>> it is a great day for science, a great day for humanity when you realize your vaccine has a 90% effectiveness. we should be able to have 50 million this year, 1.3 billion next year. >> groundbreaking announcement in the fight against kim jong un for. results show pfizer's coronavirus vaccine is at least 90% effective. what does it mean moving forward. the author of coronavirus made easy joins me. thanks for being here. >> thanks for having me. >> we are excited to talk about this but i want you to explain what this news means to you and when we could perhaps see emergency use authorization. >> pfizer is a trusted brand so
1:16 am
to release this information i'm cautiously optimistic about it. we have to see with medical data shows. they only issued this in a press release so far but i have concerns about the politics involved in this, several things. to begin with, whether it is a vaccine or any preventative tool you have to tested in certain ways. think about something different like mosquito repellent, you would try it on people in tropical climate, some people get the mosquito repellent, some people don't and when a certain number of people get sick you compare the two groups, some get mosquito bites. if nobody gets mosquito bites you are not in the right area and if everybody gets mosquito bites then it doesn't work. in this case pfizer had a set number of people they were waiting for to get sick before they could do the analysis, but what happened was they waited a little longer than that. 30 more people, the delay in reporting the results whether purposeful or not is unclear but
1:17 am
what will happen is people on the trump side, the trump supporters may have an issue with the vaccine because all these results were released after the election rather than before and trump was promoting the vaccine. >> the politics part of this conversation is what people are talking about, but i want a medical perspective of what this means for us, lehman out here wondering when we could potentially see a vaccine for everyone. >> sure. exactly. this is the first step, to find out how effective it is and there will be issues in terms of checking in a large number of people in ramping up in terms of production. pfizer and another company which should help in terms of that issue but then we have an issue
1:18 am
of distribution because this particular vaccine candidate needs to be stored at a cold temperature so for people -- extremely cold temperature. for people at home you can be optimistic that there are logistical issues that have to be sorted out for example how will it be transported, how will it be stored, how it will be administered to the american people and how much it will cost. there are issues in terms of who gets it first not just in this country but across the globe. hopefully we can have it by spring but there are a lot of factors that need to be ironed out. anthony fauci said moderna have a similar vaccine, the results should be in soon, we could see more than one vaccine that is effective which would be great news. he also said we could have doses for people by the end of november or the beginning of summer. we are hopeful for that. thank you. appreciate it.
1:19 am
as vaccine progress continues, one democrat is already politicizing it. >> the bad news is it is two months before joe biden takes over and that means this administration will be implementing a vaccine plan. >> the growing backlash over governor cuomo's comments and joe biden says he will rejoin the world health organization on day one. gordon chang on whether or not that is the right move coming up next. to james, from james. that's just what i wanted. is this a new buick? i secret santa-ed myself. i shouldn't have. but i have been very good this year. wow! wow! wow! this year, turn black friday into buick friday all month long. now during buick friday, pay no interest for 84 months on most 20-20 buick suv models.

1:24 am
chinese leaders think about it is not official but on something as important as this is propagating the official line. >> getting to the pandemic, we are talking about the new pfizer announcement, donald trump froze funding to the world health organization because he felt the who was favoring china, joe biden is saying on day one he wants to rejoin the who so what does this mean? is at the right call? what does it mean for the american people? >> president-elect biden is not making the right call because the who with its current leadership is not reform a bowl. in january the who propagated china's false narrative that coronavirus was not readily contagious, this was at a time when senior who doctors knew that it was. also who helped china pressure countries not to impose travel
1:25 am
restrictions and quarantines from china and those travelers spread the disease beyond china's borders. chinese leaders took actions they knew or had to know would spread the disease around the world and who helped them do that. >> certainly looking forward to working with president-elect joe biden. let's take a listen. >> it is time to forge new cooperation, health and well-being at the center of our common future. jillian: fast-forward to six months from now if we are part of this. what does it look like for the american people? >> looks like we are in an organization which china controls. i can understand rejoining who if we bargained with the organization to make substantial changes including get rid of the director general but if you are joining on day one you give up

your leverage so this is a horrible decision because the who is partly responsible for the deaths of 238,000 americans. this is a horrific decision on the part of the president-elect. jillian: other foreign affairs news the secretary-general posted a tweet, warmly welcoming president-elect biden, i warmly welcomed the election of joe biden as the next president of the united states, strong supporter of nato and the transatlantic relationship. he got other foreign nations to pay more for their defense. do you think under president-elect biden we will start footing the bill or? >> i think what we will see is
1:27 am
countries like germany will continue to not meet their commitment to spend 2% of the gross mystic product on defense. one of the important things during the trump administration was getting countries that were lagging to spend more for their defense. if you take the pressure off and that is what is going to happen, germany's angela merkel will say i'm going to continue to not spend and make america foot the bill. this is a concern and i hope the biden administration will do more as the trump administration did in getting nato to pay for the common defense. >> it seems if your adversary is happy about a certain political development in your country it is probably not the best thing. we appreciate it. 27 after the are. moderate democrats warning the party about going too far left. >> 70 million americans who didn't think our democratic policies would be good for them

