it was deemed safe by white house operations. >> who assessed that it was safe for the president, who knew he had a test, to travel to new jersey, on marine one. >> white house operations made the decision it was safe. >> what is going to happen with the election campaign another question. a statement a while ago, all previously announced campaign events involving the president's participation are in the process of being moved to virtual events or are being temporarily postponed. the vice president's events will be continuing as scheduled. but one of the other big unknowns, bill, october 15, two weeks from today, is the second presidential debate -- two weeks from yesterday is the second presidential debate. what will happen to that? if the president has three negative coronavirus tests before then, he could make it. if not, they may have to figure out a different way to do it. >> watching the clock, thank you. joe biden and jill testing

negative. the jobs number came out earlier, about 650,000 jobs added well under the one million mark a lot of people like to see. how do you categorize this report? is it a b or a c or how do you say it? >> no, it's -- at least an a minus. i mean i don't know, people are knocking these numbers. they should look at them carefully. private payrolls were up 877,000 plus the 40,000 revision from prior months. that's over 900,000. the reason the headline number that comes out is because schools did not open across the country the way they normally do. and therefore there's a faulty seasonal adjustment which lowered the whole number. so take a look at private payrolls, plus 877, plus another 40 revision, and 7.9% unemployment rate. these are excellent numbers. let me add one more thing, last evening and this morning we got
12:09 pm
the new automobile sales, they're just soaring. the blowout numbers. 16.3 million, double where it was at the worst point last april. cars are going out, and they have to be produced, because the inventories are low. that means more jobs, more work shifts and higher wages. >> here's the graphic, 22 million jobs lost during the pandemic. 11 million recovered, about 10 million not recovered. we're about 50% of the way. >> yes. >> when you talk about the covid relief that's being discussed right now, i'm seeing that nancy pelosi and steve ma chuch inspoke for 65 minutes, seems like a long conversation. trying to recall my numbers off the top of my head, i think republicans were willing to go up to 1.5, democrats are at 2.2. are we close on this, larry, or not? >> well, i don't -- you know what, bill, i don't want to

not going to run forever, should be wolsterred by congressional action. we like money for schools. we need assistance for the airlines. we talked to the ceos almost daily, they need help, everybody knows that. these are key areas. we could just get this done. >> wait, wait, i have about 30 seconds. these numbers are nuts. but you're talking about a difference of $700 billion. during covid times. everything gets -- it gets messy. so you said 1.5, does that suggest you're near something, yes or no? >> in the neighborhood, in the neighborhood. i don't want to raise expectations. i will let treasury secretary manuchin handle that. it's not the numbers, bill hemmer, it's the specific targeted items where we need help. >> what about bailout for the states? is that a red line for republicans, can you get over that?
12:12 pm
>> well, it is a matter of disagreement, considerable disagreement. let's do that stuff later. let's do the covid stuff now. the airline assistance, the small business assistance, the unemployment assistance. those should be the priorities. we can do other bills later for heaven sakes. >> thanks for your time, see whether or not there's progress later. ripple effects on the hill, democrats calling for a pause in the push to confirm the supreme court nominee after a senator on the judiciary committee tested positive. we'll talk to a member of the republican leadership. and 2020 advisor corey lewandowski was with hope hicks on wednesday, he'll join me for how the campaign is adapting and how he's doing whether or not he's covid positive. chris wallace shared a stage with president trump and vice president biden a few days ago, we'll see what this october surprise could mean. 32 days, again, from a national election.

i don't know where we will be on sunday. i think at the moment this is an hour-to-hour story. when do we hear from the president and see the president. >> absolutely. we're hoping to get the top white house official available whether it's the president, the vice president, or the chief of staff to come on sunday because you're right, it's a breaking news story. i do have a piece of news because as i reported earlier today, when the trump family came, in although the rule was everybody in the hall except for the president, the vice president, and me, that all of the rest of the people were supposed to wear masks. the trump family came in with masks and took them off. they were offered masks by health and safety officers of the cleveland clinic and they rejected them. also it turns out that tuesday afternoon, when the president and his team came in for a walk-through, up on the stage with the president and all of his top people, looking at the podium, looking at the lighting, what the arrangement was going to be, none of them were wearing

masks. i can tell you, i wasn't there at the time, but during the time i was with the commission in my run thrus, everybody was wearing a mask. and members of the commission were not especially happy with the fact that the presidential party was not wearing a mask. there seems to have been a disregard for the risks of this virus. >> bill: the clinic had a rule, you wear the mask inside. that was stated clearly. if you look at the statement today, i'll read a key line. individuals travelling with both candidates including the candidates themselves had been tested and tested negative by their respective campaigns. they weren't tested by the clinic based on the statement, chris. and to me, that sounds like an honor system. >> well, they couldn't be tested by the clinic. >> bill: you were tested, i was tested. >> i understand that bill. but the difference was i arrived on sunday, you arrived on monday, they didn't arrive until tuesday afternoon.
