1:01 am
president making the announcement confirming it a few minutes before 1 am tweeting we tested positive for covid-19, we will begin recording and recovery process immediately. we will get through this together. the first lady, milania trump also tweeting as too many americans have done the president and i are pointing at home after testing positive for covid-19, we are feeling good. i postponed all upcoming engagements, we will all get through this together. the white house decision, doctor sean connolly releasing a statement saying the president and first lady are well at this time and plan to remain at home within the white house, they continue, rest assured i expect the president to continue carrying out his duties without disruption while recovering, this news is come just hours after hope hicks tested positive. she was with the president most
1:02 am
recently wednesday at the rally in minnesota. tuesday between cleveland and last saturday at a rally in pennsylvania. some good news, the white house chief of staff mark meadows testing negative in his most recent test. this is significant, the staff and is coming in daily contact with the president are vigorously tested, we spoke a few hours ago to doctor ronnie jackson. here's what he says. >> if you look at people who have been around me for the past few days and asking questions whether they are symptomatic or figure out if anybody else is developing symptoms, been in contact with the president or first lady. >> someone who has been around the president, vice president mike pence tweeting this, karen and i send our love to dear friends donald trump and first lady milania the we join billions across america paying praying for influence what recovery, god bless you donald trump and our wonderful first lady.
1:03 am
the president had a fundraiser played in dc, traveling to florida for another rally. we learned from the white house those events of been canceled, his schedule has been cleared, we don't know yet from the white house when additional precautions might be taken for staff coming into the white house today, we just have to wait and learn more details as they become available. interesting knows, one phone call, conference call on the president's schedule was about concern for coronavirus for seniors particularly. unclear if that will still happen. it is worth noting the president, 74 years old, not known for his healthy diet and exercising, considered obese but does not have any comorbidities which would escalate is at risk group. we will have to wait and learn more as contact tracing becomes
1:04 am
front and center. >> you mentioned campaign community people involved in both campaigns. you been in dc a while, you know the possibilities. what do you think this does to the campaign going forward. let's focus on the next two weeks. just to predict an hour in advance, what you think is going to happen. >> it is anybody's guess what comes now but one thing that is fair to say, this news could have significant impact on the trajectory of the race. joe biden from the start is made his case to replace donald trump-based on his handling of the pandemic. the experts, the critics all point to lack of protocols around things like the
1:05 am
president's rallies, contact tracing, there's been no shortage of rallies in recent days and weeks so i think it is fair to say that you will see a couple of things coming. one will behind criticism from the president's critics, a little bit of i told you show and number 2, actual impact on the debate schedule. the vice presidential debate in salt lake city, this will impact the campaign trail and attacks on the president in terms of the democrat message for the handling of the pandemic. i have been texting an emailing everyone i can think of whether the president might consider addressing the rally that he will have to postpone or have someone go in his stead or maybe with the president virtually addressing the rally in florida.
1:06 am
that would be significant because the criticism the president leveled at joe biden for his virtual campaigning. we will wait and find out. jillian: thank you, appreciate it. let's bring in doctor jeanette, family and emergency medical doctor. you heard griff talking about how the president sees a lot of criticism for having these rallies, he has been on planes, traveling a significant amount especially the last few weeks, talk about the impact of plane travel when it comes to the coronavirus. >> what we have on airplanes are hit by filters, high-quality filters to help clean the air and filter the air from viral particles from coronavirus, influenza, tuberculosis and they take that and filter the air with outside air so you have a mix of filter
1:07 am
air with fresh air from the outside. i'm not concerned with airplane travel. my concern is if you have someone in close contact that is positive for the virus especially if they are symptomatic, even if they are asymptomatic they could still be. this is why it is so important to wear a mask, wash your hands, do the best you can to avoid large crowds, practice physical and social distancing. >> doctor marty mccarty, fox news medical contributor. how many patients have you given covid-19 tests to that end up being false positives? >> very few. the false negative rate is what we worry about. the thing is a positive in the white house is not the same as a positive in the real world because people i getting tested so aggressively, contact tracing to the end the degree
1:08 am
so we may detecting viral particles and calling them positive when we otherwise would not be doing that outside the white house so it is something to consider. we think viral load is probably lower in this situation for a lot of reasons. >> we talked about that with doctor siegal. sticking with you for a second. you talk about contact tracing specifically, how is that different? you reference how people are tested on a daily basis if not on a daily basis but do you think it will be somewhat easy to figure out who has this virus, who they need to quarantine, and dozens, perhaps easier than those of us who are out in the world and that might be more difficult? >> it will be. when somebody is undergoing contact tracing in manhattan and say they took the l train or went to grand central station, you can't do anything
