5:30 a.m. 911 call, we are going to be learning a heck of a lot more about who placed that call and why shots were fired allegedly when there was no evidence of such a thing occurring. this investigation continues, the fbi and atf are heading the investigation. we appreciate you watching and continuing coverage now with america's news headquarters. >> fox news alert this morning, a massive explosion rocking nashville on christmas morning, and police say they do not think it was an accident. officials set to hold a news conference any minute now. the blast blackening streets and damaging at least 20 buildings, blowing out windows and forcing folks out of bed in music city. at least three people injured, some say it felt like an earthquake. we are seeing extensive damages in the popular downtown area near broadway. the fbi and atf have joined metro pd on the scene, and police say there is little

question this explosion was a deliberate act. welcome to a brand-new hour of ""america's newsroom,"" and merry christmas. i'm rick leventhal. >> merry christmas, writ, and everyone at home. i am molly line. we are watching what has just occurred here all through the morning and nashville, quite a scene. it felt miles away, taking place shortly before dawn. police had been responding to reports of shots fired in that area, and alerted the bomb squad about a suspicious recreational vehicle shortly before that blast. we are expecting a press conference. you can see the microphones they are set up right now. we expect to hear from the fbi out of memphis, the atf, and local police seeking more information about what occurred there in nashville. on the ground in washington we have rich edson to bring us what we know from there. rich? >> good afternoon, molly. it is a major police response in downtown nashville after an rv blew up there at 6:30 this morning. an explosion police say was
10:02 am
intentional. law enforcement there has scheduled another briefing, that is supposed to happen within minutes. police say three people went to the hospital, though none are in critical condition. witnesses say the explosion shattered glass, knock down trees, and shook buildings, causing smoke and fire visible from across the nashville area. >> the explosion knocked one of our offices to the ground, thankfully no officers were significantly hurt. i think one officer sustained what we hope his temporary hearing loss. but no other officers have been injured. >> police say they dispatched officers to the area this morning after a call about gunfire. when they arrived, they say they saw this rv. they say it looked suspicious, called the bomb squad and starting clearing people out of the area. police say they've sealed off downtown, they brought in police dogs to make sure there are no other explosives, they have no
10:03 am
indication there are other devices. the department of justice says early this morning the acting attorney general, jeff rosen, directed department resources to nashville. nashville metro police say the fbi and atf are investigating there, and other law enforcement officials will arrive in the coming days. this is right in downtown nashville near bars and restaurants in what is usually a very vibrant tourist city. molly, back to you. >> molly: that it is, one of america's most iconic cities. rich edson from washington, thank you pat i want to bring a david katz, former federal agent and current ceo of global security group. david, thank you for joining us. we're glad we are able to get you on this christmas, in the wake of what appears to be an intentional act, an intentional bombing there in nashville, in an area, as rich just pointed out, normally crowded with tourists. this did occur very early in the morning, 6:30 in the morning, on christmas day. not a very -- not crowded at that time as it might be if this was a thursday, friday, saturday
10:04 am
night in this great music-centered city. what do you make of the timing of this? >> actually i was just there couple months back in that exact neighborhood. it's kind of interesting, it's a little busier than the day, obviously. at night there is a lot of residential buildings right in the area. 6:30, christmas morning, you have virtually no street traffic. so we know so far we have a shots fired call, and i agree with your other guests who have made this point, that's my first thought. if the shots fired calls in and there are no shots fired, that's typically an attempt to lure police officers to the scene. we don't know exactly what they saw that tipped them off that said this particular vehicle is problematic. not to suspicious, but possibly a bomb. you know that because they immediately initiated evacuation procedures. he raises a lot of questions. barr we may get some answers to some of her questions here, we expect this press conference to begin shortly. we expect the fbi out of memphis
10:05 am
to be there. atf, as well as the metro national police department. a spokesperson from the police department today, don aaron, spoke a bit about the shots being fired, drying the officer to the area. they did not give any specific details about what that officer, that hero officer that began the motions to clear the area, to ensure people were out of buildings, when he saw that was so suspicious that entailed calling in a bomb squad on christmas morning. what does that tell us? that he saw something so clearly unusual that he needed to take immediate action? >> i was thinking the same thing. that area, you wouldn't expect an rv to be parked on the street. maybe it wasn't, maybe it was physically next to the building. that would certainly be an unusual thing, and perhaps you could tell by the way the position of the shots, that it was heavily laden. maybe there were no tags. they were a bunch of things than be looked at that are indicative of the possible
10:06 am
vehicle bomb. this is an rv, this is a vehicle that can carry a great deal of weight and explosives. but that initial assessment by the officer, spot on, critical. and, of course, shortly thereafter, there is the explosion. was it a timer, was it deliberately set? a cell phone transmission? >> we are beginning to see the authorities stepping up to the microphone. >> he will be followed by united states attorney don cochran from the middle district of tennessee, and he will be followed by mickey french, special agent in charge of the atf for this area. he will be followed by matt foster, special agent in charge of the national fbi office, and then national fire department chief director william swan will speak to some operations that are taking place on second avenue. chief john drake. >> thank you, don.
