sunday. we can expect the president will be asked about the tapes, he has a briefing at 6:00 p.m. eastern about possible developments in the fight against the coronavirus. the briefing live on fox news channel as it happens. right now kevin corke, north lawn of the white house with a look at what was actually in those recordings, morning, kevin. kevin: great to be with you, who would record, record a family member for hours and then release that information to the public and then have it perfectly timed right before the president's convention unless, of course, it wasn't secret at all but you just don't know. all we can tell you is by my measure, any fair measure the comments were provocative. and that i can tell you this, is there are a number of comments that were made and i just want to be careful in how i frame them, mary anne trump in secret recording have said his blank

tweet and lying, oh, my god, i'm talking too freely, but you know, the change of stories, the lack of preparation, the lying, holy blank. so that's kind of how it all went. so what about the white house reaction to the comments and the story itself, well, here is what the chief of staff mark meadows had to say about it earlier today? mark: i think the president has already spoke, another day another political attack. what i find interesting any family member that would tape 15 hours of a conversation with somebody, obviously to promote an agenda, she's been very vocal in her support for -- for joe biden. >> pretty amazing when you get right down to it, this from the white house, in fact, a statement from the president himself every day it's something else. who cares? i miss my brother and i will continue to work hard for the american people. not everyone agrees but the results are obvious, our country

will soon be stronger than ever before. that from president trump reacting to that piece in the post. you mentioned 6:00 o'clock news conference here. i actually saw the tweet come across my phone or a little bit after 11:20 last night from kayleigh mcenany and as you mentioned, leland, she talked about this idea of a possible breakthrough with respect to therapeutics. as you know, the white house has been super eager to open the gates and let people get testing and make sure that the possible vaccines are not inhibited so ultimately they can be safe and distributed to the american people. it'll be interesting to see what the president has to say about all of that, but as you saw there in the tweet, a couple of other high-profile individuals, azar and hahn, i'll i'll be there for you. leland: unlikely coincidence with dnc and rnc and the same week that the president layed brother to rest.

the great country that i live in and love. in contrast, we are going to describe an aspirational and inspirational vision for america with concrete policies on how we make american greatness a reality and how we have done it in first term and how we will do it in a second. leland: you make a good point in terms of how divided america is, wrong track, right track, the way people view what conceivably be nonpartisan issues in partisan way. take, for example, the issue of coronavirus and the number of deaths from the coronavirus. this from our colleagues at cbs news, number of u.s. deaths from coronavirus has been acceptable or unacceptable? republicans say 57% of republicans say acceptable, 43% of republicans say unacceptable whereas 90% of democrats say the number of deaths have been unacceptable, 10% of democrats say acceptable. i'm trying to understand who would think the number of deaths

is acceptable. steve: leland, it's a shame that the pandemic has been politicized. it's been done by the democrats and not our side. i reject the whole premise. silly and insulting question to ask. of course, unacceptable. if you read into that it's clear that it's acceptable in -- in relation to expectations, for example, we were warned that there could be millions of deaths in the united states and on that basis, we are relieved -- never acceptable to have premature but we are relieved it's not as bad as it could have been. i think this is really important. left is playing games trying to act as if things are uniquely or singularly bad in the united states regarding the virus. when we look at the united states versus pure countries, we are doing far better than industrial nations like the uk, belgium, sweden. leland: depends on the metrics. i don't want to get in that

debate. you made your point in terms of the poll. let's just -- per diagnosed case or population on and on. let's not get into this -- go ahead. steve: why do you not want to get into it? leland: i don't have those statistics in front of me whether it's by case rate or diagnosed case or by population. >> steve: i'm saying population. hey, it's your show. leland: your tweet today from kamala harris said this, a reminder that harris is anticatholic bigot, are you now or have you ever been a member of the knights of columbus? steve: yes. leland: is that going to be an issue at the convention this week?

