>> well, that's exactly right. sorry go ahead, ari. i jumped in there. >> you're 100% right, brian. you know, it's not only that. so much of establishment of washington has stacked this stack. you saw it at the abc town hall, nbc town hall, the people organizing and the debates are cut from the same and what we do know about vice president biden is he does have answers to the questions put up on a teleprompt er for him to read. so how are you going to police that? how do you stop him from doing that? are you going to have debate observers at biden's basement? i mean, there's a lot of problems i don't think the debate commission thought through, plus it may not be necessary the president might be perfectly fine. steve: so sarah, going forward, we don't know exactly what's happening to happen next week let's take a look at what happened last night regarding the debate. did you feel like it was a good range of topics that was fair
5:12 am
and balanced so to speak? >> i do feel like they covered a lot of ground and there was a lot of substance. i think they probably could have taken away a couple topics that you had a bit more exchange between the two candidates but i thought overall they did cover a lot of ground and i thought the vice president did a fantastic job laying out the successes of the trump/pence administration from the previous four years and also, painting a picture of what the next four years would look like. he was very calm, he had total command throughout the debate, and a very substantive and wide- ranging depth on all of the issues that came up. i think people were probably very happy and i would say in some cases, surprised by the depth of knowledge that the vice president had, not just on the topics but also on harris ' record and really held her feet to the fire and called her out a number of times to answer specific questions that she still, by the end of the
5:13 am
night, had not answered. ainsley: so ari, let's play this sound bite of the clash on china that we heard last night and get your reaction on the other side. watch this. >> let's talk about that. the vice president earlier referred to it as part of what he thinks is an accomplishment. the president's trade war with china. he lost that trade war. lost it. >> lost the trade war with china, joe biden never fought it joe biden has been a cheerleader for communist china. we lost 200,000 manufacturing jobs and president obama said they were never coming back. he said we needed a magic wand to bring them back. in our first three years after we cut taxes and unleashed american energy, this administration saw 500,000 manufacturing jobs created. ainsley: ari? >> yeah, i'd laughed last night i thought it was one of the most effective lines when the vice president, vice president pence said joe biden never fought the
5:14 am
war. that was a quick, clever come back, and he's right. look, i come from the part of the republican party that was against tariffs. that's how i was raised, that's everything the politicians i work for believed and when the president announced the tariffs i said i was skeptical but i'd be open-minded let's see what happens. what i've come to the conclusion now is that it takes a bull in a china shop, it takes an outsider like donald trump to deal with china and the establishment politicians joe biden included will never take china on. donald trump is fighting a long term fight to get right our relationship with china, and he's doing it through tariffs. it's one of the few leverage points that we have and he's using it and that's why you have to put up with a bull in a china shop sometimes to get a good policy and i salute the president and i come around and he's the only one that takes on china. brian: i salute sarah because she had to explain that bull in a china shop, you didn't have to you had george bush to talk about guys thanks so much for joining us i appreciate it.
