the white house meeting with senators from the gamestop are underway. we'll have more at 4:00 p.m. "the five" start right now. ♪ ♪ >> jesse: hello, everybody. i am jesse watters with dana perino, katie pavlich, greg gutfeld and donna brazile. it's 5:00 in new york city and this is "the five." president biden meeting right now with ten republican senators at the white house. that group of g.o.p. lawmakers trying to cut a deal on covid relief after biden has repeatedly preached unity. the far left is demanding the president dig that bipartisanship and ran through his almost $2 trillion plan without republicans. bernie sanders is leading the charge on that idea.

>> the question is not bipartisanship. the question is addressing the unprecedented crises that we face right now. if republicans want to work with us, they have better ideas on how to address those crises, that's great. but to be honest with you, i have not yet heard that. >> jesse: now the question is what will president biden actually do? the white house and the media are pretending the president is bipartisan biden but he's done the complete opposite. instead, what americans are getting is job killing joe. remember the new president has signed a record number of executive orders in this first week at the far left absolutely loves. then again it shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody since biden did say this as a candidate. >> i have laid out the most detailed plans on the economy and on issues related to health care and the rest of any president in modern history.

i mean, if i'm elected and it passes, i'm going to be good to go down as one of the most progressive presidents in american history. >> jesse: dana perino, the big question in washington is can joe build a coalition? i don't think he has the votes to new 2 trillion so can he build the coalition? >> dana: if you think back to 2009 in the big stimulus bill, one thing that we learned is that every single day the clock is ticking. the window starts to close on a bipartisan deal. this one is actually quite puzzling. i noticed a definite shift in media coverage over the weekend about the biden administration already. just now starting their second full week in office. that was this notion that wait, you said unity but yet you haven't reached out to anybody. i find it quite remarkable that these ten republicans are willing to say okay, we have an idea. do you want to hear from us?

instead of vice president harrison president biden calling them to the white house. they will have this meeting. i think it's a patina. i think the democrats want to go big, fast, liberal. bernie sanders remember plays it very smart. he got behind biden early on. obviously am not going to win. i'm going to get behind biden and i'm going to push as much as much as possible. he has accomplished a lot. the other thing that i would say is the democrats aren't even able to solidify their own side. one person standing out as possibly against a big deal that biden wants to do a senator joe manchin of west virginia. he is saying hold on a second. might be too much, too fast. they sent vice president harris to his state to do media which doesn't help him. president trump won west virginia by 40 points. it's fine to go in there and try to help senator to try to get to a decision but you have to have the right messenger. i don't think they did that. i think the window is closing on

a bipartisan deal. they've got to figure out something fast. >> jesse: katie, manchin is the linchpin and i don't think he's going to go for 2 trillion after president biden just unveiled 2 trillion in green new deal spending and after a couple trillion went out the door last quarter. >> katie: it's a big question. you have republican senators saying it's not that we haven't pushed through a bunch of relief. we spent trillions and trillions of dollars last year and now we want to push through another $2 trillion and we have $27 trillion in debt and we don't know yet if all the money with that allocating has been spent. this is what you get when you lose the senate and you have bernie sanders in charge of the budget committee. this is all his caucus pushing from the far left to get joe biden to do this and so far in his presidency he's perfectly willing to sign whatever the left pushes on his desk. i wouldn't be surprised if he wants to push forward with this as well but let's not forget republicans also offered on most $2 trillion of relief in october

and it was denied by nancy pelosi because they wanted use it as leverage for the election. now democrats are going to use this and say we had a crisis on our hands and republicans don't care about people and they don't want to help with relief and therefore were going to push through anyway. some republicans are meeting with the president today saying look, if we can't get together on covid relief, the rest of the presidency is going to be pretty rough when it comes to your claims of wanting to unify the country. >> jesse: donna, do you think president biden has been off to a rough start? he had his deportation freeze basically tossed by a federal judge. he said the keystone pipeline to open his face as he laid off bunch of workers and now this covid relief bill is starting to hit the skids. how would you assess the first two weeks? >> donna: well, first of all, it hasn't been a full two weeks but i look forward to the next two years for obvious reasons. the president has said that the plan -- i know it's going to take a long time but i'll get it

right for the next four years. president joe biden said the plan has to be big enough and broad enough to take care of the problems we face as a nation. katie mentioned october when speaker pelosi and others put forward a new bunch of ideas. remember it was may 15 that they passed the heroes act and it took months before the republicans got serious enough to come to the table. i think the american people want a rescue plan that will help them. we should not be going from cliff to cliff waiting for the next round of unemployment checks to be stopped. let's give the american people the relief they need, targeted and make sure we can get the broad support i think will help us through this crisis. >> jesse: greg gutfeld, take it away. >> greg: first of all, the stimulus check i guess was supposed to be $2,000 and now biden is saying it's for $200. as the dems like to describe it, mostly 2,000. anyway. it's not just the $2 trillion of

our schools. >> are coming up on a year with some kids have had to sleep in their bedrooms and then beyond zoom classroom for eight hours and they don't socialize. we are killing our children mentally. it's mental abuse we are doing to our kids. >> donna: dana, parents are frustrated. teachers are frustrated. everyone is pretty much frustrated. there is no national blueprint on how to safely reopen all of our school districts, whether they are small or large school districts. let me ask you a question. what type of blueprint do we need right now to ensure that all of our schools are reopened at some point during the spring before our students fall even further behind? >> dana: i am not ever for a federal blueprint for local school districts but i do think there are plenty of local school districts that have shown they can do it. we had a guest on "america's newsroom" this morning showing that way in wyoming because of that in school every day.