steve: i'm not sure it's highlighted at the convention but it's important for the american people to know this and in that article i give the exact quote from kamala harris when she's on senate judiciary committee, she's on the committee, reviewing the nomination of ryan bush, she went after him in written questions and attacked his catholic faith. she attacked him specifically for being member of knights of columbus, the largest fraternal catholic organization in the world, it helps men the live better lives of faith and to be better husbands and fathers, millions of hours of community service across the country and not just catholics but all people, however, kamala harris saw fit to assault him. it's not only wrong but unethical because the constitutional says there can be no religious litmus test for holding public office in the country. the fact that she chose that line of attack, i think reveals that there's a deep bigotry in her heart and she showed it

closing night and even republicans including president trump who told our own steve hilton, it was a pretty decent speech, not a lot of people saying it was terrible, so that's good, but here is the thing, if you go by the ratings and social media interactions, biden wasn't the star of the week, that award goes to michelle obama who had almost 5 times as many interactions on social media as biden did for their speeches, does that worry you? >> al: not really, gillian, i think the president did a great job and he's a decent man and that came through in his speech which is going to be a great contrast this election between biden and the president. and if you go back to cortés comments of kamala harris, you see the path that the republicans are trying to take, tearing down and hatefullness and if you want to apply his standard of bigotry to kamala harris words about catholics, you would have to say he says

it's deep in her heart, you would have to take the president's words and say it's draped over him like a white cloak. if you apply cortés standard of bigotry which i found shameful by the way. gillian: but, al, here is the question, is it enough to be a decent guy as you say, the former vice president is, is it enough to not be a bigot, does that qualify somebody to be commander in chief and serve as the leader of the free world? >> al: absolutely not. of course, he's much more than that. he's a very accomplished former senator, former vice president who helped us get out of recession. no one has been more successful at working with republicans in the congress than joe biden and that's the track record he would bring to the white house. we need someone with a can-do attitude who can work across party lines to bring us out of this mess and donald trump has shown no interest in working

with democrats and prefers to cater to his base and joe biden wants to biden the appeal made to all americans and look after all americans. gillian: so if the party is so proud of joe biden's many decades long record in government, why wasn't that featured or the feature of the convention? why was the talking point over and over again from the mouth of every speaker that took to the diais that president trump was unfit. what matters his is biden himself and his record and his leadership? >> al: well, i think the democrats are anxious, the democrat party is anxious that the same thing that happened in 2016 can happen again and when you roll out business plans an explain them in great detail like secretary did that won't be

enough to roll the dice with president trump, we don't want that to happen again. i think that's a large part of why he was under so much attack. i do think that in the coming days and weeks you will see a greater focus on the economy from biden's campaign, a greater focus on what he plans to do, but last week was about rolling out the notion that he's an acceptable alternative, better alternative and one poised to lead the country into the future and to greatness. gillian: i want to get your response to something that i just got in a few moments ago. we don't have it to put it up in the screen, a quote from a new yorker article that's out today interview with president barack obama. here is a quote from president obama, if you look at joe biden's goals and bernie sanders' goals, they're not that different from a 40,000-foot level, is that helpful? >> al: i guess it depends on the audience. perhaps not the folks watching this show but one example that comes to mind when i hear the quote is that both of them would

like everyone to be covered with health care, joe biden goes about it in a different way, bernie would do medicare for all which joe biden rejects. but biden -- vice president biden would like eventually every american to be covered with health care. this administration at this moment that we are having this discussion is suing in supreme court to take away all the protections to have affordable care act, so i'm happy to have the election debated on health care. i think that's probably the best example. joe biden would like people, another example, to get reimbursed for college. bernie would probably want everyone to be be reimbursed. both of them want to help people and give them more opportunity and leg up to be successful in the country. gillian: right, al, thanks for pinch hitting for us, we have to leave it there. we will talk to you soon. thanks. leland: al always answers the bell when we need him to, we appreciate it another riot in portland saturday night, demonstrators and police clash

gillian: protests turned violent in portland, rocks, bottles, all getting thrown at officers by demonstrators all of it forcing authorities to, again, declare a riot. matt finn with the latest on that, matt. matt: once again riots and brutal assaults, videos appear woman being punched and knocked to the ground. the police had rocks and hard objects thrown at them. portland police made dozens of arrest friday and saturday. >> this is the portland police bureau, this has been declared unlawful assembly because people are throwing projectiles. matt: last night saturday was the 87th night of unrete in city of portland. yesterday afternoon hundreds of opposing protestors clashed with each other. around noon right-wring group

