if president trump wanted to show his popularity, win georgia, at least one of the seats. it got out of control. i don't think he incontinueded . did he intend for them to breach the building and threaten to kill his vice president, the most loyal person he had. mitt romney, he had disagreements from his party. they were looking for the high profile lawmakers, no doubt about it. it became redundant. it was like the same thing, the same person showing more emotion, something personal about them. that's when they're beginning to lose the public as we get set for day three. they'll finish up with more testimony and then we've got more of this and we'll see what the trump team has. >> they didn't lose the senate. i was talking to somebody who was on the floor yesterday. there were tears in the eyes of a lot of u.s. senators, including republicans who were so moved. we had never realized how close some of our top lawmakers were

to this thing really going south. doesn't make a conviction more likely. that's unknown. we'll know by the end of the week. it's clear, ainsley, that had things happened a second or two earlier or a few feet further apart, -- closer, it could have been really, really bad. ainsley: no doubt. the whole thing is emotional. it's hard to watch the videos and most everyone would condemn what happened there, they should if they don't. devin nunes says that's not the issue. they just have to have the evidence that trump is the reason that this happened. listen. >> they just don't have any evidence. they haven't had any evidence for five years. they corrupted our intelligence agencies. we just did an impeachment a year ago. and look, the same thing holds true today. we should know exactly how many people entered that capitol. we should have an idea of who was actually breaking the

windows. we should interview all those people and say did you talk to donald trump. what's really happening here is that you've got the radical left that's in total control of the government now. they don't want donald trump to win. they fear his rallies, they fear that 74 and-a-half million people voted for donald trump. that's what's really going on here. ainsley: what's interesting is the lead impeachment manager for the democrats, congressman jamie raskin, he said that the president told everyone to fight like hell and they brought hell on us that day. he served as the inciter in chief. well, then after that some of his former tweets were unearthed. and jamie raskin was using the same language after ruth bader ginsburg's death, he tweeted out we must fight like hell to stop his attack on healthcare and the constitution. it will be interesting to see if the trump team, if his legal team brings this up. >> i think we have to as a

country stop protesting every election result. what was it like working for george bush here, from 2,000 to 2004. what was it like working for donald trump, where every day people said you're illegitimate, the russians put you there. what is it like as joe biden seems to win the election and the trump people don't accept it. we have to stop doing this. we have to get more faith in our election system. it has to happen in every state. do what florida, ohio, north carolina did, they tightened things up. let's talk about something else that needs to be tightened up. our southern border. the numbers reflect what we're seeing with the border patrol, what they've been saying. look at the apprehension and expulsions. year to year, already at our southern border in the middle of a pandemic, in a time where they're saying you might not be able to get on a flight, we're letting everyone come into our country and stay at least for a

while, enough to contaminate. >> ainsley: more than double. >> the border patrol is not equipped to handle it. january in 2020, there were 29,205 apprehensions and ex expulsions. the number now, 75,000. they are setting up tent cities, tent cities separating kids coming across unsupervised so kids are going to be kept in what they call soft body facilities. they're called tents. they're going to be in a parking lot. it's going to be brutal. it's because the wrong message has been sent from this administration to the triangle countries in central and south america. >> it's interesting, when you mention the kids. that number is absolutely skyrocketing because there are 300 kids apprehended at our southern border each and every day and that is higher than

we've seen for a very long time. by law, we are required to provide care for unaccompanied children who are under 18 who have no u.s. status. so why so many? when you see those big numbers, it's up 157% year after -- year over year. they are apprehending 4500 people at our southern border every day. okay. so we're just three weeks and one day into this administration and jen psaki, press secretary says, you know what. we're new to the job but our message to the people in south america and central america, don't come now. >> due to the pandemic and the fact that we have not had the time as an administration to put in place humane, comprehensive process for processing individuals who of are coming to the border, now is not the time to come and the vast majority of people will be turned away.

