2:00 pm
was ever into miniature golf. we do know and do pray that he will be okay. this is mesmerized a nation. he's an iconic figure. just hope he's going to be okay. here's "the five." >> hello. i'm dana perino along with greg gutfeld, jesse waters, dagen mcdowell and geraldo rivera. 5:00 in the city. this is "the five." fox news alert. golf legend tiger woods hospitalized and is in surgery following a serious single car crash in california. the l.a. county sheriff is getting ready to hold a news conference at 6:00 p.m. eastern. we'll have that for you live. woods' agent said he suffered multiple injuries to his legs. new details are coming in. fox news chief breaking news
2:01 pm
correspondent trace gallagher is live in los angeles with the latest. >> this happened at 7:12 a.m. tiger woods was driving north on hawthorn boulevard going to the rolling hills estate. sources tell the los angeles times that the genesis s.u.v. tiger woods was driving was at a high rate of speed. tiger apparently lost control before he struck the center median. he then hit the center median, struck a sign through rolling hills estate and crossed over opposing traffic. investigators say he rolled once or twice and ended up on the embankment. firefighters said when they found him, roughly six minutes later, he was conscious and talking. because of the situation and the way you found the vehicle, he wasn't able to open the door and come out.
2:02 pm
we extracted him. we helped to assist him out of the vehicle. experts say that he was able to tell first responders to call his manager to come and grab his things. he was then taken to ucla harbor trauma center where he is now undergoing surgery to repair what is reportedly a compound fracture to his leg and a shattered angle. we don't know which leg or which ankle. his condition is reportedly serious. now, it appears that tiger had spent the past several days doing promotional videos and training events for the discovery network and the "golf" magazine and golf channel playing with people like basketball star dwyane wade and david spade. here's tying they are weekend talking about his recent back surgery and the recovery. watch. >> everybody wants to know how you're feeling what you're doing since you came off of your fifth back operation. feeling all right? >> feeling fine. a little stiff.
2:03 pm
i have one more mri scheduled so that we'll see if the -- starting over and doing more activities. still in the gym. doing the mundane stuff for rehab. >> he was headed to the rolling hills country cluck, which is about 4 1/2 miles from where the crash happened. he was headed there to meet drew brees and justin herbert. tiger was in the process as you heard recovering from the recent back surgery. he was hoping to get ready for the masters in early april. experts say that might have been a long shot. but tyinger is not somebody that you want to bet against. the bottom line here he was taken out of the vehicle, dana, using the jaws of life. that was not the case. they did use some tools to break that windshield. but he was taken out of the windshield.
2:04 pm
he was conscious. his condition right now is listed as serious and we're told his leg injuries are significant. dana? >> thank you, trace. we appreciate it. we'll be back in touch with you if there's more developments. and jesse, i know that you follow sports quite vividly and you're one of our resident golfers here. this is a tragic situation but hopefully he's under the best of care in ucla. >> i'm a terrible golfer. don't associate me with being good at golf. my heart goes out to tiger. i wish him a speedy recovery. someone that has had five back surgeries, four knee surgeries and to hear trace gallagher saying he's has infrastructures in his ankles and legs, i'm concerned with his ability to come back and play professional golf after this. he's had 15 major wins, one recently at the masters winning
2:05 pm
comeback player of the year honors and closing in on jack nicholas's 18 major wins. to come back from injuries like this and beat jack nicholas and win 18 majors seems impossible. but i'm not going to put it past tiger because he's come back from multiple injuries before. come back from scandal, carbon monoxide back from addiction. so i wish him well. there's no indication that alcohol was involved in any of this. so i don't want to speculate from. what i hear, he was going to the rolling hills country club to may again with a bunch of celebrities for network television. this is tough terrain. if you're unfamiliar with driving in that area of southern california, these are tight corners. these are winding hills. there's steep re-hari sreenivasan -- revaccines from all over the place. he was in aloner car from
2:06 pm
hyundai. they said he was speeding. we don't know if he was looking at his phone or what caused the accident. tells you when you get behind the wheel of a vehicle, you are putting your life at risk. and it is a dangerous world out there. this could happen to anybody. happened to tiger woods. you know a solo accident, no other cars involved. allegedly hopped the median and flipped one time. thank god he's okay. shows you how fragile life is. >> greg, jesse mentioned the comeback story. already had a significant comeback story in his life. a remarkable person. your thoughts now. >> yeah, i don't -- i'm not in to the comeback story stuff. that's the least interesting thing about this story to me. he lives. if he lives and survives, that's
2:07 pm
