about the reputation of two united states senators who built their reputation and career on segregation of race in this country. there was a little girl in california who was part of the second class to integration her public school and she was bussed to school every day. and that little girl was me. >> that's a mischaracterization of my he position across the board. i did not praise racists. my time's up. >> reporter: now it's time for president trump to take her on as his opponent. >> i think she's the most liberal person, supposedly in the senate. that's pretty liberal. she's supposed to be the most.

i'm not sure that's what the country wants, that she wants the to raise taxes, she wants to get rid of your second amendment. i don't quite get the choice but we'll have it out. >> reporter: harris is best known in washington in her short three-year senate career for her prosecutorial style. you remember her being tough during the kavanaugh hearings. she was california's first woman to be attorney general. before that, she was san francisco's district attorney. we'll be picking her record apart in the coming days and months. for now, we've got a ticket, biden/harris versus trump, pence, here we go, 83 days. todd: and the picking apart begins right now. jillian: kamala harris' progressive policies coming under scrutiny. todd: joining us now, kimberley. did biden make a good pick?

>> this is an interesting pick for sure. todd: was it a good one, though? you said interesting. >> you have to look when she was surging in the polls when she was a presidential candidate, kamala harris started out really well with 15% she pointed out that joe biden was racist and implied he was for segregation and now she's on the ticket. tulsi gabbard did a great job talking about her record in california. a lot of people understand and know, especially black people, that she disproportionately locked up black men and withheld evidence that could have freed black men in many cases. you have in one case, joe biden, who penned the crime bill and you have kamala harris who is for incarceration. jillian: let's take a listen to some of her stances on policies.

>> if someone crosses over the border illegally, it is illegal. you would decriminalize it. >> i would not make it a crime punishable by jail. i believe we should have medicare for all. i will give the united states congress 100 days to pass reasonable gun safety laws. if they fail to do it, i will take action. >> she is really got. heathergood atflip-flopping. when she saw the polls surgeeveg for elizabeth warren and bernie sanders, she got over to the left. she talked about taking away our guns. a lot of people are not for that, even moderate democrats, all about keeping their guns as well. she is great at flip-flopping and trying to reach her audience. the problem is, the audience wants someone to stand strong so i don't think this is a great

choice. todd: will the harris pick help biden win the black vote. >> absolutely not. there's a lot of people talking on the social media platforms, talking about 2020 is basically a wash and it will be trump again and i think we can all you agree on that one. todd: there we go. we will see. a few more days, 80 plus until november. jillian: president trump doubling down on his promise to send federal backup to american cities under siege. todd: seattle's top cop said she will step down over the lack of respect for police. marianne rafferty has more on the pushback. >> reporter: the president making it clear help is available for cities dealing with nightly unrest for more than two months now. they need only ask. >> we should do the opposite of defunding. we should help the police more. you look at oregon and you look at what's goes on out there, we're willing to help. they're supposed to call and say please send help. they have 10,000 great law

enforcement people there, really, they can take care of it themselves but we would be glad to send in the national guard. >> reporter: instead of reaching out for help, portland is letting hundreds of rioters off without charges. to date, 550 cases have been referred to the da. of those, only 45 are being pursued. the da mike schmidt says while he doesn't condone the violence, it's about the protesters' right to be heard. >> this policy acknowledges that centuries of disparate treatment has left deep wounds. >> reporter: in chicago, mayor lori lightfoot instilling a curfew, tweeting access to the downtown area will be restricted from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. residents and employees whose businesses are located downtown will have access at all times. for the second night, draw bridges were raised and freeway

entrances closed. business owners hoping the cur curfew will provide a break from the lawlessness. >> it's not going to better us as a society to have people stealing from people because it forces us into a militant state and we're not equipped. we're business owners. we're not equipped to defend our stores. >> reporter: and in seattle, police chief carmen best after the city voted to defund her department. >> this is not about the money. it certainly isn't about the demonstrators. be real. i have a lot thicker skin than that. it really is about the over of-arching lack of respect for the officers, the men and women who work so hard day in and day out. >> reporter: and chief best says she couldn't bring herself to carry out layoffs which would hit newer, likely minority officers the hardest. gillian, -- jillian, todd. jillian: thank you. todd: a north carolina man

charged with shooting 5-year-old boy in the head in front of her sers, -- her sers. police arrested him and charged him with first degree murder. the boy was riding his bike when he walked up and shot him. jillian: michael flynn facing a skeptical d.c. court of you appeals as he fights to have his case dismissed. the former national security advisor telling the court he was defended without a prosecutor and he was forced to right the wrongs he perceived and discarded any semblance of impartiality. a three judge panel sided with the doj to dismiss flynn's case. todd: the squad will remain intact. congresswoman ilhan omar winning her democratic primary in