1:09 am
with that information. when new york had a massive outbreak they said it would be contact tracing that helped them dig out. it was not. contact tracing is not the reason new york overcame their outbreak. it is important, we need to do it but it's biggest benefit is in a controlled setting like the white house, they will be doing it to anyone who had interactions. it is not outdoor, that is not where the superspreading events occur. it is indoor congregant settings. >> we asked this question earlier. i want to ask you the same question. if a patient presented feel like donald trump knowing his health history as you do, nobody likes to me, his height, his weight, all of that, how would you treat the president? >> it's important to remember that 99% of people in the same shoes as donald trump right now will have a full recovery doing absolutely nothing. we take precautions, right now the best thing to do is give the president some support and
1:10 am
follow his condition. there was a study that came out in the journal of the american medical association that showed for every case confirmed positive, 6 to 24 times more people had the antibody which means a lot of people might have been in this situation and we don't aggressive testing and the chances of him developing symptoms are actually very low according to that study. if he does develop symptoms that is when we can start talking about the big toolbox we have now which has lowered the case vitality rate down to almost seasonal flu levels for somebody in his situation. >> that leads to my next question, you've been treating covid-19 patients from the onset of this pandemic, you've seen people with symptoms, without. as of right now we don't have much information about what symptoms or not the president and first lady might be experiencing, is reported they are not experiencing symptoms. with this positive test result
1:11 am
the very a time they could develop symptoms? have you seen that? >> that's definitely a possibility. common symptoms i've seen in my patients, shortness of breath, chest tightness, some of my patients lost sense of taste, sense of smell, some have severe cough that are uncontrollable and some have fever, headache, sore throat, body aches, similar symptoms to the flu, but fortunately we have some medications, some tools, some therapeutics that we didn't have six months ago. we have progressed significantly. we achieve a lot and gained a lot to combat this virus. even though the president is in higher risk age group we have a lot to protect and treat him along with his wife as well.
1:12 am
>> we will go back to you throughout our breaking coverage. breaking news coverage continues, donald trump and the first lady testing positive for coronavirus. jillian: what impact will this have on the campaign trail? a campaign strategist joins us next. these folks, they don't have time to go to the post office

>> we are back with fox news alert as donald from quarantines, joe biden is expected to the campaign trail in michigan. >> donald trump off the campaign trail how will this affect the election 30 today the way? john thomas, if this wasn't so serious commuter your hand wuhan morgan 2020 gives to us but this is serious medically and politically. what does this do to the campaign? >> it changes the mechanics of the race, takes away one of
1:16 am
donald trump's key strengths which is taking his message directly to the people in form of rallies, get out the vote efforts, it also slows down trump's ability to raise money in person. he has been high dollar events plant in california in the coming days, those probably won't go forward anymore because donors want to talk to the president when they buy that rubber chicken. it changes that and it may or may not extinguish any more debates from happening, the first debate might be our only chance to see these candidates side-by-side and in an odd way it may make the president more relatable in the sense that americans understand he goes through things every day americans would just like us. we don't know how that will play out but it will change the race. jillian: he will face a lot of criticism. if you are advising the
1:17 am
president's campaign on what to do do you take this virtual? do you go that route? there has also been a lot of criticism from the trump campaign towards the biden campaign for the fact that he is the most of his campaign in the last few months virtually, where would you advise to go with that? >> you got to play the cards you have left to play. in person is better and that's why the trump campaign does that. there is a reason biden's campaign said they were going to go door-to-door but you can't do that, you can do rallies, the president has huge online support base, he has twitter, an army of twitter followers, he can engage his supporters to do what he can't do which is get out the word, hand-to-hand combat by calling friends, texting friends but you got to shift virtually. in the stage of the campaign it
1:18 am
is about getting out your message and getting out your vote. you have to do it virtually because that is why you can do right now. >> along those lines you think in any way, shape or form this galvanizes his money machine? do you think there are people that were on the sidelines, weren't going to give but see the singapore a lot more money into donald trump because we know he doesn't have the chance in the near future of those in person rallies, the constant presence in our lives? >> i can guarantee you the fundraising emails titled we got your back are being written right now because donald trump is going to have to rely on his most hard-core supporters to step up to the plate, raise that money, give that money, to get out the vote. we are going to see trump's base step up and that has been one of his greatest strengths, his base.