the most important thing. i wouldn't even be thinking about whether he has a comeback or if i survived a car accident where i rolled off down a hill my first question would be would i play golf again. >> i wasn't meaning that. i mean this as a -- >> i'm not talking about you. i'm talking about the generic mundane fog of media coverage that we get to to talk about something. i'll do my best to talk about something. so i think that jesse made a really good point that people haven't talked about. that have the unfamiliarity of car that is not your own. rental cars have a higher collision rate on cars that you own. if you couple that with unfamiliar roads, that could be a problem. i just think that -- i offer almost no wisdom in this other
2:08 pm
than i hope that -- he has a family that cares for him. i'm sure that they're greatful that he was able to talk and operate his mind. without question, that is the most important thing, that you can operate your mind after one of these things. if you don't have that, it sucks. >> apparently he told the police, please call my manager, come get my personal belongings. geraldo, your thoughts now. >> i disagree with greg. when i think to 2019 and the comeback, 43 years old, he had four back surgeries and the knee injuries and the scandals and everything else and he won the masters for goodness sakes. they gave hope to the old-timers about me not just about sport but life itself. somebody can pull themselves together to be a champion of the
2:09 pm
world. he's one of the most important sports figures in the history of the world. he's more than that. he integrated golf. he's a great civil rights champion. he's an example. he took that sport away from the fat old white men and said this is for i've. you can do this. it wasn't just about the sport. it was about how you endure so much pain. how you endure the regimen of being -- the rigorous workouts and so forth that he described in that clip that we played at the top. this man is a great man. a historic figure. golf aside. the first thing i thought two years later and he has this crash in the rented car and i think good points we made about the unfamiliarity of a rental car but he was obviously speeding. you don't miraculously cure
2:10 pm
yourself from everything. you're going like crazy, maybe you hit a hill and front wheels are off the ground and now you have no control. you hit -- you know, i visualize, 500 feet that car, no sign of brake skidding. he whacked that things and rolled it and rolled it and the air bags deploy and the fact that he's still breathing is another miracle in tiger woods life. we saw him with his kid, charlie playing the other day, just the kid -- not mimicking but reflecting the movements of his famous dad. so touching and heart breaking and feel just so badly about what happened. shows you there's no fairy tales in real life. >> yeah, hit everybody 4 house
2:11 pm
ago, a press conference at 6:00 eastern. bret baier will join us to help set that up. he knows tiger woods and knows the game of golf well and that area of california. dagen mcdowell, you thoughts now. >> it's appropriate we're still looking at this shot from the sky of tiger woods car accident. he lived his entire life in the public eye starting with age 2. on the mike douglas show with a golf swing that made grown men cry. being a 2-year-old, interacting with bob hope and jimmy stewart, who were on the program. soed -- the country around the world have celebrated his greatest victories with him. we've seen them play out and we have prayed for him during his lowest lows. the country and the world pray for him again this week. and i'm not speaking to tiger woods injuries because trace was saying that -- trace was reporting that there's a
2:12 pm
compound fracture to the leg and the ankle. i will say one thing about recovering from that injury. if the fracture has to be set with a rod or hardware, one of the biggest risks in recovery is infection. so they have -- at times they'll pack the rod with antibiotics. takes a long time to recover from, generally speaking about the compound fracture. this man has captured our fascination from the time he was a little boy when he could barely stand but he could still wield a golf club and we're rooting for him then and now. >> watching here the recovery of the vehicle that is happening -- this crash was reported for us. we found out the information four hours ago but happened at 7:00 a.m. california time. 76 standard time. that vehicle now being lifted out. one thing that is interesting, jesse, also just about how
2:13 pm
innovation over the years haas helped people survive crashes like this. obviously we don't know all that happened here and the safety measures in place. but it's a new s.u.v. on loan. it's remarkable how people survive. >> yeah, the air bags, deployed, thank gosh. greg likes to talk about the self-driving cars. you have no impact that would have had. when you're at a high rate of speed and the brakes are not deployed because there's no other car in your lane to signal that you're coming close to colliding with anything, you're going to fly at a high rate of speed and cross your fingers after that. thank god this was a big car, not a small car. if it was a smaller car, things could have gone worse. looks like they're taking it up
2:14 pm