minnesota. she beat a newcomer with over 57% of the vote. jillian: marjorie taylor green won the runoff. some gop leaders distanced themselves from green over her past comments about blacks, muslims and jews. talk about a ring of fire. plus -- >> she put over 1500 people in jail for marijuana violations and laughed about it. todd: kamala harris called out for flip-flopping on the law. where does she stand on top issues? an attorney that litigated a case with her in california says she's all over the map. she's with us, next.

todd: we are back with our big story, joe biden making history by tapping kamala harris as his running mate. so how did she get from california to a record setting candidacy. harmy dillon here to help us chart the course. you and harris are part of the bay area legal community. how is she viewed by that community? >> she started out as a shale i challenger to her boss for district attorney in san san. i was someone who newly moved to the city during that time. i met her do yo during the camp. she was just starting out at that point. she had a mee meteoric ride. she set her sights on higher and higher office, attorney general, then senator, i'm sure her sights are on the presidency in the near future as well. the trail she left behind her was making promises, getting a position and ignoring the promises or breaking them in

favor of doing whatever was needed to get to the next position. so she changed her position on drug use and criminalization and on immigration, on crime, on parole, on everything to get the prosecutor position and attorney general, she was so-called tough on time but she's abandoned those positions in her quest for further power. todd: let's take a quick look at her path. it is rather meteoric, from being appointed to california medical assistants position in 1994, da in san francisco, senate in 2016 and then the rest is history. i want to get quickly to your experience with her in the courtroom. what was she like to litigate against? >> well, i litigated against her office when she was the attorney general and i had a case involving civil rights of a religious minority, the sikh man who wanted a job in the prison department. kamala harris and her team litigated against that and

defended the state's bigotry against this person of faith. more recently, i sued kamala harris earlier this year for her role in prosecuting pro-life journalist david delieden. we believe that she and people in her office violated his civil rights. todd: you have attacked kamala harris' record. so has tulsi gabbard. take a listen. >> senator harris says she's proud of her record as a prosecutor but i'm deeply concerned. she put over 1500 people in jail for marijuana violations, then laughed about it. >> i did the work of significantly reforming the criminal justice system which became a national model for the work that needs to be done. todd: if undecideds are looking for a democrat law and order

candidate. is she it or is she going to flip-flop. >> she's not the law and order candidate anymore. her history was throwing poor people and black people in jail for petty crimes in san francisco to build her record. that is her record. she abandoned that. today she believes felons in prison maybe should be able to vote, she's in favor of letting people out, she's in favor of open of borders, she's in favor of decriminalizing drugs which she was once jailing people for. she has decided in a cunning way that's what's going to advance her agenda and that is all she chairs about, just -- cares about, just to be very blunt. there is no core, no center to kamala harris, simply opportunityism and what -- opportuneism and what will get her to the next role. kamala harris covered up shortcomings of her prosecutors, the drug lab there in san francisco, she left a trail of

with the china virus. so college football, get out there and play football. people want to see it. jillian: even the president likely to be disappointed after the big 10 and pac 12 conferences postponed their seasons until at least the spring. todd: joining us to weigh in, former nfl player and ceo of the brewer group, also former minnesota golden gopher in the big 10, jack brewer. was this the right move by the big 10 and the pac 12? >> you have to question the reasoning behind this move. you know, i'm all for player protection. i'm all for looking out for the best interest of these young men who worked all their lives to be in the situation to play college football. when you look at the numb burkes when you look at the -- numbers, when you look at the facts, the left talks about science and says conservatives deny science, but in this call you just don't see that. since 2000, there's been over 35 players in the ncaa that have

died playing football. when you look across the board, the nfl, the ncaa, not a single player has been hospitalized, not a single player has died from the coronavirus. but yet, you look across the nation, over 800,000 kids are sent to the hospital and emergency rooms every year due to sports injuries and so the ncaa is takee about of both sides of their mouths, showing hypocrisy. you're talking about an organization that doesn't give every player health insurance, basic health insurance is not provided to every player. all of a sudden they want to become virtuous and they're looking out for the best dr. i personally think this is political. i think you have a lot of liberal presidents and chancellors at these universities who are making these calls and i think that they'll do whatever they can to go against the president and go