1:19 am
we will see if they step in him his biggest time of need. >> appreciate you taking time with us. 18 after the hour, reaction pouring in as the president and first lady test positive for covid-19. >> carley shimkus with the social media response and there's a lot of it next.

jillian: americans taking to social media sending their prayers. todd: the well wishes. carley: a very important well wish coming from mike pence who posted as we saying karen and i send our prayers to donald trump and milania trump, we join millions across america praying for the pool and swift recovery, god bless you donald

trump and our wonderful first lady. another tweet that came in an hour ago from congresswoman tulsi gabbard from hawaii, my husband a brand and i offer our best wishes to donald trump and the first lady, praying for their speedy recovery. we send our best wishes to ivanka, tiffany, donald trump junior, eric, and baron during this difficult time. i was looking at the comment section is a lot of people saying the kind of reaction we love to see from a democrat, somebody who ran to replace the president and she posted as we wishing best wishes and although hard to the president and first lady. just in amash who went from republican to independent, posted a tweet saying best wishes to the president and the first lady on a full recovery and for the health and
1:24 am
well-being of their family, white house staff and those around the minute we from congressman spanoh, our healing prayers are with donald trump and first lady milania wishing them both a swift recovery, considering the president has such a busy schedule and around so many people part of your brain thinks now surprise something like this could happen to him but every time a world leader gets coronavirus it becomes a very real thing. i remember when the prime minister of the uk boris johnson tested positive and i thought if he could get it anybody could. i have a feeling he will be on the phone with johnson in the coming days to see how he was able to handle leading nation when being sick with covid-19 and boris johnson got it, he was hospitalized, hopefully that doesn't happen to donald trump.
1:25 am
>> he was really sick with coronavirus, he was in the hospital, definitely a different scenario but we will follow it to see how it plays out. we are so close to the debate. it is a critical next 30 days ahead. we will have this covered throughout the morning. todd: if you're just tuning in donald trump and the first lady have tested positive for covid-19. >> continuing live team coverage. history

1:29 am
>> reporter: the news rocking washington and reaching far beyond the capital city, the news was confirmed by the president just before 1:00 am when the president tweeted this, float us and i tested positive for covid-19. we will begin quarantine and recovery immediately, we will get through this together. milania trump tweeting as too many americans and i have done, we are at home after testing positive for covid-19. we are feeling good and canceled all upcoming engagements, stay safe and we will get through this together. doctor sean connolly put out a statement saying the president and first lady are well at this time and plan to remain at home with the white house adding rest assured i expect the president to continue carrying out his duties without disruption while recovering. this news is hours after hope
1:30 am
hicks tested positive, she was with the president at the rally in minnesota and on tuesday in cleveland and last saturday in pennsylvania. we are learning the white house chief of staff mark meadows tested negative, people close to the president, white house staff said daily particularly in coming days, and weighing in. >> it is not the same as a positive in the real world. and we made be detecting viral particles and calling them positive when we otherwise would not be doing that outside the white house. >> mike pence tweeting karen
1:31 am
and i send our prayers to donald trump, millions across america praying for the full and swift recovery, and attending a rally, the president clearing his schedule for the moment, we are waiting for more details as we get them from the white house. one thing is fair to say with 32 days to the november 3rd election this could have far-reaching implications in the way things look at the way things are done and the president who has been vigorously hitting the campaign trail in person, had rallies, looks like it will be curtailed for the foreseeable future.
