walter reid. kristin. reporter: arthel the president and his medical team say he's doing very well that he's not having any trouble breathing. but a senior administration official, this is somebody who is very close to president trump somebody who has been with him here at walter reid is painting a very different picture. much more serious picture, and saying that the president is still not on a clear path to recovery. a senior administration official also told our john roberts that, quote, 24 hours ago there was real concern about the president's vitals for the past 12 hours there's been zero concern. earlier indication for extremely good prognosis and next 48 hours will be critical. but we know that yesterday morning the president was showing troubling signs of a possible progression from mild to more severe symptoms that's when his medical team decided to take action and aggressively intervene. they started him on antibody cocktail on five day course of

progress has been made over last six months in fighting this plague with their help i'm feeling well now i want to make one point about sourcing because i know a lot of you watching are frustrated that we are not naming this senior administration official who initially pulled the white house reporters that were in the pool today, that the next 48 hours are really going to be critical here. and painted a less rosy picture than the fir that the president's doctors were painting. we are not naming who that person is. because that senior administration official asked us not to. but i want to assure ow viewers that we know who this person is. he was speaking in front of multiple reporters. he's what you would consider to be a very credible source. someone very close to president trump, and it is a standard journalistic practice to not name that person unless that person explicitly states that he wants to be named i know it is frustrating at home because we are getting a bit of a

conflicting picture in terms of how president trump is doing right now. so that's why we wanted it to present all of the information to you. tell you what senior administration official is saying and also play this sound bite and let you know what doctors are saying as well we report, you decide arthel. arthel: very good for that clarification thank you very much. eric. eric: yeah. arthel well some big names in administration and nation's political life who are close to the president. have tested positive for coronavirus as you know, the past few days. many of them did attend last saturday's rose garden ceremony with a president nominated judge amy coney barrett for the supreme court you've seen photo the on the lawn and video some are hugging fellow attendees not wearing mask or social distancing. doing things that we all have been told we need to do to prevent the becoming infected mark meredith with the latest if from there we're getting growing tally mark it seems that people

who are testing positive so far. reporter: eric there were dozens if not hundreds of people at that event there's still going to be time before we know how many of those that were there will have tested positive. as you were talking about that epght is come under scrutiny for not following the covid precautions a use mention it was a week ago today that we saw the president host that large gathering to nominate judge amy coney barrett you see the people there in the audience most not wearing mask not doing social distancing either. and in addition to senior white house staff we saw senators there as well as the vice president. we know, though, the vice president has tested negative for the virus that's the good news and those continue to watch include first lady and senior administration hope hicks. president campaign manager bill former white house counselor kellyanne conway at that event as well as former new jersey chris christie reporters asked white house today, white house doctors i should say why and what is being done to make sure those people that were there monitored or tested again.
1:07 pm
>> who is handling contact tracing is that the white house or cdc? >> the white house, white house medical unit conjunction with, you know, collaboration of cdc local and state health departments are conducting all contact tracing guidelines. reporter: now since had start of the pandemic the white house is tried a few diskt approaches to keep people safe early on we saw temperature checks and screened before they came on to ground that's no longer the case but a republican senator tells fox news for at least last week's event she was tested for covid. >> we were tested before we went into the rose garden me and fellow senators we were practicing social distancing to the extent that it's, you know, meeting the guidelines, wearing masks. reporter: now one question still is what was all mean for the vice president, we've reached out to his office to see if he has a chance to speak with the president today we have not heard back and hitting the campaign trail later on this week and next week going out to
1:08 pm
arizona on thursday. but we don't expect to see president trump out on the campaign trail any time soon. the trump campaign telling fox news just today that they are still actively campaigning at force and doing a lot of virtual events as well and president son is doing a grassroots town o'phone call later on today. also i want to mention right now eric all signs are that senate judiciary committee still plans to move forward with amy coney barrett nominations that set to get underway for hearing in less than two weeks from now and senate republicans eager to make that happen before election day. eric. eric: all right mark, and mentioning grassroots you can see behind you the lawn mower is going on so president laid up, they have to take care of the white house good to know maintenance is continuing i'm sure president will be reassured of that. thanks. arthel. arthel: thank you. well meanwhile democratic presidential nominee joe biden and wife jill biden boast testing negative for coronavirus so far. the former vice president
1:09 pm
sending well wishes to president trump and the first lady, the biden campaign is also taking down negative advertising while the president recovers. hillary vaughn is following the biden campaign from wilmington, delaware with more. hi hillary. >> hi, arthel well the biden campaign is making some changes like taking down negative ad and not other changes but they are going to continue in person campaigning. and they're also going to start in person door knocking with some socially distanced safety protocols in place. after in person campaigning in battleground state of michigan yesterday biden is on trail today but doing it online biden will attend a virtual town hall with union members this afternoon. but bernie sanders is on the stump on bide 's behalf in new hampshire today. >> it doesn't matter if you are an essential worker, in a

