newsom shot him twice. he is expect his recover, two of the joggers were shot but not injured. a man was seriously injured when newsom allegedly hit him with his car. police say newsom may have been suffering from mental health issues. >> the uptick of violence, dozens injured in major cities across the country. todd: cities reports that double-digit increase in shootings this year. >> as we head into summer, another violent weekend in chicago with 55 shootings, 5 people killed compared to the same time last year. the windy city reporting 33% more shootings with chicago police superintendent blaming most of the weekend's to violence in the city's gangs. >> much of the violence we see in chicago is about the gang culture's revenge, retaliation and street justice.

trump. i know you are probably receiving questions and criticism with people wondering are you making this switch because you're interested in the political aspects of running for another term, what do you say to that? >> the switch was done after my reelection so it wasn't based on running for office or staying in office. the sheriff in virginia is four year term. i easily could keep my mouth shut, say nothing and go on for four years and not have to worry about anything, this had nothing to do with the election or reelection. it is the right thing to do because of what i feel was an attack on law enforcement that won't help our community. todd: let's focus on the task of being a sheriff because of the from the police effort, how tough is it been for you to hire officers who want to join the

sheriff's department? >> it has been difficult. i'm getting good law enforcement officers, sometimes it is hard anyway. now, to ask these young men and women, to go into a field that so many things are going on and feels like euro government is against you makes it even more difficult to go through the hiring process, to get good men and women on the streets. jillian: look at these virginia police reforms, then includes banning no knock warrant, limiting user chuckled, mandating racial bias, de-escalation and crisis intervention training, limiting offenses for which officer can conduct traffic stops, defunding departments deemed to have engaged in biased policing. all of that being said are there some reforms you agree with and think perhaps could be good for us and of those we listed which do you have a hard time with and make the job harder? >> law enforcement throughout the years, i've done this over

30 years, we've always seen reform and advances so look at where we are now in law enforcement compared to when i started many years ago, there's been a lot of reforms that are good. law enforcement reform continues to change but when things are going on that you know is not going to be good for law enforcement were victims of crime and the biggest one is the defunding the police and it does come down to you get what you pay for whether it is schoolteachers or any profession you look at if you want to pay schoolteachers bottom dollar, take away training, take away money for what they need in the classroom what type of education? say with law enforcement, and no

he was fine and i was even being denied a end of life visit. my father was struggling to breathe. i got this photograph and i want to come up and see him and, with jfk medical center, he was modeled and unconscious when he was admitted and died within 3 and half hours. jillian: what do you miss about your parents? >> got to be routines ago visit. they used to hear the lady barbara play the piano. and they were not able to walk very much.

the vice president doesn't think it is important to listen to the people dealing with the problem every single day and as a leader and former mayor i know that is what you need to do, get on the ground, talk to the people dealing with the problem. to get to the root causes of the problem and stop the stem of the immigration crisis. todd: i understand why kamala harris's words in the democratic primaries were much different than her words yesterday. during the primary, everybody coming yesterday don't come. what she got to the pinnacle of being the vice president of the united states, why did she wait until now to shift her tone and tell people not to come? why did she do this in the previous 78 days she was named border czar or whatever she is named? >> the president of the united states told people to come, we

will give you free healthcare, change all these policies that really worked under the trump administration and gave the green light to thousands, hundreds of thousands of immigrants to come across the border. for her to say not to come is hypocritical. going against what the president wanted by his actions, his words were the things that caused the crisis to begin with. the guatemalan president said it is what you are saying that is causing this crisis, that is why people are leaving, you invited them to come in. that is the root cause of this. how do we stop it? listen to customs and border protection agents. they know how to stop it, how to deal with it. restore trump administration policies that were working but anything with trump on it must be wrong so we will reverse anything that has trump on it and now we are paying a price. jillian: something marco rubio said, quote, the argument from the left is this country is a

free speech being hampered over the last year iowa college students with new free-speech training and resources this fall, the university border region decided to take action to protect the first amendment. the chair of the education committee joins us now. how is this training going to work? >> that is yet to be seen. they are trying to find someone to provide training. what they are finding as we are the first in the country so they are having trouble trying to find companies that can help with that. todd: take a look at these numbers. student seeing free-speech as less pure since 2016, 70% in 2016, down 64%, 2017, 2019 all the way down to 59%. how bad did it get that you felt you needed to do this? >> this past summer there were

three incidents, three public universities in i. one high profile incident at each university. it made us realize we had to do something for our students. todd: are you worried that in some way the left will co-opt this for their own purposes? >> that is the thing about free speech. it protects both sides, left, right, everybody. that is part of free-speech. that is possible but it protects everybody. todd: as a society how did we get here? >> good question. we've seen it on our universities where students, mostly conservatives are being may be stifled, not being allowed to say what they want to say. how we got there i don't know. that is a bigger societal problem but what we are trying to do in iowa is make sure

jillian: welcome back. shootings are soaring across the nation. dozens rocking cities like miami portland over the weekend claiming several lives. todd: with police already bracing for a violent summer crime surge stoking new fears about liberal leaders continue to push progressive policies. here to weigh in is gianno caldwell. how bad could it get this summer in our nation's cities? >> good morning. thank you for having me. if the latest fox news poll is any indication with 73% of americans believe that crime has gotten even worse in 2021 than it was in 2020, i think we are well on our way to have a summer that's perhaps like any other. if you look at chicago as an example, chicago sometimes reports that there has been over 1400 shootings already outpacing last year's count by 100. and this weekend alone there were 60 people shot including an

11-year-old shot in the back. this defund the police movement have made matters worse. progressives pushing this false narrative that all police officers are bad and all you have to do usurp their funding and everything go will be okay isn't paying dividends at all. it's become an absolute disaster. look at new york a billion dollars defunded from police department. shootings are up 166%. look at minneapolis, they defunded there and what happened? homicides up 60% and not enough officers to solve the crimes because they don't have the resources. 63 out of the top 66 jurisdictions, police jurisdictions have seen increase of at least one crime. things aren't getting better they are actually getting worse. it's time to put down the rhetoric and start supporting police officers and police reforms. that's what's necessary for this moment. jillian: it's awful what's going on out there. you want to defund some of our

trust in politicians. what does this mean gianno? >> you know what? it was something that i talked about when i co-hosted this weekend's big show, i will tell you, we as a country, so many individuals have put their faith in people like dr. anthony fauci who is a medical expert. is he a government employee. people begin to look at him like he was jesus christ himself trusting absolutely everything that he said even though he was giving advice that was contrarian to something he might have said two or three weeks ago. not only that you saw other medical experts that provided a different take than him. we are talking about legitimate medical experts. not people that got their degrees from places you heard from. people world renown. people called them crackpot trump conspiracy theories. people began to believe that we come to find out a lot of these individuals happen to be correct in their analysis.
