in washington as both campaigns hit the trail in swing states. douging good morning. >> reporter: if you want to figure out what states may determine the outcome of the november election, look at the travel itinerary over the next couple days for both campaigns. pennsylvania, wisconsin, north carolina, president trump is about to make his second trip to north carolina tomorrow in the course of about a week. no doubt touting what he see as an economic recovery, especially after last week's jobs report showed a big drop in the unemployment rate and that's something mike pence no doubt, the vice president is going to talk about today as he travels to a state that played such an important role back in 2016 and that's wisconsin. >> it's going to be a very clear choice in november. president trump who has already built the world's best economy once and is doing it a second time and joe biden, who would raise taxes by $4 trillion in the middle of this recovery and kill the recovery while it's still going on and on top of that, heap the regulations of

jillian: protests breaking out in two major cities overnight after a violent weekend of riots leading to a record number of arrests. todd: jackie aba abania joins s live. >> reporter: protesters hitting the streets of rochester, new york for a fifth straight night following the death of daniel prude. >> we have some elected officials marching with us. this ain't no photo op. we want to ask joe morelli, with all the money you've taken from the police, what do you plan on doing with that money? jillian: that didn't go quite as planned. this comes after rochester's mayor promises to enact police reform. the city planning to double its availability of mental health professionals and shifting the family crisis intervention team out of the police department. protests in the city turning violent this weekend in rochester, nine people were arrested. the mayor slamming outside

agitators for the h the destruc. >> there are agitators within the crowd, whether from here or of elsewhere, who do want to provoke and want the kind of confrontation. >> reporter: in portland, oregon, a record 59 people were arrested during the weekend riots there, authorities say rioters threw molotov cocktails at police, setting one of their own on fire. portland's mayor, ted wheeler, condemning the violence, saying in part, quote, we need to end the long, hard summer and come together. the community needs to say enough is enough and hold those who engage in criminal acts accountable. joe biden campaign claiming president trump has not been clear enough about riots in the country. >> it doesn't matter what political party you belong to, doesn't matter what your political beliefs are, violence is wrong. joe biden has been very clear. i believe it's president trump that has not.

>> reporter: president trump has repeatedly tweeted calling for law and order. labor leaders calling for a walkout before the election, threatening to walk out unless police reform happens. jillian: thank you. todd: a deadly labor day weekend in chicago, despite increased police presence. five people have been killed, 31 wounded including a 4-year-old boy. on sunday, a 32-year-old mother was stabbed to death while working at wall greens. ahead of the holiday weekend, chicago police canceling days off and extending shifts to put more cops on the street. jillian: a former fbi agent who played a role in the russia investigation defending mistakes made in fisa applications. >> i don't think at all that it's anything improper. you get people who are overworked, who make mistakes and don't get me wrong, inexcusable mistakes. jillian: peter strzok oversaw the early days of the russia investigation. in total, 17 significant errors

were reported in the application for fisa warrants. todd: a desperate search underway right now for a sailor who has disappeared from the uss nimitz in the middle east. jillian: trey yingst is live in jerusalem with the latest. trey. >> reporter: good morning. the search continues today for a missing u.s. sailor in the arabian sea. this u.s. service member is normally stationed aboard the uss nimitz, a vessel that is based out of washington. the sailor's name and rank are currently being withheld. this is still considered a search and rescue operation. the service member is listed now as duty status whereabouts unknown. the uss nim mists is a super -- nimitz is a super carrier. it can hold more than 80 aircraft. last summer a sailor went missing in a similar area from the uss abraham lincoln and was ultimately declared dead after no body was recovered. the pentagon is expected to update members of the media today on the search and rescue

(calm inspirational music) jillian: welcome back. a blast from the past, joe biden adds a bunch of new hires to prepare for a transition team if he wins november. todd: the names include several former obama administration officials. joining us live with his reaction, is president of the committee to defend the president, ted harvey. ted, thanks for waking up with us here on labor day.

let's look at some of the names on the potential transition team, they include former national security advisor, susan rice, former deputy attorney general, sally yates, jeff zitze, bob mcdonald, the va secretary during the obama administration, new mexico governor michelle grisham and pete buttigieg, planning on being on the transition team. is this an indication that a biden presidency would be a carbon copy of the obama presidency? >> well, you look at all the names that you just read off and it should be pretty scary to the americans ayou cross the country to -- across the country to see the biden transition team is made up of the people who pretty much failed our country for the eight years of the obama administration, whether it was susan rice lying to the american people about the benghazi attack, whether it was the va

director that literally allowed va vets to be dying on the waiting list trying to get help for their suicidal concerns. across the board, all of these individuals that they're bringing on are the failed retreads of the who's who of the obama administration and that's why trump was elected in 2016. we don't need to bring it back in 2020. jillian: let me ask you this, though. how does the idea of some of those potential names being involved if he were to win in november, how does that mesh with what appears to be a very different democratic party all these years later where you have socialism as a forefront here in the conversation? >> well, you didn't mention that elizabeth warren is also on that transition team. and she's bringing forward all of her socialized medicine and all of the things that go along with all of the socialist policies that she's been promoting all of these years. yes, the democrat party has been