supermarket, if you are a packing house worker, if you are a bus driver. and it doesn't matter if you are the president of the united states. each and every one of us is vulnerable and we will remain vulnerable until there is a vaccine or a perfected cure. reporter: the biden campaign is requesting one change after their candidate possibly had a brush with coronavirus at the presidential debate. so at the vp debate next week harris and vice president mike pence will be 12 seats apart. harris is also only the ground in utah today and is starting debate prep. >> so it's great to be here i'm honored to be here. i'll be here for the next few days. preparing for the debate i want to thank people of utah for being so welcoming in such a
1:11 pm
warm way. reporter: biden team has addressed concern that it's possible that biden took a covid test too soon after that possible contact with the president when he was positive with covid. but the biden campaign is telling me in a statement, that biden stayed socially distance and never got too close to the president kept mask on xepght when on stage so they're confident it is safe for him to continue campaigning in person and does not need to quarantine. arthel. arthel: hillary vaughn in wilmington, delaware. thank you. eric. eric: you know, politicianings and public figures have been taking a social media to wish the president and the first lady a speedy recovery. which you know others are using president illness to take on his response to the pandemic. and to criticize him for not have taken the virus more seriously. like to riot and mocking mask wearing and not respecting social distancing, alex hogan live in new york city with more on that. alex. reporter: hi that's right we've

seen a lot of reaction since the diagnosis and of course hospitalization. >> i'm confident he'll be able to get through this and recover. nicely. >> president trump this morning, he says hello. first thing he asked about was the first lady. she's doing good. >> new jersey governor phil murray wishing them a speedy recovery and calling it a wakeup call to every single american. new york governor andrew cuomo extending his support as well. >> i express my best wishes to the president and the first lady. i hope they -- symptoms they get are mild. we've all had enough experience on this now -- some covid cases are relatively mild. some are more significant symptoms and i hope they have a

mild case and i hope they have a speedy recovery. reporter: still despite the many well wishes, criticism online from some arguing the president failed to take the pandemic seriously. former secretary julian castro tweeting president if he's are confirmed i qsh you and the first lady well i hope this is a wakeup call that it is not a hoax or injecting bleach we need a plan and not the same divisive dangerous rhetoric. actor mark tweeting anything positive can come from testing positive, it would be his followers reevaluating their opinion. if they will now accept a lockdown social distancing and mandatory mask wearing, we could crush the virus like we should have from the start. most lawmakers regardless of their political opinion say that they wish for that speedy recovery that all of these health concerns should be put aside from politics. president responding today saying that he's thankful to report he's received that he is doing well.
1:14 pm
eric. eric: and we join in those good wishes, of course. alex hogan thanks. arthel. arthel: we do indeed eric thank you. as president continues treatment, at walter reid a number of aids in lawmakers have also tested positive in the fast few days. why some are now scrutinizing a recent rose garden event for potentially fueling this spread. you see we're from here and there and here... your family's story is waiting to be shared. at ancestry.com

