front line of the pandemic and shut down orders. as a state senator, what would be your approach to a situation like this? would have you at all embraced the idea of a shutdown to deal with, to combat the coronavirus pandemic? >> i think i would have done a temporary shutdown, maybe two weeks or maybe even up to a month, 30 days at the most just until we figured it out. and when i mean figured it out, meaning okay, well, we will wear masks or we will determine what is safe enough to go out or in. i just think that adults should be able to make their own decisions. after a 30-day period. and if people want to take the chance to go somewhere, that is absolutely their right to do so. will: certainly understand the message of embracing individual choice. help me understand if you were in a state senate you would be looking at a shutdown of bess business for a length of period of time that seems to be

somewhat in contradiction with the choice you made a few months ago. is it not? >> no. because did i actually shut down for the period of time. and then when we were shut down for a month and other businesses were thriving all around us, and the virus didn't seem to be spreading throughout the quote, unquote, essential businesses. i thought, you know, it was definitely fair for my business to be open as well. and if people wanted to occupy or go in to my business, we absolutely had the right to open. will: right. so after a period of time open back up and let businesses decide if it's time for them. what about the way texas is handling the pandemic now. do you approve of governor abbott and texas legislature and how they are handling the coronavirus now? >> i do not. we still have a statewide mask mandate which i feel is ridiculous. i feel like if a business owner wants to require a mask to come

good to see you this morning. >> good morning, family. will: it is confusing. if i look across the where sports has been canceled college football big ten and pac-12 decisions made in states largely run by democratic voters. gretchen whitmer has totally said the big ten made the right decision. how will joe biden salgtedz president trump with these decisions? >> that's a good point. first i want to say condolences to the family of chadwick boseman definitely a hero tom of us and definitely that family is in our thoughts and prayers. just to pivot is i don't understand what the play is on this. it is clear when you see even teams like the dallas cowboys and other southern states saying look, we can actually take the proper precautions to make this work. i think they are just hurting their own base. i think -- though matter what political ideology you are, you are a sports fan. and i think the people are more in tuned to what's going on in

the country than democrats give them credit for. so, i don't think this is the right line of attack for them. i think overall their message is that this is the president's fault when it comes to the coronavirus. but what we're seeing is a shift in the poll. i think, you know, what every story that i go out and shoot we always say who is the villain of the story? well, the president has been able to correctly identify china to be the villain of the story. and i think that's why some of the public polling -- people may be upset at football being canceled but i think more people are starting to blame the government in china that did not let the world know that they had this virus going on. jedediah: yeah, lawrence, you know, i want to ask you about the public perception of all of this. i recently saw a poll that showed that the public in large part stands with the players in protest when they decide if they don't want to play right now when they decide that they want conditions met, when they want

to have an active voice in social justice that was a little bit surprising to me i hear some people all the time talking about how sports has gotten so political and a turnoff. what do you think public sentiment really is on this issue right now? >> i think that during the pandemic, a lot of people saw abuse of the state whether it was the mother who that was taking her child to the playground and was arrested or you had luther just on from migrate state of texas that her salon was shut down to people that were abused by the state when it comes to losing their life or the bad apples of police brutality. i think that shifted public sentiment. and so i do think people do stand with the police. do they want to see some action? of course they want to see some action. you can't just have a protest. you have to have a list of ideas that you are going to governor. you wanting to change policy. so this really doesn't surprise me at all because the country has moved on this issue.

pete: lawrence, i want to expand on that a little bit. because you talked about abuse of government power and how the black community oftentimes feels like is and is perceived differently by some corners of law enforcement. how do you advance the conversation without acknowledging that, you know, jacob blake was violating a restraining order? he had a sexual assault warrant out. he had had a knife or didn't have a knife? he put one of the officers in a head lock. they tried to use a taser twice. he was resisting arrest for minutes. that almost is never included whether we are talking about justice in the situation. why not? and how do you reconcile that? >> well, justice is also due process. and so a defense is going to be mounted and that case is going to be made. but, you know, you still have people that still debate on whether george floyd should have died or not. some people have blamed it on the drugs that were in his system when we have autopsies that suggest otherwise. when we have a video.

and so, yes, i think it is adequate. it is correct to say officers deserve due process. they deserve to mount a defense and wet then others will push bk and say even when the evidence is so convincing. even though we have a video. you still have people that go on air and still say oh, well, it was the drugs in his system that killed him. will: you know i am surprised at that poll that jedediah referenced a moment ago about the way that public feels about sports embracing politics. i want to read you a statement from the nba players' association. this is parts of what they have hopes to accomplish. have agreed to accomplish in every city where the league franchise owns and controls the arena property, team governor also continue to work with the local election officials to convert for 2020 general election to allow for safe inperson voting option for communities. vulnerable to covid. i certainly respect the players' conviction. when politic politics is infuseh sports. i guess that's fine unless it's

only one side of the political message. i just wonder if this whole process of encouraging voting at certain nba facilities. and sports being infused with politics if there is not an underlying message of but vote our way? >> it may be. i think we should beat them on the battlefield of ideas and say well, this is our message as well. i think that's one of the problems that i have with the writinright now the message of liberty, due process that's our message. we should be saying this is where we stand. the fact that rand paul, i mean i'm a libertarian. people know that rand paul was attacked when he has been the guy that's been against the state's abuse of power is very concerning to me that people don't know that whether it's the fisa court, whether it's the criminal justice -- the guy is pro-legalization of all drugs. he has gone against the police state. if they wanted a champion for someone that's going to go out there and fight for their civil liberties, it would be rand

will: great to see you, lawrence. >> y'all take care. jedediah: we'll turn to headlines for you now one man is dead and three firefighters are hurt after a sidewalk collapses. florida officials say the seminole county worker was fixing a water main when giant pieces of concrete caved in trapping him underneath. the firefighters were shocked by an electrical wire as they tried saving him. they are hospitalized in stable condition. and c-span received so many calls in support of president trump. it had to change up its phone lines. the station initially categorized callers as democrats, republicans, or others on phone lines before the rnc. the station reportedly received an overwhelming amount of calls from people who identified as democrat saying they now support president trump after his speech. c-span had to change call labels to those who support trump, support biden and support others. well, there you go. and the trump administration is preparing to reduce the number of u.s. troops in iraq by about one third.