this is obviously an emotional issue for many of us who worked on in the past or the president himself, but we need time to put in place a comprehensive process and system that will allow for processing at the border of asylum seekers but also providing a pathway to citizenship for immigrants who are in the united states. >> she was very clear. now is not the time to come. so that would suggest in the future, ainsley, the administration will say oh, okay, time to come, border open of. ainsley: her message is not being heard when you look at the numbers, the past ten days border patrol apprehended 3,000 daily. on sunday, the agency said 1,000 migrants got away, they were able to detect them but they weren't able to object of contain them. nikki haley talked about this in a tweet. she said biden reinstituted obama's catch and release policy. illegal immigration has hit crisis levels, overwhelming border patrol facilities and

maxing out community resources like covid tests. we should be taking care of americans first. when biden took office, not only did he revoke when trump ended catch and release, he ended the building of the wall, ended the travel bans and tried to impose that 100 day pause on deportations but texas judge overturned that. >> you still have all your celebrity friends. say, listen, i would love to open up the border but we're in a pandemic. you understand. i'm thinking about banning nights flights to florida. i'm not sure jen psaki's press conferences, i'm not sure they got the message. let's talk about playing the national anthem. we've been doing it since 1918. i thought we would stick with it. for home games for the dallas mavericks in texas, mark cuban, the owner of the dallas mavericks decided not to play

it. then he went radio silent. there's not many people in the stands. they'll have about 1,000 to 2,000 soon. they didn't get much backlash immediately. what happened yesterday? the nba came out and this is heartening, the nba chief of communications, mike bass, says this. with the nba teams now in the process of welcoming back fans to arenas, all teams will play the national anthem in keeping with the long-standing league policy. with that, mark cuban spoke. >> listening to the community there, were quite a few people that voiced their concerns or really their fears that the national anthem did not fully represent them, that their voices were not being heard and so we had a lot of conversations about whether or not we should play the anthem. we didn't cancel the national anthem. the bottom line is, we had always discussed the fact that we probably would end up playing it at some point, probably when fans came back. >> probably when it hit the fan which was yesterday. last night, they actually did

play the anthem which a lot of people will be happy to know. it's interesting. yesterday when this story was breaking, he was exchanging an e-mail with a radio host in dallas by the name of mark davis, a contributor to the dallas morning news. he said i wanted to see if anybody noticed. before then, nobody said a word. then he said something that's really important. during our games, most people don't even show up for the anthem. when they're at the game, on the concourses, they don't stop, some people don't even stand. i would rather not play it if people won't respect it and would rather not play it if it is going to be used as a weapon when people disagree with what it represents. that's such a good point. how many time has the national anthem been playing and you continue your conversation with somebody or you continue to order your beer at the concourse, stuff like that. >> sometimes you're in a line. i don't know many people that keep talking through it. >> i've been at the concourse

the keystone xl pipeline. writing we write with alarm regarding your decision, the real world costs are devastating. they say they may take legal action now. georgia's attorney general chris carr signed the letter and he joins us now. what's your biggest concern for your state and can you take legal action? >> well, i'm concerned because this was a political reward for those that supported the biden/harris administration and it's political symbolism that's going to have real world impact, in the form of higher fuel costs for families and for businesses in georgia and around the country. it's going to disrupt industries like ago a culture which is our number one industry in georgia and manufacturing and consumer products but the biggest impact it's going to have is on the jobs that were going to be created by this particular project. 10,000 construction jobs, 42,000 direct and indirect jobs as a result of this.

that's families that are going to be devastated by the decision to pull this permit. ainsley: i found out this morning that all these celebrities, dozens of celebrities including cher and jane fonda and joaquin phoenix have written a letter to the president to ask them to shut down the dakota pipeline. when you hear the stories of all a these people that are out of work, can't pay for their daughter's school, hotels are shut down, losing money on gym member ships because the workers are leaving, why would the celebrities say this? >> i don't know. this is real world impact. this is not just politics. when you start seeing families that are impacted by this, but also, ainsley, this isn't an issue where we in the united states have done a great job of becoming more energy independent. and if this pipeline gets shut down, instead of dealing with one of our great allies and trading partners in canada, we're going to be relying more on crude from russia and from

venezuela and from the middle east. so i don't understand it. because this is going to impact folks here at home, real families, real jobs. it doesn't make any sense. ainsley: prices at the pump are going to go up too even if you're not in one of the states that's affected by it or you don't work on a pipeline. before the pipeline was shut down, before it was halted, the construction was halted. it was expected to bring 11,000 employments, would have included 8,000 plus union workers, 1.6 billion is expected in gross wages. a lot of money being lost, a lot of people affected and the biden administration says investments in infrastructure will create millions of good union jobs here in america. would a better solution have been to -- if he wants to shut down the pipeline, first come up with these alternatives, and then put those people to work there? >> or just not shut down the pipeline. i mean, those are real jobs today. what they're talking about is theoretical jobs that they haven't produced, they have no plan for. so again, this was a safe,

