balancing act. that party is has to figure out who they are trying to cater. >> to he was trying to balance two different things. bun was the image portraying himself as a unifier who would bring the country together. i thought he did so very effectively. the other part of the balancing he wanted to talk to the base. we did see a lot of policy in here fleetingly mentioned but like, for example, when he talked about the economy. i counted 11 items that he reeled off when he talked about covid, he had six things that he was going to do. most of those are tout left of his party. but, again, it was a balancing act. that was red meat appealing to swing voters. steve: in the aim of the bernie sanders wing of the democratic party is to simply get joe biden elected now and then as is he president pull him much much further to the left. right now when you ask most
3:08 am
people why you would vote for joe biden, a majority of the people who are in his corner say i'm voting for him because he is not donald trump. although for anybody but donald trump. right now there are three groups of people anybody but donald trump. there are the people who love donald trump who would vote for him at any time and people thinking to them selves you know, if the democrats win and they take over. what would they do to my taxes. what would they do to my industry? what would they do to the economy? those are the questions people are asking. now the hard shell that has protected joe biden for pretty much a year is done. he has got to leave his basement. he cannot go out. he will have to make his pitch for what he plans to do. at the same time, have you got the president of the united states as we just heard in the griff report, he was in pennsylvania reminding that

3:10 am
is that every day the president of the united states has been out making statements. so every time you play a soundbite by joe biden, you got one of the president, so this has been -- it's been pretty effective messaging for the president. >> i mean, it has been. if you look at the visuals as well, you know, president trump going to scranton, pretty large crowds to greet him there, enthusiastic crowds. and, of course, this is how he was elected in the first place through shear husband sell and pushing a message that hey, i'm here to change things and drain the swamp if you will and going to people directly. you know, a lot of folks really prevent that. the forgotten voter. the forgotten man and woman in this country. and what we have seen not just in america, around the world, a pushback against the establishment elites who by the way dominated the dnc. they you would want to put together a platform that shut out hulaian castro initially
3:11 am
shut out andrew yang. more old white republicans who had lost any sense of power within the republican parties than they did of progressives. so the establishment still rules in the dnc and i think that's going to be something that resonates with a whole lot of independent voters and people who are tired of the status quo. brian: i wants you to hear what joe biden -- so he outlines his plan for taxes, the economy, and we can't forget about climate change. watch. >> we can and will deal with climate change. it's not only a crisis it's an enormous opportunity. an opportunity for the lead the world in clean energy and create millions of good-paying jobs in the process and we can pay for these investments by ending unnecessary loopholes and the president's 1.3 trillion-dollar tax give away to the wealthiest 1%. i'm not looking to punish anyone
3:12 am
far from it. it's long past time the wealthiest people and biggest corporations in this country paid their fair share. brian: is he even looking at the tax cut? he didn't give a tax cut to the wealthiest. he gave a corporate tax rate people who work for corporations. in the big picture, charles, will they remember president obama and what he did with the $800 billion stimulus package that joe biden was in charge of, how the shovel ready projects were not there and how the infrastructure projects never took root? or are we going to have short-term memory loss and think this is a fresh start? >> they are hoping the memory loss is shorter term than that you talk about tax policies and regulatory policies of president trump. we saw blue collar rages eruntsd to the upside. blue collar wages came up from a slumber. they had absolutely died. when president obama and joe biden came into office, year over year blue collar wages up 3.5%. when they left they were only up

2.4%. that is a gadgetsian move. you could not keep up. you could not pay your bills and have the same type of lifestyle had you 8 years prior. substantially higher. the irony is all those policies help the people in this country who needed it the most. that's the irony here. if you are going to reverse that you are actually saying blue collar workers say goodbye to those raises you were getting up until february because they are not coming back. ainsley: after the president said to boycott good year because of their policies he said they were playing politics. good year has clarified their policy and said you can wear gear that supports law enforcement. here's the quote. it says good year strongly supports our law enforcement partners and deeply appreciates all that they do to put their lives on the line each and every day for our communities. we have made it clear candidates can express support for law enforcement through apparel at good year fingerprints.
3:14 am
what's your reaction to that? >> it's good. but it is very late. every american needs to pay attention. this reminds me of what happened with harley-davidson when they mishandled a lot of things when they ships jobs overseas and president trump wanted them out and they were defensive about it. at least good year tyre was smart enough to say let's clarify this thing. any corporation that has establishment an environment where managers take it upon themselves to tell their elmly nos they can support one thing and can't support another. they are doing a terrible job. we are hearing they wanting to get ahead of the curve not just to be shareholder driven. how about making sure all your employees feel safe, safe to say they back the police. they should not be worried about their physical safety, their jobs or upward mobility because they back the police. how about every corporation in america take note today and make sure this never happens again.