1:32 am
jillian: that leads me, there have been criticisms and different things on both sides, they have been outdoors, in crowds, the president socially distanced from those who attend the rally but you wonder what this will mean for the upcoming weeks before the election. you've been at some of these rallies, talk about the protocol and how they work, the president and first lady are tested all the time. that includes the rallies. >> reporter: excellent question. you have two things happening, the actual experts who have questions, the protocols with the rallies themselves where we see the president not wearing a mask, you see tens of thousands attending the rally not socially distancing, all protocols and recommendations from the president's
1:33 am
coronavirus task force and government cdc recommendation, the president not doing it. the president wearing a mask more often in recent days and political ramifications, and on twitter, julian castro wishing the president and first lady well, and now the president realizes this wasn't a hoax. you will have a far-reaching impact of how this could potentially change the administration's response to the pandemic, the leader of the free world and first lady contracted this virus. we will see an escalation of criticism for the president's handling of it. we've seen time and again the
1:34 am
dnc, joe biden's main focus and main attack on the president, making his case to replace him is his handling of covid-19. todd: keep working your sources, keep us posted, we appreciate your insight especially on mornings like this. let's bring in doctor mark siegel, medical contributor, thanks for staying with us, doctors are trained to treat the condition, not necessarily the individual involved. it is jarring when you hear the president of the united states and the first lady getting something like this but when you first heard the news what was your initial reaction in level of concern? >> the fact that we were hearing right off the bat, i checked with sources and white house, they were asymptomatic i thought was very good news and i also had a lot of experience
1:35 am
with this, this was reported half an hour ago, they will be positive and you have covid-19 but the person can't even remember when they had it because they were never symptomatic because was a large majority people have mild conditions or asymptomatic. that has been my experience and regardless of age group, regardless of preexisting conditions but i have to admit what went through my mind is the president is 74 years old and overweight, those are risk factors we pay a lot of attention to. he has to be carefully watched. right now so far so good. jillian: let's stick with his age, 74 years old, doctor siegel, when you're looking at, i know you don't treat him, when you look at him, what we know about his health conditions, his age, how is it different the way you go about treating someone in his age
1:36 am
group versus 6 months from now when this pandemic started. we didn't know as much information. >> good question. half of it you are seeing which is earlier detection, earlier diagnosis, availability of testing. the white house has been testing for a while now but the early testing, knowing someone has it before they are sick is the first thing but were he to get sick, we have more treatments to offer than we had before. we know how to manage this better, we know how to use communications, we know about. finish we weren't using before. this is a disease that causes a lot of blood clotting, we know about the anti-inflammatories, we use steroids in his condition, remdesivir, antivirus, we know how to manage ventilators, all of this we didn't know before, has led to a lot more people, tons more people surviving than at the beginning and also an implication with studies going on now, this virus is becoming
1:37 am
less severe over time. that is characteristic of pandemics but it is not becoming less transmissible, seems to be more contagious and that makes it more important, something you've been featuring over the last few minutes which these rallies are occurring in multiple states all around the country with people too close together not wearing masks, some of these are hotspots, the midwest, the trafficking, the traveling is helping to spread the virus and may be a reason we are seeing these cases. todd: the biden campaign faces a decision. do they take advantage of this opportunity, the in the time the president hits the trail and do rallies, things like that or do they quarantine joe biden because on tuesday night as you see right there the president and joe biden, albeit
1:38 am
socially distanced, were close to one another for 90 plus minutes. >> i would like to see some kindness out of the biden campaign. that would mean a lot to me. there has been so much viciousness and vitriol in this election. what a nice time for former vice president biden to which donald trump and milania trump well but i hope they don't take advantage of it politically but maybe it isn't a nod in the direction of virtual campaigning or more than these rallies, we've seen protests, i don't want to say on the democrat side the democratic party, some of the protests in the cities, so little -- heather: is politically. i'm asking medically. if you were in charge of the campaign, the biden campaign from a medical perspective would you tell joe biden the risks do not outweigh the benefits, you should quarantine just to be safe.
1:39 am
>> i think now. if you're asking if he needs to be corn teens because of where he was on the debate stage, no. but this is a wake-up call for both campaigns to go in the direction of virtual. i don't think - not quarantines. >> we will check with you. >> the president and the first lady testing positive, continuing coverage after the break.

1:41 am
1:42 am
jillian: fox news alert, donald trump and the first lady in corn teen at the white house after confirming they have coronavirus. todd: the very latest developments, ashley joins us.
1:43 am
>> reporter: we talked to several people, doctors, our correspondence who cover the white house in dc about protocols that go into place for the masks, social distancing and things like that. i want to mention briefly we did hear from the president himself on sean hannity's show, waiting on test results, he did not sound 6, no coughing or anything like that, we did talk to doctor ronnie jackson, former white house physician and a question, what is the protocol, play it by ear, making decisions as they go. this is what they had to say.