10:07 am
good afternoon. this morning around 5:30 a.m., officers responded to a call for shots fired in the downtown ar area. specifically, second and near commerce. they've also encountered an rv that had a recording saying a potential bomb would detonate within 15 minutes. officers, upon hearing that, decided to evacuate the buildings nearby, so they began knocking on doors, making announcements, communicating with everyone to giv get people safe. shortly after that, the rv exploded. we had one officer knocked to the ground. another officer is fine. [sirens] currently what we have going on now, we have k-9 dogs, all of them are out.
10:08 am
partnering with tennessee highway patrol, our federal partners, and we are sleeping the downtown area, just as a precaution, to make sure that everyone is safe and that any services needed, we can provide that. with that said, we don't feel there is any concern in the downtown area of anything else right now, but we are doing it as a precaution just to search with the bomb dogs. at this time i will turn it over to attorney john cochran. >> good afternoon, and merry christmas, unfortunately this is not the way any of us wanted to spend our christmas morning, i know. i am don cochran, the u.s. attorney in nashville, tennessee. this morning i brief the acting attorney general, jeff rosen, on the situation in nashville. he has told me to tell the police chief in nashville that we are devoting the entire resources of the department of justice to help in their investigation. the fbi and atf are taking the
10:09 am
lead in this investigation, and i want to turn the stage of her first two assistant special agent in charge, matt foster of the fbi, and then mickey french of the atf to talk about the resources that will be brought to bear on this investigation. matt? >> thank you, don. the fbi stands at the city of nashville today, in this very tragic christmas day event. this is our city, too. we live here, we work here, and we are putting everything we have into finding who is responsible for what has happened here today. as part of doing that, there are investigative leads to be pursued. there's also technical work that needs to happen. we are standing with metro national police department and our federal partners and our state partners to bring every resource we can possibly bring to bear to find out what happened here today, and to bring those responsible to
10:10 am
justice. the investigative leads, i'm sure you understand, not something that we can talk about. as we continue to pursue every tip, i would ask the public to go to www.fbi.gov/nashville. www.fbi.gov/nashville. an online tip submission process has been set up. please tell us what you know. we need your leads and we need your help. you can also call 1-800-call-fbi. call in tip information. if you know anything about what happened here today, we appreciate your help. on the technical side, our focus will be on bringing the technical experts of the fbi from across the country, including the fbi laboratory, or hazardous devices, and our experts from response teams nationwide into nashville to help process this massive crime scene, along with the atf, the
10:11 am
metro nashville pd, and many other partners that are part of this effort that will continue. we will find out what happened. that's all. >> good afternoon. my name is mickey french, and the special agent in charge of the atf nashville field division. the atf is continuing to be a critical partner with the metro nashville police department, as well as our federal counterpar counterparts. atf responded this morning with several groups and personnel from the nashville field division. we have also activated our national response team. that particular team is made up of specialists, as well, certified explosives specialists, chemists, engineers, as well as evidence recovery, interview teams, and so forth. we will be coordinating that with metro nashville police department as well as the fbi, and we will put together a team that is going to collectively
10:12 am
work this investigation to the fullest. the main priority is obviously to keep our nashville citizens safe and secure, and we will work jointly with everybody here to do that. thank you. >> good afternoon. i'm going to give you just a quick update. i know don mentioned earlier as far as the fire department's role, ems, we did transport three individuals with minor injuries. right now we are doing, without structural engineers along with urban search and rescue, hazmat teams, we are going into the buildings and making sure, number one, that the building is sound, and ensuring that there are no other victims or anyone there. a lot of moving parts. again, my hat goes off to all the teams working together as one unit, and we will continue to work on until the job is done. thank you.
