ultimate driver of the electoral decision for most americans is going to be who can create prosperity for me, my family and the country going forward. >> reporter: and the biden campaign hitting back on this narrative from the trump campaign that the former vice president is not out on the trail and he's in his basement. listen. >> vice president biden was out campaigning this week as you know. folks saw him not campaigning but really taking a solemn moment, marking the 9/11 this past friday and vice president biden will be out next week, he's going to florida. we'll be in minnesota. >> reporter: the economy also very popular for president trump. that has been his signature issue since before he became in office, when he campaigned an announced the campaign in june 2015, 1.4 million jobs added in august, laura. also the unemployment rate down now under 10% at 8.4%.
9:20 am
that's what the president's going to continue to focus on. laura. laura: we'll see how these next few weeks go. david spunt in washington, thank you very much. eric. eric: well, laura, the shocking daylight ambush of two deputies as they sat in their patrol car is t war on the nation's police officers. from new york city to rochester to kenosha and minneapolis, police have been under siege in our country and president trump has seized on the outrage over this as a campaign issue. here he is last night in nevada, referring to a previous attack, a los angeles police officer shot in the head during a george floyd protest in that city in june. >> the next officer as you know, he's a young, brilliant young guy and he's totally paralyzed. unlike biden, while i'm president of the united states, i will always stand with the heroes of our law enforcement. >> on november 3r third, you wl save america, you we cannot let this happen to our country. howie.eric: former vice presidt biden has been endorsed by more than 175,000 law enforcement officials. he said he's not for defunding the police but he supports reform and he backs law enforcement. >> i got criticized because i wouldn't support defunding police. i suggested that police need nor resources, they have to change their behavior, they've got to clean up you, you've got to get the bad cops out. they need more resources. the only person defunding the police is donald trump. eric: so who will win the police debate? josh kreshow joins us, politics editor for the national journal. josh, the assassinations of police officers not new. four years ago we had the same thing in new york, in brook when, a guy walks up to a patrol car, shoots two officers dead. it happened in philadelphia two years ago.
9:22 am
thankfully, that officer lived. eddie byrne, 1988 in new york and in '71 the black liberation army am a bushe ambushed two ofa famous case. how will this now resonate in the campaign? >> you hate to make this about politics. the reality is, there is a very vocal element of the democratic base that joe biden even is referencing in that sound clip that has called for defunding of the police and has criticized the police in the context of the protests that have been taking place across the country over the last few months and you can see the fox poll shows trump narrowing his deficit to 5 points. a lot of republicans, softer republicans perhaps coming home to the republican ticket. there's no doubt that the message of law and order has made a difference, it has helped president trump kind of gather voters concerned about that issue and solidified his support on the ticket. at the same time, there is polling, including the fox poll,
9:23 am
that shows that the fact that biden is saying he doesn't want to be part of that group, calling for he defunding the police, he wants to give more money to the police and call for reform. that actually -- that message is also working. you look at the fox poll, it's almost tied when it comes to which candidate is viewed as being better on handling law and order of. so democrats have a base issue. they have a progressive base issue that is way out of step with the average american on these issues. but joe biden has been brett sigh savvy they -- pretty savvy, trying to get in those progressive traps i should say on those issues. eric: one point, the president and vice president really seizing on one thing that did not appear to be very savvy, that wa the enemy comment. here's the president talking about that last night. >> he calls law enforcement -- biden called law enforcement the enemy. they're not ou our enemy. they're our friends, they're our great friends. without them, we wouldn't be here. >> joe biden said not long ago
9:24 am
that well-armed police become in his words, the enemy. when confronting lawlessness in our of streets. eric: that comment came in an interview when he was talking about some people perceiving the police as the enemy when they come into a neighborhood with these armored humvees, in other words, surplus military equipment, the militaryization of police. here is what the vice president said in july. >> surplus military equipment for law enforcement, they don't need that. the last thing you need is an armored humvee coming into a neighborhood, like the military invading. they don't know anybody. they become the enemy. they're supposed to be protecting these people. >> do we agree with can redirect some of the funding? >> yes. absolutely. eric: how does the vice president, the former vice president navigate all this? >> well, it's clear that the president is more emotionally connected to the issue and
