turning point usa, charlie hurt. one of the msnbc contributors going out after she said she saw pickup trucks waving flags, suggesting it's a threat to our democracy. >> the reality is here that we have a large percentage of the american population, i don't know how big it is, but we have voters who continue to believe that their rights as citizens are under threat by simple virtue of having to share the democracy with others. i think as long as they see americanness as the same, as one with whiteness, this is going to continue. we have to figure out how to get every american at the table. but how to separate americanness from whiteness. until we can confront that and

peter strzok, cnn pond and saying, we cannot locate countries on the map and joe biden saying if you open them, you're a neanderthal. >> i think this individual works with "the new york times" and i think she's making way too much. trying to just sound intelligent. a couple of points, symbols matter. a nation has a shared history and culture and tradition. when i see the american flag, i see that flag that was triumphantly and heroically, i see a flag that where we had hundreds of thousands of veterans that sacrifice their lives. i see a flag that has been a beacon for liberty all over the world. it means something similar and different, but the unifying principle is that were made in the image of god regardless of skin color and regardless of

your personal beliefs, but this country has worked because that transcends all of those pre-existing tribalism that we will get back into. the second thing, there is an incentive structure to be mad about nothing at "the new york times." the business model to find hate where it doesn't exist and ignore it where it does. i want to get back to a place where we can agree that flying the american flag is generally acceptable. if someone is not doing that to protect a racial stereotype. >> what is it about the flag that so triggering for people these days? >> i don't know. i would encourage them to go travel. when i go to costa rica, all i see are flags because people are stoked about where they live. people are excited. it's independence day on

july 4th and people are desperate to celebrate independence with friends and family members. maybe people don't equate the flag with whiteness, maybe they have freedom and liberty. she should sit down and have a conversation because maybe her interpretation is different from someone else's interpretation. having joy and pride in where you live, that's a good thing. even though your candidate didn't win, the fact they are still waving the flag says you believe in this country. you also believe in the constitution. one of the first things is freedom of speech and that is what people are doing. people like her would like to be the speech police and take down those flags and reeducate people so they only express the correct symbol. >> if she's in this chamber, i