10:13 am
>> ladies and gentlemen, that's update as we know it as peasant. if there's another briefing for this afternoon, boolean opd pretty much no what we know at this juncture, as far as our community is concerned. to reiterate, we hav know of no other imminent danger to the city at this point. the bomb dogs going through the area are doing that as a precaution, okay? >> [indistinct] >> i can't hear you. >> [indistinct] >> i will talk with joseph pleasant, i can tell you that several of the buildings on second avenue have structural damage.
10:14 am
some of the damage more than others. i know that chief swan said the fire department is looking at those structural issues now to determine any more potential impact. >> [indistinct] do you know the purpose of why this happened? >> as the fbi said, we will find that out. there are a number of people working right now on christmas day, running leads throughout the city. from our police department, the fbi, atf, answers will be forthcoming. we can't discuss those with you now, or exactly what we are looking at, but answers, i'm sure, will be forthcoming. >> [indistinct] >> i have no information about anybody being found. we do not know whether anyone was in the rv when it exploded.
10:15 am
we do not know whether anyone was in the rv when it exploded. i cannot tell you at this point with a there is a potential for a fatality in that scenario. >> [indistinct] >> it is believed it was coming from the rv. there were announcements coming from the rv. that is the extent of what we can say at this point. >> [indistinct] >> there are cameras throughout the downtown area. yes, we have been reviewing downtown cameras, and that is all part of the totality of the investigation. >> [indistinct] has anything come to fruition from that that you can share? >> just providing more pieces to
10:16 am
the puzzle, more information. as chief drake said, we had a number of officers, several officers on second avenue who were working to protect the public when the explosion occurred. as he said, one of those officers was knocked off his feet. we have some counselors with our officers, our behavioral health folks are with those officers and ensuring that are okay. i mean, they went through a very traumatic experience themselves. >> is really amazing how the officers and first responders run into the face of danger. they do, according to that rv, that there was some kind of threat, and they continued -- >> well, they went to the residential areas on second avenue, and did their best to get people to safety. obviously they heard the announcements coming from this vehicle, they took them seriously, and we are working to seal the streets to protect
10:17 am
folks, and we think lives were saved. thanks very much, folks. >> rick: authorities in nashville they are wrapping up a briefing on the latest on the explosion that occurred in the area. hold on, lee got one more question about to be answered. >> the vehicle explosion occurred outside 166 second, the at&t building. we do not know if that was a coincidence or whether that was the intention. >> rick: so there were some things we did knew dominic learn from the news briefing. some of them very fascinating details. for one, we can say -- or the authorities can say with some assurance that there are no secondary devices they are aware of, so they are pretty confident that they won't be another explosion. molly, i thought the headline there was that, when they got that 911 call and arrived on the
10:18 am
scene, the suspicious rv had a recording that a bomb would be detonating within 15 minutes, and officers were cleaning buildings in the area when it actually did explode. >> molly: that absolutely answered one of the big questions we had about what exactly was so suspicious when the officers got there that they needed to call in a bomb squad about an rv on christmas morning. and a recording, warning that in 50 minutes they will be a bomb come is a pretty clear indication you need to call in the bomb squad. those officers are heroes. it is something the chief their knowledge a few moments ago. we think lives were saved. those officers took the time. the limited amount of time they were potentially led to believe that they had from this recording to get people in that area, this residential apartment buildings, and get people out, and lives were saved. we know the officers, at least one was so close when the explosion occurred that there was literally blown off their feet. we also had a report that another officer, potentially the same officer, we are not sure, they have suffered some hearing
10:19 am
loss, as well. to be when i saw some on social media come of the actual event itself. i talked to some people that rocked out of their beds, and we hope to get them on sometime this afternoon. we do know that the fbi and atf have taken a lead on this. i can tell you the fbi's evidence response team is very, very good at collecting the little shreds on the ground there that could lead them to the clue they need to determine who exactly did this. we heard from metro pd there that they don't know if someone was in the rv when it detonated. they're going building to building to see if there might be more victims and to ensure that those buildings are structurally sound. let's bring back david katz, former u.s. federal agent. was there anything you heard in the news briefing that stood out to you? >> [laughs] well yeah, you mentioned it. the recording. i was racking my brain, i was going to say whoever this cop was, this was lieutenant colombo. was he looking at depressed
