we are joined by the mother of two who joins me now. appreciate it. definitely an important conversation. let's put these numbers, 150,000 teachers prioritized over 760,000 seniors according to the oregon governor. what is your reaction? how frustrating is it when you know teachers are getting the vaccine and yet still not back in the classroom? >> upon the governor's decision to vaccinate the teachers before the elderly even though it is controversial but it is concerning knowing there are many teachers and educators that may not see a classroom the school year. the largest school districts have no plans to bring their youngest children into the classroom until april and several high schoolers have no

plans to get kids back inside the classroom the school year. i don't think that is right, that that could be hundreds or thousands of vaccines going to teachers when they are not going back to class. >> janice: i understand the teachers are getting vaccinated but teachers are getting vaccinated for the purpose of getting them back in the classroom, getting kids back in the classroom but that is not happening then this cycle will keep repeating when you could be using those vaccines for the elderly. correct? >> it is an active role, not in april or may or the fall which is a big concern. they need to take a uniform approach, the issue, the teachers unions who claim they are concerned about student

and i don't see a giant shift in the way the media treats him. there will be lipservice but i don't see giant change on this. todd: the pandemic killed so many thousands of people. you have a new op-ed called the future is florida. why do you say that? >> florida is opening throughout the pandemic and have been doing great. it has gone back leadership. governor desantis decided businesses and schools should be open and they have been and their numbers mirror new york and california's numbers who are tightly closed. politicians who have a backbone, governor desantis didn't want to see businesses in ruins and it is not just business politics but people policies.

todd: g.o.p. senators leaving their white house meeting without a bipartisan relief bill as democrats file a resolution to ram through the president's 1.9 trillion-dollar plan without republican support. jillian: south dakota senator mike rounds was a part of yesterday's meeting with the president and joins us now. senator, thank you for being here. we appreciate it. >> good morning. jillian: how did you walk away from this meeting feeling? did you feel like something could potentially get done in a bipartisan manner or do you think that this is going to get done without republicans? >> well, i think democrats are going to try keep the heat on republicans most certainly the president is not going to give up strategic opportunities to put pressure on us. in the meantime, i think we had a very good dialogue. i think he clearly understands there is no such thing as a perfect plan. he listened to a lot of our

concerns. we did not expect, going in, that we would make a deal. that's not what we went there for. we went there to express our interest in trying to find a path forward that would be good for the country long term and not just simply a matter of republicans versus democrats and fighting it out and having changes that would last for a very short period of time. and i think we had a president that understands that. he has got a background with the senate. so, i came away thinking yeah, there is, look, there is hope to try to find something in the future and it's not going to be easy. clearly, there is folks out there that would love to spent a huge amount of money and as long as it doesn't come out of their paycheck, it comes as borrowed money for the next generation, they are not afraid to spend it. todd: it is senator, refreshing to hear that word hope. the full screen we are going to put up on the screen for the viewer sort of communicates that hope as well. when you compare the two plans there, it does look like there is some agreement. you can see 160 billion in each plan for covid.

they are close on the stimulus checks per person. $1,400 in the biden plannen a thousand under the g.o.p. plan. of course, the big difference there is the income threshold it. is much lower on the g.o.p. plan. and then you have close on the weekly unemployment per person and a little bit of a difference as well. of course, 5 billion being a little in this context for low interest reasons for small business. if you are allowed to get into more specifics about what you learned in the meeting, where was the agreement, where was the agreement yesterday. >> well, to begin with, we wanted to be targeted and specific, with regard to where we wanted to put resources. we didn't want to go-cart blanch across everything. we also recognize that there were certain areas in which over an extended period of time we are going to need additional resources. so we tried to extend out some of the areas in which we could use for vaccines, for testing and so forth. we are in agreement on those. when it comes to actually addressing the pandemic issues and fighting it and winning that battle. and it really is a battle.

i think we were very cross to being on the same wavelength as the president. the place where we have differences is whether or not their plan is targeted enough. they really wanted to spend a lot of money, additional money on unemployment benefits for people that literally could, like in south dakota by the time you are all done, you could be making close $90,000 a year in unemployment benefits. that's not appropriate and doesn't get people back to work. of so, we wanted to target it. we have offered $300 additional per week on top of what you normally get with unemployment benefits. and extending through through june 30th. they wanted to extend them out through a longer period of time. that's one area in which we have got a disagreement. the other as i showed them yesterday when i got home last week my wife showed me a check got in the mail. i'm a member of the united states senate. i got a stimulus check. that's not necessarily the stimulus checks were supposed to come out.