recall supporters during a coronavirus briefing. >> this comes as the recall effort nears the 1.5 million signatures needed, the threshold to make it work. ainsley: todd piro joins us live with the latest out there. hey, todd. >> reporter: good morning to you. a visibly irritated california governor delivering his covid briefing over chants calling for his recall. >> that we have since last october of when we began the process of changing our protocol as relates to distribution of the same. >> reporter: there was a bit of a back and forth about numbers, organizers saying they reached 1.5, others saying they reached 1.4 million votes. we're going with 1.4 million votes, 100,000 shy of qualifying for a state recall vote. the white house voicing their support for the embattled governor. press secretary jen psaki tweeting, quote, in addition to sharing a commitment to a range of issues with gavin newsom from

addressing the climate crisis, to getting the epidemic under control, potus does not support the effort to recall gavin newsom. one organizer said when they have to call out the big guns like that, that means they know they're in trouble, that he had to get them to come out in a white house tweet to say they don't support the recall is more evidence they're in trouble. the group leading the recall effort is expected to release the updated signature count tomorrow. they have until march 17 to get to 1.5 million signatures. back to you. >> all right. thanks, todd. preach appreciate it. 2 -- appreciate it. when new york governor andrew cuomo came out of nowhere and said if you want to play sports, you can play sports, even football, high risk sports, so-to-speak. new york decided to try it. region by region, they finally reopened. long island jumped into action within two weeks. how did it take place? how do the kids feel about it?

how do they feel about getting back on the field, six months after they were supposed to? we went out and found out. >> everybody was hopeful we would get the pandemic under control. they made the prudent decision to cancel sports and that was disappointing. >> what was it like when you found out when the season was canceled. >> we were really disappointed. >> i was really disappointed. >> i felt like devastated. >> you might be saying to yourself what's the big deal, it's just sports. only 2% of high school athletes get a scholarship offer anyway. it is a big deal. a study was done. players were asked how do you feel about the season being canceled. 68% said they feel anxiety, even depression. bottom line, sports matter. >> you learn about hard work, dedication. >> the way to cope with anything that's going on, how they make friends. >> it's nice to win, it's nice

>> if you want to know why it's not a canceled season but a modified seasons when it comes to sports in long island, it's because of laura kern and steve in suffolks, they have different plans but the same goal. >> we're getting some normal back to the kids. >> get the kids back on the court, back on the field. >> one of the things you're doing a little different, you're allowing the districts to react. >> we have 56 different districts, some are not allowing spectators, some are. some are requesting testing, some aren't. we feel they're trustworthy enough to make the decisions for themselves. >> we have protocols in place. we have weekly testing. the kids have to socially distance. they wear a mask off the court, when they're on the bench. can't have the fans like they did before. the kids are taking in this district, across the country, a character pledge. >> what's it like for the coaches. >> we're trying to figure out the best way to handle things. >> the protocols have been consistent.

it's been easy to follow. the kids have done a great job. >> it's part of life. you get thrown a curve ball and you have to figure things of out. >> you know what's worse than wearing a mask? not having a season. >> goal for the season. >> finish the last year with my best friends and enjoy every moment of it. >> so i think it's so cool, they said in august we're going to try to get you on the field in september. they canceled fall sports. they saved football, two weeks to get ready. soccer, playing in two weeks. put your uniform on. spring, we'll start a little late but you get your season in. the whole country should be doing this. they've taken the protocols in. and look, when you ask your players to do things, whether to show up on time or wear a certain sweat suit and where your uniform a certain way, they are used to it. they expect it. it's part of the process. now you ask them to wear a mask, ask them to distance, find a way to stay together and maybe not

go with the general population for your school during the season. they welcome the opportunity. what i also found is the kids were traumatized by not seeing their teammates, saying why do i work out, i'm not going to be on a team. and knowing we could do this because some are playing on club teams and they're told they can't play on their school teams which is more disciplined, more distanced, with more locker rooms and more control. the football coach i talked to saying why can't we play? i have no answer for you. have you to talk to the governors and mayors. there's no reason why the kids can't try. if worse comes to worse, a kid tests positive, a team can't play, it's called postpone the game, maybe you don't play it. you go back in. the nets had their best player, he's got to quarantine for a week. they kept playing. so we're willing to try. give them the opportunity to try to play.