there kellyanne conway tested positive for coronavirus if you look at your screen now you can see faces circled in red. well they have tested positive since then. so far the names of people sitting well basically they're next to each other or at least to the first there's or four rows. as you can see very few masks were worn. there was no social distancing. seeming negligence of the precaution health officials have been telling american people to follow to keep our nation safe. doctor is with us infectious disease doctor and senior scholar at the john hopkins for health security in baltimore doctor good to see you white house chief of staff mark meld does says next 48 hours in his words for the president prognosis are critical. can you explain why that would be if the president is in good spirits and fever broke what are they looking out for and next concerned for in the next 48 hours? >> you have to remember this is
1:22 pm
kind of a protracted illness it is not one acute phase of a couple of days and then you're better or not it goes through the second period around six or 7 days after infection where your immune system revs up where there's a battle going on between the virus and your immune system that can cause damage to your lungs and we often see people do well for the first couple of days outside of the hospital and then they come in short of breath needing oxygen. so we want to watch people especially high risk individuals like the president as they move there that critical period where their immune system may get into trouble and become more short of breath. eric: what is your assessment he was antibodies given so quickly is that aggressive treatment because he's president or aggressive treatment because he needs it as a patient? >> probably a little bit of both. remdesivir has become standard of care so anybody that gets hospitalized anybody that needs oxygen, usually gets remdesivir. he got the antibody cocktail
1:23 pm
based on compassion and in clinical trials seeing promising data but not everybody has access to that and this reflects there was concern high risk individual, led orally person that has a fever. that has covid for several hours, that you want to be aggressive you don't want to get behind the eight ball with this virus because we've seen people deteriorate especially in high risk groups so take every precaution you can to assure against that. eric: here's doctor shawn dewily during the news conference a few hours ago. let's listen. >> we have monitored his cardiac function, his kidney function his liver function all of those are normal. and the president this morning is not on oxygen. not having difficulty breathing, or walking around the white house medical unit upstairs. eric: report is try to pin him down whether doctors and whether he was on oxygen that kept saying not now and not friday. but there are reports that he was. what would it fell you if he was
1:24 pm
on oxygen? yesterday -- but it is doesn't need it right now that is 96% oxygen level. >> so it would tell me that there was a time when his breathing was compromised that they did a poll put a thing on his finger and it was low. and it was such that you needed to give supplemental oxygen and we know people have different oxygen needs during different parts of this illness i've had patient whors on a couple of liters for several hours and they don't need as much soix you can have intermittent needs for oxygen but this isn't a mild case of the coronavirus. this is at least moderate and maybe even severe if we would get to the full picture of what's going on there. so this isn't thing to take lightly this is a serious illness for the president. eric: you mentioned moderate or severe the average time it takes symptom to short of breath is fiving to eight days average time from symptom to going into intensive care is ten to 12 days you mention to five to ten days on inflammation that's what
1:25 pm
dr. conley addressed let's listen to what he said and get your reaction. >> he's doing so well. but with the known course of the illness day 7 to 10 we get concerned about inflammatory phase given that we provide some of these advance therapies so early in the course later earlier than most of the patients we know and follow. it's hard to tell where he is on that course. >> do we have to be concerned now seven in seven days now from inflammation and there's a john hopkins mt. sinai trial to fight fladges they have 100% success in the first trial. but now it is a blind trial. are other therapeutics what do you think can happen and what should we look out for in terms of inflammation? >> look for worsening of symptoms does he need oxygen again. does his shortness of breath
1:26 pm
return, is he tiebl pursue activities activities that he's trying to do while working at the hospital? those are things to look out for also they're monitoring his blood. there are certain blood markers that become to become abnormal when you're going into that inflammation stage. so those things are tracked on hospitalized patients with covid fever day. and when they start to get into danger zone then you start thinking could this be a storm coming and therapeutic options coming and repurpose drugs from oncology hopefully we'll never get to that point with the president but we have to be very careful with somebody that has high risk factors for severe disease already hospitalized with this virus. eric: do you think we would be told that and if that indeed happens or thankfully clearing out of the woods with that? >> it's hard to say i know that there's been some kind of miscommunication between the white house medical team and the general public as well as with the press there's things that i would like to know that i don't know. and i don't know if all of that will be disclosed hopefully
1:27 pm
we'll have full transparency because i think porpt that people realize that covid-19 is a serious infectious disease and high risk groups can have a really critical illness from it and that this is something that we want to know about and i think that it will help people restrategize to happen to the most powerful person in the country most protected person in the country. >> we have to be careful and do our part doctor of john hopkins, of course, thank you for your insight and we will certainly be talking to you more in the coming weeks. >> thank you. eric: arthel. arthel: one month until election day biden and harris campaign admitted they are in unchartered waters how the president illness is reshaping final weeks of the campaign.

