when we shoot for the moon, we plant our flag on it. i am honored to lead our national space council. >> but even democrats are saying it's time for vice president harris to visit the southern border. >> will you urge vice president harris, who has been tasked with handling this crisis, to visit the border? >> of course. of course. >> why wouldn't she have gone yet? >> i don't know. she had maybe we have a few other things to deal with like the pandemic and everything else, so i'm not going to point fingers at her in the sense -- i hope that she will go down to the border. i hope that we can have a comprehensive, whole of government approach to what we need to do to have a humane immigration system. >> but harris, who told us she would be going soon to mexico and guatemala, no plans on the books. lawrence, let me start with you. does vice president harris -- you -- who says she wants to go to negotiate a el deal to the

northern trithe angle countries -- triangle countries, does she lack credibility and she simply will neither acknowledge the crisis for what it is and, certainly, make that trip to the border? >> well, there's a credibility problem on two fronts, and we saw this when the president gave his interview with nbc. first of all, he blamed the crisis on the transition team, right? s this is where they were begging for these transitions. what we know to be true is the state department -- and i've talked to mike pompeo about this, weeks ago i talked to morgan orr morgan ortugas, they briefed them on what could potentially happen if they gave up those agreements with the countries. also they told them, look, there's going to be the a surge. the biden administration is saying this is a staff thing problem. many of us, griff, you've been to the border, i've been to the border about five or is six times. there's been a staffing problem for years, but they were still able to get things under

control. what we know to be true is because of his policies and his rhetoric on the campaign trail, he has invited folks across the border illegally, and they don't want to take accountability. also in that interview, griff, he said that they had it under control. well, maybe they should go visit so they can see the rapid crossing that is happening, the kids that are drowning in the laredo sector because they're trying to cross the rio grande river. they don't have any credibility on this. and i'll also say this, that former president -- former vice president biden had a much different position on this. former senator biden had a much different position on this. now that he's the president of the united states and the progressives have taken over his party, it seems that he's changed his tune on border security. >> lawrence, you're absolutely right, it's not under control. every single border patrol agent i've talked to, and i've covered this more than ten years, say that it's never been this bad,

at this level. so, tammy, let me ask you, they're clearly not in denial. they know what is happening, but they won't call it a crisis, they won't deal with it. and as lawrence mentioned, i spent the majority of the last month on the border but also in juarez are, in tijuana, so there's no doubt that this administration is getting the reality of the situation on the ground, and they're choosing to say something entirely different. what is the end game? why are they doing this? >> well, they're doing this -- and governor abbott touched on it a little bit, is that they don't want to fix the problem. they don't want to accidentally trip over a solution. and if you go there and you have to say things, then that puts you more on the front, obviously. so joe biden and everyone associated with him, they need to stop lying and start to fix the problem. this is the problem with the left. the energy put into making things up takes all their energy. and that's, that's a major problem not just on this issue,

but other issues. it's the literally presenting a false framework for what is going on. now, of course at the same time you've got issues that we've seen get fixed under president trump. we saw what the difference was. the remain in mexico policy, it's no accident that his first order, one of his very first executive orders of reverse the remain in mexico policy, and that held thousands of people who immediately came and were near the border, immediately came over the border. that is no accident. so this is what they want. they don't mind it. they want to just move along and try to kind of fake ware way through it. -- fake their way through it the american people deserve better. and if they're lying about what we see directly every day, what else are they lying about? this, again, is like potato chips. you don't behave this way once. you do it over and over and over again. you eat a big bunch -- at least i do -- all at once if you're eating chips.

this is about character, approach and agenda, and it's a disaster for the country. >> let me play for you, nicole, before i come to you, president biden blaming president trump for the border crisis. take a listen to what he says. >> the failure to have a real transition, because we didn't find out they had fired a whole lot of people, that they were understaffed considerably. look, it's way down now. we've now gotten control. >> and you've got "the new york post" with an editorial saying that joe biden needs to stop lying about the cause of the border crisis and start fixing it. so, dr. nicole saphier, as a doctor, if you literally lied to me about my medical condition and told me just the opposite of what i can see if it were a broken arm or leg or something else, i would lose faith in you, right? [laughter] i mean, how much do you think this administration is at risk losing credibility on other issues once the american people can see for themselves that they're not being honest about the situation at the bordersome.

