spice girls by name. jillian: good morning. you're watching "fox & friends first" on this monday northern. i'm jillian mele. todd: i'm todd piro. let's get to it. in a few hours, president biden set to meet with nato leaders in brush he'll. jillian: the meeting with -- brussels. jillian: the meeting will focus on afghanistan and cyber security. benjamin hall joins us live with more on what to expect. benjamin, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, todd and jillian. there's no doubt that the relationship between the u.s. and nato is going to be incredibly different under president biden. president trump pushed them to reach a 2% minimum spending of gdp on their military and in doing so he got $130 billion a year from the organization. you can see the kind of relationship president biden will have with them will be less confrontational. he has declared his unwavering commitment to nato. one of the key issues on the agenda will be how to repurpose nato to counter not only russia but the growing threat from china. the other topic will be the

withdrawal of troops from afghanistan. other nato members wanted to leave a presence there. president biden is going to have reassure them they'll be able to combat any terrorist threat. they'll be discussing an increasingly aggressive russia, including the buildup of troops in eastern europe and also major cyber attacks. yesterday president biden said he was open to a deal on exchanging cyber criminals and agreed that relations with russia were at a low point. >> let me make it clear, i think he's right, it's a low point. it depends on you how he respond to acting consistent with international norms which in many cases he has not. >> reporter: and covid still very much on the agenda. both the recovery as well as its origins. the final statement from the g-7 yesterday called for china to be more transparent and the world health organization chief also admitted the lab leak theory still cannot be ruled out. so a big series of meetings today for president biden, look ahead to that one with president

erdogan, used to be an ally, he's moved increasingly towards russia. but everyone with their eyes on the putin meeting on wednesday, president biden saying he won't have a press conference side-by-side with him as president trump did, saying he didn't see the benefit. todd and jillian. todd: benjamin hall live for us in brussels. benjamin, thank you. jillian: secretary of state antony blinken is calling for more accountability in the investigation into the origins of covid-19. telling fox news the world health organization's probe was highly deficient. >> the w.h.o., you're right, the first study that they put out was highly deficient. the leaders of the g-7 had come together insisting that china cooperate with the phase 2 study to get to the bottom of what happened. that's not enough. jillian: secretary blinken ebbing koas the g-7 leaders, saying it's important for china to be transparent and work with the international community. florida governor ron de santis says it's about time the world puts pressure on china to hold

the ccp accountable for what he is calling a coronavirus coverup. >> this origins of covid, this is such an astounding coverup, one of the biggest coverups we've ever seen in terms of what they did with the gain of function research, understanding that these researchers had been infected in the fall of 2019 and then to cover it up for months, they caused immense damage throughout the world by allowing this virus to be unleashed on the rest of the world and so to be that differential to china, i don't think that's what the american public is looking for. i think they want to see a policy from the united states that's more assertive against china. they're an economic competitor but there also a threat in terms of what they're trying to achieve militarily. jillian: as you recall, president trump and former secretary of state mike pompeo urged an investigation into covid origins and initially the

mainstream media dismissed the wuhan lab leak as a conspiracy theory. todd: turning to a fox news alert, georgia police fatally shoot a gunman they say shot a cob county police officer. that officer was responding to reports of a domestic dispute yesterday afternoon. the suspect started firing and hit the officer in the chest. the officer was wearing a bulletproof vest. he was taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries and is expected to fully recover. police have not identified the suspect. they say no other officers were injured. jillian: an off a duty police officer was killed in seattle while helping people in a car crash. then the personal car of the five year veteran of the force was stolen from the scene. >> out of a sense of duty, the officer who had just finished their shift stopped to assist in a collision. while rendering assistance, the officer was struck by another vehicle. jillian: police say the fallen officer's car was found abandoned later in the day. they are looking for suspects in