and going to look at it and see what happened. driverer error, mechanical error. you don't know. there's still a lot of unanswered questions about the cause of the crash. >> greg, your thoughts on that in terms of -- you talk about risk a lot. all of us make calculations every day of what we're going to do about our daily lives. one of the things is getting behind the wheel of a car. >> yeah, how different this story would be and how different the tone would be if other people were involved. we have to also remind ourselves, this is a single person car wreck. one person injured. none of us know how. he might have suffered a seizure in his car. that's possible. he's in his mid 40s. could be an issue. if you're on the east coast, could have been an animal, which happened to me this weekend with a deer. so there's all sorts of things
2:15 pm
we can speculate about as we look at the pictures. when you look at that and say to yourself, the guy made it through that. for that, his children and his loved ones should be extremely happy and grateful and again, grateful that no one else was involved. >> trace gallagher, you're still with us. maybe give us a little bit of the -- what is the terrain like there as they get this car back on the recovery vehicle so they can do some investigation. >> a good question. everything to do with how the accident happened. if you haven't been here, the rancho palos verde area, you go into the hills. you get to the top. there's cliffs that overlook the ocean. you can see catalina, all the way up to malibu. the views are spectacular if anybody who has been to los angeles knows. what happened is, tiger was staying at a hotel on the higher
2:16 pm
part of the palace verdes peninsula. about a six mile drive from where he was. he came down a steep grade. hawthorn boulevard going north. a sweeping right-hand turn and left-hand turn. important to note he was driving a genesis s.u.v. that was on loan to him for the rivera country club. coming down. a big s.u.v. he came town and the reports are that he was in a high rate of speed. he went across the median. lost control. went across the median. he took out the rolling hills estate sign. then depending on what investigator you looked at, the license plate fell off. fluid looking all over the road. he rolled at least once, maybe twice. then you can see the telephone poll there, dana, next to where
2:17 pm
they're putting the car up. the investigators are saying there's another telephone pole 30 yards back from that and very lucky that while he was making his way into the brush he didn't hit a telephone pole. he did knock down a couple small trees. that really he didn't hit anything and crossed traffic at the same time. so what they'll do now, try to figure out what rate of speed. it's interesting, there were no skid marks at all. so when he lost control, he either quickly rolled, was not trying to avoid anybody else and went directly across oncoming traffic and didn't hit anybody. it's 7:00 a.m. even in pandemic times in los angeles, there's always traffic on the the road. lucky that he didn't hit any cars going across traffic. making his way up in there. when they got to him about six minutes later, there were a lot of reports that they used the jaws of life.
2:18 pm
that's not accurate. they didn't use the jaws of life. he was conscious, he was talking. they got him out through the window. they said he couldn't open the door. meaning he was trying to get out himself. he couldn't. so they helped get him extra kate him out of the window. he told them, contact my manager and have him get my things. that's when he was taken to the hospital. when they look at the car, they'll piece this back together and how high the rate of speed was and exactly how fast. they've got this down to a science. how fast he was going when he lost control and did he loss control as some sorts say just because of the speed or did something get in the way. did he try to avoid something. those are unknowns right now. we'll find out in the next couple days. >> it's a real possibility in terms of wildlife jumping out there. trace, quickly before we take
2:19 pm
around the table again. he was on his way to do some filming? >> yeah. professional events for discovery and working with the "golf" magazine, doing a two-day promotional stuff with them. what he was doing is he was out doing training and teaching videos. over the weekend, he worked with dwyane wade, worked with the comedian, david spade. this morning he was heading down to the rolling hills country club which is four miles from where the crash happened and hefts going to made with the hall of fame soon to be quarterback drew brees of the new orleans saints and the rookie quarterback for the los angeles chargers, justin herbert. he was going to do training videos with them. that's where he was heading this morning there were reports that tiger woods when he left the hotel this morning, that he was driving at a high rate of speed leaving the hotel property. so again -- >> maybe in a hurry. i'm a huge fan of david spade. i play no golf but i would have
2:20 pm
had a good time getting to know him better. geraldo, some additional thoughts from you now. >> i just like to ask trace, seems to me at 7:00 a.m. 0 -- first of all, one random thought. the first thing that crossed my mind when i heard tiger woods was involved in this serious accident, a picasso had been vandalized. he's a work of art. a magnificent athlete. what i'm curious about, 7:00 a.m., l.a., busy time. why have why not seen or you seen eye witnesses? where are the people that generally speaking flock to the sides of the street, particularly when someone this famous is involved in a car crash? you know, everyone is looking for any crash. here you have tiger woods, one of the most famous people.
