violence we've seen in democrat-run cities all like kenosha. minneapolis, portland, chicago and new york. many others. democrat-run. there's violence and danger in the streets of in democrat-run cities throughout america. this problem could easily be fixed if they wanted to. just call. we're ready to go in. we'll take care of your problem in a matter of hours. just call. we have to wait for the call. it's too bad we have to, but we have to wait for the call. we must always have law and order. all federal crimes are being investigated, prosecuted and punished to the fullest extent of the law. when the anarchists started ripping down our statues and monuments, i signed an order immediately, ten years in prison and it was a miracle. it all stopped. no more statues.

they said that's too long as they looked at a statue. they said ten years in prison, i think that's too long. let's go home. during their convention, joe biden and his supporters remained completely silence about the rioters and criminals. spreading mayhem in democrat-run cities. they never mentioned it during their entire convention. never once mentioned. now they're starting to mention it because their poll numbers are going down like a rock in water. it's too late, joe. in the face of left-wing anarchy and mayhem in minneapolis, chicago and other cities, joe biden's campaign did not condemn it. they donated to it. 13 members of joe biden's campaign staff donated to a fund to bail out vandals, arsonists,

anarchists, looters and rioters from jail. here tonight is the grieving family of retired police captain david dorn, a 38-year veteran of the st. louis police department. a great man and a highly respected man by all. in june, captain dorn was shot and killed as he tried to protect a store from rioters and looters or as the democrats would call them peaceful protesters. they call them peaceful protesters. we're honored to be joined tonight by his wonderful wife, ann and be loved family members, brian and caylan. to each of you, we will never forget the heroic legacy of captain david dorn. thanks for being here. thank you. >> that was quite something. ivanka trump introducing her father said washington has not changed donald trump. donald trump has changed washington. we can tell you this. washington has never seen anything like this. the republican convention on the south lawn with a fireworks display overlooking the washing to be monument and the national mall. a speech that was definitely long. definitely was woven in with

some optimism, policy specifics and really going after his opponent joe biden. in fact, he mentioned joe biden 41 times in this speech where he was really making the case that you can't get down the democrats' road. nothing that we've seen like it. >> the fireworks are still booming away here. they lit up the sky with "trump 2020." these conventions are something else. the president using his opportunity to be at the white house here in washington the fullest extent possible. he had a very positive finish to the speech tonight. he said in america, nothing is impossible. he talked about 10 million jobs in ten months,putting a woman on mars a vaccine bring the end of the year. so overall, i would say very optimistic outlook, although he

did not mince words when he talked about joe biden. >> you think there wasn't going to be policy specifics, they were in there. if you think anybody had problem with the trappings of the white house, they have more of a problem tonight. this was something watching the fireworks. our all-star panel is with us. chris wallace, brit hume, dana perino, juan williams, donna brazile and karl rove. chris? >> there were impressive fireworks on the mall. but i have to say i was surprised at the lack of fire works in the president's speech tonight. first of all, it was far too long. 70 minutes exactly. i thought at times it felt like a state of the union speech, lick a campaign speech. the president went through all of his accomplishments and they are a great term and considerable. then he went after joe biden.

he had good lines. he said biden has spent his career outsourcing american dreams. biden's record is a shame for roll call, betrayal and blunders. biden's plan is not a solution to the virus but a surrender. i have to say in his delivery, i thought the president who we have seen really turn on a crowd was surprisingly flat and didn't seem to have the bite that he usually does have in his speeches. i agree with you. he laid out an ambitious plan for a second term, ten million jobs in ten months. bringing medical supply chains back to the united states. dealing with pre-existing conditions and we have to point out he hasn't done that in his first term. one other thing we have to note, that is the event itself. the fact that there were 2,000 people in close quarters on the south lawn there with no seemingly -- very few with

masks, no social distancing, ignoring all of the public health recommendations. i suspect that will get a lot of comment in the next few days. >> okay, britt. your thoughts. adding to the lines, joe biden's agenda is made in china. mine is made in the u.s. joe biden's a trojan horse for socialism. a lot of lines there. the opera singers -- >> yeah, hard to compete with the opera that we heard before the festivities. and now packs and emotional wallop. i'm almost tempted to stop and wait. >> they were waiting for you. go ahead. >> yeah, sure. anyway, yeah, chris has a point. the speech was very long. i don't know that any speech is an hour and ten minutes can work very well. the book on speech making is

