12:01 pm
relationship with mrs. fang? anything in general? congressman swalwell? >> bill: ear buds work. millions of americans have been out of work for months. can lawmakers get a deal done in maybe. howie kirtz on how the media is covering this. we begin with brett bear. the hunter biden store gives a little bit every day, like a drip drip if you want to make that case. where is it now, bret? >> there's an investigation ongoing. we know it's broader than just taxes. it's overseas business dealings. there's calls on capitol hill to try to find out exactly what is happening. what we know is that the attorney general has set the table that this investigation is going to keep going. and the question is, whether the calls for a special counsel up on capitol hill are necessary or
12:02 pm
not. how the doj under a biden administration is going to handle something as sensitive as investigating the president's son. >> bill: this transition period is hitting a disruption like 2016. back then it was russia russia and never materialized. johnson, republican from wisconsin, on our program yesterday said this is the critical reason why this needs to find its way toward a conclusion or an answer. senator johnson. >> i'm concerned based on the fbi's investigation and hillary clinton's e-mail scandal which we investigation, it was an investigation designed to cover up the truth and exonerate hillary clinton. i need to be assured that's not the case with this u.s. attorney in delaware. we need a thorough investigation. we need equal justice in this country and that's something that comey fbi and parts of the department of justice under obama we didn't have.
12:03 pm
>> bill: on the last point, we don't know how that will play out just yet. we have bread crumbs on the trail. we don't know, do we, bret? >> no, we don't. we assume that this investigation has been ongoing since 2018 when we know it started. and that it has really not stopped even though it wasn't public. there was the covert time and now the overt time. the question is, what happens when the next administration gets in? obviously the coverage has been different. the disparity of coverage before the election and when it comes out that he's being federally investigated, finally other news media outlets had to cover it. >> bill: we'll get to howie kirtz in a moment on that. meantime, democrats have a battle on their own hands. alexandria ocasio-cortez was asked about democratic leadership. the answer is intriguing. roll it. >> are you ready to say pelosi and schumer need to go?
12:04 pm
>> i mean, i think so. a lot of this is not just about these two personalities. they're also about the structural shift that these two personalities have led in their time and leadership. the answer is yes. the answer is we need to shift power. we need to make sure that we have a transition of power in the leadership of the democratic party. >> bill: so you live in that town. how is that going? >> listen, this is the next big story for the next congress. no matter what happens in georgia with the run-offs down there, whether republicans hold on to control or they don't, just barely, it will be slim in both chambers. that opens the door for moderates to have a broader coalition to get together and steer legislation. that's the concern for aoc and others. they think the leadership needs to change. i think there will be a battle with the progressive side of the democratic party and the standard bearers. >> bill: what is interesting
12:05 pm
about that, if republicans want to get to the bottom of the biden business, you win both races in early january. if you do, you can figure this out on an investigative front. if you do, you probably hold off the left flank of the democratic party for joe biden when he takes office in january. >> the run-offs are key for that reason. the committee hearings, you can control the agenda. you can control the investigations. if they lose, it would be senate majority leader chuck schumer and senate banking chairman bernie sanders. >> bill: thanks, bret. want to bring in howie kirtz. here's the headline of the "new york post." covering hunter biden. distrusting the media. what do you think about that? >> there's no question, bill, during the campaign, most news organizations played down or ignored or dismissed some kind of russian disinformation, the allegations about hunter biden.
12:06 pm
even today, even after hunter biden has acknowledged a federal tax investigation, some are continuing to play it down as well. and i was drilling down on a rasmussen poll because it's like a double standard with the way the trump family has been covered the last four years. look at it. 78% of republicans in this survey say media organizations play down the hunter story to help joe biden. 32% of democrats disagree. you have the social media sensory, twitter, facebook, they have damaged their reputation with the way they suppress stories. >> bill: so how will the media cover joe biden? >> well, i hope with more aggressiveness than what we're seeing in this transition period. with some exceptions, he's had an easy time when he's gotten together with the press. i'm not saying it has to be -- it's a very different president. he has a different style. he doesn't attack the press or tend to go on the attack. things will heat up after
12:07 pm
january 20th when he doesn't have the luxury of being the president-elect. >> bill: and it seems he would bark back at reporters. remember on the tarmac late in the campaign when a reporter from cbs broached the question? he got an earful. >> and defending his son is a sensitive subject for joe biden. but he has a major league headache. this federal investigation is not going to go away unless hunter biden is cleared. i'd like to quickly get on the coronavirus relief bill. >> bill: sure. >> that is i just want to say i think it's a disgrace that congress has spent so long doing nothing while millions are suffering in this surging pandemic. it's a lot of finger pointing, a situation where it's politics. why america hates washington. now they don't want to go
12:08 pm
empty-handed for christmas and there's pressure to get something done. you never know until the ink is dry. >> bill: senator rob portman said that they will possibly get a deal by saturday. so we'll see if that's the case. senators staying in d.c. over the weekend. thanks, howie. nice to see you. talk soon. >> thank you. >> bill: mitch mcconnell said the senate will work over the weekend. he warns not every detail is nailed down just yet. chad pergram covers congress. he's live on the hill now. chad? >> it's darkest before the dawn. that's where we are as they try to finalize a package for covid relief and fund the government. mitch mcconnell reiterated christmas is the worst time of the year on capitol hill. >> we in congress are no strangers to december funding deadlines or the occasional pre-christmas cliff-hanger. in that respect, the situation we face now is familiar.
12:09 pm
>> nancy pelosi and chuck schumer spoke last night with steve mnuchin. they traded offers again today. [inaudible] >> now, the last mile on legislation of this dimension is always the hardest. a group of 14 house conservatives is urging president trump to veto the bill. they say the plan is take it or leave it. even if they finalize a deal, they have a problem. it takes awhile to process the bill and leaders have to make sure they have the votes. so weekend sessions are likely and probably have to do a short-term spending bill to avoid a shut down. bill? >> bill: thanks. we're watching it. chad pergram as well. also watching this fda meeting happening as we speak on whether or not to approve another vaccine by the end of the week. dr. marc siegel on that. later, dr. anthony fauci joins me with his message to americans on how to celebrate safely on