5:15 am
>> you bet. thank you. >> thank you. brian: meanwhile the next presidential debate will be virtual. can you believe this? pete hegseth is here, he's smiling, i don't know about now. find your rhythm. your happy place. find your breaking point. then break it. every emergen-c gives you a potent blend of nutrients so you can emerge your best with emergen-c. whatever road you take, make sure your tires are ready to get you there safely. right now at midas, buy three cooper tires, and get one free. find your tires at midas.com

president trump: i heard that the commission a little while ago changed the debate style, and that's not acceptable to us. maria: well you say you're not going to participate? president trump: i'm not going to waste my time on a virtual debate. that's not what debating is all about you sit behind a computer and debate. that's ridiculous. we learned it the same way you learned it they called up two minutes ago and it was announced and they are trying to protect biden, everybody is. brian: to hear how ticked off he was and that just happened moments ago president trump announcing he will not participate in next week's
5:20 am
presidential debate now that it's virtual here to react fox & friends weekend co-host who spoke to the president two weeks ago pete hegseth. pete, your reaction to the president's reaction? how do they do this without checking with him first? pete: [laughter] i have no idea. there's no way president trump should do a virtual debate, and this is not hard. a couple of negative tests? you're out behind your computer and you're in the studio, in fact brian, i was at the rose garden event, i had a precaution , stayed home last weekend hosting fox & friends i was on skype the entire time. i can't wait to get back into the studio this weekend, because it's always better in-person. it's always more authentic. you can actually challenge people. you can actually answer questions. do you think you're going to get joe biden to answer whether he packed the court via zoom? it's never going to happen. he should definitely not do it if it's virtual. brian: i understand everything you say and i'm likely to agree with you however if the polls are somewhat right and you find yourself trailing do you need this more, even a virtual debate , more than a rally, let's
5:21 am
say, for your political fortunes pete: i'd rather have one good in-person debate, than go down the rabbit trail of virtual debate because once you do one they will want to have the second one that way as well, so say we'll take tests any staff traveling we'll take tests everyone will be negative, we'll make sure everyone is separated all those things, but its got to be in person. i think it's worth throwing down on this one i really do, and understanding the stakes brian it's a good point. brian: i just don't understand why this commission can rationalize making these opinions without checking with the president of the united states and joe biden. they said they found out minutes before. so, pete, we had to change a little bit but i do want to get your take on the vice presidential debate especially this one area. when we were talking about joe biden's foreign policy against president trump's foreign policy , here is the vice president. >> joe biden and kamala harris actually criticized the decision to take out soulemani.
5:22 am
it's really inexplicable but with regard to joe biden, it's explainable. his history records that joe biden actually opposed the rate against osama bin laden. it's absolutely essential that we have a commander-in-chief who will not hesitate to act to protect american lives and to protect american service members and that's what you have in president donald trump. brian: also went back for the iranian deal and the fact that we walked away obviously has spauned this thing called middle east peace and israeli recognition. i was surprised she went there. were you? >> she had to go there because of the topics you could tell how little she knows about it she was effectively barfing up headlines with very shallow knowledge and this is where mike pence was very strong all night and particularly strong here. he knew it. he knew the past. helicopter knew joe biden's been wrong as bob goetz said on every foreign policy issue in the last 50 years and the guys that you're serving with when you go through that first door, when you go through that first door
5:23 am
do you hesitate and stop or do you continue to go in knowing there are bad guys in there? joe biden has hesitated and hesitated and hesitated but not hesitated to make deals with our enemies. president trump has said baghdad i you're gone, isis you're gone, and you have blood on your hands the deal is gone, the chinese, the soft touch you've had from obama, biden for 10 years in the foreign policy establishment, no more. we will have a trade war with you and when joe biden says that trade war is lost? it hasn't even, it's not over. it's ongoing. and if we want to retreat we hand it to them so i thought on foreign policy, mike pence exposed how dangerous a harris/ biden ticket be on foreign policy, and laid out exactly why we have made our friends our friends and our enemies our enemies. brian: pete you and i can talk about this forever but during his reign, joe biden's vice president say, they made islands promised not to militarize them and militarized them. russia being too the ukraine and solidified their grip on georgia
5:24 am
and then flew into syria. they've done none of those aggressive actions except for where they clearly have their hands-on the lever and so is nato is there as well so i just thought it was a dicey thing for him to do and they are talking about foreign policy next, if there was a next, i thought the president could really excell there. pete: i think he will absolutely brian: pete we'll talk to you tomorrow. pete: thanks brian. brian: meanwhile president trump says he will not participate in the virtual debate so where do we go from here? we have a panel here that will answer that question. introducins pain gel. the first full prescription strength non-steroidal anti-inflammatory gel... available over the counter. voltaren is powerful arthritis pain relief in a gel. voltaren. the joy of movement.
