kids how to think, not what to think. joining me is glenn lowry. thanks for being here. as a lifelong educator how dangerous is it to a young developing mind to be indoctrinated like this? >> it is quite dangerous. we are putting slogans in the head of these kids. we should be teaching young people how to think critically about difficult moral questions, not how to repeat the platitudes that are the currency of the woke political commentary these days. parents are right to push back. todd: let's look at a map where there's intensive pushback, states moving to ban critical race theory or the process may be, red states have done it, the orange yellow states are in the

process of doing it. are we about to become a country divided into two education systems? >> i hope not although education is a local affair and the country is divided around questions of this kind, we will see what happens but again i reiterate parents are right to be pushing back and if they don't our children will be indoctrinated with a destructive way of looking at their own country. todd: how worried are you teaching crt instead of stuff kids should be learning in school will hurt competitiveness with the rest of the world? >> i am african-american and concerned about young black children, if you teach kids they are perpetual victims you robbed them of the agency they need to improve their lives.

we are in a country where everything is possible for young people regardless of their color and if you teach white kids they are the beneficiaries of some intrinsic racial privilege you undermine their ability to realize their full human potential as well. the world is a highly competitive place, we should doing reading, writing and arithmetic, teaching kids how to compete and the challenges of the future and not indoctrinating them with political slogans. todd: how did we get in such a short period of time? >> got to think about summer of 2020, protests against policing and racial discrimination and systemic racism in the country, got to think of what is going on in the politics of the country in reaction against donald trump's view of the world and people organizing against that and bringing it into our schools

>> we have an administration that refuses to accept or acknowledge and lead this issue, the border security issue on the southwest border. in my sector of arizona this is a national security public safety issue, 60,000 get aways, people seen on cameras that got away from border patrol and my office that are somewhere in the country, 60,000. that is a lot of people. our camera alone, we have a camera system in cochise county, entry, smuggling, 10 times higher this year than last year. 11,000 illegal entries, 800 pounds of illicit drugs, 38 smugglers off the camera system. it is frustrating, we hear the secretary of homeland security say we have control of the border.

jillian: are they getting away because you are stretched too thin or it is that reassignments? what is the problem? >> the biggest problem is we deployed agents off the border into processing and childcare which leaves the border wide open, the cartel stepping up, watching this, smiling at it and exploiting the southwest border. jillian: the migrant encounter rises in april and it is the highest monthly total it has been as you see on screen in 20 years. the border drug seizures in april of 2021, more than 31,000, sentinel and increase compared to april of 2020. those numbers are staggering to look at and one of your deputies received a death threat from the cartel. is that right? >> correct. the reason we have death threats

brought in as a result of the cartel threatening to kill one of my deputies, they are emboldened by this because they feel they can be. this president and this administration to step up, support border patrol, sheriff and communities on the southwest border, disheartening, disingenuous to say the border is controlled. jillian: how did the folks in your area feel? >> the biggest problem for me is keeping control in our communities. they are on edge. what is hard and so disappointing, we are doing everything we can in arizona. our governor, our attorney general, mayors, sheriff's stepping up on this to secure the border. no response from washington dc.

here to react is washington state representative jim walsh. your rebuttal to what you heard from the governor. >> he is wrong. be careful when a gun control person says there crazy idea is common sense. it is not. this bill he signed into law is unconstitutional. it violates the washington state constitution and the federal constitution. our state constitution is stronger on gun rights than the federal. it clearly says the right of an individual citizen to bear arms in defense of himself or herself shall not be impaired. that is stronger language than the second amendment. the governor is simply wrong and this bill, now law, is going to be challenged in court and the court of the citizens of the state of washington.
