thankful for, donald trump thinker on a virus vaccine deliveries to front-line workers and senior citizens may start as soon as next week. jillian: this as astrazeneca reported a mistake in its coronavirus vaccine trial. joining us to react, doctor debbie, good morning. you hear coronavirus vaccine and mistake and people rightfully get nervous. what happened with astrazeneca? >> they had it with their data, a group of people got a lower dose of the vaccine then they were supposed to come half the dose and they did really well, they did better than some of the folks who got the full dose of the vaccine. in terms of the efficacy of the vaccine it seems it is still good but the problem is why was this not disclosed earlier or discovered earlier? the problem is more related to transparency.
1:32 am
it is not something where anybody had a major negative consequence from the vaccine but on the other hand because of this they may need to continue the trial longer or do more research before they get fda approval. todd: astrazeneca spokesperson saying the trial is under the highest standards and more analysis being done to refine the efficacy reading, this comes as that announcement about vaccine delivery next week, how significant was that announcement yesterday? >> it is great news. there are so many vaccine candidates, pfizer and moderna are leading, the fact that astrazeneca has been issue should not affect pfizer and modernable to has nothing to do with their studies or applications so for the general public this is great news that
1:33 am
those vaccines are on track and people should start getting these doses relatively soon. we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. a third candidate with astrazeneca would be great as well. more options people have, the more people get vaccinated sooner so this is a stumbling block in terms of being able to have as many options but doesn't actually taint the pfizer or moderna vaccine. >> a little bit of good, little bit of bad news. doctor anthony fauci had comments post-thanksgiving covid-19 surge. >> one thing we do not want is if we get a surge over thanksgiving we will have that slope up plateau and slow bump again in three weeks, the reason we are trying so hard to get the message for people to be careful.
1:34 am
>> despite the lockdowns a lot of families got together yesterday, probably still together right now. do you expect a surge in cases in a few weeks? >> we probably will. the fact is when people come together there is the possibility of spreading the virus, there is a 14 day incubation period. in 3 to 5 days, it could take longer. two weeks where people are starting to develop symptoms you see a surge been but more than that in this two weeks they might come into contact with other people so you see another surge upon a surge. we might see hospitalizations and deaths and misfortune around the christmas holiday, hanukkah, new year but there are steps people can take to protect themselves, things like masks, handwashing and keeping your distance from others but hopefully everybody had a happy thanksgiving.
1:35 am
todd: you talk about people coming into contact on black friday people will go out and shop and be in the vicinity of others. do you have some tips for them? >> it is important we support our businesses. our businesses have been suffering, employees working for them. the main thing is to avoid crowds because the closer you come into contact with people the more chance of respiratory droplets and the virus. generally the mask and the handwashing and hand sanitizer, if you can avoid areas with crowds and do your shopping online that would be great or curbside delivery, curbside pickup or delivery, those are other options. if you go to the store if you can limit the time you spend in stores that would be better, at least you know what you are going to get that would be good.
1:36 am
there are risks wherever you go but if you're going to an outdoor mall it might be better than indoor because of ventilation and on top of that if you notice the stores taking precautions like temperatures, the number of people inside the store, being cautious in terms of what they are doing offering hand sanitizer perhaps you can have more confidence in that store then a different one. >> thank you very much. jillian: pope francis praises medical workers on the coronavirus frontlines, the pontiff writing in a new york times op-ed, quote, they are the saints next door who have awakened something important in our hearts make incredible once more what we desire to instill in our preaching, he then criticized those protesting coronavirus restrictions saying looking to the common good is