the crime. a south carolina community in shock after the mother and son of a prominent family are shot dead. todd: police confirm the deaths are being investigated as a double homicide. ashley strohmier here with what we know. this is one of the more bizarre stories we've heard in a while. >> right now, there are no arrests in the killings of paul and mattie mordaw. according to local media, paul was shot at least twice with a shotgun while his mother mattie was also shot. investigators are reportedly considering the possibility that paul was the target of an attack and mattie was killed by happenstance. the killings came just days after paul attended a court hearing for a 2019 boating accident that left a 19-year-old girl dead. he was facing felony counts for boating under the influence. police have not said whether the killings are related. former homicide detective brian foley says police won't ignore

the revenge angle but warned evidence could be pretty hard to find. take a listen. >> usually, the killer has very little contact with the person he's seeking revenge on. there's not a lot of phone calls, social media exchange. it's usually a type of situation where they study the victim and seek their moments and they attack. >> the girl's family who is webbed in civil lawsuits with the murdaw's released a statement saying having suffered the devastating loss of their own daughter, they pray the family can find some level of peace from this tragic loss and they would like the family and community to know their thoughts and continued prayers are with the murdaws. they were laid to rest on friday. a friend of the family will be on "fox & friends" next hour so be sure to stay tuned for that. back to you guys. jillian: thank you so much. todd: now to the border, where do governors are calling for help. texas governor greg abbott and

arizona governor asking for resources to help fortify the border. they have sued the biden administration for immigration policies. they have encountered nearly 900,000 migrants at the border this fiscal year, the most since 2006. this year is expected to surpass that number. jillian: today merrick garland will meet to discuss leak investigations the doj carried on their recorders. the meeting will include cnn, the new york times and the washington post. this comes after the department vowed to stop secretly collecting reporters' communication logs. the new york times reports the doj subpoenaed don mcgahn's information. todd: let's head to the tracks, the racetrack is back where kyle larson won big bucks at the

austin, texas, savannah, georgia, cleveland, ohio, and chicago all saw mass shootings in the span of 24 hours. todd: the shootings left five dead, more than 35 injured. savannah's police chief joins us to react to the spike in gun violence across the u.s. thanks for being here. let's take a look at these numbers, and this is just plain sad. chicago, one dead, nine injured, savannah, one dead, eight injured. dallas, five injured and austin, texas, 14 injured. the experts said it would be bad as the temperature rose. is it worse than expected even before we hit summer? >> well, good morning, todd and jillian. i can tell you, we did not expect what we experienced on friday night. this is a total surprise to us. our numbers are actually one dead and seven injured from our incident. very tragic, very disturbing, very alarming situation that we had here and we're working through this investigation right now. jillian: what do you think is

leading up to this? look, i know there's a lot surrounding the conversation around what happened after the death of george floyd with police officers being called to be defunded all across the country. we're seeing a rise in retirements. we'll get to that in a second. what do you think ultimately is the reason for this violence that we're seeing, the increase in it? >> well, i have to tell you he locally here in savannah we're looking at four things we think are contributing to gun violence, what we saw on friday night the confrontations and altercations between individuals that are ending in gun violence. drug sales and drug purchases, also gang related activity and then with the court system that was shut down for quite some time, we have people who are out and about, who were witnesses, who are being retaliated against and some of them are retaliating against others. todd: more numbers for you. this is shooting incidents, atlanta up 40%, la, 59%, new

york city, 68% and portland, that whopping 120% there. for those of us that don't live in these liberal cities, is the answer quite frankly to not go to these liberal cities, even though this is the summer travel season and a lot of those cities are places where people like to travel. >> well, i can't speak for other cities, i can tell you savannah is wide open. we're a welcoming city. we're a great tourist town. we want people to continue to come and visit us and we want to make sure we maintain a safe environment here. we still have a relatively low crime rate here in savannah. i don't want this one incident to cast the entire city in a negative light and people still continue to come and people still continue to enjoy a great time and a great city. jillian: i referenced this, the rate of retirement in the year since george floyd, it's up 45% compared to the previous year. are you seeing that in the members that work for you, the numbers of your police form that