5:28 am
president trump: i beat him easily in the first debate according to the polls that i've seen but i beat him easily i felt i beat him easily and i think he felt it too. he wouldn't answer any questions as i beat him in the second debate also, and but i'm not going to do a virtual debate. ainsley: fox news alert this morning president trump furious as the debate commission announces its plans to go virtual in the next week in next week in the second presidential debate. it was planned to be in-person down in miami. here to react our panel fox news contributor tammy bruce, along with democratic former tennessee congressman harold ford jr. , and fox news contributor, deroy murdock, hey, everyone. >> good morning. ainsley: ladies first so tammy
5:29 am
i'll start with you. what's your reaction to this the virtual debate? >> look that was i think many people thought about that depending on the president's condition, clearly his reports have been very good but here is some of the problems with the inventory you'll dynamic. already the commission indicated that they were going to take certain measures to be able to control the president or control the exchange. when you're in-person, and you're there, you know what's going on it's like a live interview. when your virtual and there's elements where you can be cutoff , you can leave the screen , things are beyond your control, you also don't know what the environment is with your opponent, what may be happening there. there are things that can be uncontrollable so there's reasons to not trust how this process proceeds. i, a long time ago, many years ago, stopped second guessing donald trump, and i trust him and his sense of things i think we all should considering the reaction to the last debate and also, by the way, joe biden 's bar is now higher.
5:30 am
there were many different things in that first debate that now he has lost, and i think that it is helpful to him to have certain control against donald trump and this kind of virtual environment i think is unpredictable, and of course, i think if someone had a chance to use it against the president, frankly, they would. ainsley: deroy what do you think , do you think it might be interesting to see a virtual debate but on the other hand, pete hegseth made a really good point in the last segment and he said if we do virtual this time does that mean they will try to do virtual in the last debate too, your thoughts? >> yeah, i'm not sure it'll be all that interesting. do you find zoom calls interesting? i don't find them all that interesting. there's a certain personal dye am ic about being in the same room with somebody else you can notice facial expressions, voice patterns these people calm or nervous what the have you they could be on the same stage far apart and put plexiglass between them like we saw with the vice president and kamala harris last night. there is also the question if he's in his basement will he be
5:31 am
using a teleprompter and have people in the background giving him hand signals? if they are going to do this and be in different locations at a bare minimum each campaign should have people from the opposite campaign there, to make sure that the thing is honest. ainsley: absolutely. >> i was quite shocked that the commission basically announced this without talking to either campaigns ahead of time, it was totally inappropriate. ainsley: the president said he thinks the commission is doing this to help biden. do you trust the commission, do you trust the process? >> well first off again good morning and thanks for having me on. we should all put this in context. no one likes the world we're living in right now and the way we have to communicate with people and our kids go to school and even how broadcast and cable tv is having to operate. we have to do it differently largely because we have a pandemic and frankly, president trump has covid, so this is why this is happening. now the president oftentimes complains about how he's treated unfairly, and you have to remember he is the president and he has a helicopter, a plane. he has the white house, he's
5:32 am
able to get the best doctors so i agree with what deroy just said. you got to find ways to ensure there's fairness, if the opposing campaigns want to put people with the other candidates to make sure they aren't the nefarious things some are suggesting it could happen they should do that. i think the debate commission has been responsible, they've been smart. i don't know why they didn't call the candidates but it's ultimately their decision and they are an independent bipartisan group that's the rules for these debates and i hope those candidates will participate the country deserves to hear from them. ainsley: tammy what was your takeaway from last night? >> well, i was waiting to see what would happen. i was a little concerned that vice president's approach usually, of course as it was last night, very nice, very steady approach, and we saw that how you can have with that steady approach, you can make some really hard-hitting points so i was happening to see that. i was not surprised to see ms. harris have some trouble she had not debated a republican
5:33 am
i think in a couple of decades and the democrats realized she be remembered for what she did to kavanaugh. that same kind of smug, smirking framework that is not a good look on men or women. it's not something americans or regular people like, and i think that hurt her considerably but it hurt her in the primaries , and it hurt her in her own debates and i think it's one of the reasons why the democrats were not impressed her during that process. ainsley: harold what withs your takeaway? >> i thought it didn't change much. i think both sides appeal to their base. i thought the interesting points from kamala harris was the fact that one out of five american businesses won't come back and we probably do have done, should have donald were able to do more earlier on this pandemic and vice president asked the question about packing the courts with democrats. i am a democrat we'll have to answer that question better than what was answered last night. ainsley: what would you have done differently in january in the early days?