9:25 am
brings it up a whole lot more than joe biden and you have the largest police union in the country, the fraternal order of police endorsing the president. i would bet if you polled all the police officers in the country you would see president trump having a sizable advantage. you had in the last few weeks african-american police chiefs in cities like rochester, dallas, and seattle resigning to protest how democrats, progressive leaders in their cities have handled law and order. there's no doubt that there is opportunity for republicans, for the president to really make in-roads on the issue. i just am looking at the polls and i think there's a feeling that a lot of voters that are republicans or lean republican that are very concerned about this and they've come back to the president's side even if they may have other disagreements with this administration. but the sort of average suburban swing voter is evenly divided. some agree with the president. some think that the president is stirring up a lot of the controversy and driving a lot of
9:26 am
the chaos and that's prevented trump from making further in-roads on this issue. eric: but then we see like something that happened in los angeles last night and that a shakes you to the core, that police officers who represent our nation, the good of our nation, the american values, sitting in a car, protecting innocent people in a minority neighborhood and a guy comes up and shoots them in the head. >> and you had protesters blocking the hospital according to the los angeles department, where the police officers who were critically wounded were headed. a lot of democrats have said that joe biden, not just a speech where he says he supports the police, but to have what you would call like a sister soldier moment, a moment where you criticize the extremes of your own party, say that is not acceptable. the calls for violence o is unacceptable even if you're not saying it yourself. i think that's one thing to keep an eye out for. joe biden has said the right
9:27 am
things, i think he's done what is politically necessary but he hasn't had that moment where he condemns the extremes, the base of his own party who have not said the right things on these issues. eric: that a reference by the way to when president clinton was running and gave a famous speech, going against the grain of part of his party. josh, this will continue with the national journal, josh, good to see you. >> thanks, eric. laura: communities up and down the west coast battling wildfires. big ones. up next, i'll speak with cal fire to get the latest on how the state is doing in getting these flames under control. ow. well, i was invited. not by me, mate. something's not right. they're calling all the shots. what do you want? we've got to get him out. not a chance. the days of entebbe are long over. it's not his fault. this is terrorism. the world will see how guilty you are. i should go.

9:33 am
ninth largest wildfire in the state's history. joining me now is daniel burlent the cal fire assistant deputy director. thank you for being here, daniel. i know your crews are being overwhelmed with the task at hand, with so much at stake. you have damage assessment teams working with fire crews on that. let's start with you giving us the latest on the containment, the heat and the smoke situation we keep seeing. >> fortunately, our weather conditions are cooperating in california. we are not seeing the hot temperatures that we had last week and we're not seeing the gusty winds, those are the two major weather factors that allowed multiple fires to grow so quickly and do so much destruction. now, this weekend we've had a good opportunity with the lack of wind and more seasonable temperatures, our firefighters have been making real good progress on 29 major wildfires that are burning across california. containment on almost every fire is up. again, progress is being made. laura: there's some good news
9:34 am
there. but the loss of life is of course first and foremost. absolutely devastating. the fiery terrain is unimagine unimaginable. when we see the pictures, and when you look at the structures that have been burned. flames don't discriminate. what can people do who are watching the fires, get closer to their homes right now or into their regions, is it too late to clear brush at this point? obviously, california has had a dry year. >> we are always asking our residents in rural areas to clear the defenseable space around their homes. it is too late at this point. there are things people can do, making sure their home is ready for fire by removing flammable a items like furniture, kids toys, anything that's up and around the house that could catch on fire, removing that away from your home will help. and then the other thing that we really need people to do is if a fire does prayin break out, we d early evacuation.