2:21 pm
where are the crowds? i saw he skidded. i saw the coyote ran across. where are the people? are they on local television? >> they're on tmz right now. >> a great point. the point is when you're talking about the rolling hills and rancho palos verde, these roads, they drift down in to the greater south bay los angeles area where you have all kinds of traffic. these are more -- this is more of a rural suburban road up there. we can tell you when this happened, there was another car that pulled out and witnessed it. in the process of calling authorities. someone else came down and hit that person that pulled over. so gives you an idea of how those roads and how tough they are at some points to navigate. this thing, we didn't know it was tiger woods until hours after the fact. but six minutes after this accident happened, they shut down this road in both
2:22 pm
directions, which is why you didn't have the crowds you allowed to, geraldo. the firefighters were on the scene. so everything was shut down. the road is still shut down. they have to maneuver traffic in to people that live there as we get closer to rush hour. they shut that down. nobody knew who it was. so we didn't know for quite some time that that car involved tiger woods. there was some concern because he was late to his event this morning. people were worried. his manager was notified quickly. yeah, you would anticipate that at 7:00 a.m. in most of los angeles, you're going to see dozens if not hundreds of cars on the road. it's the pandemic. the traffic is not as bad. this is a more rural area, if you can say that world in los angeles. yes, to your point, geraldo,
2:23 pm
it's odd there were not more cars. the fact that he rolled across traffic is an indicator how lucky he was. he has significant leg injuries. anything but luck but clearly could have been more horrific. >> just watching now as the authorities are securing the vehicle, the wreckage on to the flatbed of that rescue recovery vehicle so they can take that for investigation. dagen, one thing interesting that we're talking about tiger woods is a son and a father, also a player. he's an individual. he's also an entire industry. people have affection for him and, you know, people turn to him for all sorts of reasons. in this case, in particular, i'm just thinking about that he is like not only a legend but also a huge brand. >> he is. that's part of what he was doing. even if he's not playing golf and this is for anyone of who is
2:24 pm
a superstar the way that tiger woods is, he's busy nonstop from the moment the sun comes up in the morning until when it goes down. he's working. he's working with his partners, his sponsors. he's always on the go even after having a fifth back surgery, he night not play in the masters but he's going, going, going. he's a one-man industry. surely can be exhausting. i just want topped point out, i watched the two-part documentary on hbo max about tiger. it goes through all of the sex scandal, everything that he's been through. the arrest for -- suspicious of driving under the influence. you see that. the most breathtaking thing that you go back to is watching him
2:25 pm
play golf. wild recovery shots. the fist pump. he does things on the course that nobody has been able to do and nobody ever will be able to do. that is worth going back. if you want to root for tiger, watch some of that old film. he's kind of the first youtube stars. that's how fall are familiar with the mike douglas appearance. you can go back and watch clips of it on youtube. >> even at 5, he was a feature in "golf" magazine. what you're watching now, the authorities are taking photographs inside the vehicle so that can be a part of the investigation. a press conference happening in 35 minutes from now that will be 3:00 p.m. pacific time.
2:26 pm
jesse, i think we have as much information as is available now. the sheriff's going to do a press conference at 6:00 p.m. our time. what else you think we can find out at that point? >> i don't know, dana. i'm getting more and more concerned about the leg injuries. you get all of your power from your legs. people think it's all in the hands or the shoulders. no. you're right now you have -- he's a right-handed golfer. put your right leg down and plant that hard. the right knee is critical. when you come down through the ball, opening your hips up as your arms come through with a lot of torque. someone like tiger who is very, very long off the tee, generates a lot of power in his legs. that's why he was really able to be so long. they had to tiger proof some golf courses as he was coming up in the pga.