3:41 am

3:42 am
the thursday before elections day, we don't know that we can get the ballot out and get it back in time to count. and now it's become a big thing and there is all sorts of money being talkinged around, which is unusual because the post office in financial filings has made it clear, we have enough money to run right through 2021. >> yeah. this is such a fabricated crisis. it's a typical move by nancy pelosi to try to divert because, you know, in the middle of their convention you would think they would be talking about their agenda. they didn't mention their agenda at all. in fact, in the democrat party platform they mention donald trump almost twice more than they mentioned jobs or confronting china because that's not what their focus is they hate the president more than they care about people or rebuilding this country. but, look at the post office. i mean, they have said they have enough money to run through the middle of next year if we don't give them another dime. they just turned down a $10 billion loan request and nancy pelosi saying give them 25 billion of your hard earned dollars or else the election
3:43 am

steve: meanwhile former vice president joe biden and democrat s shifting the narrative during the dnc that just wrapped up making this election a choice between darkness and light. >> donald trump doesn't deserve to call himself commander-in-chief for another four minutes, let alone another four years. >> i did hope for the sake of our country that donald trump might show some interest in taking the job seriously. >> donald trump has divided our country, diminished our greatness and demeaned everything. steve: but after four days of attacks on president trump, was uniting the country really the message from the dnc? here with a discussion the executive washington editor of the wall street journal, gerald sibe. i went to journalism school with this guy, jerry good morning to you. >> thanks steve it's a long way from lawrence to here isn't it? steve: a couple of journalists right now. jerry, how do you summarize what
5:53 am
we saw over the last four nights with the dnc? >> well you know, it was interesting because i thought the two things you learn from this convention. this campaign at least according to the democrats is going to be much more about character than about issues. you heard a lot more about joe biden's personality and empathy than policies, and i think that leads you to the second thing i learned which is if you had any doubt that the fall campaign is going to be a referendum on the incumbent and the democrats are happy to have that, that's what you're going to see and i think that's what we saw and in the convention and it's what we saw in the vice president's speech last night. third point surprised me a little bit. how much of the speech was devoted to the coronavirus. the coronavirus is still a big issue. it's not going to be a central issue and that tells you democrats the magnitude of the problem is still weighing on voter's minds. steve: you know, donald trump is a big part of your brand new book, and people got to get it. it's terrific called "we should have seen it coming" and what it does is it looks back over about

the last 40 or 50 years of the republican party and how it has morphed into what however you would describe it right now, under donald trump, right? >> yeah, it's different. look i think it's morphed from ronald regan to donald trump and that happens to be kind of the ark of my journalism career so i'm fascinated by this four- decade period but also morphed from reagan conservatism and the overall message of the book really is that people were shocked by donald trump in 2016 in the republican party and out, and the message of the book is you shouldn't have been. this was building. this didn't just happen overnight. it happened with pat buchanan and sarah palin. steve: a whole populist movement right? >> absolutely building from beneath the feet of the establishment leaders of the republican party and they didn't really appreciate it. steve: sure and jerry donald trump has changed the republican relationship with the business community. he's changed conservative ideas when it comes to trade and
5:55 am
immigration. i mean, he's come a long way. i know he mentions ronald regan a lot, but he's come a long way from what ronald regan stood on and ran on. >> yeah, exactly and that's in part because the republican party is a different party now. fundamentally different than it was when ronald regan came in. you know, reagan brought in a lot of reagan democrats so there was kind of a beginning of what the republican party is now but it's now much more populated by a working class, blue collar voters who moved into the republican party because they wanted to be there for cultural reasons didn't like gay marriage, didn't like transgender rights really didn't like abortion rights being expanded. that pulled them into the republican party and then when they got there they decided conservative economic messages didn't work for them. the globalization didn't work for them, the free-trade policies didn't work for them and donald trump walked through an open door because he appreciated and realized that more than most people in the party. steve: exit question, when it comes to the first tuesday in november. do the republicans who have kind of been drifting in the middle
5:56 am
do they come back and unite around trump? >> that's the question, i think and you go back to joe biden's speech last night. there was a fascinating message in which he said i want to be the president for all americans it was an overt appeal to moderate republicans and independents to stick with him. there's another question, steve which is a similar one which is are there still hidden trump voters out there? people who hadn't yet been activated in 2016 and available now. steve: check out his new book, sir thank you very much. >> watch and listen to the radio show. chris christie is one of our guests. bye everybody. >> sandra: any moment now postmaster general louis dejoy set to testify. it is the first of two hearings on his decision to make changes to the postal service before election day. earlier this week he said he would stop all changes between now and the election but democrats still accusing the administration of trying to slow the delivery of mail-in ballots. the white house is denying that. we'll take you there live when that hearing begins. we begin with dueling messages on
