story. gop support for spending plan this as the administration is on defense over a disappointing job's report. mark meredith is live at the white house with more, good afternoon, mark. mark: mike, good afternoon to you, republicans and business interest groups that say incentivizing people not to go back to work is all the government's fault with increased unemployment benefits. today the white house is pushing back saying it's the coronavirus and its impact on families that are keeping many americans home. >> unemployment insurance has been a lifeline, a survival, lifeline for so many americans. the number 1 reason now that people aren't going back to work is what you said, fear or they can't find child care or schools are still closed. mark: labor department report that is employers 266,000 jobs, estimates were much higher. they thought they were getting a million. unemployment jumping to 6.1% and

government revising report fewer jobs created than originally reported. several businesses tell fox, biggest challenge is finding workers. some republicans want congress to cut off ten happened unemployment benefits early before they are set to expire in september. the chamber of commerce say it is problem is obvious. they put out a statement saying the disappointment job's report makes it clear that paying people not to work is dampening what should be a stronger job's market. now this week the president is expected to focus heavily on economic agenda. he's due to meet with 6 republican senators to talk about infrastructure spending. this is going to be a big test to the white house to see if they're able to move forward with a bipartisan bill. republicans have made it clear that they are all for fixing things like roads, bridges and airports, they don't want to spend $2 trillion, they want to spend far less. the white house says it wants to hear ideas. the president will hear for himself and as for president biden he remains at camp david. mike: thanks a lot.

joining me you new york congressman, foreign affairs committee. lee zeldon, welcome. >> good to be with you. mike: how do you expect job's report falling below expectations? congressman: it was just that much of an unbelievable report and what it really needs to serve as is a reminder as policymakers go forward in what the right policies should be implemented in the coming weeks and months. right now there are multiple bills in congress coming from proposals from president biden and the administration from congressional democrats looking towards increasing corporate taxes, looking at increasing individual taxes, so maybe they need to hit the pause button there. but also as your reporting indicated and what i'm hearing from business owners of all sizes, our job creators are

talking about their difficulty to bring people back to work because of able-bodied adult who is have available jobs chose to go stay at home because they make more money by the government to stay at home rather than going back to work. that policy has to get reversed. so we can't just take in this report and do nothing and we certainly can make things worse. this is an opportunity for us to turn it around and the biden administration and congressional democrats could be part of that solution, step 1 is getting the able-body adults back into the workforce rather than paying to stay home. mike: they are schedule today run through labor day and if there could be disappointing jobs reports coming in the summer. are you confident that you can basically turn off the spicet on enhanced unemployment benefits and beyond? >> right now it seems that congressional democrats are going along with the

activist-base within their party across the country. not only supporting these benefits, extending them, there are many in favor of increasing them, that's the wrong way to go. so i don't have a high level of confidence right now that congressional democratic leadership understands the stakes here and the consequences of it. but i will tell you, i've heard from so many business owners that they -- it's not that they aren't able-bodied adults in their community that fill the positions, they are just getting it shot straight to them that they are not returning to work because they get paid more to stay at home. mike: massive story that broke this weekend, ransomware attack on the eastern united states, what's your assessment? congressman: this is very concerning. cybersecurity is a big threat of our infrastructure, our way of life, the businesses large and small. individuals are often targeted. hopefully this is something that can be addressed in the coming

days, not weeks. we -- what i'm hearing is that we will not see an impact on supply and cost as long as this is just a matter of days to resolve. it's going to be important for the government to be working with the company to not be -- we don't want to see our u.s. businesses, our infrastructure where you have these important partnerships, private businesses to be paying off ransom. we have to upgrade the infrastructure. we have to be more proactive in detection and we also have to increase our ability on the offense, the best cyber defense is a cyber offense. mike: i want to squeeze one more. published report that says chinese scientists 5 years ago talked about weponizing sars, 5 years before the covid crisis. your thoughts, sir? congressman: i just saw that report as well. first time i'm seeing it.

pennsylvania congressman matt cartwright. congressman, welcome. happy mother's day. mike: thank you, sir. you heardyour colleague lee zele job's report falling report? >> what we have to based on decision and facts and get to the bottom of what the problem is. on the one hand, you have business owners complaining about unemployment compensation causing the problem. many of whom are the same business owners who want to abolish unemployment in generally. on the other hand, we have covid stillgoing on, we are tala third of americans still fully vaccinated and if you think about who is not vaccinated right now, it's the younger people. we were smart about it. we were vaccinating the people who were most at risk for diego and we let the youngest people till the end.