2:27 pm
he was longer than everybody. to have a compound fracture of a leg and shattering of an ankle, you lose all of your power off of the tee. then if you have a bad lie somewhere, if you're in the bunker or something, putting your ankle in an awkward position if it's an uphill lie or something crazy like that, he will lose 1, 1 1/2 years at least to come back from injuries like this. he was already recovering from a back surgery. you just have to speculate. he will be losing so much time. he's not young anymore. golf is not the same as geraldo has talked about a bunch of old fat white guys playing. these are highly trained athletes. you should see the size of them. they never used to do anything like the exercises. so to compete at a high level the way he's used to competing
2:28 pm
at his age and to come back from injuries like that to both legs, i just -- it's such -- it's so hard for him to overcome at this stage of his career. if anybody can do it, tiger woods can do it. so i just have to pray for this guy. >> geraldo, you talked about that, tiger woods clearing hurdles. some of them self-caused. obviously this is an accident that he will try to come back from. >> you know, i think it was dagen mentioned his brand or you, dana, his brand. but that understates what is going on here. golf was a niche sport. people that like golf are from a social social set in society. tiger woods made golf a sport for everybody. i'm not talking about the racial
2:29 pm
integration. his ability to play and his beauty, the aesthetics of his swing, the superb nature of his improbable comebacks from the rough and the water traps and the sand traps and his shots around trees. he was a magician. my point is, in terms of commercial clout. so you go from this niche sport to this sport that son why world -- you see him on cbs competing against football and basketball. he made it gigantic. golf without tiger woods is -- won't go back to the niche. there's now a lot more effort to broaden its appeal but it won't be the same. i would bet that the ratings of a tournament with tiger are so much higher than the ratings of a tournament without tiger.
2:30 pm
i think that this is -- jesse's point is right. 45 years old, five back surgeries. with his legs mangled here in this terrible crash. it is unlikely that we'll have the joy of what -- when i called him a picasso earlier, i don't understate that. he's a human work of hart. as an investigative reporter, as we look at the car, the sheriff investigate what happens and i'm looking at the street, has anyone seen any skid marks? i don't know that anyone -- >> they reported there was none. >> you hit the brake. that's the first thing you to. you know, i haven't -- i don't want to be an amateur sluth -- >> maybe there's something that you could tell us. trace gallagher reported there
2:31 pm
were no skid marks at the scene. we have that information. put your investigator hat on and tell us what you think the sheriff's office is here taking pictures of. what will they try to find? >> this is the first thing they'll look for. because this is the kind of accident -- i'm not saying this is what happened. you asked me a question what the sheriff's are looking for. the accident of accident and we've all done it, here's a car. you're late, driving, going too fast and on your phone, texting. that's what happens. i think that's what they're looking for. obviously booze or pills or any of the nefarious things, although they said there was nothing salacious. when they said there was nothing salacious, they did not say he was going so fast that he could go 500 feet off the road before the car -- after rolling came to
2:32 pm
a halt with the air bags deployed. >> greg, he's had intense media coverage ever since he was a kid because he was this protege and this different golfer and came up through the ups and downs. the media has followed him. people want to read about tiger woods and watch tiger woods and -- >> really? nobody wants to hear about this for an hour. the fact is, fatalities, car accident are so mundane. they kill 50 people a year. we don't know what happened here. i get it. i also think that we're overlooking lee trevino that was a great golfer and chichi
2:33 pm
rodriguez that were not white. that's another story. but my prayers are limited. there's so many people that are suffering right now. i think sometimes the news news does a deep dive. honestly, i think some people might be like we get it. we get it. there's some bad stuff going on in this world. maybe we should focus on stuff. >> all right. >> i'm here to give my opinion. so i know everybody hates me for that. but sorry. >> nobody hates you. >> hold on, dagen. >> i hate him. >> of course you would, geraldo. this is your bread and butter. >> bret baier is with us. he will take over this coverage at 6:00 p.m. the press conference is expected to start around then. of course, we all know you're a big golfer and a friend of tiger woods. so let's get your thoughts now at 5:33 past the hour. >> first of all, you're going to
2:34 pm
have me follow greg? >> knock yourself out. >> i didn't know -- they didn't tell me you were coming on. i wouldn't have said that. >> hello, greg. okay. >> i'm in big trouble. >> this is why this is a bigger deal. yes, the best news that we heard and we should deal first of all in facts. that the sheriff's department says right now, not life threatening. jaws of life were not used. he was pulled out using an axe. he was talking. he said for his agent to get his stuff. he's in surgery according to his agent. we believe that it's a compound fracture and maybe two breaks on his leg. this is a huge story because he's bigger than life when it comes to golf and in sport in general. so the world is paying attention to something like this. so far so good as far as the news. greg really hits it on the point for his family, the fact that
2:35 pm
you look at that car turned over, they should be happy he's alive. >> exactly. >> you don't know what happened. we do know that he was running late. we know that for a fact from sources on the ground to the next shoot with drew brees, former new orleans saints q.b. and justin herbert, the q.b. for the l.a. chargers. they were doing these playing lessons that he had been filming as you guys mentioned, dwyane wade and david spade were monday. he hasn't been playing because of his back surgeries. he just had his fifth. he was trying to recover and talked about it with jim nantz sunday. it's a comeback story because he's had several comebacks. people are pulling him to come back from this. bill hemmer mentioned ben hogan. 72 years ago, ben hogan was hit
2:36 pm
by a bus while driving a car. they said he was done. broke both legs. it was a major thing for fans that watched ben hogan own the golf world. he came back and won again. tiger woods haas 82 wins on the pga tour. 15 majors hick jack nicholas at 18. there's people pulling for him in the golf world and all over the world because he's bigger than just golf. he's an interesting character in our culture. i guess that's why we're wall to wall but the good news is it's not life threatening. >> we have a live report from the hospital.