somebody speaking is about 13 minutes so an hour and ten minutes is pretty long. you know, you heard me say earlier this week, the president has a case. he does indeed have a case and he made it tonight and made it and made it and made it. he was to suggest a little flat. he's done very good speeches before. but tonight he seemed to miss the excitement that he generates in himself when he's ad libbing. so nonetheless, overall as a convention, it's clear that this show and that's what it was, packed more wallop than what we heard last week. it did. >> it's interesting when you think about that. we have seen the president all week long. we've seen him every day doing

performances or moments in the white house, i should say, and we've heard from him last night. usually the big finish is the time night. so maybe the president didn't save it all for the final night. he spread it out over the week, dana. >> i think we have to remember that conventions are for the party's faithful. this is where you want to thank your volunteers, you come together. they couldn't all be together in charlotte. the white house wasn't the first choice. it was the third. charlotte was the site. he thought about jacksonville. ultimately they decided to do it here. i agree. it was very long. he did seem to pick up in terms of energy. that's when he started going after joe biden in particular. there was really good lines. you mentioned a couple of them. i also would add this one where he said biden may claim he's an ally of the light but wants to keep us in the dark. you can see him have a little lift there. he did a significant portion on coronavirus. defending his approach to

dealing with it. also i thought his section on law and order was the best part of the speech. i would say he said something that 98% of americans are going to be able to agree with. this is a bipartisan agreement where he says the most important election in the history of our country. i think that after he's two weeks, we know the democrats feel the same way. so it's on november 3. >> it's on. quite something. one of the most powerful things before the president, juan, was ann dorn, the widow of david dorn. she was here tonight. the president referenced here in his speech. her speech to the convention was quite powerful. >> yeah. i thought even the sight of her in the audience with her family and again, so interesting because it crossed racial lines. you can see people -- she's grieving over her husband's death and the violence in st. louis. but you know, again, i just --

i'm a little bit disappointed. my colleagues have said it was flat. i think president trump on script, reading from a script is not president trump on the ad lib being spontaneous. he has that magic when he's spontaneous, when he can stir a rally. that just didn't happen for him tonight. i expected there would be fireworks before that amazing show on the south lawn. those are the best fireworks that a fireworks lover has ever seen. i come down here on fourth of july. but that -- it struck me more as a rerun. we've seen so many of those lines before. it just didn't have the punch that i expected. even as someone that can be critical of the president, i expected tonight to be a grand show. a grand speech. i'm wondering what happened there. >> you know, karl, when you read certain sections of the speech, they are very effective, i think, on paper in terms of

trying to persuade the voters to put donald trump in the house in the first place in wisconsin and pennsylvania and michigan. one section here for 47 years, joe biden took the donations of blue collar workers and gave them hugs and kisses and felt their pain and flew back to washington and voted to ship their jobs to china and other lands. then he sent your sons to war. strong stuff, karl. >> very strong. as chris wallace pointed out. i'm a numbers guy. i downloaded the speech. put it in my computer and categorized what the paragraphs were about. it's interesting. he went after biden but out of the 5,000 words, 564 are divided and devoted to going after the democrats. 10% of the speech. so you know, a relatively small portion of it though it was effectively written and grabbed our attention. interestingly enough, the second term agenda was 401 words.

that was 7%. the biggest part of his speech was devoted to a defense of traditional american values. >> patriotism. the second biggest portion was devoted to promises made, promises kept. 956 words. and law and order was third. 831 words devoted to that one issue. 636 words devoted to the covid response. just like we saw last night in vice president pence's speech, robust response to the covid crisis, which i thought was wise last night and more wise for the president to address it correctly. >> donna, let's be honest. he was going to get criticized with whatever he did. he laid out his accomplishments and went after joe biden. joe biden came on cable networks today for the first time in a long time. not ours but others. he said he would go travel to

other places, michigan, wisconsin, minneapolis. our democrats worried there's a bounce out of this convention? >> i'm sure he's going to get a bounce. i'm not worried about the bounce. that is what we look for in turn out the vote. he promised an upbeat speech. i brought my best party dress to the event. i have to tell you, i love the music, the fireworks. i agree with juan. they were absolutely fantastic. it was low energy. he was like stringing together the best of donald trump to try to make a song out of words that didn't really go together. but you know what? this was donald trump. it was his audience, it was held at the people's house, a house that he doesn't -- he may occupy the next four years or may not. this is what i like about conventions. we get a chance to see both parties. we get an opportunity to listen