roaming is not like chicago but their lori lightfoot's think she's investing hundred million dollars saying that the cdc is saying it's safe. the scientist on the mayor's side. i have to imagine she's quite frustrated probably thinking after all we've john for you unions, you're going to do this not only to the mayor because she wants to get kids back in school but to the children. there's a real outcry in one of the things that's different this time than previous teacher unions squabbles is that the entire nation is focused on this issue because all kids across the country and all parents if they had their kids in school or if they don't, they are paying attention to this issue more than ever before and the sciences on the side of getting kids back in school. >> donna: 25 states along with the district of columbia and puerto rico have moved teachers up on the list of people who received early vaccination.

what steps would you take, greg? i know you come up with a lot of great ideas on many topics. what steps would you take to ensure these teachers have moved up and are eligible to get vaccinated? >> greg: let me get back to you on that. i wanted to talk about joy behar. is that still on the table? >> donna: go ahead. >> greg: this is what drives me crazy. it's so easy for people like joy behar to say why not just have everyone repeat a year? there is so much anxiety and uncertainty. is that such a far out idea? it's so easy for people like me and like joy who have no skin in the game because we have a job that benefits from crisis. so it's really easy to tell parents who have anxiety about their kids not learning. stick it out another year. because i'm comfortable. i can do whatever i want. she's a perfect example of how

people in the media can say whatever they want because their suggestions are actually divorced from consequences. i don't have any skin in the game with school because i don't have any kids. the only people who should be giving advice on kids is probably me, that in the lincoln project. >> donna: i've got a little skin although i don't have any kids in school but i've got a lot of nieces and nephews and a lot of others involved in the school system. vaccinations, giving them early access will be helpful. katie, you and i share a concern about at-risk students. we know they benefit from in person learning. what other steps should state, local, and federal officials take to try to move this along so that teachers and students can get back together and we can reopen school safely? >> katie: i think local officials should put a freeze on property taxes and allow parents to take that money and send

their kids to a different school of the teachers union, public schools aren't going to show up. it's past time that some teachers are fired for refusing to show up one another number of faces they've put to the front of the line for a vaccine and then they move the goalposts again and still refuse and for mayors like lori lightfoot who is in chicago who oftentimes allows this extortion to go on with the teachers unions are reasonable time they have a contract up, when you allow that they continue to come back for more extortion than that's exactly what this is. there are big school districts in florida, small districts in wisconsin that have been opened that are open, there's no excuse for this anymore. people need to be held accountable for it because students are suffering. people are paying for teachers to be teaching and they are not teaching and because they are paying for them to teach, they don't have money to send their kid to another school that's been opened. >> donna: i hope they get all on the same page because i don't think it's extortion. it's about their safety. jesse, you do have skin in the

game had i've been with you on numerous occasions and you've shown me pictures of your kids. what's your solution to this problem? >> jesse: my kids are in school because they are in catholic school and the catholics don't play around. in chicago, i said last week it costs $25 million to open up chicago school districts. they did it for 100 million. so kickbacks, they have to be happening. any prosecutor worth his salt should be able to find it. the expenses in the ventilation of grades. apparently that's done so go teach. a lot of schools are spending money on mobile air purifiers. they are cracking windows. they are slapping on masks and they are hiring more janitors. where is jill biden? she has a degree in education? i think she should give a speech about this. michelle obama and barack obama last time i checked, they were from chicago. may be a nice tweet would help people. dropped dr. fauci out. where is joe biden?

and you're concerned about your child go back to school, then many school districts have provided opportunity for you to keep your kid at home and zoom in on the class. i think a lot of teachers have gotten creative but a lot of parents who got a very creative. for joy behar to suggest, like repeat a year. how insulting to parents were basically been working there job at the kitchen island and going to the dining room table when they can when they get a break from their resume calls that never end to try to figure out a way to upload an assignment for the kid and then coming back over and doing something else. parents have really, really stepped up and i think the teachers, i think there's going to be a long term effect of this. i don't think people are going to forget this anytime soon. the idea of school choice that katie was mentioning, this is a great opportunity. in the election in arizona, one of the most important issues on a local level was a school choice issue. katie probably knows more about that than i do.

difficult for over 100 million americans. how difficult has the storm been for you? >> jesse: i had to walk rookie in several inches of snow. new yorkers are like toddlers. it snows and we are like oh, my god. if you live in minnesota, this happens like every day. >> dana: it does. greg, did you walk uphill both ways today getting to work? >> greg: i don't know, is that a euphemism? your sick mind. is this nature's way of reducing crime. it will be the safest day in new york city all year. they won't be stealing any cars and they will be eluding my neighborhood. the worst part about it, the sidewalk moats. when you're short person like myself or dana, the sidewalk modes. they push all the snow up so you can get to the sidewalk. it's just wrong.
