respond to, stephen miller, former senior advisor and director of speech writing to president trump. steven, thank you for being here tonight. first, cpac is always something conservatives look forward to, lots of big things happen everything the year, what's your reaction to the first day? >> thanks for having me on. what you heard today at cpac was a very optimistic forward-looking vision for the republican party at i think what you will see on sunday when the president speaks is he will outline that same optimistic vision like only he can and to give a concrete, detailed plan for how the republican party is going to win that the midterms in at two years and think about the white house in four years. >> katie: there's been a lot of talk about president trump speech as a first big speech is going to give one after he left office. you brought up 2022, what is his message and what does he think that republicans should be doing on the campaign trail to stop the barrage from the left now that they have full control in washington? >> he's going to outline a

blue-collar working class conservative populism that stands up to china, stands up to big tag, stands up to the donor class and stands for working people. one of the big contracts he's going to draw is a course on the immigration fiasco that's happening before our very eyes right now. when donald trump left office, we had the most secure bird comic border american history. it was safe, it was under control. drugs were being kept out, illegal immigration was being kept down and the whole hemisphere benefited as a result. in just four weeks joe biden has created a humanitarian catastrophe. in the main victims this catastrophe are illegal immigrant youth who are being smuggled into our country in record numbers because of joe biden's policies. he did that. that's because of his policy changes and i think it's morally reprehensible. >> katie: we will get to that illegal immigration in just a second, because you are an

expert on that anything covering it for many years, we watch this crisis come and go as president trump implement at a number of policies to make it stop and now it's back. but in terms of what the president needs to focus on and conservatives need to focus on moving forward, we heard a lot about a civil war inside of a republican party but when i looked at what happened at cpac today that's not what i see. i see a bunch of happy warriors coming together with a number of principles that they share and they are trying to pin a number of democrats as the party of elitists and the party of tolerance and it seems to be working in a lot of ways. >> i have news for you. the civil war republican party is over. it was waged four years ago when donald trump won the nomination. the new working class republican party is here to stay, it's not going anywhere. in this idea that we are going to bring back the chamber of commerce republicanism is preposterous. that's over with.

the policies of endless wars, the policies of outsourcing, the policy is uncontrolled migration, the policies of catering to the donor class, that is the past. donald trump and his policies of a working-class party, that's a future and that is here for the long haul. steve linick brought up the crisis of illegal immigration that we are now seeing happening at the southern border. just a month into joe biden's new administration and we are already seeing that dhs is in panic mode. they are predicting that they will have 13,000 unaccompanied minors, over the border in may which is just a short number of months from now. you have the white house press secretary trying to backtrack this idea that they are not using shelters which they once called the concentration camps and now we are also seeing which is the news of the day that the biden administration is now going to use taxpayer money to fly unaccompanied minors at the border to family members or adults who are living in the united states already. and as you know many of them are

already here illegally. >> this is mind-boggling. what the biden administration is doing is they are effectively facilitating illegal child smuggling. they are facilitating illegal human trafficking. you have violent cartels that are taking young people illegally across multiple countries and dropping them off at our border for the purpose of delivering them into the interior of the united states and the u.s. government is completing the last leg in the smuggling operation. this is heinous. under our administration when we left office we had a policy in place to humanely reunite illegal immigrant youth with their families back in their home countries. in guatemala, el salvador, honduras. instead what the biden administration is doing is keeping these youths from ever going back to their home country

and relocating them in the united states. the message to the whole world is anyone under the age of 18 can come here illegally and stay. that is wholly unsustainable, reckless and it is morally depraved. >> katie: stephen, we always talk about fairness and when it comes to illegal immigration and what americans are paying for and a burden to the taxpayer and now we are learning these shelters which the left was calling concentration camps when the trump administration open them as overflow facilities in 2019, we are hearing now that unaccompanied minors are being taught, they are in schooling, they are being given an education but yet we have schools all over the country that are still closed because joe biden is capitulating to the teachers union and giving into their extortion. your comment on that? >> it's the shameless hypocrisy of the left. the idea that it's unsafe for american students to go to

school but we will open schools on the border for illegal alien youth from all of planet earth. and here's the thing. we all believe in the humane treatment of people who cross the border unlawfully, especially young people. but let's be very clear. a policy of releasing all illegal immigrant youth into the country on a functionally permanent basis is an incentive for child smuggling, a reward for child smuggling and it the result will be an endemic level of global child smuggling. that's fundamentally immoral and wrong, getting young people badly hurt and enriching criminal cartels that prey upon innocent people across the western hemisphere. and this whole policy whether it's on energy or the economy, whether it's on migration, joe biden is paying back his wealthy donors instead of standing up for working people.

