first to the northwest, authorities say michael tried running when federal task force members moved in. police in lacy, washington say rino ran out of an apartment into a car when gunfire broke out between him and four officers. we are now learning he did have a gun when he was killed. vice news releasing an interview with the 48-year-old who appeared to admit to the deadly shooting of eric danielson last week in portland saying he acted in self-defense. >> totally justified. had i not acted on any that my friend and i'm sure i would have been killed. because i wasn't going to stand there and let something happy. todd: reinoehl shot and killed danielson who was attending a trump rally in portland. looking for someone who shot and killed an officer. the car the officer was in was shot at several times before that officer crashed. the 25-year veteran of the force later dying from their injuries. a second person was also killed, but police do not believe that

this law and order -- boy after his convention he really made inroads. he hasn't. not at all. i'm not serious -- this should give you a little bit of confidence. griff: biden gives a speech today on the economy. we expect him to say that the economic crisis was made worse by president trump and it comes just as the jobs report is about to come out. now, president trump is getting ready to head out on the campaign trail next week heading to north carolina and florida and in florida, by the way, in that sin quib pack poll it's tight biden leads by 3 with 60 days to go. steve, pete, jed? pete: griff, thank you very much. if you want to see the contrast it's on full display. donald trump in a hanger or when he went to kenosha meeting with law enforcement. meeting with the businesses there that have been impacted directly bi-radism not called out by joe biden and riots that democrat mayors and governors

have been unwilling to take on. you contrast that with joe biden wearing a mask also while socially distancing and effectively spent time talking to and if you watch tucker's program last night a very controversial father of jacob blake who has a history of a great deal of radicalism. it comes down to the radicalism coming from the left and rioting hariotingthat's happening and wd actually do something about it. that's the contrast and the message, steve. steve: one of the other things is, pete, during the meeting with community leaders, joe biden put his foot in his mouth because he joked if he didn't wrap up soon, the organizers would shoot me, he said, which is a very unfortunate choice of words given everything that had happened. when you look at the two approaches, joe biden, it was reported he was going to be in kenosha on monday. then at the last minute they pulled the plug on that particular event and then he wound up talking about kenosha in -- where was that? he was in pittsburgh instead.

finally he has gone to kenosha. the president went to kenosha before him. the president actually toured the parts of the city that were gutted by the violence, jed, and joe biden didn't even go to those parts of town. he did talk to one business owner who was impacted but, nonetheless, you know, you got the president going out and saying i can't believe all this happened. the national guard came in and stopped all that stuff, and i'm going to, you know, he opened up the federal checkbook to help all those people. joe biden for the most part avoided those images because, obviously, those images not helpful to the message that he is trying to sell right now. jedediah: yeah, clearly a big distinction as you both point out between the approach of joe biden and the approach of president trump on the significant issue. we have been talking about law and order for a long time. it clearly is front and center. now, what people decide in terms of who is better fit to lead, i can't answer that question. what i think is important to note though, is no one person

and no one politician is going to be able to fix this problem. and maybe the politician that has an awareness of that will achieve some success with people. you need the help of local law enforcement and when it comes to criminal justice reform, that starts at the community level. that starts in your churches, in your schools, at your dinner tables. those conversations become pivotal. so a politician is important in terms of leadership, but they are not going to be able to be the be all and end all in terms of fixing these issues. regardless though, i think you are both correct in that there is a very significant difference in terms of approach and priorities when it comes to this particular issue of law and order and how those politicians have displayed that ronna mcdaniel, rnc chair, has talked about that distinction and what policies joe biden is actually running on. take a listen. >> joe biden is running on policies that will make our country less safe. is he for revoking cash bail. he is saying if you convert a building and if you do this in kenosha, wisconsin you can get out of jail the next day a get out of jail free card. he selected a running mate who

said that ice is like the kkk. he selected the running mate who applauded the l.a. police department for cuttings 150 million from their police funds. everything that joe biden is running on is making our country less safe and the presidents is saying not only am i going to make america safe again i'm going to get america working again. i will make sure that we keep america america. jedediah: yeah. so what she is saying is significant. because, if you actually dig into the records and what has or hasn't been accomplished, it will lead you in one direction or another. the question is are people doing that or are they buying into the talking points? i mean, the fact that joe biden method with jacob blake's family will resonate with some people. they may not dig into the details of that story and that may not be important to them. i think it's going to be significant. is this going to be an election about records and results or about talking points in and that remains to be seen quite frankly. pete: yeah, if you are talking about supporting the police, it actually does matter hot leader