5:34 am
>> well i would have told the country i would have leveled with the country and begun the process of the defense production act to ensure we would have to import everything from paper towels to prescription drugs in china. as much as i heard vice president pence say how strong they've been in china we've got the pandemic from china. as much as they'd like to talk how strong, we still don't have enough paper towels and ppe in this nation we're looking to china to produce it that should change and i wish that point was made last night by senator harris. ainsley: deroy what was your takeaway? >> it was a very substantial debate. we got a lot of information we'll learn a number of things that the biden-harris ticket is committed to getting rid of the tax cuts and jobs act on day one and that will get rid of all of the tax cuts including those enjoyed by something like 80% of households and benefits from that particular measure as congressman ford said on the supreme court, kamala harris refused to say whether or not they want to pack the court that leaves me to think they might have something to hide which is
5:35 am
why they do want to pack the court and also on fracking they want to be fracking, but we've heard over and over and over again, statements by both the vice president and kamala harris saying they want to end fracking or limit it, reduce it dramatically and that's going to be very bad for american energy independence and the american economy overall. ainsley: tammy, harold, deroy thank you so much for joining us still ahead, senator ted cruz and pete buttigieg are going to join us live, next. a woman who was young had covid-19.
5:36 am
i remember her because she had a bracelet that had the names of her children. she asked me, 'doctor, am i going to be okay?' and i could not give her the answer that i wanted to give her. there is no excuse for why we don't have this under control at this point. joe biden listens to medical experts. he actually has a plan that does the things that we should have been doing many months ago. and joe biden is not going to let his ego get in the way of fighting the disease. ff pac is responsible for the content of this ad. that life of the party look walk it off look one more mile look reply all look own your look... ...with fewer lines. there's only one botox® cosmetic. it's the only one... ...fda approved... ...to temporarily make frown lines... ...crow's feet... ...and forehead lines... ...look better. the effects of botox® cosmetic, may spread hours to weeks after injection, causing serious symptoms. alert your doctor right away as difficulty swallowing, speaking, breathing, eye problems, or muscle weakness may be a sign of a life-threatening condition.

president trump: look forward to doing the rallies, i heard that the commission a little while ago changed the debate style and that's not acceptable to us. i beat him easily in the first debate. i'd beat him in the second debate also, and but i'm not going to do a virtual debate. maria: you're saying you're not going to participate?