9:35 am
all too often, people stay behind, they wait, they wait until it's too late. we need people to be prepared now, take steps ahead of these fires so that when a fire does break out they can leave early. laura: you mentioned the weather at the top there and we know that weather and fire patterns go hand in hand and that fire can create its own weather and with the heat in california, i want you to tell us about the way firefighters are managing this especially when these infernos connect with each other, creating these monsters of flame. >> well, weather plays a huge factor in our fire season, not only does it lead to the dry conditions, which we are experiencing, but we had several significant different types of weather events. first, last month, we had over 14,000 lightning strikes in the middle of summer across much of northern california, leaving hundreds of fires behind. that was the first off. and then you add triple digit temperatures, record setting in some areas. so we have dry conditions,
9:36 am
triple digit temperatures and you ad the lightning and then that was followed up by several wind events that would fan the fires and so while we were making progress at the end of august, even the beginning of september, by the time we hit labor day the winds picked up and so even fires that had good containment around them, those fires were able to burn very quickly in the communities and now we know significant destruction and even fatalities were left behind. laura: i wanted to ask about the search and rescue front. i read there are many areas that are still so hot, you can't even get into the areas to search for the missing and imagine that, for our viewers at home and listening in the car, your loved one is missing and the firefighters can't even get to the area it's so hot to even go look for them. tell me about the heat index and what they're doing to help find people who are still missing. >> while temperatures have returned to more seasonable for this time of year, many of the areas are so significantly hot,
9:37 am
are still actively burning that all we are doing is focusing on putting out the fire, rescuing people, but the sheriff's departments when it is safe are able to go in there and start looking to assess the damage. we too are waiting, our damage assessment teams have been activated. we're trying to determine exactly how much damage was done. until it cools down in some of these fires it's not safe to do so and there are other hazards. power lines that are down, there are trees that have fallen, all of these other hazards make an issue as well. laura: i'm from sacramento, california. i was a reporter there for a long time. i've been a on a lot of those fire fights. i know how difficult it is. our thoughts and prayers are with you and your teams to stay safe. thank you so much for taking time today to bring us up-to-speed. we appreciate it. stay safe. eric. eric: well, laura, as the race

to develop a covid-19 vaccine ramps up, the u.s. is approaching 6.5 million confirmed infections. and the death toll sadly continues to climb. it is now standing at more than 193,000 deaths. this as there happens to be an alarming spike officials say in new infections across north and south dakota. in april we reported about minot, north dakota native, dr. jim orin. he got covid and he wrote an open letter to take a lesson from what new york city was going through. aishah hasnie has the latest. what are the health officials in the dakotas saying is behind the sharp increase in cases there? >> reporter: there is a lot of concern out of the dakotas right now. coronavirus infections as you mentioned in north and south dakota are growing rapidly, faster than anywhere else across the country. the dakotas have led the country in new cases per capita for the
9:39 am
last two weeks here. south dakota also seeing the nation's highest positivity rate, 17% for this last week, meaning that infections there are spreading more than testing is actually catching them and that's putting a big spotlight on a debate there over large gatherings and the lack of people wearing masks. in brooking, south dakota, the city council is considering a mask mandate. many residents are intensely opposed to that idea. this is happening as president trump continues to face the fallout from his interview with bob woodward and pushes back on criticism that he purposely played down the dangers of the virus. senior advisor steve cortez defending the president on fox news sunday this morning. listen. >> dr. fauci, somebody who is lilionized by critics of presidt trump, who is not a trump partisan, dr. fauci as late as february 29th, he appeared on national television and said no americans should change their

to hit the staff ford act. we've seen the activities, a network that was directed to criticism of president trump. so from across the board, beijing just wants to get rid of the president. eric: does this show that the president's policies are working? >> i think that they show that beijing thinks they're working and i actually think they're working as well. but obviously beijing has not seen an american president since eisenhower go after them and this is turning back on five decades of failed engagement policy. so beijing wants the united states to go back to those sort of very generous, very unreciprocal policies and they believe that vice president biden, who talks about that, probably would go back to those policies that in fact have not worked. eric: here's the president again talking about china. let's listen.