but those are the same people that work as servers and bust boys in restaurants and if you want to talk about adeck notes, we have to be careful talking about anecdotes. mike: right. congressman: the coral of anecdote is not data. we ought to be focusing on the data. if you want to talk anecdotes. you think about them. they are the ones coming into contact with t most with other people and they're also the least likely to already be vaccinated. so you want to study, what is it? are we going to go with the certain business owners' opinions that it's -- that it's unemployment compensation causing the problem or are we going to believe in the american

worker and his and her work ethic, dignity of work that joe biden talks about? i don't think we want to jump to any conclusions. myself, i think we want to give it some more time in this country to get past the pandemic and make sure we are out of it and it's still out there and people are still dieing from it, mike. mike: quick follow-up from that one, if there's disappointing jobs reports in the coming months, are you willing to consider turning off the spicket in terms of unenhanced unemployment benefits in the fall? >> we have to keep in mind all solutions. who is setting the bar? who is setting the expectation? and in march we had a million jobs, we have about 8 million jobs to go and we will get there, you know, we have to believe in ourselves in this country and we have to believe that the workers do want to work. there was a yale study speaking of data last year that showed that the people coming off of

exclusive interview with facebook oversight board michael mcconnell. that's 2:00 p.m. eastern time. ♪ ♪ ♪ live pictures coming from our drone right above the united states southern border as local and federal officials say they are still struggling to handle the surge of migrants coming into the country. bill live with a look of what's happening there. >> it's been a busy day at the del rio specter, hot spots in terms of activity. we have witnessed more than 50 migrants apprehended and in the sector alone, last week, they are averaging more than 700 apprehensions every single day. but i want to pull up video if we can show you what we just shot you right where we were standing an hour, this was a massive group of migrants who crossed the rio grande.

one of the largest groups they've seen come across at one single time. many of them had small children with them, infant children. they were crossing when the river is shallow and not deep and much safer. we had a chance to talk to some of the folks as they were waiting to be processed by the local deputies waiting for border patrol to arrive and all of them told me they are from venezuela, take a listen. [speaking in spanish] >> and i also asked any of them to raise if they had family in america and about -- half of them raised their hand, so that was a huge group. they ended up telling it was 45 venezuelans and one colombian. again, that's just right here in the del rio sector today. let's take a look at what is going on in the morning south of where we are. this is video from fox drone crew in rio grande valley. this is in la jolla, texas.

a group of migrants after they crossed the border, all the migrants were from triangle countries, honduras, el salvador, guatemala. so that's directly south of us. then if we talk about the sector north of us, take a look at this map right here. this is the border patrol's big bend sector. this is north of the del rio sector where we are right now. it's a huge sector. 165,000 square miles and cover 77 counties in texas and the entire state of oklahoma and only have 600 agents to cover the area. if we can pull the video from the big bend sector, they're been seeing a huge spike in apprehensions. the numbers we are looking at are pretty crazy. in march of 2020, they had just about 3,000 apprehensions. one year later, march 2021, that has surged to over 14,000 apprehensions. that is a 365% increase. the local border patrol efficient -- officials down there are seeing a lot more

how it happened. charles watson following the story. charles: good afternoon, mike. trainer bob says more than twice allowed of steroid was found in the system of kentucky derby winner medina spirit following a post-race drug test and we are hearing from churchill dow says it's banning from racetrack in a statement says, quote, failure to comply with the rules and medication protocols jeopardizes the safety of the horses and jockeys. the integrity of the sport and the reputation of the kentucky derby and all who participate, churchill downs will not tolerate. badford is denying any wrongdoing and it's unsure how it could have gotten into the horse's system. >> yesterday i got the biggest

gut punch in racing for something that i didn't do and this is really -- it's disturbing, it's an injustice to the horse. charles: badford says medina spirit's has not been stripped from the crown and the horse is expected to compete at the states in less than a week but with the most recent failed drug test, there are now questions whether that should and will happen. this coming only a few weeks after baford won before arkansas racing commission after suspended 15 days following after horses tested positive for the painkiller. the horses were mistakenly exposed to the drugs. now, as far as medina spirit goes, mike, it could not be stripped of the kentucky derby crown until what's known as a split sample confirms the result of the original test.