10:20 am
shocks, was he looking at lack of proximity to the building? you roll up and get a recording that says this vehicle is going to explode in 15 minutes. by the way, thanks for taking the time to mention the heroic actions of the officers. every miscreant who starts chanting "defund the police" and all that nonsense, look at those folks. they've clearly saved lives. >> rick: no doubt paid the fbi said their investigative details they simply cannot reveal for obvious reasons, but they also did mention all the cameras in the area. what will they be looking for now? >> in addition to the cameras, which will show hopefully the vehicle being pulled in, of course if anybody got out of the vehicle, where they went. that's number one. number two, every major metropolitan area has license plate readers and other technological devices that can pinpoint the location and proximity. for example, if that vehicle had plates, they are going to roll past -- new york city, for example, might have license
10:21 am
plate readers. bridges have them, tunnels have them. you may be able to identify how the vehicle came in, but more importantly, where it came from. there's no doubt in my mind they will retrieve enough evidence to identify the vehicle by these in number, and i have a high sense of probability that they will be able to put identity to the person behind the wheel. >> rick: the most fascinating thing here is the recording warning of an explosion. that is not typical behavior for a terrorist. they would be warnings, but no blast, in many cases. or a blast with no warnings. in this case we had a warning and a blast. >> you know what that reminds me of? the basque separatists east to do that. their intention was to destroy property but minimize risk to human life. in this particular case you have a vehicle, at a very early hour, what is not a lot of street traffic, and it gets parked.
10:22 am
at&t may not have been a target. not because they were upset with their cell phone service. if there is a connection, it is probably corporate ownership. i'm sure the fbi's looking at that. that action where they are warning law enforcement, originally the shots fired theme seemed like a trap. to draw the police and then detonate. clearly not. clearly something else was going on here that we have yet to fully understand. speak to david, i want to talk a little bit about the efforts. the fbi has said, "we will find out what happened here." they called on the public to help with that. they said to go to fbi.gov/nashville or 1-800-call-fbi. in the wake of the boston bombing, at that point the unknown suspect, they really pulled the public for help. how can that assist as we are just beginning in this investigation? >> there was a report earlier
10:23 am
that a police officer had to shoo away someone walking the dog. maybe they're walking walking their dog when the vehicle was pulled up and saw it. we have businesses with cameras, residential buildings have cameras, people have cameras in their vehicles now. by asking for public assistance, anyone can say, "i was down there." maybe they review their footage and say, guess what? is the rv and hopefully there's the individual. that's going to be one thing. cell phone usage. was anyone on a cell phone, using their directional system connect with a using waze? if they were a cell phone activity in that area, they're going to nail it. let's say there was a line of sight and it was a call in detonation, they will nail it. if it's a timer, they will figure it out by the forensics. this is so early in the
10:24 am
investigation, but that recording puts a whole different perspective on the whole investigation. >> rick: david and molly, i think the other key point is that this happened at 6:30 on christmas morning. if this bomber wanted to do the most damage and the most time, he would have waited until 6:30 in the evening, or in the middle of the afternoon, or maybe last night when there were people up and down broadway. he could have potentially injured and killed scores of people, and clearly this was timed for the minimum loss of life. based on what we are seeing come of the images from the scene there, it could have been horrible. i'm hearing reports of people who are miles away feeling it, being woken up by this blast. it rocked downtown nashville. that is not an exaggeration. >> i stayed in that exact area, back in september. i am quite familiar with it. you are exactly right, you flip this by 12 hours, you have mass casualties. at this time of the morning, it's christmas morning, people are still in bed sleeping off
10:25 am
the effects of the night before. i'm still kind of puzzling about the timing of christmas day, be on the fact that it's a quite morning. you can pick any quiet morning. certainly the intention here with that fact you just mentioned, as well as the recording, suggests a lack of intent to do human -- harm to human beings. either physical damage, making a statement. gosh, it's a little bit of a head-scratcher so far. >> molly: david, we know this was a very powerful explosion. we seek the debris in the street, the charred building, what appears to be melted parts of the vehicle. they are not sure they'll be able to find a body and don't know if someone may have been in that vehicle or not. we know quite a team has been assembled, they said everything from chemists to certified explosive experts, engineers. where the physical clues they'll be looking for that might help them find the perpetrator? >> that place is going to become good with fine tooth.