taken over by the radical left and you just look at what's happening on the streets of democrat cities across the state. across the country. that should give you pause about electing a joe biden in november. todd: you mentioned socialism. bernie sanders warning that president trump may not concede the election if he loses. here's what sanders says, quote, we also must consider what happens if trump loses but refuses to abide by the results and does everything he can to hold onto power, what we have got to do in the next two months is alert the american people about what that nightmarish scenario might look like in order to prepare them for that possibility and talk about what happens, what we do if that happens. you how worried should americans be about bernie's warning, ted? >> well, i think if you listen to hillary clinton over the last week, she's been telling joe biden not to concede. i think the democrats -- donald

which is the main reason i left the military. everybody wants more for their kids, but i feel like with my kids, they measurably get more than i ever got. and i get to do that. i get to provide that for them. todd: we are back with this fox news alert. a state of emergency declared in parts of california as dangerous wildfires burn across that state. one of the largest is the creek fire which has burned more than 73,000 acres. more than 200 people air-lifted to safety after being trapped by flames over the weekend. jillian: it comes in the midst of an hi historic and deadly het wave. several trails shut down after a hiker died from a heat related seizure. meteorologist adam klotz joins us live as one county reports a scorching 121 degrees. what's the latest there?

>> good morning, guys. that heat you're talking about, that is going to linger into this labor day. we're seeing warm temperatures early this morning. here you are looking across the country, middle of the country sitting in the 70s. out west, that's where the heat has been extreme, 91 degrees early this morning in phoenix. it's going to be hot throughout the day. we've got our heat warnings, watches continuing to be in place up and down the entire state of california and stretching off to the east and across the desert southwest, arizona, nevada, new mexico, the heat is going to stay extreme here on this labor day monday. here's your temperatures. you see widespread numbers at 110 degrees or higher, close to it in phoenix, taking you up the state of california, 111 degrees, you see it multiple times. run that into colorado. i want to show you this, 94 degrees in denver today. take a look at what we're going to see for tomorrow. temperatures familiar down to 38

parties ge getting out of contr. the trump campaign slamming the atlantic magazine after their report that the president called fallen soldiers losers and suckers. >> it's clear that journalistic integrity is has to be in question after you have four anonymous source that's are trying to hide their identities instead of standing up to level such disgusting accu accusation. todd: the editor in chief defending the piece, saying he expects more reports to come out. >> across the national security complex, people who have devoted their careers to protecting the united states, there is a sense of horror about the way he acts and behaves and talks. todd: president trump has denied making the remarks but fox news' jennifer griffin reports that her sources inside the administration confirmed to her that the president made some of those remarks. jillian: prince harry and meghan markle are facing

criticism for canceling an invic tuss games fundraiser. according to the sunday times it was canceled days before signing a deal for netflix. the event was set to be aired by amazon, a competitor of netflix. a spokesperson for the event said it was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. the games foundation was founded by the prince. todd: check out this. california forest service dog surviving a stabbing for the second time in four years. ice was recently stabbed nine times in a raid on an illegal marijuana on of presentation, he was stabbed -- operation. he was stabbed four times in a similar since dent in 2016. he was previously honored as a top dog award winner by american humane hero dogs. my money says he's going to be recognized again. jillian: oh, goodness many goo.

my wife is basically apolitical. she doesn't follow stuff that much. she's too busy working. when she passes along an article. i ask where did you get that? a friend of mine shared it on facebook. nearly a million people watched the trump acceptance speech at the rnc, while 500,000 watched the democratic nominee and joe biden. so yeah, i mean, obviously we're on tv right now, ratings for fox news, for instance, are at an all-time high. we're talking about a 24 year history here. overall, a lot of people are watching things quickly on their phones, on the go, wherever they want to. however they want to. and that's a key thing right now to reach people online because more and more people are getting their news online, jillian. jillian: we can't escape it. i don't know about you. sometimes i find myself if i'm in a moment, scrolling any social media platform, a video pops up, it sort of just plays.