2:37 pm
matt finn? are you there, matt? hey, matt. what do you have? >> hi. >> hi, matt. you're talking to dana. how are you? >> hi, dana. >> you're outside the hospital. tell us what you know. >> yes. this is the harbor ucla medical center. as far as los angeles goes, it's just north of long beach. it's not too far from where the accident site is in rancho palos verde. this is likely the closest hospital that tiger woods could be rushed to. our understanding is he's being treated in the hospital and simultaneously a pandemic going on. a lot of security presence here. we saw people outside of the hospital with masks on. a security guard said they're family and friends that want to get in here to see their loved ones here. a growing awareness in the air when a high profile name is
2:38 pm
brought to a hospital. there's people stopping to take pictures. a lot of media showing up. the scene here is relatively organized. not a lot of chaos. we expect a press conference in a matter of minutes from the los angeles county sheriff's office that we're going to likely learn what happened apartment 7:00 a.m. when tiger woods s.u.v. was involved in what looked liked a horrific crash, dana. >> thanks, matt finn. trace gallagher has new information when tiger woods left his hotel this morning? >> picking up where brett left off there. we're learning from tmz that, you know, tiger was at thinks promotional events all weekend long. we talked about how he was with dwyane wade and david spade. this morning he was supposed to meet with hall of fame quarterback drew brees and justin herbert from the los angeles chargers, their rookie quarterback. he was supposed to meet with them doing training videos and teaching skills. they were running late.
2:39 pm
in the parking lot, leaving the hotel, tiger was speeding. in fact, one director said, you know, tiger was driving a little fast coming out of in parking lot. then you leave this hotel, it's not far, maybe 1/4 mile after you get out of the he tell you get to hawthorn boulevard and it winds down. it's not hairpin but winds this way and winds back that way. of course, you put that on top of the reporting by the l.a. times that police officers on scene say that tiger was at a high rate of speed. some of that is because he was going too fast. a lot of it is because it's steep in that area. if you're not paying close attention, you could be clipping on at 55, 60 miles an hour without noticing it and hi lost control before he hit the center divider. we know he hit it because the rolling hills estate sign was
2:40 pm
torn off. he went across traffic and rolled at least once, maybe twice, missed a couple of telephone poles, not by much. went in to the shrubs and broke a couple trees. we know he lost control because as he was going across the center divider, there were no skid marks. so the car was not on the wheels or he was in a bad position and happened so quickly that there were no skid marks at all. within a few seconds, he was on the embankment. the early painted picture is that he was in a hurry, he was running late and he was able 4 1/2 miles from his destination at 7:12. i don't know what time he was supposed to be at the rolling hills country club. at 7:12 he lost control and ended up on the embankment with serious injuries to his legs. >> yeah, tiger woods, they'll wait a few minutes if they need
2:41 pm
to. dagen, i cut you off earlier when we brought brett in. looks like they're doing the time touches to secure the vehicle before they take to it the location for more investigation. >> i was just going to tell greg, i can pray the warts off of a frog. i can pray -- >> you making fun of my looks? >> i can pray for everybody. that being said, jesse brought up -- i don't know if bret is is the with us. jesse brought up how golfers are still fit these days. is bret still with us? >> you want to comment how fit golfers are? >> not this one. but yeah. >> tiger roads is the player that shepherded in this kind of like modern golfer. tiger was and still is, talking the jim nantz about working out despite having back surgery.