biden's campaign has been polling negative advertising after the president's covid diagnosis. mr. biden say he's going forward with campaigning this while the president is laid up with the clock ticking closer to election day. the trump campaign advisor corey lewandowski earlier on fox news channel said that trump train is still chugging along. >> look we understand what is at stake in this election the future of our country is at stake we're here to support donald trump to stand in the breach that he can't stand in right now and i can tell you this. the people on the trump train continue to be actively engaging dcting for this president for four more years in an election one month from today. eric: so how will the president's illness effect the race in the home stretch? political white house correspondent associate editor anita joins us now. boys, man, this really -- putting the president's health aside that we all hope for. the scrambles this campaign, how
1:36 pm
do both campaigns what do they do? how does the president's campaign adapt from here when the candidate is laid up in a hospital room? >> it's a great question. i've been talking to people for the last two days about that and the answer is they haven't quite figured it out. the big, you know, decision they have to make here is if the president quickly recovers, and can he be back on the campaign trail in the couple of weeks clearly they're hoping that will be the case and then he can resume his activity for last weeks of the election and some saying that's not possible so trying to figure out what to do. you know, some of that is that they are, you know, right now they're canceling postponing a lot of events that he was supposed to do. he was going to a number was states next few days. they're talking about possibly sending surrogates or making them virtual events. ofnl the vice president still going to be campaigning maybe canceling some of the events that are before next week's vice presidential debate on wednesday. but then he'll pick up after that. so there's a lot of -- people that have different

opinions on what to do and they're still trying figure it out on the republican side and on the democratic side as you just said, joe biden and kamala harris plan to continue to campaign. eric: we have that 18 second video in the white house yesterday of the president that reassured the country you want to see him. you want to know that he's okay. it's comforted nation to see that. in a few days, do you think the president will do that again but in a longer venue maybe with a big screen live directly addressing the crowd. qowld that help and certainly when it came of the white house with a mask that we're watching now. that was a sign of reassurance on his own power and the fact that the crams were there cameras were there to the nation. >> people wanted to see him and he wanted to be seen that's why he walked out to the hospital like that with the media there. obviously, they didn't need to be there and they didn't have to be there. so you know when he walked into walter reed same thing there are some of his supporters allies of