10:26 am
any explicit is going to leave a residue. be identified. i don't think they'll have it by the end of the day, but they may. in addition to that, depending on the nature of the device, it'll have components. wirings, containment. those who would put together and analyze. let's say it was put together, with the addition of the explosive, wiring they could trace back to a particular hardware store or propane tanks that can go to a local home depot. or if they find it was a nitrogen oxide-based explosive, fertilizer-based explosive, rather, they'll know that, as well. but every component, these guys who do this type of work are extraordinarily competent. i have no doubt they will figure out down to the t what happened, how it was detonated. they'll know all of this, it'll just take a little time. >> molly: david katz, thank you for your insight here
10:27 am
on this christmas afternoon. we appreciate you taking a couple minutes rest in this porton story. thank you very much. >> rick: the investigation continues in nashville, building by building, block by block search. we will continue to follow the development there in the music city which was rocked by an explosion this morning. miraculously, just three people suffering minor injuries, but again, a search for more potential victims goes on. we will continue to track this breaking story coming up right after this. we made usaa insurance for members like martin. an air force veteran made of doing what's right, not what's easy. so when a hailstorm hit, usaa reached out before he could even inspect the damage. that's how you do it right. usaa insurance is made just the way martin's family needs it with hassle-free claims, he got paid before his neighbor even got started. because doing right by our members, that's what's right. usaa. what you're made of, we're made for. ♪ usaa

10:32 am
big headlines out of that press conference was that the rv, bef, there was a recording that officer had heard, and the recording warned that in 15 minutes they would be a bomb. the officer took heroic actions there on the scene to get people out of nearby buildings, lives were saved, but an explosion did then occur. the white house says president trump has been briefed on the explosion that shook that downtown area in nashville, authorities calling it a "deliberate act." mike meredith has been traveling with the president and joins us now from west palm beach, florida. mark, the latest? >> as you mentioned, president trump was briefed by security officials after that explosion rocked nashville early this morning. the president offering his resources of the government and thinking the first responders beginning the investigation, trying to figure out what was going on. they have not heard from the president on camera since he arrived in south florida on wednesday night with the first lady to kick off his holiday vacation, and we've been waiting to see if maybe the
10:33 am
president would talk about this are also issue a tweet. so far neither coming from the white house paid us a statement this morning that the president has been briefed. we also know the acting attorney general, jeff rosen, was also briefed on this, offering the full resources of the justice department. we know now, obviously, with the fbi and atf heavily involved in leading this investigation, they will still be a lot of coordination on what on what's going on also whh that stimulus package, that congress approved before the holiday. the big question, will the president sign it or veto it? will that mean for people waiting to get assistance connect with the stimulus checks would go out or not or whether we be facing another potential government shutdown early next week. so much up in the air with all of this. the president released a christmas message yesterday come in it they talked about the of the country is facing, how they are proud of the people working on the vaccine. that is something that looks like it was taped a few days
10:34 am
ago, likely over at the white house before the first family came down here. it is possible there may space not be another message on christmas day. the pool that travels with the president have been outside the trump international golf club all morning long. the president left about 9:00 to head over to his golf club, something he traditionally does well out here on vacation. as for the president-elect team, they indicated that they weren't expecting the president-elect was going to make any comments on this. we are still waiting to see whether or not he may have been briefed on what's going on in nashville. his questions about what may be happening behind the scenes. you can imagine with the christmas holiday, not many people at their desk. when the president travels he still has his medications team advisors with him. we'll wait to see if they have more on this with what's going on in nashville as well as the other stories i was talking about. >> molly: absolutely, a lot of americans across the country that have been suffering through the course of this pandemic, they would certainly like some
10:35 am