is police either feel empowered or they don't. it's clear with the police unions coming out many which never endorsed a republican before for the president, they know that's a one way street at this point. the cash bail thing if you are fighting catch and release like you could against insurgency or accurately you are refighting it over and over again. the break down is mobs in masks. ultimately it's not okay to wear mask if you are in a mob. also okay not to wear one if you are the speaker of the house. steve: only if you are getting a hair cut. pete: that's right. to be fair. the president weighed in on nancy pelosi not wearing a mask. listen to this. >> i watched nancy pelosi -- you must wear your mask. you have to wear your mask. and we're going to keep every beauty salon closed in california and all over the country. and then i see a picture, i say nancy pelosi, well, where is her mask? she said i was setting up.

[cheers] i. the salon owner to lead the house of representatives. as soon as i heard she said well, she set me up. nancy, you are not supposed to get set up. you are representing our country. she should have said i made a mistake. sorry. pete: but she didn't, steve. she said no, you should apologize to me. steve: and we just heard of the president say that the salon owner erika caus who provided that tape to the news media to show the hypocrisy the president said she should run for congress. do you know what she said in response she said i see how hard the president fights for america it has inspired me to people in my businesses and everywhere. i never expected all of this the house i am focused on right now is the house with two little

girls under 10 with social distanced learning. i appreciate the sentiment but he is my president. and i will do what i need to do. because she has received so many death threats, and so many bad yelp review us, keep in mind her business is not open for inside care, only -- you can only do it outside. and nancy pelosi knew that. come on. the republican chair of the nevada g.o.p. set up a go fund me page to help her relocate to a town where she won't wind up with those kind of death threats and right now i'm sure we will link or you can find it elsewhere the go fund me has raised so far $115,000 for her to get out of san francisco and go somewhere where she can start over because this has been a terrible chapter in her life. jed. jedediah: yeah. i mean, nancy pelosi, yeah, she should have just said i'm sorry. i made a mistake.

[screaming] now, it is not fair at this point if anyone was hurt. police are searching for the driver and asking for anyone with information to come forward. president trump denies a report claiming he called dead u.s. service members losers and suckers. >> to think that i would make statements negative to our military and our fallen heroes when nobody has done what i have done, they made it up. jillian: a report by the atlantic claims the president made the comments to aides after scrapping a cemetery visit to honor those deceased service members in 2018 paris. texas governor greg abbott is considering control to prevent it being defunded. abbott posted on twitter saying in part quote we can't let austin defunding and disrespect for law enforcement to endanger the public and invite chaos like portland and seattle. it follows austin city council's to cut $150 million from its po texas to do so.

>> there have you got new york city current mayor bill de blasio lashing out after president trump threatened to cut federal funds to force cities that the president has said have committed violence. here is attorney general matt whitaker. good morning to you. >> hey, good morning, steve. steve: the administration said something to the omb to try to figure out these so-called anarchist jurisdictions that are allowing lawlessness in the streets. and, in fact, you know, if you noticed the president's rhetoric the last couple of days he made it clear he is not talking about peaceful protesters. he's talking about places where there are domestic terrorists. >> yeah, and we need to remember that the federal government through department of justice grants gives a lot of money to state and local law enforcement and state and local governments to supplement their law enforcement and to make sure that they are protecting their people and in these four cities that the president identified, i think he is very concerned about

how that money is being deployed and he has asked for a review of that. it's very straightforward and very legitimate request to make sure that our taxpayer dollars are being used appropriately. steve: you know, i don't get it. when you think about it, the eye ron any is these cities would like to cut the funding to police and essentially that's what president trump would be doing as well. >> you are right. and i think it was a little concerning that mayor de blasio admitted that really the only way new york city survives is through federal government money. that is not supposed to be the way it works. they should be able to support themselves and have federal stacks pairs supplement as necessary their budget. but it shouldn't be dependent on it. the next thing bill de blasio is going to threaten to send a strongly worded letter to the president. steve: you are right. they did send a strongly worded letter for the democratic mayors. it said. this. instead of leadership from the