1:31 am
>> i'm a proud moderate conservative democrat. this country wants moderation. this country, you and your life, run your business from the middle, not from the trenches and that is where i've always been so for whatever the message was it was wrong for this many people to be split, first not to be able to have a message that doesn't scare the jesus out of people and when you talk about deal and all the socialism that is not who we are as the democratic party, not how i was raised.
1:32 am
but yet we've been tagged for all the crazy stuff and i'm not. >> democrats claiming aoc in the far left of the party for election might losses. and now, the democratic divide. you just heard it. moderate democrats are upset about losing house races they should have won, they blame far left policies. is congresswoman alexandria ocasio cortez's response. >> in the house caucus there are very deep divisions in the party, we have come out swinging, not 48 hours after tuesday, we don't even have solid data yet, pointing fingers and telling each other what to do, it deepens the division in the party and it is irresponsible. >> he says moderate democrats are not being helpful. with your response? >> there are not supposed to be
1:33 am
helpful. this is clearly a fight that is going to happen within the democratic party. understand what aoc is saying, let's look at the numbers, let's see how things fleshed out but the reality of it is donald trump was able to run back to back to back ads about socialism in florida and it did make a difference. moderates feel their voices have been drowned out as well. i also don't think it is fair for a moderate to say they are not progressive in their state because it's not just their state. this is an issue that is deeply divided in the democratic party but also moderates are considering the fact that this country is split between republicans and democrats. no matter what progressive policy joe biden is on board with, one or 2 here or there, he responded to the moderate democrats, democrats in the center and he will govern as
1:34 am
such and if progressives don't like it you win. you run candidates in went up and down the ballot. >> let's take a look at this, a piece of the new york times article, aoc says she might quit politics. i'm serious when i tell people the odds of me running for higher office and just going off trying to start a homestead somewhere, probably the same. i don't even know if i want to be in politics. interesting she said she doesn't even know she wants to be in politics. a lot of people are fighting a big fight right now in this country politically, look at how the democrats lost a lot of seats in the house and the selection has been so close and a lot of democrats what that is a bit of a failure. >> of ceased says she's series let me say i'm serious when i say this, no one is going to big anybody to stay. if you have not been called for
1:35 am
this work you are simply in the way. this is not about a career. this is about those called and willing to stand on principle regardless what side of the oil you are on, there's something i still can't -- call consequences of consciousness. if you don't have the ability to stand after two years because it is getting rough maybe you are not called for the job. that's not on her and personally but anybody. this is not some game. i remember her saying she was from brooklyn and tough. where is brooklyn at? stand up for what you believe in and fight for it? it doesn't come to anybody easily. she believes in these issues and i recommend she either fight or have a seat. that plain and simple because he went away. >> they want to know you are fighting for them. >> that could be something that in two years her opponent could run against, her saying she's not sure she wants to be there. >> absolutely. i would for sure. it is not just about her. i play this all the time. i look for allies on front-line soldiers, i look for those were willing to lay it all on the line and do what they believe in. her or anybody else in the party
1:36 am
that cannot take the heat they simply need to get out of the kitchen. maybe she was just talking randomly. don't know she's serious or not but i don't -- we want you to stay, go ahead and go. if you are not cut out for this go ahead and go. >> joe biden's victory speech on saturday, he said he wants to unify with republicans and democrats, to be a president for all people. >> i pledge to you via president who seeks not to divide but unify. let this grim era of demonization in america begin to end here and now. >> reporter: do you think he will be able to do that with kamala harris and his vice president who has the most progressive record in the senate and aoc also saying she wants to push joe biden to make more progressive decisions and bernie sanders?
1:37 am
>> let me say this again. joe biden is a moderate. he's in the center. aoc doesn't control joe biden, vice president-elect senator harris does not control joe biden, she will be serving at the pleasure of the president so you can push all day long but nobody's going to push joe biden to do anything but joe biden has not done for the last 47 years. bernie sanders sure as hell won't, bernie sanders knows who joe biden is. is governed with this man for 50 years so you can continue to push the policies but joe biden is very interested in uniting this country, some say he is republican light. i call him moderate but he's not progressive. i don't believe it happens. he was there to take out trump, because they wanted to get rid of donald trump and that was his job. he had one job to do and he did it. jillian: that is music to some
