that are members of a local union here. we know that we are about 50 minutes away from kenosha where we stand. senator harris did speak on the phone this afternoon with jacob blake during a private meeting with the blake family and some members of her son's legal team at the milwaukee airport. here's what she said about that just within the last six or seven minutes. she said it was wonderful. they're an incredible family. they have endured and they do such things very many things. and she expressed concerned for their well-being and for their brother and son. now today's meeting with the blake family was her first in-person event since being named to the biden ticket august 11. blake remains in the hospital after being shot in the back by a kenosha police officer. in the last week, he's spoken to joe biden and kamala harris and a judge as he is facing assault charges.

protests and violence over the weekend. in portland, police declaring a riot there. dozens arrested. more than 100 nights of protests in that city after the police shooting death of george floyd in minneapolis. in rochester new york, protests continue after a black man died. police say protesters smashed windows at city hall there. and on a delayed kentucky derby day, hundreds demanding justice for brianna taylor why black lives matters protesters chanted "u.s.a." laura ingle has the latest on shootings in the united states. laura? >> hi, jon. it's been a deadly and dangerous summer on the streets of new york, with brands new statistics that show us just how bad it has been over the last several months. a horrific scene playing out in brooklyn last night as five

people including a 6-year-old little boy were shot during a celebration. the child's mother was also shot along with three men, all five transported to the hospital with injuries. not considered to be life threatening. good news there, the nypd's chief of police said two men were arrested and two guns recovered. the nypd announced there was a 160% increase in the number of shooting incidents across the city for the month of august. that is in addition to murders being up 47% for the month of august as well. the grim numbers being released as violence and protests have played out in rochester, new york, the third largest city. protesters clashed with law enforcement demanding justice for daniel prude who died in march. officers using tear gus and rubber bullets to disbush crowds saturday as they pushed protesters back. the range of reaction coming after police body cam video of

daniel prude seen handcuffed naked in the streets with a spit hood over his help to help restrain what his family last called a mental health crisis. prude had pcp in his season and hits death was ruled a homicide. seven officers have been suspended with pay but not charged. today some protesters making their demands of dealing with mental health more visual by sitting naked restrained and hooded in front of the city's public safety buildings to make their point. the new york attorney general has announced over the weekend that she's empanelled a grand jury to listen to the prude situation. jon? >> laura ingle reporting live. thanks. want to bring into the conversation, ted williams, attorney and fox news contributor. the numbers that laura cited just from new york city are pretty frightening, ted. new york city was the safest big city in the nation. now shootings up 166% in august.

homicides up 47%. you know, the bird's eye view. what is going on? >> jon, sadly it seems as though we're in a war zone right here in the united states. i think it feels that way to a lot of the citizens out here. what is going on in these major metropolitan cities, specifically like new york, is that the morale on the police department is low. they're trying to work as best they can with the citizens, but i can tell you, the top officials in the new york police department is clearly not helping these guys. they have disbanded one of their very important and significant units there. so there's a lot of problems going on, jon. >> well, and you've got these conflicts. you've got black lives matter supporters protesting in various cities around the country and now you've got counter protesters coming in.

those clashes are turning violent. >> absolutely right. let's just look at portland, oregon. on one side you have antifa and black lives matter. the other side you've got the patriot prayer group. we've seen, as you know, several shootings that have taken place. the major, the state officials there, they just don't seem to have control of that city and they're not doing anything to get control of the city. >> the breonna taylor shooting has created so much controversy in louisville and across the country. when you take a look at that case, do you see charges coming against the officers involved? >> jon, the breonna taylor case is a very sad case. do i see charges coming? no, i do not. if the officers are unfortunately charged in that

case, i think they will in fact exonerate him. the rationale behind that is the officers went in with a lawful warrant to make an arrest in the home of mrs. taylor. while just as they were entering, the boyfriend of mrs. taylor spied on the officers. the officers had a right to fire back unfortunately and unfortunately mrs. taylor was killed. >> that's something that doesn't get a lot of public attention, the fact that the police who were serving that warrant or, you know, searching the apartment, whether it was justified or not, that they were fired on. >> yeah. you're right. it doesn't get enough attention. i know that the public is hammering for something to happen in that case, an arrest. it's highly unlikely that it's going to happen. john, i can tell you, a place that i'd like to mention is rochester, new york.

that kid is president right now. if you ask people who will do better in the debates, doesn't sprite me that people say the one that doesn't have to tell the truth. but look, as they say, that's why they play the games. so we look forward to it. >> as you well know, the elections are won in the middle. democrats generally vote for the democratic candidate and republicans vote for the republican candidate. it's the independents that decide who the next president will be. among independents, the gap is actually even greater. there's a 10-point spread among independents that say that they think president trump will win the debates. >> well, with that says to me is that those independents are looking forward to watching the debate. i'm looking forward to that. vice president biden is in the lead and taking this very seriously. takes the election seriously like everything else and we're going to work very hard for every vote. so you know, we are not going to worry about this sort of thing.