white house, we are faced with new attacks that are unlawful, unconstitutional and will undoubtedly be defeated in court. president trump needs to wake up to the reality facing our cities, he is not above the law. you know, i was hearing a legal analyst, although here i am talking to the former acting attorney general of the united states. he was on the radio talking about how the president does have the power. but it's got to be authorized by congress. and that ain't happening any time soon. >> well, and the thing that i know this is very similar to what we were doing while i was there on sanctuary cities. we have had some success in that regard. i think the federal government's case is stronger than the mayor of new york city wants to admit. steve: i'm sure you are sitting out in iowa right now. i'm sure you were watching a little bit ago where we were playing the vape of nancy pelosi where she was going through the salon with no mask on. the president, you know, he made hey with that yesterday. now there are two republican

house members gary palmer of alabama and mike johnson of louisiana, they have apparently written a letter to bill barr, the current attorney general asking did nancy pelosi violate federal law when at the state of the union in february she did this: she ripped her copy of the state of the union address in half. apparently the question is did she violate federal law, which carries a penalty between a fine or three years in prison? >> well, i think we can see that through what nancy pelosi does is she thinks the rules apply to everyone but herself, including both the federal archives act, the local ordinances in san francisco. and while i don't expect nancy pelosi to ultimately be prosecuted for violating federal law, i think that was a destruction of a federal document and she probably did technically violate the law that those congressman allege. steve: it wasn't a document.

pete: families of big ten players after the league postponed the season due to covid-19. our next guest organized a demonstration out the big ten headquarters. here with updated randy wade whose son sean wade is a star quarterback for the buckeyes. a couple weeks ago you led a protest in front of the big ten headquarters saying you don't have a plan. have you postponed this other conferences are open. what have you seen transpire in the last couple weeks?

do you have any hope we will see big ten football? >> i think -- rumors that the big ten president and chancellors will be voting today. wanted the chance to play football safely this fall. pete: so there was a vote previously that was mired in controversy because there wasn't much transparency about it. you are saying they are going to vote today. rumors it could be october. rumors it could be thanksgiving. my guess you want it as soon as possible, especially in light of the fact that some of the other big five conferences are playing. >> you know, we don't want to be handicapped. we want a chance for our kids not just ohio kids in the big ten to play for the championship. you know, to have a chance to play for the championship. we think that's a big deal. we don't know what happened and whether they voted or didn't vote in the past. you know, that's why we asked for transparency. but now we are hearing -- just

pray and can't wait to seat outcome. pete: nothing worse on the sidelines than when your competitors are out there competing. how is your son doing? how is he feeling about the ambiguity of this. >> he is at home right now. like i said, we are waiting for the results. hopefully can he fly back to ohio. he understands now because so much time has went by, you know, the decision they made and why they made it and stuff like that. but we just want an opportunity to -- kids have been fighting for this opportunity since they were young. he you can't change time. we would like to play the season. pete: compared to you and i they still are young. these are young, healthy kids who want to get -- not kids, men who want to get out there and play. ultimately couldn't they make the choice if you are not comfortable, you don't have to play. >> and they definitely have that choice. kids opting out every day, you know, weekly. so, the kids that don't want to play, they have a choice. but, you know, again some kids, young men that would like to play. and like i said, you can't

ashley strohmier joins us from churchill downsz with the big changes this year. ashley, you are alone right now. there are a few trainers, a few horses, a few riders, where are the people? >> they are at home and apparently that is where they are going to stay. the hash tag is ky derby at home. a little more fun. it's still going on that's is the good thing. i have changes my big hat this is fry frank hole also a hat made in brooklyn, new york thank you to for that. it will look a lot different as you said. there is not going to be any spectators in the stands. now they kind of wrangled that back. originally they were going to have fans that obviously much lower capacity but they came back and said you know what? just due to covid,it is not safe for the spectators. the race, the first race at least is at 11:00 a.m. today. as i said, they were going to have spectators. for now they will have to stay

so much to touch on with you today. we want to start with the derby. the derby without in person fans, what do you think? will: you know, jed, good morning by the way jed, pete, steve. i believe the watching experience is going to be better than you might expect. i have been a little bit surprised the way sports has been able to survive in this pandemic world. whether or not it's been basketball or any of the other sports, virtual fans pumping in crowd noise. as a television viewing experience the lack of fans has been the least of sports' problems. we will see how that works in a bigger venue meaning football and things like the derby. i'm talking just as a television viewing experience it's not been bad. can i say one more thing on the note of sports? i just saw your interview with randy wade, i just wanted to say this his son sean is phenomenal he will be a top five pick in the nfl draft. his career will be fine whether or not they play at ohio state this year or not. what i find fascinating about that interview, pete, is that