1:44 am
>> he is going to be fine. they are completely asymptomatic. >> reporter: we spoke to many doctors, 6 or 7 doctors, the general idea of where the president stand with not being symptomatic, and showing symptoms, they were saying they expect, by the doctors, they expected the president to stay asymptomatic, by way of where the stands is, and a mask on and according to kevin cork, they say social distancing is going to affect, it is a strict
1:45 am
protocol to get in. listen to what kevin had to say. >> we are tested when we go into the white house and around the president. it is a little surprising from that perspective. there is more risk of exposure. >> as far as being on the road, on the debate stage, he's feet away, and and a lot of talk about the masks and mask wearing. the debate stage. no problem wearing the mask, that was brought up lot overnight.
1:46 am
>> thank you for being on top of this all night long. donald trump testing positive for covid-19. >> a live report on what we know right now next.
1:47 am
1:48 am
1:49 am
jillian: we continue to follow breaking news happening overnight, donald trump and milania trump tested positive for covid-19. they confirmed this information on twitter shortly before 1:00 in the morning after longtime trusted aide hope hicks tested positive for covid-19. we are told she had been showing mild symptoms of
1:50 am
coronavirus. we haven't heard many details about the president and first lady. we heard so far they are not showing symptoms, this coming days after the president was with hope hicks at an event at a rally in pennsylvania tuesday after being in cleveland, wednesday. todd: upon hearing the news you immediately go to an infinite amount of questions in so many are areas, medically, politically. we've been with you to answer as many of those questions as possible but to highlight a few your initial attention goes to the president and the first lady and hope hicks. what is their medical prognosis? how much of the viral load do we have? these are questions we don't have answers to but once we are curious about and then the question goes to politics. what does this mean for the campaign? what does this mean for governing the country? we know the president of the robust individual, we are assuming he has the best of care because he is the president of the united states but those questions need to be asked. it is on the minds of americans.
1:51 am
jillian: who else surrounding the president could test positive. ashley was spearheading our coverage overnight. mark meadows, the chief of staff tested negative for coronavirus, that is the information we have overnight, you heard a lot of people, griff jenkins talked about it, kevin cork talked about it in the overnight hours, when you are one of those people surrounding the president day in and day out you are tested if not daily, at least consistently daily and they are getting daily tests and they were both surprised, kevin cork in a soundbite saying you are a little surprised because they are tested so routinely and tested so much of the white house. todd: let's pop up the protocols, staffers must wear a mask upon entry, keep social
1:52 am
distance from colleagues, secret service agents close to the president must wear masks. one question we've not raised during an hour and a half on the year, we didn't hear much coverage initially, what happens confirmation of amy coney barrett? it was last saturday at 5:00 pm that amy coney barrett and her family were at the white house for the groundbreaking historic introduction of her is the nominee from the trump administration to be the ninth justice on the supreme court. she's got 7 kids, a husband, the focus turns to her health and when did the president contract this, how safe is she is what does it mean moving forward in the process? she's been in contact with a number of senators. jillian: doctors on the show say contacts tracy at the white house is different from contact tracing outside the white house because at the white house as we mentioned people are tested
1:53 am
on a daily basis. you will be able quickly according to doctors we spoken to figure out who is positive for covid-19 and who is not. the question i have, it is not even 5 am on the east coast, mike pence, the vice president, has he been in close contact with the president? there is a debate next week for the vice presidential candidate, mike pence and kamala harris, could that be in jeopardy if the vice president has been around the president? these are questions we will learn about in the morning as the sun comes up before people wake up and as the contact tracing is at a higher rate. todd: you mention the vice president, what does this mean for the biden campaign? i asked doctor siegel his advice in the campaign because they are presented with an opportunity, we live in a rough-and-tumble political world, does joe biden campaign when donald trump will be off
1:54 am
the campaign trail or does joe biden say an abundance of caution, i'm going to quarantine as well, so many unanswered questions, we learned this news 4 to 5 hours ago, we will guide you through it for the next hour. jillian: the president has been on a robust travel schedule with the rallies and the debate, he was scheduled to travel to florida for a rally, one of the questions is what will happen? will it happen virtually or not at all? these are things we will continue to follow but if you are just waking up and joining us the president of the united states and first lady milania trump have tested positive for covid-19. this came in the early hours shortly before 1:00 this morning. todd: donald trump and the first lady tested positive, joining us at the top of the hour, do not go anywhere. robinhood believes now is the time to do money.