if president trump wants to tell everybody that he's won the debates, more power to him. >> so when it comes to, you know, preparation for joe biden, the president has, you know, he's new nickname is sleepy joe for the former vice president. do you expect joe biden will come out swinging on fire to try to, you know, put to rest some of the name calling from the president? >> i expect vice president biden will do what he's done the last several months and his career, focusing not on himself, not on defending himself from ridiculous accusations so much as focused on what the american people are going through. president trump spent a press conference talking about how unfair everything is to him. you don't see vice president biden doing that. vice president biden is not thinking about wins and losses and races and all of the stuff that is affecting him personally.

he's thinking about what can he do for the person people right now and what can he do for the american people as president. that's who i want as president. i want somebody thinking more about me and my family and my neighbors than about how they're treated. >> the president has been hitting joe biden pretty hard on his connections with china and his attitude toward china. the former vice president has said, you know, that china is not a threat. is that still the way that he feels? >> vice president biden has actually stood up for america in numerous ways when it comes to china and every other country. i understand why president trump would lie and take this approach. people are very troubled by the fact that there's nations like russia that seem to have a great deal of influence over president trump. you have to try to create the fiction of counter weight to that. i see it a little differently. i see it as two categories of nations here. it's a big problem for our

>> jon: a lot of colleges and universities have begun sending students home because of covid outbreaks. here's the front page of the "wall street journal." "colleges send students home as outbreaks worsen. are they creating a new coronavirus threat?" dr. kerry joins us, fox news contributor and professor at johns hopkins university. it would seem the prudent thing would be to send students home. you don't necessarily agree with that in all cases. why? >> happy labor day. it makes no sense from scientific stand point of taking somebody that is infected and put them in an uber car, ground transportation, have them go to an airport, board a plane and fly home where they could be around people who are more vulnerable. people in their mid 40s, 50s or 60s. so from a public health stand point, this is a bad idea. i understand the disciplinary

action of colleges, but they have to remember the concept of cohorting and putting students in pods to contain the infection once there's an outbreak. >> is there a way if there is an outbreak on a college campus? is there a way to keep kids locally and not send them home? >> well, certainly in terms of feasibility. needs to be some way to keep them isolated, be it in a room where they don't have a roommate or have them stay in a hotel or something. remember, this is for a two-week period on average. there's got to be some effort. colleges and schools quite frankly, great schools and high schools have gone through a tremendous amount of efforts to try to have a lot of safety precautions. those have been very admirable. everything falls apart with the parties. with the off campus settings. most students are taking things seriously. a few people that may not are

putting everybody at risk. >> i want the talk to you about the vaccine that is, well, tantalizingly out there as a possibility yet this year. there was a poll on cbs that said americans are distrustful of any vaccine that comes out this year. they think it's been rushed and think it's coming out for political reasons. can you asage those fears at all? >> i don't know why having hope in a vaccine and our scientific community is politicized. many of the vaccine companies, as a matter of fact, the top five vaccine manufacturers right now are very frustrated. they're increasingly bothered by the political rhetoric that somehow the phase 3 clinical trial process is getting

trump is absolutely right. she is -- according to gov track, she's the most liberal senator and more than bernie sanders and the least to spark bipartisan legislation. she's neither moderate or progmatic. people don't vote generally for the vice president. they vote nor the candidate who is running for president. and their strategy -- if the strategy is to paint her to the left of joe biden, that underscores what biden wants, which is to be portrayed as moderate and reasonable. and what they need to be doing is going with the strategy that they had been is to say that joe biden is a trojan horse for the left. they want voters to look at the moderate bipartisan exterior and say it's safe to let him in the white house gates and open up the trojan house and out comes an army of socialists led by bernie sanders and warren and the rest of them that will propose a progressive agenda on america.

>> jon: doug, from the democratic perspective, what do you think of the idea of labelling kamala harris as a radical california democrat? >> i must tell you, i agree with marc thiessen partially. i don't think that her posture as attorney general of california was that of a radical democrat. certainly is liberal but she's in the mainstream of the democratic party. she's not an aoc or bernie sanders supporter. so i think it's the wrong way to go if i was a trump campaign and quite frankly, at this point the trump campaign lacks a strategy, lacks focus and they're flailing away with the taxes. so far given the polling that shows biden leads seven or eight points. >> jon: so tom, you know, if she can be tagged with this label and there's a lot of people that sort of, you know, people in the middle of the country that laugh

at california and have all kinds of names for the place, if she can be tagged as a california liberal, why did she get picked for the vice presidential slot? >> well, she got picked because she was the best of the least worst options, right? every candidate that joe biden was considering had flaws. she seemed to be sort of the safest choice. that's what the biden campaign was looking for. i'll dissent from mark and doug and say what marc said to me is not mutually exclusive. if the trump's campaign argument is that biden is a mentally diminished figure and he's a puppet and that's all he's going to be, he's going to be driven by the radical elements of the party and also because kamala harris, there's concerned about biden's health that kamala harris is getting more scrutiny than the presidential candidate might get, painting her as a