there is this idea that college sports is exploitative. that all these guys just want to get to the pros and they got to get off the awful college sports environment. these guys are trying their hardest to get back on the field. regardless whether or not they get played they want to play. i think this pandemic has revealed the value of college sports. pete: i think you are right. absolutely. you say sports will survive either way. the question is will george washington? because the mayor of washington, d.c. has talked about a review of monuments there in the city and it runs against the federal monuments but even the conversation should we cancel george washington? well, the president weighed in on it yesterday, will, listen. >> they want all of the name washington removed from everything. muddy the waters? >> no. it's part and parcel of what we have been observing for a number of years now in that sense i have never seen a president attacked as much as this one has been over a number of issues and many cases it is very inflammatory like this one is. i mean, i was very critical of the previous president on foreign policy and national security and i have been with president trump at times. though largely i agree with the direction he is moving in. but, that's quite different than what is being done here. pete: absolutely. general, on to another topic in the world health organization. the trump administration says they will now formally move forward with drawing. here is a tweet from secretary of state mike pompeo about it. the who failed to adopt urgently needed reforms starting with demonstrating its independence from the chinese communist party. we have made almost a billion dollars in investment in the who

times to witness some of their observations and their viewpoints. it is still healthy for the world organization to come together, most nations in the world are there and arm wrestle over what's going on in the world today. i think we stay in it. and we fight for what is right. pete: all right. one of the countries that often has a veto in the security council of the united nations is china. the pentagon came out with a report recently about their military capability, specifically their navy that i have got to get your comment on, general. here is part of what it has to say. china has the largest navy in the world with an overall battle force of approximately 350 ships and submarines. includes military comprehensive program that aids to transform it into a world class military by the end of 2024. general, with china spending a ton of money to modernize their military and us doing, you know, the president has spent more than his predecessors but still continuing resolutions, capitol hill can't get out of their way. do we face a future challenge

from a chinese military? >> we face a challenge right now with the chinese military if we had to confront them. and we will face one in the future. but, what's really happening here is they are the most rapid growing military in the world. they have the largest navy, army, coast guard and rocket and missile forces in the world. while they don't have the largest air force, they have the largest air force in that region of the world. and they want to have the number one military in the world. they want to dominate and control and influence the world the way the united states has been a global leader for years and replace the international order as we know it. and they are going to use economic and military peter to dspoirtd to do it. superiority to do it. we have more aircraft carriers than they have 11 to 2. more submarines state of the art than the chinese have many of theirs are still diesel.

, yeah, it was 674 days since joe biden was last in wisconsin. i think what we are very clearly seeing here this is a game we all learned in kindergarten follow the leader. joe biden only went to wisconsin because donald trump went there he remembered two weeks ago told us he could do the entire campaign from his basement then all of a sudden he is out on the campaign trail. interesting how that has worked out. the reason he didn't go to those areas because those are joe biden supporters that absolutely disseminated parts of a great american city and he doesn't want to be standing in front of the destruction joe biden supporters caused. the president went to kenosha where they allowed him to bring in the national guard. to bring in federal support and quell the violence overnight things are back to normal and very peaceful there now. joe biden it took three months to condemn any of the violence and any of the terrible things we have seen in the streets of america in these democrat-run cities. but he doesn't want to stand in front of that we all know that.

jedediah: lara, another topic that we want to get to that's been controversial is mail-in voting. you know have pennsylvania democrats coming out and saying they are very worried about it. we have a quote from the philadelphia city commissioner lisa daily. this is quote to politico. it reads even with all of that equipment with 400,000 ballots that we expect to receive, it's physically impossible that they will all be opened and scanned before the polls close on election day. the new reality is winners and losers are not going to be known at the end of the night. of course they are trying to avoid what happened in the june primary where it took about two weeks to count all of those votes. so what do you think of all of this? and what do you think of that statement? >> well, i think people are right to be absolutely terrified of this universal vote by mail situation. the reality is absentee voting has always worked. you have to request a ballot. you have to sign your name. you have to certify that you are actually the person, indeed, that has filled out that ballot. what the democrats proposed about 90 days before a

