arthel. arthel: all right. thank you very much. eric. eric: arthel, as president trump and the republicans await the start of the convention with great anticipation, white house correspondent kevin cork is live on the north lawn of the whi whe house with the latest there. what is the mood as we start this week? >> reporter: i just had a conversation with a white house senior staffer and insisted that the real difference between what we saw last week with the democrats and what we expect and anticipate seeing from the republicans at the rnc is a message of positiveity. you heard lucas allude to it. and the charge is simply this. democrats, they argue, spent last week really criticizing and complaining about the country whereas the republicans hope to focus on the way forward. a message of renewal and rebirth and that's really what they hope to communicate to the american people. hogan gibley was talking about it earlier today on fox news
9:04 am
channel. >> the democrats we saw for the last several days has been talking about how horrible america is, we are inherently evil and the cause of the world's problems. that's not the way we see america. it's the greatest idea ever realized. the president is going to talk about how this is the land of opportunity, the land of heroes, the land of promise, the land of greatness. >> reporter: as you also know, we're getting more information about who the speakers will be, obviously coming up you heard lucas allude to that. some of the names we did anticipate, we also learned that it's very likely and probably i'm going to double check that, ivanka trump will now introduce the president as he seeks his party's nomination for a second time. should make for a very interesting week, eric. eric: yeah, of course we have the -- as we heard from mark meadows the economy and dealing with these other issues and there's coronavirus, tonight the president's going to talk about the virus research and a possible vaccine. what do we expect? >> reporter: very interesting, because this is a circumstance
9:05 am
where it does touch on a number of different sectors. it's not just health. it's also the economy. we want people to get back to their lives and let's be honest, you and i have talked about this at length. a number of americans were really knocked out by covid-19, economically families are struggling. we learned last night from kayleigh mcenany that yes in fact the president was going to be talking about it. let me share the tweet. i think the tweet came down a little after 11:00 at night. if you weren't up late and you didn't get a chance to see it, don't worry. i've got you covered. i happened to be up when it came across. the news conference with the president tomorrow, that would be today, at 6:00 p.m. concerning a major therapeutic breakthrough on the china virus, secretary azar and dr. hahn will be in attendance. so you may be asking, okay, so what are they going to talk about. two things they really want to hammer home. number one, the push to get a vaccine is ongoing. as you know, the sooner a vaccine can come to the
9:06 am
marketplace, the sooner we can get americans safely taken care of and hopefully school children and others can get back to their lives. that could be part of the conversation this afternoon. as i get more information on a granular level, i promise to pass it along, eric. eric: that's interesting they talk about therapeutics. there's been a lot of the high inflammation and trying to reduce that in the heart and this sort of thing if you get coronavirus. meanwhile, kevin, there's a scorching secret audiotape apparently of president trump's sister, former federal judge marianne trump barry. man, oh, man, what's in this tape? >> reporter: i tell you what, timing is everything, right. here we are on the eve of the rnc and the post has a pretty tough hit piece on the president, a secret recording of as you mentioned marianne trump barry. that's his older sister, saying that the president was cruel among other things. i want to warn you as you listen to this audio, it's a little on the blue side. >> oh, my god.
9:07 am
i'm talking freely. you know it's a change of stories, the lack of preparation, the lying, the [bleep]. >> reporter: that recording coming out not terribly long after the president of course laid to rest his brother, the white house issuing a statement in fact from the president quoting now, he said every day it's something else. who cares. i miss my brother. and i'll continue to work hard for the american people. that's part of his statement, eric. eric: apparently the source of that tape is mary trump who is the president's niece who has written that very hard-hitting book about the president. all right, kevin on the north lawn. thank you. arthel. arthel.arthel: two major storms expected to hit central gulf coast this week, tropical storm marco is near hurricane strength as it swirls over the gulf of mexico and it could make landfall in eastern louisiana
9:08 am
tomorrow. tropical storm laura now over haiti, could also become a hurricane. parts of louisiana including new orleans, now under a hurricane watch. we have fox team coverage, phil keating is in key largo, florida. we're going to start with meteorologist adam klotz tracking the twin storms. adam. >> hey, arthel. yeah, a very unique system is what we're looking at right now. marco is a little closer, nearly a hurricane right now, winds at 70 miles an hour, spinning in the gulf of mexico. likely making landfall by tomorrow afternoon so this has sped up from some of the original forecasts. there's the track running up along the louisiana coast. what you're going to see is ultimately both of these storms are at least potentially going to be making landfall in a similar location. that could be a big problem. jumping to tropical storm laura, spinning over haiti. this one going to take a little longer but ultimately running to a similar location. so once it runs over some of the
9:09 am
tropical islands it gets into the gulf of mexico, able to heat up and warm up very quickly and suddenly you see a path that is running up along the gulf coast so louisiana, possibly getting up to a category 2 storm. this is the stronger of the two tropical systems we're paying attention to. these are our current forecast tracks. as you know he with these systems, there's plenty of room over the next couple days, the next 12 hours for this to shift a little bit. they could end up right on top of each other, at least where the paths go. that would be a worst case scenario. the ground would be saturated. the second storm would be able to do more damage. no surprise, tropical storm watches, warnings, hurricane watches in some locations as we begin to prepare for these storms. i'm going to leave you with precipitation models. this is from the first original storm. you see some of that rain really piling up around new orleans. but then if you get another hit, suddenly you talk about a lot more rain running up just a little farther off towards the west. again, arthel, as i throw this back to you, these could end up right on top of each other of. there's a little bit of time to watch that occur.
9:10 am
so this is going to be something to really pay attention to for the next 12, all the way to 48 hours or so. arthel: i'm paying attention for sure. meteorologist adam klotz, thank you. eric. eric: yeah, new orleans, arthel's hometown, so for more on where marco and laura could slam our team coverage continues with phil keating, phil is in key largo, florida with the conditions there. hi, phil. >> reporter: hi, there, eric. conditions are really brilliant right now. but the entire florida keys is under a tropical storm warning right now. the worst of tropical storm laura should impact probably the lower keys, key west, sometime tomorrow throughout the day. state of emergency is in effect for the entire county, monroe county, meaning anybody out living on a boat or in a mobile trailer is supposed to get out and up onto the mainland. laura has blown through puerto rico with several inches of rain
9:11 am
and steady winds. right now it's raining and blowing across the dominican republic and haiti. in a kim hours it's forecast to move west, northwest through the length of cuba before making it out into the gulf of mexico and hitting those warm waters and strengthening into a category one or two hurricane. that other tropical storm of course, that's threatening the same region from texas really to the florida panhandle is tropical storm marco. its winds are 70 miles an hour right now so it is almost a hurricane as we speak and it's expected to turn into a hurricane in a few hours to a day as well. monroe county emergency planners are going to meet this afternoon and decide whether or not they're going to open of up a hurricane shelter down in key west but for most of florida, almost the entire state, neither of these storms is really much of a threat so up in the mainland, miami, there hasn't been that usual rush on gasoline
9:12 am
stations and publix grocery stores and hardware stores. the real threat is where these two storms are coming. which is louisiana in particular, east coast of texas, as well as coastal alabama and mississippi and maybe even into pensacola. back to you. eric: phil, we'll be watching. looks really beautiful where you are right now but as you know that could change. thanks. arthel. arthel: meanwhile, on the west coast, dozens of fast-moving wildfires have scorched a million acres in california and the weather could make things even worse for firefighters. president trump issuing a major disaster declaration to get federal funds to the state. christina coleman is live in la's pacific palisades area with more. christina. >> reporter: well, arthel, california governor gavin newsom released a statement yesterday, thanking president trump for his partnership on this effort. it's expected to really help the people here in california. this declaration will help
9:13 am
people in counties affected by the fires, be eligible for housing and unemployment assistance and crisis counseling. fires from the lnu lightning freenesconference have scorched0 acres. it's now the second largest fire in the state's recorded history. and the scu lightning complex fire in santa clara and near by counties is the third largest fire in the state's history. there's been nearly 600 fires in california since last week and together they've burned nearly 1 million acres state-wide and many of the fires were sparked by lightning hitting incredibly dry areas in northern california. tens of thousands of people have been forced to evacuate statewide and hundreds of structures have been destroyed, also more thunderstorms are expected for today in the bay area, which could bring more dry lightning and gusty winds, obviously worsening fire conditions out here for crews working around the clock to get these fires under control.
9:14 am
arthel. arthel: christina, i understand there's been some dramatic pictures of two firefighters in particular rescued by helicopter friday night from the woodward fire that's raging in northern california. what are you hearing from the tactical officers that helped in the rescue? >> reporter: arthel, we're hearing from this officer who is being called a hero, apparently these firefighters didn't realize how close they were to these fast-spreading flames. fortunately, they were able to be rescued friday night. >> all right, guys, i'm going to get you out of here, okay. one of you needs to put this on. it's like a jacket, okay? >> all right. >> reporter: deputy sheriff and tactical flight officer chris hoss was attached to the end of a rope that was attached to a helicopter, allowing him to help rescue the trapped firefighters from a ridge line in the woodward fire. take a listen. >> the butterflies were there until we took off. then it truly it's just game