5:40 am
president trump: no i'm not going to waste my time on a virtual debate. that's not what debating is all about. steve: okay this is breaking news in the last one hour about an hour ago the commission said given the fact that the president currently has covid, next thursday's debate between the two presidential candidates be virtual. you just heard the president say "i'm not going", joe biden says he will go. the campaign of president trump has already said look, by that time, he could have had two negative tests, that's crazy. the president instead will hold a rally. that's where we are at 8:40 in the morning let's bring in texas republican senator ted cruz, member of the senate judiciary committee and author of the great new book called "one vote away, how a single supreme court seat can change history" which debuted at number nine on the new york times best seller list. congratulations, senator. >> well thank you. it's good to be with you again, thanks for having me. steve: good to have you so what do you make of the fact that the president says i'm not going to, if they are doing a virtual
5:41 am
debate, that's not a real debate i'm not going. >> look i think the president's right on this , and unfortunately, i think this is a pattern we've seen play out throughout the debates, where the moderators and the debate commission have behaved like arms of the joe biden campaign. i think the first debate chris wallace did a terrible job moderating. last night i think susan page did a better job moderating and she didn't interrupt as much but her questions were still, you know, it's an interesting hypothetical to go back and look at the questions she asked, and ask how would the questions have read differently, had they been written by the joe biden campaign? and that virtually every question out of her mouth was from the left, with all of the assumptions joe biden and the democrats believed. there was really very little pushing on the other side. this decision here, to hold a virtual debate. that benefits joe biden, that
5:42 am
lets his staff be in the room. that lets him receive assistance one of the real concerns a lot of people have is if joe biden is even up to it and if you insulate him and let him do the debate from the basement, that's eliminating the debate aspect of it and listen i think the reason the commission did this is the democrats right now think they're winning. they believe joe biden's winning i think they're very happy for joe not to leave his basement for another minute between now and election day and if the commission sticks to we're going to do it virtually i think the president is right to say i'm not going to participate in this charade. ainsley: just to defend chris wallace he's part of our family and it's not easy to debate to moderate a debate, and i've watched other moderators say, sometimes when you're up there on stage all the time when you're up on stage, and you're in charge of asking the questions, you see something different than what the audience is seeing at home and it's a difficult situation, i thought chris did a fine job, and he's one of our friends and he's part
5:43 am
of our family, ted cruz. >> i understand. ainsley: i just wanted to clarify that because we love him so as far as court packing is concerned, she didn't answer the question, and joe biden didn't answer the question a week and a half ago, so i think we have that sound bite watch this. >> are you and joe biden going to pack the court if judge amy c oney barrett is confirmed? >> the american people are voting right now and it should be their decision. >> they'd like to know if you and joe biden are going to pack the supreme court if you don't get your way in this nomination. >> let's talk about packing. fifty people who president trump appointed to the court of appeals for a lifetime appointments, not one is black. >> i just want the record to reflect she never answered the question. ainsley: so does that mean they're definitely going to pack the court? >> unquestionably, and they don't want to admit it because they know it polls badly and they know it shows they are
5:44 am
engaging in a left wing power grab. ainsley: sorry to interrupt you, will you remind the audience why that is so important for our country if they pack the court how dangerous could that be? >> well, the court for 150 years has had nine justices. if you come in and the democrats and a partisan power grab increase it from nine to 11 or to 13, it turns the court into just another partisan body. it turns it into a football and it also starts the process of escalation. look if the democrats take it to 11, what it means is a practical matters the next time the republicans take the majority, we take it to 13 and it just starts escalating. the framers envision the supreme court as having independence as judicial body that followed the law and followed the constitution. it's not meant to be a political body. you know, we've seen a democratic president try to do this . fdr tried to pack the court and his own party said no that's too
5:45 am
much it be bad for the court and the country and justice ruth bader ginsburg before she died she was asked about packing the court and she said nine seem s like a good number it was a mistake when fdr tried to do it and it be a mistake now and justice ginsburg was right and joe and kamala just reminded me of that exchange on fracking also where they are trying to hide from the american people what their radical agenda is, and i think mike pence did an excellent job last night. i think he was calm, he was cool , he was collected he was focused on the substance and i think mike clearly won the debate last night. brian: i'll tell you what senator the other thing that came um is the breonna taylor case controversial to say the least we don't know all of the facts but the grand jury did and they came up with a verdict and the district attorney, the attorney general spoke about it. were you surprised that a former attorney general would come out against that verdict? >> no because it's consistent,