presidential congressional senate election is to just mail out into the universe millions and millions of ballots. you have no idea who received these things. we have seen instances where there are cats that have been dead for 12 years receiving ballots in the mail. we have seen how it hasn't worked where it's already been tried in certain areas around the country, new jersey, new york, it doesn't work and what you have right now is the democrats are setting us up so that when donald trump wins on november 3rd, they can quickly say oh, wait, what about all of these mail-in ballots that we have here? let's not forget to count these. it is right for voter fraud. no one knows who has voted vote multiple times vote by mail and go into a voting location and vote as well. donald trump has been calling this out from day one. this is not the way it should function in the united states of america. but democrats know the only way that their chosen candidate, joe biden can win is to cheat. so that is why we see this happening right now and that's why people should be very, very

worried and i'm glad to see a lot of push back on this. steve: lara, speaking of, you know, voting by mail and things like that. the other day when you were in, i believe, north carolina with your father-in-law, it sounded like he was telling people to vote twice. he said you know, go ahead and vote by mail and then on election day go in and see if your vote counted and if it didn't you should try to -- you is you had vote. that's your right. we know you cannot vote twice in the same election. that is voter fraud. he has since been trying to clarify that you were there. what was he saying? >> yeah. well, of course he wasn't suggesting that people vote twice. there is only one party that's been kind of suggesting that or actually doing things like that it's not the republican party. what he is saying you should make sure if you mail in a ballot whether it's absentee or otherwise that it is actually counted. this is exactly the problem i just outlined. there is no way really to trace a lot of these ballots and as

americans we all get one vote we should know that vote counted. he is saying follow through. make sure your vote was counted and if, in fact, it was not. make sure they count it whether they say here's the personal i voted for and make sure i'm marked down or did you go in and you do it again because they somehow lost your ballot. we all should be assured as americans that our vogt is counted and that it's for the candidate of our choice. that we voted for. that was all he was saying. i think we all know that. pete: that's the scary part about mail-out ballots you don't know the chain of custody and i know multiple people who have received multiple different ballots already of people that don't live there anymore under multiple names for them. steve: you are trusting the post office. pete: trusting the post office which has endorsed joe biden. lara, you are featured in a new documentary called the trump i know. you would know the president. talk to us about this. >> yeah, well, look, you are guys know there is 92% negative media coverage of this president. the media loves to cover trump

were the president to get a second term, what's the stance on future of nato, is it worth american involvement altogether? secretary: i've been involved in nearly all of the discussions about nato and u.s.' role, the president said, look, you can't free ride. you have a responsibility to participate, frankly, to honor the promise that is the european countries all made that they've spend at least 2% of their gdp on their own security and he's demanded. the good news is he's been successful. i think general secretary leader of nato said there's $400 billion more that will be invested into nato. it's a direct result of president trump's leadership. nato is stronger under president trump than it has been in previous administrations. i'm proud of the work we've done there. i'm proud of the work we've done the threat that emanate that nato has responsibility for and i'm confident that the president trump team will continue to

strengthen for the american people. steve: mr. secretary, before you were secretary of state you were congressman from the great state of kansas. you know how elections work and you know exactly how everybody who is up for reelection feels right now. do you share the president's worries about mail-in voting because when you were running, you know, out of wichita, kansas, i'm sure there were a number of people in far-flung parts of the state who were voting in that particular election, probably did absentee or mail-in voting, did you have problems back then? secretary: i think i voted absentee a couple of times, steve. the big worry, it's just a matter of logic. it's a little bit out of my lane as secretary of state. it's a matter of logic and the states changed the rule. and in this election we expect enormous turnout and just mail ballots to people who are on mailing list on voting roles, there's real risk and the american people deserve to have

steve and, pete, one of the headlines is unemployment is under 10% which is good news. the unemployment rate right now at 8.4% last month. that is down since july's unemployment rate and more than 10%, to put it into perspective, in february, when the nation had the lowest unemployment in 50 years, the rate then was 3.5%, so we are still about 5% north of that, but nonetheless, with them hiring 1.4 million people, the hiring continues, but, you know, we are slowly crawling out of this hole from the pandemic because there's so many industries where the hiring has not resumed like in travel and leisure and hospitality and the airlines and retail. that's going to take a little while longer. it is a good sign. jededia: positive trend and one that you will continue more as businesses reopen. new york city alone, i was getting text messages from