after -- go against conservative thinking around our country and it's not right. let these kids play. these kids are not getting sick at massive numbers and when they are, they're not even being hospitalized for it. so you've got to compare this to the flu in a lot of ways, for these guys, in this demographic just because they're so healthy and so young. this is probably the population in our country that is the strongest against this virus. let these boys get out here and play. they worked too hard. jillian: bill hemmer was talking to lou holtz. lou holtz of was adamant about them playing. i want you to listen to this and then react to it. >> i think they should play. if you have a legi legit mitt rn you don't want to play. i think we shut everything down for six months. jillian: he's talking about the

idea of giving the athletes the options themselves to play or opt out if they want. what do you think of that? what does the loss of a season like this do to a college athlete? >> have you to give these guys the option. you already have unamerican set of guidelines there, where you have a billion dollar industry that doesn't pay these players. you don't offer them basic health insurance. now all of a sudden you're taking that away from them. think about it, a kid like me, going to college, had i not played my senior season, i wouldn't have had a chance to play in the nfl because i didn't have the size and speed when i was younger. to take an entire season away from these kids, and some folks say push it into the spring but what do you do with the seniors who are trying to reach their goals to set their families up by making it to the national football league, you're going to strip that dream away from them? it's just not right. you have to let the kids play.

it's not just affected the boys' football. in the big 10, each school is slotted to lose about $100 million if they don't play this season. it takes a lot of money out of other sports that depend on football to stay alive. a lot of women's sports that depend on the football season in order for them to continue. so i think you have a lot of colleges that -- athletic departments that are hurt after this situation. jillian: jack brewer, as always, thank you. we appreciate you joining us and offering your insights. >> god bless you both. todd: thanks, jack. you too. two seattle business owners moving out after city council defunds police. jillian: they say the decision hurt their business more than the pandemic. the tea shop owners join us live, next. ♪ it seems such a waste of time. ♪ if that's what it's all about. ♪ mama if that's moving up. ♪ then i'm moving out.

jillian: good morning. welcome back. joe biden and kamala harris will make their first appearance as running mates today. todd: peter doocy who was selected by joe biden despite reports to the contrary shows how they went from opponents to allies. >> reporter: the challenges of vetting and rolling out a running mate during a pandemic are on display in a new photo, joe biden and kamala harris appearing together on a zoom call. joe biden said he felt connected to her. he said they met through his son, beau. he had enormous respect for her and her work. he said there's no one's opinion i value more than beaus. i'm proud to have kamala standing with me on this campaign. the trump campaign is out with this, quote, not long ago kamala harris called joe biden a racist and asked for an apology.

she never received. clearly, phony ca kamala wilbury her morals and try to bury her record as a prosecutor in order to appease the anti-police extremists controlling the democrat party. harris is the only black woman, the only south asian american woman to be on a major party ticket and is set to debate mike pence this fall. she's been out of the race since december when she dropped out of. when harris was a biden rival, her campaign launch in oakland drew one of the largest crowds than anybody in the field all year. out oshe created the most viral moment, surprising biden with a challenge to his record on bussing. but months later, she was telling reporters to leave joe alone. today, it' -- when she was asked about reports about some day she

would be biden's running mate, she turned the table. >> i think joe biden would be a great running mate as vice president. >> reporter: it's not harris/biden, it's biden/harris and the first event will be here in wilmington. jillian and todd. todd: peter, thank you. digging deeper into the policy issues, here's kamala harris' stance on some of these issues. she praised the los angeles mayor for slashing police budgets, supports medicare for all, that allows some private insurance, wants you abortion rights -- wants abortion rights protected and calls herself a progressive prosecutor. speaking to sean hannity, president trump doubling down on harris and her left-leaning views. >> she wants to raise taxes. she wants to get rid of your second amendment. no guns for protection, no nothing. she's a very strong -- she's very strong on the second amenment, getting rid of it and very bad to the military. she wants to cut the military,

wants to cut spending for the military and the vets and, you know, i don't quite get the choice but we'll have it out. we have a great vice president named mike pence and he will take care of business just like he did the last time against a different candidate. todd: speaking of which, vice president pence sounding confident he can take on senator harris in the vice presidential debate and win. >> joe biden and the democratic party have been overtaken by the radical left. given the promise of higher taxes, open borders, socialized medicine, it's no surprise he chose kamala harris to be the running mate. my message? congratulations, i'll see you in salt lake city. todd: they will face off in october. jillian: seattle's police chief resigns and her department defunded, with law enforcement