2:42 pm
he was buff. you couldn't -- you could tell, you know, underneath the golf shirt. he ushered in this era of the golfer being an incredibly fit athlete. >> dagen, now we know why you watch golf. >> yeah. >> i think. >> shes right. she's right. he changed the game tremendously. he was the guy that changed what golfers were. not only when you talk about being african american and opening up the whole black community to golf, but and his physical appearance, how he held and practiced, he was like nonstop. that's really what got him back from his lowest point, dagen. you make a great point. tiger woods ushered in that change. that's where you get the brooks koepkas, the dustin johnsons, you get guys that are working in the trailers every day with their weight trainers changing the look of golfers. >> jesse waters, we haven't
2:43 pm
heard from you. let's talk to you about that aspect of golf as you said -- i know you do golf. you said you're a terrible golfer but you follow the sport. >> i do. i just can't help think about the similarities between how tiger changed golf and how michael jordan changed basketball. jordan transformed the sport in terms of air time. he was able to hang in the air and float. really walk on the sky with his dunks and his ability to hang in the air by the rim. tiger woods did the same thing with golf. his fitness regimen, his power and length all of the tee. his youthfulness. you know, the way he reacted when he sank a putt or did something on the back nine on sunday. it kind of -- it changed the way that people paid attention to the game of golf. i started watching golf when
2:44 pm
tiger came on to the scene. who wants to watch golf when you're 16, 17 years old, there's no action. when tiger came on the scene, you wanted to see him wearing red and fist pumping as he sinks putts and racks up the wins. i also want to talk about the importance of having your own drivers. i know it's very nice to have your own vehicle and they gave him a loaner vehicle, hyundai, because he was at the tournament. you're independent. you can do your own thing and make up time the way you see fit. in an area where you don't know, in a terrain in southern california where there's tight winding roads and ravines, you can look at your phone and be in the back seat and say i'm running late. you don't have to worry about navigating a road that you're

2:49 pm
>> the l.a. county sheriff is set to hold a news conference at the top of the hour. tiger woods is in surgery after a single car accident. he suffered multiple injuries to his legs and reportedly suffered compound fractures. trace gallagher has more. >> the biggest thing in this news conference is some specifics. we want to know. the los angeles times has been reported as we have reported that the bliss are saying that tiger woods was coming down hawthorn boulevard, making the sweeping turns as a high rate of speed. we don't know the sheriff will talk about that. it's one of those things unless they have it down and know for a fact and they've done their investigative stuff, he may not release that. you want to look for that, look
2:50 pm
for timeline. the sheriff is talking ant where tiger was going. he was going to the rolling hills country club. what time was he supposed to be there? who was he meeting? when he left the hotel, were there any witness reports about his behavior. was he driving too fast as one director said he was. what about that road is so tricky for those that haven't navigated it before? you talked with jesse about the fact that tiger woods drives himself. you go back for years and years. it's one of the things that has gotten him in trouble. he doesn't like drivers. he likes to drive himself. i remember visiting family in orlando and tiger woods would be in the gym. he hangs out with people. he doesn't want to be in the back of a car. he wants to be a part of society. so they'll talk about things like that. in this case, what happened after they found the car and
2:51 pm
pulled tiger woods out. that's what the questions will be based on, dana. >> dagen had a question for you, trace. >> trace, tiger woods is at harbor woods ucla. any word if he would be transferred up to ucla reagan? >> ucla harper woods is a very good hospital. it's a trauma center. great responders there, great doctors. the orthopedic team that went in is the best of the best. so you know before they did anything, they consulted and he got the best of the best. it's southern california. some of the best orthopedic surgeons in the world are here. and some of them were working on tiger woods this morning. >> thanks, trace for that. bret baier, going to bring you in, we have our reporter matt finn at the hospital. we'll try to bring him before the top of the hours when the -- matt, are you available for a quick update?
2:52 pm
let's hear it. >> yeah, more and more media are showing up. look at the images of the crash that happened not far from here, it's easy to say that tiger woods is lucky to be alive. that's what a sheriff said a short while ago. perhaps that tiger woods escaped death. there's well-wishes coming in. jada pinkett smith tweeted that he was just with woods yesterday. david spade, actor comedian tweet add picture of them together. and justin thomas that this to say. >> it hurts to see one of your closest friends, you know, getting in an accident. i just hope he's all right. just worried for his kids. i'm sure they struggle. >> and we will keep you updated from outside of the hospital here in torrence, california. there thank you, matt.