than 83%, shooting victims have gone up by more than 78%. yesterday in times square the victims included 3 females, 4-year-old who was toy shopping with her parents. that ended up with her needing surgery last night. a 23-year-old tourist visiting new york from rhode island getting a look at times square and a 43-year-old who was also shot. none of the people knew each other but they were simply walking in the area at the same time. police commissioner shae speaking about empty times square about uptick in crime and pointing to bail reform. >> we had an innocent 60-year-old pushed to traffic and individual immediately arrested by responding police officers. it is the third time, the third time this year already that that individual has been arrested for unprovoked assaults. alex: so they are explaining another innocent victim of a crime yesterday all taking place

within the same day. we've also seen a uptick and in murders and rapes this week. the mayor commenting on everything that took place yesterday and he's thankful that the 3 individuals who were shot will likely recover fully, however, also adding that the nypd is continuing this investigation making sure to bring this person or people who were involved into custody. mike. mike: you could hear the frustration in the police commissioner's voice. alex hogan, thanks very much. the head of nasa criticizing china space program after 22-ton rocket face intoed the indian ocean last night. christina coleman is following all of this for us, hi, christina. christina: out of control rocket slammed into the indian ocean last night and no reports of injuries or damaged property along the way, but the fact that scientists did not know where pieces of the 22-ton rocket would land for days has sparked backlash from nasa.

the rockets debris was spotted blasting through the sky in the middle east until it crashed in the indian ocean last night. the 5b rocket was used to launch first new module of space station last month. usually discarded rocket stages reenter the atmosphere soon after liftoff and normally over water. that clearly wasn't the case here. the rocket went into orbit around earth and covering a huge portion of the planet. scientists say the potential debris north as canada and far south of new zealand. chinese authorities said most of the rocket would burn up during reentry process and uncertainty of how much would be burned up or entering populated area. china did not act responsibly writing, quote, space nations must minimize people and property on earth of reentries

where trump loyalists in state and county republican party apparatus and also in the elections that are going on right now in virginia for governor and elsewhere. it's all about trump. mike: i want to get to another big topic. andrew cuomo losing a top communication's advisers. matt, your thoughts? >> every time they use power to punish political enemies and along those lines, this appears to be discussed, the investigations by the new york attorney general's office as to how the vaccinations were distributed and if some of the allegations prove true, that perhaps vaccinations were distributed in new york based on political favoritism if that were to be the case, then you could look at some real potential legal liability both on civil side and the criminal side which is the sort of things that we saw many years ago when governor chris christie had a

mike: the number of people wounded in the bombing of a girl school in afghanistan now climbing to more than 100. this as the first funerals were held today for the 50 others who were killed in the attack. many of the students were ages 11 to 15. the violence saturday comes as u.s. and nato forces complete their military withdrawal from the country. the taliban is denying responsibility for the attack. pope francis also reacting calling the afghan terror attack, quote, inhumane and offering prayer to the victims during today's sunday blessing. riots spreading through the jerusalem as israeli police clash with protestors at one of the biggest universities in israel.

trey: we did find out today israel's supreme court has delayed a decision set to take place tomorrow that would determine the fate of palestinian families living in the neighborhood. this is one topic among many during the holy month of ramadan that has sparked violence. overnight 90 palestinians were in clashes and police officers heard as well when rocks and stones and objects were thrown at them. take a lack at the scene last night. >> clashes are erupting right now outside of the demascu gate. you can see the police are firing off flash regrades to try to disperse the crowd here. right now israeli security forces are trying to get control of the situation but if last night is any indication it's going to be extremely difficult. thousands of palestinians have streamed out of the mosque and they are here continuing

the last 12 or 16 months you haven't seen it, send us a notice as to why you would like to get together with your mom. the first gentleman that we picked in washington, d.c. that hasn't seen mother for 2 years. she was a retired nurse who heated the call of duty and wanted to be in medical front lines to help people in the early days of the pandemic and risk everything, got covid, got it bad, made it through and the whole family is together right now having brunch still at medium rare, it was amazing to bring them back together. it's the hug, the magic of the hug that we should never underestimate. mike: what about the maryland woman who found her biological mother online? >> this was one -- i closed the book after you get this one, a woman who was 50 year's old. who did one of the genetic

testing that we see about and find biological mom and biological grandmother and never met them. she's 50 and reconnected with her mom and called her up. this was about ten weeks ago. this is brand new. and they have been talking and establishing telephone relationship and finally she said i would love to bring her in for brunch and we -- we called mom and -- and mom said, great, mom was little concerned she didn't have clothes and we gave them a gift card to go shopping for a little mother-daughter bonding for brunch today to help them come together a little bit. that made it all worthwhile. mike: that's beautiful. what about the best friends separated halfway across the country? >> this is reality. these are two moms. by the way, i firmly believe after hearing the stories and i always thought, we had our medical line of defense against covid and moms were the first --