are people are either retiring early or contemplating retiring early and what do you say to your officers to keep their morale up during a time that is so difficult to be a cop right now? >> well, it's a great question. i mean, we're not seeing a lot of separations from the department. i've got a sworn staff of about 536 officers. right now i'm down just over 40 officers. we've got two academy classes coming up. we anticipate filling all those vacancies before the end of the year. but as far as officers' morale, we just continue to encourage them to continue to go out, continue to go out on a daily basis and continue to do the great job that they continue to do every day in going out and protecting our great community. todd: chief royal minter, we appreciate your time this morning. thank you, sir. >> thank you very much. jillian: it is 18 minutes after the hour. parents are outraged after holiday names are canceled off the school calendar, calling on

more. cheryl, good morning. cheryl: good morning to both of you. alaska, iowa, missouri and mississippi ended the extra $300 on top of regular unemployment money, affecting 340,000 workers, the first of 25 republican-led states that announced plans to end the pandemic era assistance which had led to labor shortage in the country. senator lindsey graham telling tray gowdy this was an obvious result. >> if you pay somebody $23 an hour not to work they'll take you up on it. i don't blame the people not going back to work, i blame government for creating an incentive. you shouldn't get a pay raise in unemployment. cheryl: the next few weeks we'll see other states ending the program. american workers will want to return to work. todd: we think. meantime, a major vaccine ruling. cheryl: a texas judge tossed a lawsuit brought against texas

methodist hospital, employees suing over the mandate that workers should be vaccinated. a judge ruled that in the claim the vaccines were experimental and dangerous, that was the employees side of it, the plaintiffs. the judge said you know what, that's irrelevant in all of this. jillian: i don't know why people would want to watch us ride a roller coaster but if people want to watch us, that we go do it. cheryl: you just wait, jillian. this is the world's tallest roller coaster, it is ready to go at six flags, new jersey. the jersey devil goes up to 58 miles per hour with a 130-foot drop. it sits 13 stories high, takes you over 3,000 meters of track. it was a-- feet. excuse me. it was announced back in 2019. but the opening was delayed due to the pandemic, guys.

want ilhan omar stripped of her committee assignments. omar wrote a tweet that many saw as an effort to equate the u.s. and israel with terrorist groups like hamas and the taliban. now, several gop house members want consequences for house speaker nancy pelosi and this is what they wrote. it is the responsibility of the party's leadership in the house of representatives to hold accountable egregious words and actions made by members of the party. we wholeheartedly request that you love up to your word and swiftly remove congresswoman omar from her committee assignments. eventually she clarified her remarks. this created a riff within the party. house speaker nancy pelosi is defending omar. >> let me just say this. we did not rebuke her. we thanked -- acknowledged that she made a clarification. before we go too far down this path, congresswoman omar is a valued member of our caucus.

a federal takeover of u.s. elections. todd and jillian. todd: seems like aoc just doesn't understand the pulse of the people. manchin does and manchin understands the pulse of the people in west virginia, the people that vote for him. jillian: more than 30 business owners in baltimore are fed up with crime and are threatening to not pay taxes until the city addresses the chaos there. owner of dog watch tavern joins us live, along with former congressional candidate from baltimore, kim klacik. thank you for being here. appreciate your time. >> good morning. jillian: mark, i'll start with you. i know you've been there for about 15 years and i'm curious you how the city has changed in that time. >> this has been a situation for our south point community and baltimore in general, it's been escalating increasingly over the years. i think it's been at least since 2015, 2016 and when we started to realize there is a real

problem coming and we have been begging and pleading, crying out for help ever since and no one is coming to the rescue and no one is listening. jillian: you feel like you just don't have a voice? >> yeah, it's -- we're trying to play by the rules and do everything the way that we're supposed to, relying on our city and our elected officials, the politicians to come to our aid and nothing is making a difference. it's at least now it seems we've gotten some kind of attention, of people that hopefully can make these changes for us. jillian: here's you among others, the business owners there in baltimore, he demands, picking up trash, enforcing traffic laws and empowering police. the business plan, they would withhold the funds in an escrow account until the city meets the demands. it seems like the demands responsibility asking too much. are they, kim? >> no, not at all. thank you for having me.