5:46 am
the democratic party right now is demagoguing on race and trying to inflame racial tensions and listen what happened to breonna taylor was horrible. she was an innocent woman who was killed and now it's not clear that the police did so on purpose. sometimes horrible accidents happen, i mean, they were executing a lawful warrant and were being fired upon, and they fired back, but that's an answer that has too much nuance and detail for today's democrats. any time there is a shooting involving the cops, where they go is demagogue, and i think that's consistent with the pattern and i will say this. kamala is a talented communicator. i think her answer on that and a number of other things had a lot of raw emotion and it had a real power to it and i think i don't think we should underestimate that. i also think though, a lot of her answers were very rehearsed
5:47 am
and where that came across, most clearly, was where she said repeatedly i'm speaking, i'm speaking, and it's clear, she practiced that frankly to prepare for being interrupted like president trump did in the first debate, and had it been someone aggressively interrupting that would have worked pretty well, as it was, mike pence is a pretty mild-map per guy and it looked wildly disproportion at. >> [laughter] >> i'm speaking like a ticked off first grader. steve: senator ted cruz we thank you very much. check out his new book called " one vote away" available everywhere. >> thank you very much and the book is number one on amazon best sellers right now. i think you'll enjoy it. steve: good job, sir. meanwhile what does former mayor pete buttigieg think of the decision to make the next presidential debate virtual? we're going to talk to him, live but first let's talk to sandra
5:48 am
smith live with what happens on the channel in 12 minutes. >> sandra: president trump breaking news moments ago saying he will not waste his time in debating virtually joe biden next week, reacting just moments after the debate commission announced that it would go virtual for the second presidential debate for safety reasons. brand new reaction coming up. plus mike pence, kamala harris battling it out on the debate stage last night a look back at some of the key moments from both candidates, and brand new numbers on the economy, larry kudlow will join us live. we will see you live, top of the hour. - i'm norm. - i'm szasz. [norm] and we live in columbia, missouri. we do consulting, but we also write. [szasz] we take care of ourselves constantly; it's important. we walk three to five times a week, a couple miles at a time. - we've both been taking prevagen for a little more than 11 years now. after about 30 days of taking it, we noticed clarity that we didn't notice before. - it's still helping me. i still notice a difference.
5:52 am
president trump: they are trying to protect biden, everybody is. i think that i'm better to a point and i feel better than i did i jokingly said 20 years ago , i feel perfect. i'm the leader, and i can't be like biden where i hang out in a basement every day. sure if i wanted to hang out in a basement i wouldn't catch it but i meet a lot of people and i have to i'm the president of the country. i can't hang around in a basement. steve: fox news alert president obama t outraged over next week 's plan announced on the presidential debate and joe biden announces he will be there former democratic presidential candidate pete buttigieg helped kamala harris prepare for last night's debate. he's also the author of the new
5:53 am
book, called "trust" and he joins us right now from salt lake. mayor pete good morning to you. >> good morning thanks for having me on. steve: you bet and there's your book right there. so what do you make of the president saying if it's going to be virtual, it's not worth my time. >> well it's too bad. i don't know why the president won't participate in a debate. all of us have had to get used to virtual formats, right? parents are, you know, having to deal with e-learning which in some cases, is not what we're used to, well is always not what we're used to. we're having to take meetings over zoom. it's not something i think most of us enjoy but it's a safety measure, and i think part of why the u.s. is falling behind is badly behind the rest of the developed world on dealing with the pandemic is because every time there's been a choice between doing something in a way that's more safe or less safe, this president seems to push for less safe. i think it's also a reflection of the weakness of his campaign, when you see campaigns getting the kind of bad news that he's been getting through this month,
5:54 am
a lot of times you'll see these kinds of increased arguments overrules, withdrawing from opportunities, a little bit of flailing there and it's too bad because i think the more the american people can hear two candidates side by side even if it's virtual the better. of course the only reason we're here in the first place is that the president of the united states is still contagious as far as we know with a deadly disease which reflects the overall problem, and i don't know why you'd want to be in a room with other people if you were contagious with a deadly disease and you care about other people. steve: sure. >> maybe the president doesn't care about other people. steve: and the campaign, mayor pete, had said by then, he could have had a couple of negative tests we don't know at that point. it's all speculation, but let's talk a little bit about the debate last night. you prepared kamala harris. she seemed she well prepared. i understand you, in practicing, where you played mike pence, you threw every curve ball you could at her to get her ready. how did you get that fly to land