of our conservatives have felt hopeless. they've been grieving. that's been a very tough time for the movement and for the first time in starting to see that glimmer of hope that they know that despite continuous, that we cannot be stopped and we will not be shut down and we will not be silenced. that has been the strongest message that i have seen thus far here at cpac. >> katie: selena, there's been an enormous shift politically about the working class. the democrats used to have a monopoly on the working class and president trump change that. we are seeing that message be played out at cpac and especially now that we seen this assault on blue-collar jobs whether it's the keystone pipeline or john kerry saying that oil and gas workers should just go make solar panels, what are you seeing from the people that you work talk to all the time in places like pennsylvania? you are the best person that always has an ear on the ground to the people it affects the

most. >> thank you for having me on. i thought it would be really interesting, to mercedes point, people have been stealing down since that incident and they have sort of lost that aspirational voice. right, they lost their champion. and they felt -- they knew what they were part of but they didn't -- they weren't feeling very hopeful. so i decided to go and drive around pennsylvania and ohio the last couple of days and listen to voters and to talk to them sort of in a parallel with cpac. it was really fascinating to me to see how excited people were. people who have never put cpac on in their lives were really into watching the speakers, really uplifted by the talk of liberty, the talk of having the facts and not just of the blue-collar worker but also the larger community and suburban voters as well as blue-collar workers.

and that coalition that i think many people predicted what collapse is still incredibly strong out there. i was in the east liverpool ohio and a brand-new restaurant that just opened in the small river town and talking to the small business owners and their -- people were excited about cpac, they were excited about the speech and they were excited about the coalition. conservative populism isn't going away. >> katie: mercedes, that's so true because it's about the principles that unite everybody regardless of your gender and race. there are so many things i heard today in the speech is at cpac that talk about things and ideas that can uplift everybody. >> there's no question that there is this focus of the love of america and i think that's what you are seeing across the board. it's understanding that it is standing up for founding

principles of our god-given rights of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. understanding that government is not going to make you happy, but we have to protect our family and ensure that our families keep their rights. what we are seeing more and more is a far left trying to take away those rights and so it was really an interesting conversation on liberty. that's one of the things we talked about and that is protecting the constitution but more so off policies that have worked. that of lower taxes, lower regulation, ensuring that we stand up against big tech and we stand up against china. those are the policies that worked and worked under president trump's administration with his america first agenda and let me tell you something. we are ready to go again to ensure that the socialists are stopped and that we are able to win again. >> katie: has selena mentioned, the freedom to open a business without the government

saw another stunning act of hypocrisy as the biden administration carried out an air strike on i iranian backed militias in syria without congressional authorization, which, harris said wasn't okay when trump deployed similar air strikes back in 2018. she said, i'm deeply concerned about the legal rationale of last night strikes. the president needs to lay out a conference of strategy in syria in consultation with congress. here now is morgan ortagus, state department spokesperson for president trump and david 428, under president obama. morgan, i will start with you, great to see you again. i know that there is hypocrisy here, kamala harris should maybe take some of her own advice and pass it along to president biden. what do you have to say? >> listen. i said this earlier on "outnumbered" and i will reiterate it again. anytime we kill a terrorist it's a good day in america and i

support the move by the biden administration. however i want to know what their strategy is dealing with the militias throughout the middle east? remember this terrorist group that the biden administration with dr. are supplied, trained, funded and equipped by the iranian regime and hezbollah which is a terrorist organization that we the trump administration designated in iraq. we clearly laid out our strategy which is a maximum economic pressure campaign against the regime in iran and we were holding them accountable any time they went american troops or american diplomats in iraq. so, what is the biden administration's ultimate strategy? i'm glad they are doing everything they can to protect americans and i support that but if this is just a way to backslide and go back into the jcpoa then that's a losing strategy. >> katie: david, what about that because we know already that the biden administration

campaign with iran and their strategy has really nothing to do with maximum pressure considering they are already talking about taking off sanctions. i also agree it's a good thing to respond to attacks on americans especially in the region and elsewhere. when it comes to the ledge of strategy, what are we thinking about? >> first of all, it's nice to be back on with morgan and she did a great job as the state department spokesperson. so i support the air strike that biden did last night on syria, was proportional and justified and i also support of the first air strike that trump did in syria which was april 7th, 2017, which was also justified because they are chemical weapons used. i do think there's an internal debate right now that there were probably some people who didn't want to do these air strikes last night because i do want to go back into the nuclear agreement with iran.