>> well, let's be honest, griff, maybe we can give him the benefit of the doubt. maybe he just doesn't know because they haven't had a face at the border at all. listen, i expect republicans to criticize joe biden on just about anything, but republicans can sit this one out because the democrats are already calling them out. senators krysten sinema as well as mark kelly from arizona who know what's going on. that's my home state. they're calling the biden administration out for not doing enough. they're saying, no, things aren't better. i've spent about seven years study thing during medical school, residency, working at the county hospitals, i saw firsthand the def station of these illegal crossings. i see people being dropped off on the curbs unconscious at our emergency departments. it is devastating, what is going on on our southwest border as well as in the entire northern triangle. now we have vice president tweeting about her moon thing, i mean, the least she can do is show her face at the southwest

one of the largest unions in the country. now any mails detail how the aft also lobbied the cdc on school reopenings. senior director for health issues with aft kelly trotner said, quote: thank you again for fried's rich discussion about forthcoming cdc guidance and for your openness to the suggestions made by our president, randi weingarten, and the aft. we were able to review a copy of the draft guidance document over the weekend and were able to provide some initial feedback to several staff this morning about possible ways to strengthen the document. we believe our experiences on the ground can inform and enrich thinking around what is pact if bl and -- practicable and prudent in future guidance documents. what does this e-mail reveal about the control the teachers unions have over policy? well, you know, it's not uncommon for the cdc to reach

out to nongovernment entities when they're putting forth policies that are going to affect such entities. however, that's not what's really happened here, tammy. it seems that you have a lobbying powerhouse who have put forth their own opinions into public health recommendations, and they seen say in the e-mail that they consider themselves thought leaders and because of their on-the-ground experience if that they can provide some insight into this. but some of the verbiage that got taken from their suggestions into the updated guidance was regarding variants and community transmission. i didn't realize that they had on-the-ground experience with this. >> yeah, yeah, exactly. we've been hearing, we've been, you know, hammered with this believe the science, only take the science, it's the science that a matters. and we agree with that. the teachers union, they're not scientists, unless something happened, and this is not science. you know, it's collusion, that's the difference. so this is an agency in particular that is supposed to

be, and biden says it all the time, listen to the science. then that's what we want to do. and this is, of course, the agency that is supposed to lead us in that framework. so when instead it is opinion and politics and a desire to have what you want to move forward because, look, as long as schools remain closed, the more power they're going to have and arguments about how much money they've wanted in the covid relief bills. and they're just looking at -- look, this is about power for the left, not just the teachers unions. that's separate from the teachers themselves. this is about the unions wanting more power. unions are finding americans are not liking that kind of manipulation. for this agency that is supposed tonight -- the center for disease control, not thought control, disease control, to allow lobbyists and partisans and politicians and advocates and activists to control what we're told the to do? it is unacceptable, it's collusion, it is dangerous, and

this is exactly why we continue to lose trust in this government and what these scientists keep telling us. >> well, and, griff, from one parent with school-aged children to another, something that i found very frustrating was in the highly anticipated february 12th updated school reopening recommendations from the cdc, out came that 6-foot distancing regulation. therefore, a lot of schools said we still can't open because we can't accommodate the 6th feet. this despite the fact -- 6 feet. even dr. walensky herself in a 2020 e-mail to a hometown mayor saying 3 feet of distance is sufficient when in school if children are wearing masks. i mean, you see, griff, it seems that they continue to be way behind the science. and it was only after scrutiny for a month that they said, you know what? the 3 feet's okay. why all of a sudden is the cdc

so delayed at following the science? they should be on the forefront. >> well, the first suspicion is that politics are involved as tammy sort of alluded to. let me tell you as a reporter if i'm at the white house and i ask the administration a covid-19 question, it's likely that i will be referred to the cdc. but now i'm learning that they're taking their cue from the aft. and so that's a problem in and of itself. and as you point out, listen, i applaud the restraint of parents during this entire pandemic because really the frustration couldn't have been more. but now learning this far into it that the aft and these heavy, you know, lobbying institutions are affecting administration policy, it's really dangerous. and really to go off on a lumbar here to not allude to the last subject, but this is liking asking the administration about

border policy, getting referred to the border patrol and learning that the cartels are influencing their decision making. this is nuts. >> well, and, you know, lawrence, the aft spokeswoman to the new york post said the aft represents 1.7 million educators, health care professionals and public employees who have spent the last 14 months serving on the front lines of the covid-19 pandemic, so naturally we have been in regular touch with the agency setting policies that affect their work and lives including the cdc. lawrence, also someone who you know i have been going to work nearly every single day. i see you traveling all throughout the pandemic reporting. what say you to this quote? >> where were they? [laughter] where were they? i mean, what do you mean they were on the front lines in at your apartment? at your house? i mean, you know i love this story because i love -- [inaudible] when you've got it in writing, things start to make very clear