5:55 am
on his head? >> [laughter] i'll tell you that was the one thing that we weren't prepared for and you know, i was in the hall so i didn't even see it and it goes to show the difference between the experience and the energy where you're in the hall, and what gets the most attention on tv. i don't know who sent that fly in. i hope the fly is okay. steve: the fly has a twitter account now. mayor pete one thing that people are buzzing about today is why wouldn't she answer the question -- >> see what you did there? steve: why wouldn't she answer the question, will biden/harris move to pack the court? >> so i think what you're see ing is an effort to use that to distract from a much more immediate issue in front of us. look the american people believe that the winner of this election should choose the next supreme court justice, and senator harris and joe biden and for that matter, i, agree with the majority of the american people that that be the right thing to do. i mean remember we're not just talking about an election coming
5:56 am
up. we're talking about an election underway something like 5 million americans have already voted, and you know, there are real consequences to this. the affordable care act case is hitting the court in a matter of weeks. if it gets struck down pre- existing coverage gone. we just saw two conservative justices, justices alito and thomas i believe write a document where between the lines you can tell they want to overturn marriage equality. you had senator cruz on before his book is about the difference that one vote can make on the supreme court. my marriage exists by one vote on the supreme court. we've got some really important immediate things at stake right now in a debate coming before the senate in a matter of days, and we want to make sure that efforts to distract from that don't succeed, because this is one of the most important things that americans are voting on, when they're voting on who the next president is going to be. steve: sure we've had a number of guests from both side of the aisle this morning talking

about what they thought their representative, how well they did. what do you think kamala harris was particularly effective at last night? >> well i thought she was terrific. she was able to repeatedly hold vice president pence and donald trump accountable for their failures to protect the american people from the coronavirus. the fact that the vp is in charge of the task force and we're doing the worst of any country in the developed world. i also appreciated that she stood up for american troops. the president of the united states calling those who served suckers and losers saying he didn't understand what's in it for them while he was standing on the ground of -- steve: right but mayor pete you know the president has said -- knows what section 60 means. and the way he talked about folks like john mccain. steve: i hated to interrupt you but you know the president has denied that particular story? >> right but we know he's lying because even in the middle of -- steve: how do we know he's lying
5:58 am
>> well because part of his denial was he said i never called john mccain a loser and anybody with twitter can go see he did so to see he was lying in that part of his sentence but not another part this was a guy back when he was a wealthy young man in new york born to privilege thought to himself i'm going to let some sucker go to vietnam in my place and pretended to be disabled. if you really believe the president now on this kind of stuff, i've got a bridge to sell you. steve: all right do you think it has been an effective strategy and i know your side says that biden harris is ahead in the polls, for mr. biden and senator harris not to really speak to the press? i know when you were running for president, you know, you talked to all of the reporters every day. you think this is an effective strategy going forward? >> well of course, they are doing press, they are doing it in a way that's consistent with safety and consistent with the campaign strategy. obviously, it's a winning strategy in the sense that our campaign is winning and i think, you know, the really remarkable

thing happening now is how many republicans are coming to endorse joe biden? i think we're up to two former chairs of the rnc now and folks like cindy mccain really laying out the fact that you can either be a john mccain republican or you can be a donald trump republican. you got to pick one or the other, so, you know in terms of the coalition that's growing the democrats, the independents, and remarkable number of republicans all coming together saying they want joe biden to be the next president, i'd say this strategy is working pretty well. but we're not taking anything for granted, pushing hard, you'll see the president and the vice president joe biden and kamala harris traveling to swing states and campaigning safely because they respect the health and safety of those around them, but campaigning in-person as much as they safely can, to make sure we take no vote for granted. steve: all right, mayor pete buttigieg, once upon a time the mayor of south bend, indiana , ran for president, sir, thank you very much for joining