you don't have to click on things anymore to choose to watch it. if you take a look at this, the august content comparison of president trump's campaign, 900 plus videos were posted. you can see joe biden's campaign there, 100 plus many that's a big different. you think the trump campaign is onto something by doing this? >> that looks a lot like the number of questions that the trump campaign takes as opposed to joe biden, seems like less is more with the democratic nominee. look, the bottom line is that when we look at overall the ground game between the trump campaign and the biden campaign, it's night and day and it wasn't always like this. the democrats owned online campaign spending, campaign outreach in 2012. i mean, the obama campaign ran circles around mitt romney. now it seems that the trump campaign understands probably through the president in terms of the fact that he has 86 million followers on twitter that that's the way you get to people. to your point, a lot of people

will be just looking at their phones and a video pops up, plays for like 15, 20 seconds, it's fast food advertising per se and they get their message out that way, so yeah, it seems that more and more that the trump campaign is doing more interviews, taking more questions. kayleigh mcenany does a press conference every day, the president does a press conference every day and the biden campaign has done three press conferences in 150 of days where the questions haven't been challenging. at least as far as communication, trump a big advantage over biden right now. jillian: let's talk about this for a second because we'll show this video here, then explain what's going on. these are protesters attacking diners and destroying a restaurant, this is in rochester. this comes on the heels of the death of 29-year-old daniel prude who suffocated while in police custody. all seven officers involved were suspended. we're seeing this play out in cities all across the country and you've heard many people say -- you've heard the president and vice president saying that, look, protesting is one thing

but being violent and the riots and destruction of property, businesses, people livelihoods, that is a completely different conversation. joe, is this the way to get a message heard? >> i remember the iraq war, i'm old enough to remember the iraq war that began 2003 and we heard about how american forces are to win the hearts and minds of iraqi people. iraqi people didn't like being occupied. in this case, the black lives matter movement to win hearts and minds, to just scream at people and try to coerce them into, say, raising their fist or to agree with them, particularly on a holiday weekend where we've had a horrible year and people want to get out once in a while does the opposite of that and, look, black lives matter polling used to be pretty high in june after the murder of george floyd. but now we've seen drops of 20, 25% support. so right now black lives matter, they're allowing themselves to be defined and the fact that they don't have a central voice, in other words, like a true

leader that goes out there, like the president of black lives matter to talk about here's what we want and this is what we're talking about, this is what defines the message. people see videos like this and they see one candidate in donald trump in terms of condemning this and having a plan to back it up in terms of sending federal pourses into certain cities -- forces into certain cities while things get out of control. joe biden says i condemn the violence after not mentioning it you once during the convention speech, saying i condemn the violence, i'm against this. that's like being against cancer. everybody is against it. the question is, what will you do about it. i haven't heard a concrete plan from joe biden at all and right now that's affecting him in terms of his polling and right now we have a dead heat in the battleground states if you look at the real clear politics index of polls and that's one reason why, law and order is a top two issue in this election. jillian: i think they know they missed the mark by not talking about it at all in the democratic convention.

florida congressman matt gates rolled out a green deal earlier this year in response to the green new deal. he said republicans care about the environment, they're just realistic about paying for it. >> in response to alexandria ocasio-cortez's green new deal, i filed a green real deal which means using the vision that a builder like president trump would have to actually improve the environment that people enjoy. it will be next week in florida that president trump will travel to our state and really survey all of the progress that's been made in the everglades. you look at the midwest and the real revitalization we've seen with the great lakes, that's a consequence of business approach to making our environment better so that all americans can enjoy our natural splendor. we cannot put america first if we allow america to be filthy. president trump understands that and his environmental policies haven't been pie in the sky, they haven't been government

jillian: schools across the nation are struggling with a teacher shortage as they try to keep students safe from the coronavirus. todd: christina reports from new york. >> reporter: the school year is off to a rough start, whether it's health and safety concerns or child care issues, many states are seeing teachers take leaves of absence or opt to retire. new york state alone has seen a 20% jump in retirements this summer compared to last year. pinellas county in florida has seen an 11% increase. while one new jersey town was forced to go all remote after 250 teachers requested a leave of absence. the superintendent of that school district in new jersey made it clear he's worried about the shortage. >> with these requests, opening remotely isn't from a lack of planning, it's from a lack of staffing and many of the

african-americans we point clearly to the 1994 crime bill what which was sponsored by joe biden. which gave $9.7 billion to building private prisons in our country that provide grant incentivized states to create truth in sentencing laws including the three strike law. once you look at it from a very methodical approach you see that legislation was intentional it created a fair amount of injustifiable for african-americans who are were judged based on some of the actions that they took and the other folks of the different race took some of the same actions and the punishment was wasn't the same. joe biden is a part of the problem. therefore, i don't understand how anyone could be thinking he could fix the injustices when he was the one that created them. todd: okay, gianno, to her point, harris is focused on trump and a.g. barr saying they are disconnected from reality when this comes to systemic

racism focusing just on that comment with trump and barr, do you agree with kamala harris. >> no, i don't agree. think about the first step act. this was a correction or a part correction of the injustice of the '94 crime bill. i understand what you're saying. i get it completed. but there has been a recognition by the trump administration and president trump himself has said that african-americans have faced huge injustices in this country. we can run the tape over and over again. he has admitted that. it's not like someone saying it doesn't exist. i know systemic racism does exist. i know some would disagree with me on that point. look who was a collaborator to the system of justice which we have in this country and recognizing the fact that president trump has putt in a fair amount of effort to try to correct what's been is systematic. todd: understood. jillian: talk about this now. the biden campaign stepping up critical states come november.