and various antifa-type counter protestors clashed with those groups and violence broke out around the city, 14 people were arrested in portland last night. police say they confiscated bucket of condoms with unknown fluid and bottle of water with unknown fluid. demonstrators also placed the american flag and protestors chanting black lives matter and video shows opposing groups clashing in portland, assaults caught on tape, police using crowd control agents, portland police say they are investigating criminal acts and are asking witnesses to come forward and in denver, there was also violent demonstrations, a group of up to 100 people gathered outside of police department and set trees on fire, broke windows and threw

fireworks at officers. 9 people were arrested and here in washington in oh limpia, hundreds of protestors gathered yesterday, some supporting black lives matter and others backing the blue, gillian. gillian: matt finn, live in seattle, thank you. leland: we bring in acting dhs ken cuccinelli, there's talks that things are getting worse. >> i don't know if they are getting worse every weekend but this city we had more cities involved. we had this maybe a month as well and it didn't keep expanding but, you know, what concerns me this weekend is you now have opposing groups intentionally showing up in the same places at the same time and clearly the intent is to mix it up and, you know, having been a state attorney general, policing 101, when you have opposing groups is you keep them

separate. leland: portland police, we have different video -- >> that was a complete failure. leland: portland police let them go at it, they didn't have the manpower to keep them apart or let them go at it. the federal courthouse that had been under siege for so long, things moved away from it a little bit, but the bomb threat closed federal courts, same pretext that was used back during rodney king riots but then president h w. bush to call up the marines and declare the act and if federal courts in portland can't operate? ken: well, first of all, this president hasn't taken any actions off the table and that being said, what we are dealing with here is people in the order of hundreds, not like los

angeles in the early 90's with the rodney king riots where it was literally an entire swath of one of america's largest cities, so you're literally dealing with tens of thousands of people potentially violent, and you know, the tragedy here is this is all controllable if the governor would simply continue to back -- or back up, she's pulled out her state police, the local police and bring in her own national guard. she has over 7800 national guardsmen who she refuses to activate to contend with the situation in portland. oregon has the resources to solve this problem and yet they refuse to do it. leland: it would also help -- it would help if they also stopped letting people out with no bail who they have arrested for rioting and assaulting police officers. ken: connect. leland: this video is different

than the past where quote, unquote, protestors, rioters, whatever you want to call them, have not gone just into the sort of downtown area like they did in denver last night but they actually went into neighborhoods and they stopped people from getting home, they were intentionally trying to sort of inflict a very violent and difficult situation on people who are just trying get a good night sleep. at what point, if the governor is not willing to do something and the city police either aren't willing or unable or don't have enough manpower to do it, at what point does the federal government start protecting people who are trying to get a night sleep in their neighborhood and being turned around by groups that come ready for a battle with shields and swords and long things to beat people with? ken: yeah, so the crossing of the residential line is really one of those things that at

least i personally feel like is an important escalation and i mean that in a negative, of course. people's homes are their castles. we saw this in st. louis most famously but this is intentionally intimidating tactic on the part of -- i won't call them protestors because they're intimidating, they are criminals. leland: right. ken: when you have local authorities that won't -- and that's the word here, won't solve the problem and some encourage rioters and criminals, should the federal government step in and as i said, the president hasn't taken any options off the table. i don't think we are going to ever broadcast how we would deal with that, but this is a pathetic failure of local and state officials and -- and -- leland: one of the things in the act would make it impractical to

gillian: large waves of the south and midwest are trying to constrain coronavirus even total deadly cases continue to decline. this astrotropical storms advance to gulf coast raising concerns for states that will have to fight coronavirus and storms at the same time. aishah hasnie trying to fight this. aishah: 6 states have seen over 10,000 cases in the last 7 days. 11 additional states have had more than 5,000 cases in the last 7 days. georgia has been pretty hit pretty hard here surpassing 5,000 deaths this weekend with 252,000 total confirmed cases. georgia tech fraternity now under lockdown after 17 student members tested positive this weekend. the virus baffling people on the

