>> well, i've had a little bit of time to chill out a little bit. i think it's like this. one, i think it just represents a lot about this administration. it's just kind of tone deaf at the end of the day. was it a bad tweet? no, was it a horrible tweet? no. did she blatantly disrespect the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for this nation which is what this day is about? no. they didn't do anything to put focus on that either. like you said, yes, we got a tweet a little later on, damage control. but even that felt very -- almost like their staffer or somebody on the administration typed it out. there wasn't any real substance. there wasn't any real heart connect todd that. even the -- connected to that. even the president, joe biden, posted a video later on after his stay cool, folks, over the weekend, but it was a very produced, very staged, already prefilmed video of him and a

medal of honor recipient. there doesn't seem to be a whole lot with this administration of real feelings and real interactions. jillian: here's that tweet that you referenced, the second one, the backtracking i guess a little bit. this was on sunday. quote, throughout our history, our service men and women have risked everything to defend our freedoms and our country, as we prepare to honor them on memorial day, we remember their service and their sacrifice. i understand the point that you're trying to make that there wasn't much feeling to it. it didn't feel personal, i guess. i mean, look, you can pick one person and have a picture of them, you know, and show their face and say their name and say thank you for your service and that one person signifies the thousands of others out there and all of the families who are going through the same emotion, right? >> right. exactly. and the president whether it was her or a staffer, someone chose to post a selfie of herself and

the president as well with his stay cool, folks, they chose to post themselves over the weekend. like i said, the whole thing was just tone deaf. absolutely tone deaf. if there's one thing that you have to do as the president and vice president of our country, with memorial day weekend, you have to put attention on the men and women, estimated 1.3 million americans, by the way, who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms here in america. that's the only thing that should be put on, the only attention that should be brought to on this day and on this weekend. todd: republicans tom bought ton and dan crenshaw are looking for military whistleblowers. they say enough is enough, we won't let our military fall to woke ideology. you can submit your story and the complaint will be legally protected and will go to the office, and senator tom cotton.

how crucial is that our military are actual warriors and not social justice warriors. >> i agree with congressman crenshaw and senator cotton. i said this a long time that the military is not a social experiment. the military is here for one purpose, and one purpose only. are there many jobs within the military? absolutely. but the number one job of the united states military is to protect america and to win wars. that's it. that is the de facto do not pass go, do not collect the hundred dollars, that is -- $200, that is the one reason. all those different jobs from cook to navy seals, they all serve that one purpose. we need to focus on what we're actually recruiting for. are we recruiting for people that adhere to a standard that is achieving a standard of being a soldier, airman, marine, sailor? or are we appealing to we just

want this type of person whether they achieve certain standards of war time effort or not? i think we're going down a very dangerous path and so i actually really like this idea, because the military is supposed to be very neutral when it comes in terms of that. had they have one purpose and one purpose only and that's to protect america. jillian: in the 30 seconds we have he remaining, first of all thank you as always for your service to our country. second, what does this day mean to you personally, especially at a time when it feels like things are polarizing and divided on so many issues right now. >> i think memorial day reminds us that we have men and women in our past and we will have them in our future who truly represent the best of america, that understand selflessness to a level that we never truly will. what it's like to truly love the country and the people behind you back home in the country more than you love yourself. our men and women who have

minneapolis up 113%, los angeles up 26%, and baltimore up 7%. your reaction to this? i mean, i know that you've been saying this has been needing to happen and they should have never been defunded in the first place. >> first of all, god bless all the veterans on this memorial day and their families who also paid the sacrifice. god bless each and every one of them. look, i wrote an op-ed back in august of last year when they started talking about defunding the police, i said when you defund the police, for every dollar you take away from law enforcement equals less law enforcement. whether it's less officers on patrol, less overtime, less vehicles on the street, it's going to result in a larger response time. so every dollar you take away from law enforcement means lessen forcement. it only makes sense, it's simple matt and i think the mayor -- math and i think the mayors recognize it's a bad move. we told them it was a bad move. he they listened to the

progressive left and listened to defunding the police. 21 officers he protect the family 24/7. he took protection away from the communities, not from himself. aoc and others in congress did the same thing. they didn't take away their protective details. they're all for taking away protective details for the community. jillian: the here and now as you referenced equates to lessen forcement on the streets. but when you talk about the future of policing, if you're defunding the police departments, doesn't that impact the quality of the training which then goes into how -- especially some of these young men and women, how they're going to learn how to do their job which impacts as they go forward the rest of their life in policing. >> absolutely, jillian. it's a good point. we talk about the need for more training. when i was i.c.e. director, i

had $8 billion budget. that sounds like a lot of money. you have to sit down, what can i do with that money and more importantly, what can't i do. training is always sacrificed. you've got to have pensions, overtime, put gas in cars, keep the lights on the building, you've got payroll. a lot of things fall by the wayside. training many times falls by the wayside. police officers in the departments need more money for training. we've seen that in the last year, year and-a-half. hopefully, these cities, these progress ever mayors are finally seeing that their officers need more training, they need more money and more equipment. one more thing. giving money isn't enough. for the mayors and city councilmen who threw the officers under the bus, who showed zero respect for the men and women who put their lives on the line every day, they need to have a new respect for the men and women that serve. they aren't making a lot of money. they put their lives on the line. it's ridiculous what happened to the men and women in law enforcement. hopefully the pendulum is

swinging back and people realize they're american patriots and heroes and deserve our support. a few bad cops don't make the whole institution bad. jillian: why do you think this is happening now? why do you think some cities are providing more money now? >> because crime rate is through the ceiling for the cities. it's not just funding the police, it's the bail reform law in new york. i gave a speech in new york last year, with a room full of police chiefs and prosecutors, every one of them thought the bay reform law was irresponsible. less law enforcement, it's a perfect storm for crime rates to rise. jillian: tom homan, thank you for waking up early, good to see you this morning. >> thanks for having me. todd: a state trooper blindsided by a drunk driver. watch. >> sterling 713, i've just been

daughter's bathroom. so i don't have any money. i had a bike, got some money out of it. todd: putting aside the fact that you gave so damn much for our country, it's like okay, something i love which is a bike, it's like i've got to get rid of it. my daughter needs something. >> everything i do is to try to provide them a good life. gives me purpose. todd: what would you like the general public understand about what these guys went through. >> they did it because they love the country. they're all volunteers. if we don't take care of veterans, we're not going to have a strong military. >> as americans who lead comfortable lives, we need to know what other people are doing for us and what they're dealing with when they come home. >> clearly, rick is somebody who served his country and had some struggles and challenges and he has a passion for motorcycling and we wanted to put him back on the road. todd: the first recipient, this is your hog. >> yes, sir. todd: what was it like when you