sense. a few months back the cdc can had made some recommendations that kids should be able to go back to school. right? jen psaki goes in the press briefing room and says, well, you know, she really didn't say that in an official capacity even though you've got the big cdc logo behind her. they start retracting their statements. and who hurts at the end of the day? the kids hurt. i have been against the teachers union for a while because they encourage mediocrity. our kids are not competing on the world stage. we're getting our asses handed to us by china and every other country. but this is a good thing for america, that we're experiencing, because now the teachers union overplayed their hand, and parents got to witness what we've been witnessing, people that are advocates for school choice and reforms in our education system have been witnessing for a long, long, long time. and now parents are seeing the

mental health of their children, they're seeing that their kids may not get scholarships, right? that they may be left behind. i interviewed a parent the other day had a straight a student, all of a sudden her kid's getting fs. and the only thing that changed was he didn't have that interaction. he's a people person. he needs to see his friends, his classmates. but the teachers union, they don't care about that. they claim they're looking out for the best interests of our kids, we know that's not true now. >> you know, lawrence, i had a feeling you'd have an opinion on that. ♪ don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you got til it's gone? ♪♪ >> beautiful shot of lady liberty right there. welcome back to "the big sunday show." south carolina senator tim scott getting a lot of attention for his rebuttal after joe biden's address to congress. this morning he doubled down on his biggest points in that speech. take a listen. >> america's not a racist country. the question is, is there a lingering effect after a couple of centuries of racism and discrimination in this nation? the answer's absolutely. fighting big with ottly with bigotry is hypocrisy. it just doesn't work. >> but the mainstream media doesn't like that, ramping up their attacks. this rant is especially insulting. >> okay. [laughter] let's be clear, tim scott does not represent any constituency other than the small number of

sleepily, slow-witted sufferers of stockholm syndrome that makes conservative white people feel comfortable. to thirsty for white approval, the ability to appease the oppressors all in one speech, that's extreme. though not quite like the domestic violence extremism that the department of homeland security investigating within its own ranks, mind you. but please, senator, say more about how unracist the country is while you trot out that tired line. >> why is the left so against senator tim scott's message? we'll break that down. griff, she talked about the senator being thirsty. the president agreed with senator tim scott on that message. vice president kamala harris agreed with tim scott on that message. he didn't say that there aren't racist elements that may come here and there in the country, he said that the country is not

racist. so if he's thirsty, is the president and the vice president now thirsty as well? >> look, lawrence, you have to go back -- and, tammy and nicole, you may remember this -- this is the thing we saw with clarence thomas, right? this is a refusal on the left to hear any other black voices than the ones that are singing from the liberal sheet of music. and senator tim scott is positioned, i think, right now because of him, because of his leadership on policing in america trying to provide a way. senator scott says himself, will be, they clearly don't want solutions because they're attacking him and not willing to listen to him. now, we'll see if something does come from the efforts he's trying to put forward in police reform, but it is sad to watch the left, it is sad to watch an administration who full well know that they're trying to shut out a conservative voice that is

possibly the best, most likely path to some unity and bringing communities together that they're discarding it. and the host there on msnbc is only fueling that fire of division. and it's honestly, it's amazing that the administration hasn't learned the lessons of the past and is shutting out voices like senator scott's. >> yeah, tammy, you used to be a part of the left. i'm going to tell you right now as a black man on this panel, i'm not going anywhere. i'm going to continue to speak my mind and say whatever the hell i want to say. so, tammy, you were part of the left. this like their typical strategy? what is that -- because it seems that it works a lot of times. >> well, because while they do want to try to move scott a little bit, but really this is a message to their base. this is a message that if you dare -- and this is what's so obscene when we're dealing with the 21st century and minorities in the country.

we have fought for over a couple of hundred years to create more freedom so we could each be ourselves, literally be ourselves. that's what the civil rights movements were about, of course, was the ability to live our lives as we saw fit without hindrances, without someone telling you to do something differently because of how you looked or what color your skin was. so this is really a message to the base that says if you dare to not conform, if you dare to think differently, you're going to be punished. this will be you next time. this is what will happen to you. it's especially strong also in the gay community. when you have communities where that's your family, where it's important and you're going to church or if you're going out at night or with your friends, if it's extended family that you don't want to be shunned. this is the threat to you. and i said -- to shun you. the energy into lying on the left is horrible, but the energy in maintaining the collective is even more so. and that's a what this is.

