i'm pete hegseth and i'm honored to be your host for the evening. it's been a year no one could have predicted and many want to get rid of, but unlike so many other things, you cannot put a lock down on patriotism. selfishly, this jacket right here has been waiting for this night for the last 364 days. red, white and blue inside and out. tonight we are honoring the heroic, the courageous, the brave and the everyday patriot that make this country so special. tonight we honor the real 1% of america. this is an awards show unlike any other. no self-important actors, just selfless service. this is a worthy cause, a great cause. tonight it's for you, for us, for america. >> [indiscernible]. >> firefighters described this as a very chaotic scene, flames and smokea pouring out of that third story apartment and it actually credit the residents here for saving the lives of two young children. >> it was chaotic. everything happened so fast. >> as i was entering the parking lot i kind of see fire from the building. >> medially after that, i seen our rush of smoke come across me. >> there was a lady screaming that there was kids in there. my first instinct was to get us out of the house, so i kicked the door in. i started yelling like "come o out, come out," trying to get the attention of anybody inside the apartment and then i heard a scream inside the apartment, i saw a roxy and i was able to pick her up and get out of there. >> it was literally tunnel vision. i didn't see anything but the balcony was fire and then eventually the boy who got

thrown out. >> throw the baby now! ♪ >> rachel is our oldest and with being the oldest, she was the one that the kids looked up to a lot. >> when she brought him to the balcony, she could have jumped with him. this young woman was on fire when she turned around and went back in after her daughter. ♪ >> god put both of those men ind just the right position at just the right time. they immediately became family and they alwaysen will be.

>> joining me now from fire station 60 in phoenix, arizona, philip and r taney and alexander. congratulations on being honored with this year's award for heroism, you certainly deserve it.] >> thank you, i appreciate it. >> thank you very much. >> your stories are inspiring. philip, you're a marine and a former college football player. how do you think that played a role in the way you unquestionably, aerobically responded that day. >> discipline to help me lot. just being in the right mind-set, that plays a part. just having the will to help. i'm always in the mood to help somebody, so i'm just thankful god placed me in the right place at the right time to make that catch, to save a life. >> d'artagnan, you ran into the building that was on fire without even knowing if there was anyone inside to save. it has to be clear you had no protective gear, no fire training. what was going through your mind the moment you made this decision to go inside?

bravery and leadership ensuring all soldiers [indiscernible]. the army commendation medal. >> captain john kline joined the minnesota national guard in 2011. >> i've never had a commander like him. our mission is to provide aviation support to [indiscernible] to support iraq and securityrt forces to -- we e very good at knowing if you take care of the guys, they are going to take care of the mission. ♪ >> john klein is my husband and he has been employed overseas. this year has been very hectic. i was pregnant with our third child. we were super excited to welcome another baby boy. and we knew that he wasn't going to be home for that. >> how are you doing,me buddy? love you!

i know there's a lot of other families, a lot of other soldiers that serve as well so i'm going to accept this on behalf of every single soldier that serves on my team. you know, our success over there wouldn't o be without the [indiscernible] and everybody else. >> pete, what a beautiful reunion. here in hudson, wisconsin, it was truly heartwarming to see this family back together again. >> welcome home, captain klein. now to our next award. at one for the people who support our military. if the award for service tory veterans. please welcome dana perino and jasper, looking dapper this evening. >> jasper and i are thrilled to be resenting this next award. he picked out the talks and even dressed himself buried in all seriousness, i know you know i love my dog. he is loyal, intelligent, and always knows when i'm having a bad day. our next recipient, mary peter, is harnessing those same animal instincts to help others through canine partners for patriots, an organization allowing veterans and active-duty military

suffering from trauma to train their own servicedu dogs. there is a look at all the lives she's changed. ♪ >> this program saved my life. i tried to kill myself before i came. >> before i came in i was on a handful of different medications. ptsd, pain meds. >> this organization that mary has allowed me to accomplish a ton of goals that i never thought was going to even be possible. >> i came up all those medications just by getting out and moving around withho my dogn training with my dog. i was able to overcome those things. ♪ >> it saved my life, it saved my marriage, it saved my relationship with my children. i was actually the first veteran into this program. i am now the ceo.

♪ >> the first thing i did was give them all a hug to let them know that they mattered. i see them coming here severely damaged in some ways. it's giving them a chance at life. >> joining me now from brooksville florida is mary peters. congratulations and from my heart, thank you for your dedication to helping veterans in need. tell us a little bit about this mission to reduce veteran suicide and why it means so much to you. >> i just have seen so many veterans that came to me just searching for help.am i know that with the dogs that i would be able to help them and for all that they've done to serve our country and all that they've suffered when they came back, it was the least that i could do. it was the right thing to do. >> what motivates you to keep going? w i know that you left a profitable business to invest

sidney watson thank you for your service and congratulations. pete, back to you. >> our next category is brand-new this year. it's inspiring. it shows us the kind of citizen, laura ingraham joins us to give out our first ever young patriot award. >> small but mighty, tyler stallings is on a big mission to save our nation's homeless vets. he's been doing so since he was four years old. how can that be? raising more than a hundred thousand dollars in the process, making him this year's young patriot. here is his story. >> we need to remember the veterans every, every day. when i was four i saw homeless veterans on the street and i wanted to build houses but

that was not financially possible so we decided to give back to veterans. >> it was something that he didn't understand. if people put their lives on the live and serve our country, why would they be homeless. i thought it over and i asked him, i said tyler, let's think about something you could do we did a lot of work putting these items together. he talked to managers to see if anyone could help. i'm very proud of him for not being afraid to speak up. >> thank you tyler. >> thank you, goodbye.

than just being angry and that's what i chose to do. i chose to do a day of prayer and thanks to our police officers. >> there's overwhelming support for a colorado coffee shop owner after thieves stole his thin blue line flag and vandalized his building. >> over 2000 people showed up and then we helped and everybody was so happy and so supportive, and so grateful to be there. my phone was blowing up, my community donated a ton of money. >> it's so thoughtful. thank you so much. i felt it upon me to it donate that money to the brotherhood for the fallen, an organization that helps families that lost their loved ones. i fly the thin blue line flag because i want them to know those people out there that