front lines. >> we don't fully understand what covid is and -- and how it affects us on a day-to-day basis. you know, it's like a ghost basically. you don't know when you're contracting it and you don't know who you're passing it to. aishah: florida is approaching the 600,000 case mark. it would become the second state to do that right after california, however, the daily new cases, dropped significantly in that state since their peak back in july. in texas, state health officials say that there's a backlog of test results in that state which would not only affect the number of new cases but also basically affect the number of how those counties in that state, how they are trending, that could be a troublesome occurrence, the state is behind florida for the total number of cases. now the president plans to unveil a potential breakthrough

positive but not a single one of them has been hospitalized. they are going to have the flu, they are going to have the virus and it is dangerous but not as near as dangerous for young people. the unfortunate people look at it like it's cancer. they are less people die under the age 20 from covid than influenza new years ago. leland: that's governor of mississippi where football is next to god only in terms of concerns, here is the tweet he put up. long tweet and we will skip to third page. we are in the middle of a pandemic and we have to make sacrifices that are painful and we also have to try to provide a safe environment for life as we know it in some capacity. there are many people whose lives are challenged because of -- larger change because of sports, they never get an education otherwise. will college athletics ever look the same to your point, we try to manage sickness among college athletes to zero?

>> i don't know if the country will be exactly the same. you know, so many times to be a leader you have to look at it from both points of view. i had to look at it from a player's point of view and doctors only look at it from their point of view. one person is going to die and we have to do anything. the numbers on month of may was more than last year, you look at economic hardship on people, i've been quarantined for 7 months. my wife passed away two months ago but it wasn't from covid and it was long-term illness, from cancer, when in the world is it going to end. i just think that sometime don't keep me alive from preventing me from living. let me live my life. leland: hold on, coach, you make a good point. these aren't professional athletes and we know baseball players and others made the choice to play or not to play. these are students. isn't there a level of care that is entrusted to the coaches and to the universities to perhaps keep students from making decisions that are putting them

from across the country many of the local communities that house them are not as thrilled. so joining us now to talk about this is mayor of state college pennsylvania ron and illinois state senator john, ron, i want to start to you first. upenn has had fraternities hosting maskless and hundreds of kids running around without ppe on, tell us how folks in your community are feeling about this? >> i think there's a great deal of anxiety in the community, gillian, we are a university town, pretty much dependent on p enn state academically and residents throughout the year are pen nerving state students so we are not a very big town and you can imagine the impact when just north of 40,000 students arrive as they have

this weekend, during the last week more or less. there's a great deal of anxiety among the -- the residents of state college, if you want to put it that way, permanent residents, students are residents too but i'm talking now about the permanent residents, so, yeah, i think that the university has done a great job in trying to prepare for this. they've worked very hard but that, you know, fingers crossed, this is a grand experiment and we will -- we will see what happens. gillian: yeah. grand experiment not just for you guys but for the students but for the entire country. john, you guys have this pretty unique as i understand it covid -- it's a rapid diagnostic saliva test that you're using for students in the state, are you having success with that? john: yes, i'm proud of my alma mater of illinois, approved saliva test with rapid results

having a serious problems, keep in mind that a major university like penn state draws students from all over the country, all over the world so it's a great deal of attention being paid to that, so that's been done. when the students arrive, the university will be testing every day a sample of students and the university as i said has prepared corridors for quarantining and done just about everything that you can do in my opinion to, you know, to -- if you're going -- the decision to open was the big decision, they decided to open although a lot of the classes, perhaps the majority of classes will be on line but students will be here and that doesn't change much for the town. the town is the same whether or not courses are online or face to face. gillian: yeah. john, quick last word for you,

hi, mark. mark: leland, good afternoon, like democrats, republicans are holding unconventional convention this year. organizers had originally thought this was going to be a massive celebration like we saw in cleveland 4 years ago. the coronavirus, of course, making that a different story this time. the convention at one point move today florida but then pushed back here to charlotte. we are getting a better idea of what things will look like this week including monday with roll call vote and the theme being the land of promise and then the land of opportunity as well as land of heroism, land of greatness with speeches every night this week. we also know that we will be hearing from more than just the president, high-profile republicans including senator tim scott as well as former south carolina governor nikki haley and un ambassador, delegates tell us they are eager, though, to get the convention underway. >> it's totally unchartered territory. those that are here are excited