so it is punishing scott for not conforming and warning everybody else on the left, everyone but especially black americans who are still registered democrats that if you step out of line -- and this is the horror of this message -- if you step out of line, we're going to punish you, we're going to catch you, and we're going to ruin your life. that's what people take from this, and it's horrible, and all of us have got to reject it. and you, by the way, lawrence, every american who simply speaks their mind, regardless of whether you're a republican or a democrat or on which side, is what -- that's the attitude that's going to to save the country and save our dialogue in this nation. >> doc, you're a great message or. you've really broken down this whole covid thing for us. and one of my problems with the republican party because, you know, look, you've got black folks that identify, you look at poll after poll, they're conservative. they take care of their

families, they invest in businesses. but republicans haven't been able to capture that vote as a human, as a doctor that knows how to message things, what do you think they can do better to get more people to be tim scott or kanye or jay-z? >> well, i mean, that is a great question, lawrence and, unfortunately, i think at this point we've gotten to this time where we are creating an entire generation of people who are afraid to speak out, afraid to have any sort of contrarian view. because as we have seen, if that happens, you get canceled. all that is happening with the criticism right now of tim scott, it's proving exactly what he said in that speech. for anyone who actually listened to him, he said what's happening is people are creating problems without solutions. and this criticism from people calling him names like a clown to saying he's thirsty for white approval, i mean, he does not deserve this disrespect. and all they are doing, again, they're creating problems. there's no solution there. he acknowledged the imperfect

history that our country has had. he acknowledged there is still work to be done, but he didn't use the verbiage that fails with their narrative, so they want to make fun of him, and all the best they can do is call him names, and this man is not going to sit down. he keeps rebutting them and, to be honest, he sounds a heck of a lot smarter than they do. >> i tell you what, i don't think we've seen the last of senator scott. i would encourage people though because there's this attempt to distance from my family over politics. don't let them get to you. still ahead, a top democratic strategist tells his party, stop being to woke. his warning to democrats, next. ♪♪ good morning, mr. sun. good morning, blair. wokeness may cause democrats to lose big in 2022 and '24. democratic strategist james carville says the party should speak, quote, the language of the people as opposed to using catch phrases like defund the police. >> in politics you should speak the language of the people, you should speak clear, direct english and address people as they address each other, not like the humanities department at ham herself wants -- amherst wants you to address people. people who want -- don't want to live like this, scared to address an issue because it might come out the wrong way. and no one is using their language except for, you know, some of our people on television if you go to -- and if you need wokeness, just go listen to npr. >> do you believe he even has to say that? look, not all workers agree, especially at one software company.

the daily ware reporting one-third of base camp employees quit after founders asked them to focus on work, not wokeness. now, i have to tell you, it's about 60 employees they have, so 20 people left. but this is what we were discussing in the last segment, car april is -- carville is someone who recognizes the danger and is willing to say so, is willing to say, stop it, because this -- we did, there was a blowout, a red blowout, you know, from the, with the exception of the top in the '20 election, that there was, you know, states were flipped, we gained seats in the house. that was a statement. and americans tend to be quiet. so 2022 is going to be, i think, a very powerful election. griff, you hear carville saying, a warning bell being cassandra on top of the mountain. is this something that people are going to listen to?

because it's not just him that recognizes that this is out of control. >> if you're a democrat in washington, d.c., you'd better be listening. look, that's the raging cajun. he may be one to have greatest political strategists of my lifetime. just ask bill clinton about that. and the reason why he's saying speak the language of the people, not the language of defund the police, is because he's sitting in new orleans. he's talking to real americans -- >> yeah. >> and with such narrow margins, one seat in the senate, a handful in the house, in giving the power to particularly the progressive left, he knows, he knows that this is going to cost elections. and it's why you're seeing, when we played in the first session. mazie hirono talking about the border, henry cuellar, democrat border member of congress, they know that people -- >> they do. >> -- across the country are not okay with this. >> now, nicole, again, it was about 20 employees over at base camp left out of 60. in that case, those are 20

people who decided that their opinions were why base camp existed and they wanted to, i don't know, maybe burn it up from the inside out. you know, there's places those people can get jobs like, as an example, yes, the npr, perhaps the government. this is not what businesses need to be doing. do you think businesses need to worry about that, and do you think the base camp a approach was right? >> you know, i actually really do. and i can tell you that a lot of businesses are trying to e integrate some of this wokenessing into things that they're requiring for their employees. there are a lot of hospital systems that are requiring a ton of continuing medical education or continuing education on certain issues that really don't seem to have anything to do with medicine, but they're trying to fall in line with some of these popular opinions right now. and, you know, i can tell you it's interesting, but again, we have to focus more on progress and not on these nonsensical issues in the sense that it is possible to support the lgbtq