2:53 pm
watching all hour we've been watching how the authorities are putting the wreckage of the vehicle on the recovery, on the truck there to take it for more investigation. bret baier coming up in seven minutes from now. you'll take over for "special report" and a press conference. what are you expecting there? >> we'll take it live and bring you the whole press conference. there's other news today. we'll do that in in just a minute. to greg's report earlier, you look at that car and you just hear what matt finn just said about the sheriff saying that tiger woods is lucky to be alive. having been in a big accident with my family, it is a life-changing event to be able to get out of something like this. the fact that this is nonlife threatening and he may -- we don't know what the extent of his injuries are and the surgeries that we've heard about. that is the biggest thing about this story. a lot of these things happen
2:54 pm
every day. this happened to happen to the world's biggest golfer. a big cultural figure that everybody pays attention to. >> final thoughts from everybody here at the virtual table. geraldo, start with you. >> first, we're blessed to have bret and trace gallagher to bring us the news. proud to be associated with us. it's everybody like greg. i love his wit. i want to address a point about why we're focused on this event when we have so much else going on in the world, not the least of 500,000 dead from covid and touching many people very up close and personally. there's billions of people on this planet. six, seven billion people.
2:55 pm
he's a guy that out of that population floated up to be the best there ever was and i think the best there ever will be. to fight all of the things that he had to fight, the inner demons and the handicap to his body in the -- for him to be in that superb athlete and for everyone to pay attention to him, you know, it's -- yes, there's greater stories, yes, more important things in the cosmic sense. you want the well-being for everybody. this man was special. he was special in a way that history will regard him. so i think that our homage to him by paying such close attention to this disaster is fitting. >> he's not dead, geraldo. we're talking like he passed
2:56 pm
away. he escaped death. he lost control of his car before he hit anything. he should consider himself very lucky to be alive and he should consider himself lucky that he didn't hurt anybody else. nobody else got hurt. we have a challenge of doing this show wall to wall stuff, having to avoid unspeakable truths and instead do this kind of repetitive salutation and grand pronouncement. let's inject some honesty in this thing. my father-in-law died in his car on christmas eve. he wasn't a world famous golfer. but you know what? he was a great man and i'm glad i said it.
2:57 pm
>> we don't know if this is a catastrophic injury where we'll never be seeing tiger play golf on sunday again. these injuries, he will recover from. do what tiger does best. that's win. and i guess to greg's point and to geraldo's point, sports just brings us together as americans. this would be like if michael jordan was in a near death accident or lebron james or tom brady. brings all people together from all backgrounds, all political parties. you have a great interest to see is this guy okay. is he going to make it. and your heart goes out to him. tiger is different. tiger, you bring in a racial angle. this history and this country is so i guess divided by race. tiger united races. he brought everybody together and he was able to navigate the
2:58 pm
racial issue. it was such savvy. professionalism. maturity that everybody likes tiger no matter who you are and you is sit on the couch and watch him win and enjoy those moments together that brings us together as americans. i think that explains the interest a little bit. >> that's true. like obviously i'm not -- i'm a very well knowledgeable sports fan. of course as everybody knows, i don't watch a ton of out. i love the story of tiger woods. i loved it when he was at the tournament with his son recently. dagen mcdowell, a final thought from you. >> i went to wake forest which is where arnold palmer went, lanny watkins. worked on a golf course after i graduated from college. tiger woods was somebody that made people want to play golf and watch golf who probably never even thought about it before.
2:59 pm
he made people care about golf because his play was so breathtaking. we watched there accident scene, await news on his surgery, prognosis. we want him back on the golf course. after he came back and won his last masters, his fifth masters victory and 2019, i mean, that would make a grown man eye watching that. for him to embrace his son after he won. that's what we all hoped for. glad he's okay. >> nonlife threatening. the surgery is underway. matt finn is at the hospital. we have the wreckage of the vehicle, being moved right now through rancho palos verde, california in southern california. driving a genesis s.u.v. this happened around 7:00 a.m. california time. there's this press conference in a few minutes. bret baier will take it live, the l.a. county sheriff will
3:00 pm
have an update with any other information that they have. "special report" is next. i'll turn it over a few second early, brett. >> thanks. good evening. welcome to washington. i'm bret baier. tiger woods in a south california hospital after a serious single vehicle accident near los angeles this morning. this afternoon the governorer was in surgery. he has multiple leg injuries. we are awaiting a briefing from the sheriff of los angeles county. we'll go there live. the latest from trace gallagher from los angeles. good evening, trace. >> good evening. after 7:00 a.m. is when it happened west coast time. tiger woods left his hotel and left his hotel and g