seemingly in shambles it's no surprise months of unrest have made for bad business. now, a local tea shop is closing doors because they no longer feel safe in the emerald city. joining me live what drove them to the decision, owner of steepology teas. thank you for being here. >> thank you for having us. >> thank you for having us. jillian: why don't you start by telling me what ultimately brought you to this decision. joe, i'll start with you. >> it was a decision made after a lot of dislib brace. we've -- deliberation. we've been there for three and-a-half years. it was our first store. we've grown it to several stores. we saw over the past several years, despite fpd officers' best efforts to stem the tide of homelessness and drug use in front of our store of, city hall, our seattle city hall seemed to continue to hobble

their efforts to make change. it got so bad that in january of this year there were multiple shootings a block away from our store in which several people were murdered and several people were injured. and so at that point safety became paramount and then when the seattle city hall started talking about defunding the police, we had to start thinking about closing the store instead of pressing forward. jillian: let's go ahead and take a listen to carmen best on why she decided to make this decision to resign. >> this is not about the money. it certainly isn't about the demonstrators. i mean, be real. i have a lot thicker skin than that. it really is about the over-arching blacarching lack or the officers, the men and women who work so hard day in and day out. jillian: do you see the lack of respect for the officers she's talking about? >> absolutely. we have seen nothing but the

seattle police department's best efforts to help aid the business owners in the downtown corridor, only to see them basically being spit on and being treated very poorly, basically being crucified for the absolute horrific wrong-doings of some. what that does is it hurts ought of us. it makes it very difficult for us to function in our everyday business lives, to keep our team members safe. our own daughter was assaulted in our store, in broad daylight, fpd at that time was swift to arrive and to help us with that situation. but it's our other team members that are now telling us they will not work in the downtown corridor. you can't keep your doors open if you can't keep team members there to feel safe. it's an absolute liability and ethically wrong. jillian: i know have you a couple other locations, and another one that was set to open

this fall. joe, what is your plan from here? and those employees who are no longer going to be working at this location, will they go to other locations? >> yes. so we've been fortunate enough to transfer those employees to other stores in the surrounding area, so fortunate for that as well as our online platform, our online orders at our warehouse, we're using them there as well. we were set to open two more stores actually in seattle, one in capitol hill and you know what happened there with chop and seattle city hall allowing that to happen and also pioneer square which is another area in seattle that is slowly declining and in the past kim months it's been a -- couple months it's been a complete falling off a cliff. >> we will not be opening in the downtown area at all. also, other businesses have affected us in that they fled as well. >> we're not alone. >> safety being one of those concerns, we lost bed bath and beyond on our block, we lost

joe, you think she's a pragmatic moderate? >> well, let's not use my opinion, todd. let's look at a government watchdog website called govtrack. us. all they do is they track your votes and what your achievements are or lack of achievements are in the senate and in this case with kamala harris. look, they rank her below bernie sanders, okay, as one of the most liberal members of the senate. and they site the fact she has no bipartisan legislative achievements to her name in all of her time in the senate. she backs the green new deal, medicare for all, healthcare for undocumented immigrants. this is not somebody you can call a pragmatic mod of rest. you can't even -- moderate. you can't even call her a moderate in these situations. she represents california, not a place swimming with pragmatic mod rests. thimoderates. this is the media trying to say

the biden campaign couldn't write any better if he tried. it shows how the scales are tipped in this election with the media coverage. todd: i think you may have broken the rules because the democratic party has submitted rules on you how you can talk about kamala harris on the airwaves. here's the statement. quote, we tend to monitor coverage and we will call out those we believe take our country backwards with sexist and/or racist coverage as we enter a historic moment. we will be watching you. i was tongue in cheek with that there. seriously, how worried should we be when somebody that you are covering gives you rules as the media? >> this is called working the refs. it feels more like a threat. it seems that any criticism regarding past actions of kamala harris, past statements or even her qualifications will automatically in more of than a few cases be characterized and racist or sexist or both.

that's how you shut down criticism by labeling the person or in this case the journalist who may be asking tough questions or analyzing her record as i just did as sexist or racist. in an era of cancel culture and the woke mob dictating, it might work. todd: looks like college sports won't be returning this fall but cancel cull can churr will. -- culture will be. what will the summer of unrest mean for cancel culture on campuses this fall? >> we've seen cancel culture on campuses for a long time now, particularly over the last couple of years. i remember guy benson shared a story with me, saying that for him to speak on campus -- guy benson is not a pr provocateur. all the security he needs just to do a regular speech in front of a group on campus it's crazy.