and you were very efficient at it and in fact you've written a book on just that topic. but what do you make of these student debt holders who are saying you know what, we can't afford it, we need government help, help us pay this off, joe. >> yeah, it's totally ridiculous. i mean, again, i have proven that it can be done and i know everyone's not in my situation. i know people with 200, $225,000 in student loan debt and i absolutely sympathize with people. you have to get out there and work hard many at a times i was working two or three jobs, i still work two or three jobs right now, building two businesses and teaching full-time, adjunct teaching at another college. it can be done. people have to move forward and work and not expect the government to come in with free money. .steve: to that point, matthew, you say if they do something about student loan debt, why stop there. why not have the government pay off credit cards, why not have the government pay off your

many we have to ask ourselves, what is our common culture anymore, what is something we can unify around. if the answer to that isn't the united states of america and its symbols, then i think we're in a bad place. mark adopted the idea that the united states of america is irredeemably flawed, inherently racist and its symbols therefore are politically divisive. i think many disagree. we see the flag, the anthem, the united states of america for its best, not its worst. we know that this is the greatest accomplishment societally and human civilly civilization, the united states of america while flawed is the least racist country to inhabit the planet. when we see the flag and anthem we're proud it represents the best of what we can achieve, not perfection, but the best. that should bring us together. that's a unifying factor, not a dividing factor. i wish that mark and many nba players who i like, i root for,

home and i had to basically transition out of my i don't jo. i now contracted just a couple hours a week at that job. and my kids have been virtual since march 2020 so i'm pretty much the school supervisor at home as well as doing all these other things. i have been working since graduating college, so i was not able to stay out of the workforce for long. i was nervous about going back in. i just started recently with a local company that is very flexible and so i'm trying to fit in hours after the kids go to bed and all that. so it's been a challenge, definitely. ainsley: cindy, how about you? you live in california, four children. >> yes, i do. thank you for having me on the show, ainsley. i'm a full-time single working mom of four school age boys. my boys are all over, i have one

in elementary school, one in high school and one in junior high. and it's definitely been a struggle try to juggle professional career, running a household, manage distance learning and finding child care for them and with the three of them, they did return to school, a hybrid model. it was too difficult for me so i ended up putting my two younger children in a charter school and biden's school reopening plan to return kids to school one day a week does not address our children's needs or doesn't work for the working parent. private schools and child care facilities are able to be open five days a week, i don't understand why public schools can't open or return five days a week. it seems like the school choice bill needs to answer where statefunding follows the child,r parents that can't afford private school, tutor or home school, at least they'll have a

school voucher to get a quality education. why should public schools receive taxpayer money for education that kids aren't receiving anymore. ainsley: jennifer used to live in california. you moved to tennessee. and you have four children but you don't have any family around to help you. >> no. absolutely not. we moved here and the pandemic hit and it was really -- it hit us like a ton of bricks. we had to make some really tough decisions. unfortunately, we were in a state that was completely unprepared so march of 2020 our children did not go virtual. they just stopped school all together. ainsley: when did they go virtual? >> they didn't go virtual until the fall of 2020 and even then, they were completely unprepared. they sent computer home the day before school started. team teachers were frustrated, children were frustrated. they ended up releasing some

numbers. we went from having a number of failing students less than 20% to more than 50% of the students were failing and most of it was because you have to constantly hold your hand and walk your children through what they're doing. these kids are young. they don't know how to use microsoft teams or how to even open a new tab on a brand-new chromebook that they got the day before school. ainsley: right. a lot of us don't know how to do that either so we can't help them. >> absolutely. it was absolutely difficult. we had to make some tough choices. for our family, there was no way we would be able to do it unless somebody was able to stay home. ainsley: well, our thoughts and prayers are with you all. we do stories on kids getting back to school, trying to be advocates for the kids. we don't talk a lot about the moms and we all, if you're a working mom, if you're a single mom, it's really challenging and difficult and we love our kids so much. we want to give them a better life than we had. so congratulations for doing