there are others that recognize as morgan said that the shiite militias in iraq can become very powerful and they are backed by iran. unless we do something about that they will continue to destabilize iraq and destabilize syria. we have to have a plan to deal with that growing strength of iran in iraq. my understanding is there are biden officials that were surprised at how much stronger those shiite militias became in the last four years since they were in government in the obama administration. so there needs to be a plan as morgan said but this was a good start. if we want to go back into a nuclear agreement we have to make sure that it also addresses iran's support for destabilizing militias in iraq and syria. >> katie: morgan, you are taking the high road and not diving into the political angle of this but we have seen the politicization of foreign policy and national security over the past four years and i'm glad tonight we can see some agreement on the issue of retaliating against attacks on

american interest, but moving forward, do you think that they have a good strategy? >> it's a great point that david just brought up, you are talking about regarding the strategy. it's not just shiite militia in iraq. i ran has proxies not only in iraq but they have it in yemen, they have it in syria and even in afghanistan, at lebanon. you can look throughout the region where there is a presence and iran uses whatever money they have left in order to fund, equip and train terror groups and proxy groups that will wreak havoc in the region and that's why it's important to have a clearly stated and cohesive strategy. i know the biden administration is a month end but they are using some of the authorities that we also used to conduct these air strikes. the biden team, they will all need to determine what kind of embeddedness ration are they taking.

legacy. one of those conservatives is madison cawthorn, unduly republican congressman from north carolina who gave his first speech at cpac earlier today. madison, thank you for joining us tonight. is this your first cpac or your first speech at cpac. >> this is my first time actually coming to cpac. i do not feel like i'm worthy of being compared to the great rush limbaugh at all, i'm just like you and he was a incredible mentor to myself. >> katie: this would have been my 11th cpac, i'm very proud of that. i learned a lot being a young conservative there. but let's talk about you. you are new in congress, how's the energy and who's there? >> i will tell you, we have successfully renamed a post office, and that's about it. it is so dysfunctional in washington, d.c., and this is a time when americans actually need leadership. they need their representatives

to be working for them and not playing politics and that's all that we are seeing that's going on with nancy pelosi. why do they need congress when they can rule through executive order? >> katie: so when it comes to the future of the republican party, you are obviously one of the youngest if not the youngest member of congress. when it comes to being a happy warrior, what do the conservatives have to do to get back into the winning column and take back the house in 2022? you have to have to be against the left but also provide a number of policy positions and things for people to be hopeful for? >> i think it's going back to our founding principles and this is not where i believe the republican party has veered off of its course in the decades before when we actually started getting involved in social issues? when i think if the republican party, the conservative movement is all in that government and we are truly focused on making sure that we will defend our liberties and make sure we will have a great moral foundation to stand upon and we will use all of that to create an incredible

economy and incredible country. that requires very little governance because it's a moral people and they can cover themselves. i think being deceived by this outreach culture that has been told that conservatives are racist or bigoted, that can't be further from the truth. where are the big ten party but we are also the party that welcomes diversity. we want to have a debate with you, we don't want to cancel you. >> katie: you brought up the idea of conservatives governing themselves but in her speech today you talk specifically about personal responsibility and being responsible for your own actions and being capable of doing that in order to move yourself forward so that everyone can live their own lives and live out the way that they want to. so how do you get that message back into your generation when a lot of us have been taught that personal responsibility is not something you have to take on board? >> you are absolutely right. the way that we do this is by

packaging the message of personal responsibility in a way that makes sense. it's one that encourages people and inspires people to rise up and be a conservative. this should be the highest standard of society and not just a low bar saying if you believe in liberty you can join our party. no. if you want to be a millionaire you can be in our party, if you want to lead a ministry or run a nonprofit, come to our party. we will have dealer regulation and allow you to live your life on your own terms. get rid of capital gains taxes, get rid of the federal income tax across the board so you have more of your own money in your pocket. these are things that everyone can understand and i think the bedrock principle that we need to get back to his dining room politics. all politics are local and if we are speaking to those young families that are sitting around their dinner table and effective change in the areas that actually matter to them than that's going to bring the next generation back to our party. >> katie: so when it comes to -- the republican party is a

big ten party and has certainly expanded under president trump. when it comes to again taking back the narrative, when it comes to the left saying white supremacists and bigots, how do you not just make statements but get people to change their votes for the party affiliation? >> i think it's meeting them where they are. you sit in bubbles that are completely conservative your entire life you will never get to effect change with a moderate or a liberal. but if people are willing to have conversations again, instead of canceling your neighbor, communicate with them. go have conversations with people who disagree with you. we have a common sense policy that actually makes sense. so instead of going for the jugular and attacking people on a personal level, if we could get people to come together and have a conversation i think we would see hordes of people come to the republican party. unfortunately that's the exact opposite of what the democrats wanted to do. you saw two of my colleagues

branch? >> of course. look, as far as they are concerned they wanted their way or no way whatsoever so they are attacking this from every single angle possible. during the election date through a ton of money toward the election to get the people that they wanted to in office and now they are doing the exact same thing trying to literally create a position within an administration that will function and focus on creating more gun control laws 24 hours a day, seven days a week. that should tell people something about what their true goal really is and for all the people in the middle who are trying to figure out which way to go on this issue, understand it has nothing to do with saving lives. if it was, we would talk about what are the underlying issues causing these problems instead of talking about how to further restrict rights in order to, i guess in more ways than one figure out how to fix a problem that honestly doesn't really exist to the degree they are trying to make it out to be.