the president that say if he's to it he should do some kind of address to the nation or do a video at least or do something. you know there were people concerned yesterday that he wasn't even tweeting which, you know, is unlike him for many hours. so there are people that feel that he should do that now we don't know what his situation is you were mentioning earlier i think, that there was some conflicting information on his health today. so there are people that are sort of concerned is he not what the doctors say. because there's, you know, white house is saying one thing doctors are saying another. this would be reassuring to them to see him and hear from him. eric: we heard doctor for the next 48 hours that inflammation situation may be seven days from now would be critical top watch. how does this change in up end his narrative he's been saying on the campaign trail that we've turned a corner on coronavirus now landed him right in the hospital bed what does this do to his major points about this pandemic? >> you're exactly right.
1:39 pm
and you know, i've been talking to people as i mentioned and they're all saying this is just -- , obviously, not good for his health politically also not good because it is the one thing he didn't want to talk about he wants to talk about economy, friday he wanted it to talk about the jobs reports. it wasn't as good as he had hoped. but it was something that he could have talked about. and now it's all about coronavirus and so that plays right into what joe biden is talking about. he wants this to be a referendum on the president and so he's getting that right now. it is hard to talk about anything else. i will say that i did talk to a couple of people who said look, the president can go out there and talk about china some more. you know he's been talking about china. and how they did a bad job and that virus shouldn't have left their shores this will allow him to do that even more. he can talk about it from a personal point of view. so you might hear him also say that. but just sort of on big picture here, the president is very much campaign he's his own spokesperson. his own messager so for him not

question properly. i don't mean where he's physically i mean the fact that he's currently in compromising health. >> right what goes to that point so the key question is, is he of sound mind and sedated if those things are not the case then he is perfectly able to execute his authorities as president. and of course, one of the key ones there is that military command of control in case a crisis arises from what we're seeing right now he's perfectly able to carry on from walter reed. arthel: that's very good. now without, of course, compromising security, can you tell us with backline plan in terms of military readiness, are being complimented as we do wish for the best but you know, we have to prepare for whatever outcome is possible. >> right. and our military forces are prepared at all times around the globe. the key here with the president in the hospital is keeping him
1:47 pm
connected to military commanders if the need arises and we're not seeing that right now. and that is done by this incredible network that is with him at all times he has a military aid. present at all times and there's good precedent should he need to for a brief or even a longer transfer of those executive powers and that's the key in our adversaries know that. they know that u.s. command and control sup and running business as usual. arthel: uh-huh. again i'm going to reemphasize we're pulling for his recovery, diagnosis his prognosis at this point is good. however, as it has been reported doctors say a the next 48 hours are critical. for the sake of this conversation, if the vice president is put in charge, does this make the u.s. appear vulnerable or weakened in eyes of adversaries and especially our enemies?
1:48 pm
>> there's a very direct process if we're doing that and the vice president could either by a formal letter or informally take over if necessary. president rage began transferred briefly and so did president george bush i think our adversaries know it is -- remember the example of boris johnson who did a two week battle with covid back in the spring, and was very successful when beating that. so we've seen the democracies world leaders handle the situation and i think we'll see president trump and if necessary vice president pence handle it no problem. arthel: not just our adversaries but allies what are they thinking? >> right, and you know i think we've seen some expressions of concern from all of them everyone wishes the president well. but one nation that is a little bit taking advantage of this, of course, is china. where their state run newspapers have said some pretty mean things and continue to try to blame the covid outbreak on the u.s. and they've targeted president trump specifically.
quote
1:49 pm
so i'm -- sad to say china will attack propaganda advantage of this as they try to use their covid virus as a symbol that the u.s. is not fit for world leadership. it's bizarre. but we do see china taking some advantage of this crisis already. arthel: i've read report that russia is doing the same. >> you know, i think it's not as clear with russia putin send a message of condolence and i know that nato will be watching carefully because of a lot brewing with russia, belarus black sea azerbaijan so i know u.s. and nato forces will be watching closely adversaries should have absolutely no doubt it is crystal clear u.s. military readiness is 100% u.s. command and control is 100%. arthel: finally what about on the domestic terrorist white supremacist group antigovernment groups could they see this as an opportunity to strike or act out?
1:50 pm
>> it is hard to know what motivates those haters. but again, the key here is right now the president is able to carry out his executive branch duties from walter reed if he has to transfer authority briefly vice president pence is very able to step in and there's a great highly professional group of military officers who are there to ensure that that happens seemlessly at all times 24/7 any time it's needed. arthel: doctor rebecca grant thank you for being here and thank you for your analysis. >> thank you. arthel: thank you. we'll be right back. i'm voting for proposition 19
