tried the filibuster the voting rights act, since we talk about history really what is going on beneath the surface here in the senate as it used to be a very clubby and tradition bound place in the tradition and sense of tradition has really been receding and under attack all the way back to the 1980s when democrats knocked out ronald reagan supreme court nominee robert bork, they have been fighting over supreme court nominee ever since, they did this thing called the nuclear option under harry reid, another democrat clearing the way for lower-level nominees to get in and both parties really have been chipping and chipping away at the tradition of the senate for many years and we just have not seen that reversed and we

part because the americans are divided and when we talk about getting things done i think it's very hard to get things done because the americans disagree on a lot of issues, on immigration on voting rights, on taxes and all kind of issues and the senate traditionally was there to move slowly on these issues to ensure there was a liberation debate and while both sides have done over the last 40 years since the 80s when bork was knocked down, they have been chipping away at the hurdles to having debates in reaching compromise. eric: the only thing both sides would agree on is the senate which seems for about it. john, the wall street journal, always good to see you and thank you for your insight will keep on following what happens to the filibuster. arthel: they are changing it to gumbo -- thank you eric new york