radical and the record supports that she's a liberal center, as doug said, she may still be in the mainstream but that party has moved further to the left in recent years and continues to go to the left. doesn't strike me it's all that bad of a strategy and sort of goes hand and hand with both of their arguments, that you know, he's a vessel for the radical left and again, that he's also sort of mentally diminished and won't be the guy who is running things. now, whether that argument sells with the public or not, we'll see. >> jon: there is an article or a headline i should say in politco that caught our eye having to do with suburban voters. why biden could still lose the suburbs to trump. tom? your at politco. take that one on. why? >> well, i'm actually not with politco. i'm with real clear politics. setting that aside -- that's

okay. >> my apologies. my apologies. >> just want to be clear about that. no, listen, look, the suburbs is where this will be won or lost. trump is trying to make up ground there with law and order. there's some indication that this is rising to the top of concerns of suburban voters, particularly women. the question is whether he has the right messaging. is the message law and order, hammering that or is it a more nuanced message about public safety. trump uses the blunt edge instrument as opposed to a nuanced messaging that might way the suburban voters that look around and say safety is a bigger and bigger concern. i'm not sure that trump has the messaging right. >> all right marc, quickly. the suburbs versus the president and the ex-vice president. >> i agree with tom.

i think what is happening is that when this was all contained in new york and chicago and portland and minneapolis, it wasn't really affecting the suburbs because people are used to seeing violence. it's when it moved to kenosha, moved to rochester a small city, suburban-type city, all of a sudden people say this is getting closer and closer to my neighborhood. and there's a poll showed that 46% of americans are worried it's coming to their neighborhood. it's a powerful message for trump. >> i tend to think that moving on the economy and running on the possibility of getting a vaccine is going to be more useful than just blunt edges as tom put it running on law and order. the suburbs want to hear about progress for our country, not extreme rhetoric and so far the trump campaign has not succeeded. >> he needs both. >> he may well.

developing the ability to project power all around the world. now it says, hey, the united states can do that. we should do that, too. you see it that way? >> i don't, jon. because, you know, the united states defends the current international system. china is trying to overthrow it. we try to keep the global commons open and china is trying to dismember neighbors from india to japan. they're disrupting peace and stability in the region. they have very different op objectives than we do. >> and in china, they have this world view that suggests that they believe they're the only legitimate world power. is that right? >> yeah, xi jinping has been talking about this notion that china has a mandate of having to rule the world. they not only have the right to do it but they have the

obligation to do it. they're very specific about this in public and so have his officials, which means that they are trying to change the international system, not to compete within it. >> jon: but the title of your book is "the coming collapse of china." how can that be if they are building up their military to such level? >> yeah, in 2001 i thought it would take ten years for the communist party to fall. i'm obviously wrong. the 2008 global downturn intervened. what we're seeing right now, jon is a very worrying mentality in china. i think they're starting to see a closing window of opportunity because of the problems in the economy, in the environment, demography. you name it. i think china believes that they need to move fast and that means we're going to see problems not in the 2030s, but problems now. >> jon: many chinese military leaders, you say, are ready for war. >> yeah, they're obviously got a

blood lust. we saw this on the night of june 15. in a premeditated move, they killed 20 indian soldiers. an indian soldier died last week. you know, we see very belligerent moves around china's periphery. so clearly china's general officers, their admirals and generals, they want to use their new weapons and believe that they have a right to do that. >> jon: when the president talked about decoupling from china, good idea? >> absolutely a good idea. you know, china is configuring their military to kill americans. we shouldn't be enriching a hostile regime with our trade and investment. i believe that decoupling is what we absolutely have to do especially this year. we saw china try to threaten to cut off pharmaceuticals and medical protective gear if the united states if we didn't behave. >> jon: gordon chang. thank you. >> thanks, jon. >> jon: record-breaking heat

>> jon: wildfires in california have earned a record 2 million acres in 2020, the most dangerous part of the years ahead according to the california department of forestry. record-breaking heat fueling fires of the state over the past few days. in the north crews airlifted more than 200 people to safety after flames surrounded them. a gender reveal party sparked another fire over the weekend. governor gavin newsom declaring a statewide emergency. christina coleman live in los angeles with more. >> hi. a camping trip turned dangerous for some campers in northern california. they were enjoying the holiday weekend and then they are

trapped by a fast-moving wildfire. the california national guard stepped in to help, airlifting 207 people to safety. >> the crews were ecstatic when they came off the helicopters. all the individuals they rescued were greeting the crewmembers with hogs as they were boarding the helicopter. again after getting off the helicopter, a lot of high fives. >> military helicopters were used to rescue those campers saturday and into sunday morning. at least 20 people were hospitalized. a few were critically injured and some apparently were burned. others had broken bones. the creek fire has burned more than 78,000 acres in two days and it is 0% contained. and, for only a road into the mammoth campground. the people were trapped. the cause of this fire is unknown. we do know what caused the el dorado fire. it was sparked by a pyrotechnic device during a gender avail