news about what's going on as far as negotiations and stimulus are concerned. we see this really big breaking news out of nashville. mark meredith, thank you. working christmas for us and keeping an eye to see if the president or perhaps even the president-elect has something to share with us throughout the day. mark, thank you very much. rick? >> rick: we want to alert our viewers, if you have friends or family in the nashville area and you are trying to reach them and having a hard time, don't panic. at&t customers have been affected by the blast in downtown nashville. a lot of cell service has been affected and a lot of people who were living in that downtown area have been evacuated. they could be on the move, and their cell phones might not be working right now, but the best news from law enforcement this morning and this afternoon is that there were three injuries, they were minor, and we believe that they were very few people on the street and in that area at the time of this explosion. we want to dig deeper on this with former u.s. attorney guy lewis who joins us here this afternoon. guy, remarkable series of events
10:36 am
there in nashville on christmas morning, and the remarkable headline that the bomber had a recording in his rv, warning of a destination within 15 minutes, which gave officers a chance to knock on doors and start clearing the area before that rv exploded. does that sound like anything you've encountered in all of your years prosecuting cases? >> very, very unusual, rick. in fact, if we take a step back and think about this, it does tell me that, clearly, this was premeditated. someone had taken a great deal of time and effort to not only place the explosive device on the rv, in the rv, but they had also put some kind of recording device that would then notify the police officers. of course we know that someone called 911 about an hour before the device exploded, and then
10:37 am
when the police officers showed up, they heard this recording device, really fascinating. my guess is probably they looked inside the rv, which they can do, legally, after they knock on the door and figure out no one's there. i mean, what is in rv doing in downtown nashville? and then it became clear that they needed to clear the area asap, and within moments the rv explodes, causing all this damage. clearly premeditated, clearly criminal, somebody needs to be prosecuted, somebody is going to go to jail for this. >> the fact that the bomber warned people, and the fact that the bomber chose 6:30 in the morning on christmas day to set off his device, suggests that he wasn't necessarily trying to kill or hurt people, but he was obviously trying to make some kind of statement. i think that alone would be clues for investigators as they try to pore through the evidence
10:38 am
to figure out ho who did this. >> that's a good point. they could've picked any day of the week. christmas eve, after christmas, new year's. but this person, or these people, probably not just one person but several people, have picked christmas day. that is not a fortuity. that's not just willy-nilly. that was planned out, they thought about it. again, just like the placement of the bomb, just like the planning, just like the notification, just like the 911 call, and then the size of the explosion. that is why, when the fbi, the atf show up, and they ask the public for help, let me tell you, after prosecuting for years and years, no one is better than the public. people out there now, they have seen things, they've heard things, and once this coverage has become worldwide,
10:39 am
you are going to get information that is going to lead to ultimate arrests in this case. >> rick: that's an excellent point, likely there are people out there, at least one, maybe more, who know who this bomber is. if you wear the acting u.s. attorney in nashville today, what would you be doing right now? >> i would be making sure that the fbi, the atf, the department of justice, were all working closely together. and then i would make sure that the forensic team -- let me repeat, i would make sure that the forensic team would have every resource that they need. that is where a lot of the clues on this crime are going to be solved. some of the people with whom you've been speaking have talked a little bit about this. they can determine whether someone was inside. they can determine what kind of bomb this was. they can determine, as a result
10:40 am

11:11 am
gotten very clear to me was to minimize the civilian casualties, which is precisely why they put a tape recording in to warn away anyone who is coming or might be walking by. fully well knowing that the police are warn under the state constitution to protect and serve. they are not running away. they are running to the trap. right in to the lure. so what we saw here today was the snapping of a trap that thank god the timing was not perfectly synchronized evidently. because this is extremely, extremely nuanced and ironic. why would you set a bomb and deliberately warn civilians away? the reason he doesn't want casualties of civilians. he wanted to murder the responding officers. this is an horrific plot. true christmas miracle, rick, there are no fatalities. this is a christmas miracle in nashville. god bless responding officers. >> rick: pat, that very behavior should give clues to