to that vision and now it's up to the american people to decide who they will hire to go back into their house next year. so i'm looking at that house right now. can't wait to get back in. >> great place for us to leave off. thank you all, panel. it's been great working with you for over two weeks. we went from a parking lot in wilmington to the south lawn of the white house hire. but really, you got to see both parties lay out what they are fighting for. the next 60 plus days it will play out in front of us. >> we've got at least three debates ahead of us and a fourth with the vice president and maybe a fourth presidential debate if that ends up happening before the early voting starts. so there's a lot to be laid down in this before november 3. we'll be watching it really closely. these two parties had a chance to put on the best show they could the last couple weeks. it's been a pleasure to watch it

the feet of donald trump, he wasn't going to stand for that at all. >> look, if you think about it, donald trump saying you're not go doing be safe in joe biden's america, all the video being played is being played in donald trump's america. these guys are rooting for vial lentz. that's what this is about. >> you think the president of the united states is rooting for the violence because he thinks it helps him politically? >> i think he views it as a political benefit. >> mayors and governors from minnesota, wisconsin, oregon, denied the president's attempt to bring calm to the streets. they rejected it all together. so are these the leaders that we want to turn the keys of the country over to? they all vote for biden. the ones that engage in this disgusting political calculation. so they're putting partisan interesting above the safety of our people? trump doesn't need political wins to push him in the right position. he's always been there.

substantively, the democrats were so pessimistic, so down on the country. not explaining their policy positions. republicans were eager to talk about policy. every night was a focus on policy achievements, whether it's criminal justice reform, education policy. they seemed wanting to tell the country about why they do the things they do. it was also a big indictment of the media itself. going to this convention and seeing the story being told that is completely hidden by the media or lied about by the media about the accomplishments of the trump administration. i think that explains a bit about why so many people in the media are not having the best night. they know the democrats didn't have a good convention and the republicans did and its frustrating to them. >> ari, watch the tweets being sent out during this address by members of the media over there. they were angry that people

weren't socially distant and didn't have masks on. seems like the country is craving normalcy. they like seeing people back together again. we're a social people. we want to be together. is that criticism going to land and cut through the optimism of tonight? >> it will for democrats. for democrats, this is what they really they look at a scene like this and they can't identify with it. i just thought hearing applause was refreshing. haven't heard that in six months. i was struck when i look at the difference between the two. the democrat convention is about donald trump is bad. the american, the man, he's bad. what donald trump laid out tonight was something much deeper. it was what will happen if the democrats win? it's societal. it's cultural. as the president put it, he talked about speech codes and cancel culture and conformity. he talked about the violence in the cities. that is societal. that is the implications if this

to career politicians for salvation. in america, we don't turn to government to restore our souls. we put our faith in almighty god. >> molly, you heard this applause when the president very often referenced god and the almighty providence on the pro life question. that is really where he got the applause. how significant were the religious undertones tonight? >> not just tonight but throughout the convention again. there were these themes of redemption and opportunity. it wasn't just about having people give prayers to begin or end the evening, which is standard. it was woven through every -- most every one's speeches. people were being allowed to talk freely and openly about their faith. and it was in strong contrast to some of what we've seen in the

culture. the embrace of pro life values and not just be in a speech but many speeches. reaching out, ernestly seeking black voters to come join the republican party and doing it based on policy and not just platituded. going through all the things that the trump administration has done to try to gain black voters and gain their trust and get them to vote with republican party this time around and they were real things. funding for historically black colleges and universities. criminal justice reform, job growth, wage growth that benefits black men and women. this sun like anything we've seen with the republican party. it was just less scared about talking about these things openly, whether it was faith, race or any of these issues that the republicans have not done a great job with previously. >> ari, i worked for president reagan the last couple years of his administration. the optimism of this week and

especially tonight, it -- i got a lump in my throat. took me back to when -- i was in my early 20s, walking these grounds and giving tours in a domestic policy shop. it was lee greenwood, embracing the reagan optimism. how can that be for the young voters. that we're not a dark place, a place of great opportunity? teach that to the kids. i got that tonight strongly. >> that is always part of an election. there's always a group that just wants to feel good about our country. if things are really bad, they want to change. they want to get rid of the incumbent. if they are hopeful and that patriotism and nobody does it like the republicans, makes the press whine a lot but you have to love it more. it's part ant parcel of republicanism. we wear it on our sleeves. it's about the flag, too.