why do so many putin critics end up getting poisoned? >> i think the answer is quite obvious. they're not just being poisoned. some of them were gunned down. some of them died from blunt force heart attacks. but the net result is the same. if you are an enemy of putin, if you're a critic and if you stay in russia, even if you're staying out of russia, your life is at risk. by the way, navalny was not flying from serbia. it was from siberia. he was traveling around russia and he was landing in a small russian city in siberia and only 48 hours later there was a permission from kremlin to fly navalny to berlin where he hopefully could get proper treatment and his life, pray, will be saved. make no mistake, putin -- eric: i'm glad you pointed that out of. he was in siberia, he was there

he focuses on the facts and that the regime is robbing the people, cheating them. now i think putin's watching belarus where people are protesting their leader. at least a quarter of a million people fill the streets of belarus cities protesting and putin is afraid that having a popular leader as navalny being around could cause another headache because while putin made constitutional changes, protracting his rule until 2026, he knows very well that it's not about the date in the clan taxer it's not -- calendar, it's not about election, it's that people are getting sick and tired. they rise against a dictator. if they have leaders like navalny, all bets are off. eric: he was attacked in 2017, blinded by acid, partly blinded

finally, what should president trump do, what should the administration say? how would you want the white house to react? >> look, i suggest they read my article today in the dallas morning news, when i talked about restoring american global leadership. without american global leadership, nothing is going to happen. we need a new policy of containment as we needed in 1945, 1946 when the communists seemed unstoppable. this is the only language dictatorships understand. the dictators do not stop at their will unless they're stopped and whoever is in the oval office in january 2021 must rethink american foreign policy, not leading from behind, not embracing dictators, but demonstrating that america's back in the game and america will lead the free world against terrorists and dictators. eric: garry kasparov, outspoken person for russian democracy, a leader for human rights around the globe. thank you for joining us and