it's a basic necessity that you get out of paying taxes. all of those businesses, i think it's 37 total that are putting their money in an escrow account. in baltimore, we have nothing but progressives leading so many areas. we have the mayor who is a progressive and you have the state attorney who is a self proclaimed progressive and up fortunately she's decided not to prosecute crime. all the crimes listed there, it's crimes she basically said are crimes she's not going to prosecute. that's why we have the problems that we see. the important part of this is the fact that the owners are noting 2015 and 2016 when this began. that's when we had the riots in baltimore city and a consent decree took place and we startedville phiing police officers -- started vilifying police officers. they're going to re-fund the police and i hope that brings

relief to business owners. to the businesses across the country that are feeling the heat because of progressives in place, i hope they're taking note. i hope they do the same. i applaud the business owners for what they're doing. jillian: here's what the mayor's office has to say, quote, the mayor shares the frustrations over the violence across the city and ordered the baltimore police department, the department of public works and department of transportation to work collaboratively to address it. we hope that happens. kim, one more question, then i'll end with you, marka. kim, you took the nation by storm when you put out the campaign ad when you were running for office and you were talking about the plight and the struggles and what was going on in the streets of baltimore and you hear business owners like marka who is saying we're asking for help and nobody's listening to us and nobody is helping us. it must be frustrating because this is the fight you've been trying to battle, kim. >> yeah, absolutely. i do, i feel so awful for marka and all the business owners.

right now, the opponent that i had, he could tap federal resources as far as the interim ag right now or even federal resources to come up and do something about the trash pickup or having more patrols or officers patrolling the streets but they don't do that. it's unfortunate. the leaders in baltimore city don't seem to care about the actual constituents. the business owners are saying you know what, we're not going to pay our tax, we put them in the escrow account. now that gets their attention. unfortunately, politicians are all about the money. jillian: i know you say you make yourself a target by speaking out and it gets exhausting. but to that point, why did you decide to speak out now? >> enough is enough. this has gotten completely out-of-hand. we're unable to maintain staff. it's not safe for ourselves, our guests, and our community, our town. how can we expect people to want to frequent us and support us when we can barely keep ourselves safe?

this has gotten out-of-hand. our city has he created a culture of lawlessness. until people are held accountable and there are real and actual consequences that are consistent across the board, there will be no deterrent. this will continue. the city has given this situation just free rein. they have allowed it. they're borderline condoning it. until our officers have some kind of support, backing and some real help here, i don't know what it will take to change this. jillian: we certainly hope you get the change you're looking for. mrka and kim, thank you for joining us. we appreciate it. todd: let's go live to ocean city, a beautiful shot as the sun comes up there with the shoreline. meteorologist janice dean here with the fox weather forecast. while it's beautiful there, we have a situation out west that needs to be monitored. >> you are correct, yes. a quiet weather pattern but we

have incredible heat building across the west. temperatures already 91 in phoenix. we have a zonal pattern which means we don't have too much in the way of big storm systems moving in. we'll have scattered showers along the gulf coast, the upper great lakes and towards the northeast we have a weak system moving into the northwest. the problem is the heat. it's building. it's going to last much of the week and it's really dry. i mean, they're into an epic drought here, extreme drought for all of these regions. when you're dealing with temperatures into the 100-degree range, that's going to be dangerous today and through the workweek. the drought monitor, we have many fires burning across the west. it will be an early fire season and it will last for a few months ahead of us. so that's the big deal across the map today. there's the forecast, 71 in new york with scattered showers across the northeast, the gulf coast as well as the northwest. otherwise, it's just hot. i mean, that's the headline.

we are watching the tropics by the way. but nothing too impressive so i'm not going to show you any of that. okay. and you know what happened this weekend. todd: something very impressive happened. are you ready. a champion was named at the westminster kennel club dog show, wasabi, a 3-year-old pekingese nabbed the top prize. jillian: wasabi will celebrate the win with some filet mignon. did you get to meet wasabi? >> i did not get to meet wasabi. i got to meet dozens of amazing dogs. to be in the actual arena here, i've never been able to do that. but with fox sports and brad there who is amazing, he said, yeah, go ahead and try out the tricks. jillian: you were best in show. >> well, in my own mind. jillian: in our show. todd: the shots were beautiful.
