just seeing everybody doing that. in order to fit in, not being canceled, everybody had to echo whatever they were saying. i think for me to get a good gpa and graduate, i had to really shut up and echo whatever they said. todd: i'm sure you weren't the only one who felt that way. there was one thing that i read that really stood out to me. you say people in america are just dying to give their rights and power to the government. why do you think that is? >> i think it's a question of human nature. obviously i saw how people can be oppressed to the point they don't know they're oppressed. people in north korea, they don't know they're slaves to a dictator. now i came to america, people are talking about rights and talking about their oppression and i was telling them you know

you're oppressed, then you're not oppressed. not knowing is a true definition of oppression. so it was so bizarre that why they're voluntarily trying to give individual liberty away so they can be slaves. jillian: unbelievable. >> and why do they have so much information, what happens with history. people voluntarily choosing this path that they got into their head. north korea we have to do it to survive. i don't get why americans, a lot of americans are choosing this path without any external force. jillian: i think it's important that people know the background of your story and how much you had to go through to come to america. can you tell me about your journey, about how you fled north korea in 2007 at the young age of 13 and what happened after fleeing north korea? >> so north korea is literally the darkest place on earth right

now, in the 21st century they do not even know the existence of the internet. i escaped for a better life. i didn't know what freedom was when i was escaping. i was barely starving. when i went to china to find food, i was sold as a sexual slave at 13 for less than $300. after being a modern day slavery -- this is a thing that breaks my heart. people talk about slavery but they don't want to fight for the slavery that is happening to the current modern people and after three years in china, i literally had to walk across the desert into mongolia and after mongolia i made it to south korea. it was two years of a long journey. people here haven't gone through actually real hardship. they're talking about oppression and i'm like you don't know what

shutdowns and mandates and openings and closings. but again, as always, there's this kind of -- this spigot of conflicting guidelines and messaging. this morning we're not sure, do our vaccinated employees need to mask, not mask. maybe thursday it will be clearer. but it might be june 28th. i have employees going can i take this thing off now, i'm vaccinated. so it's just kind of still the same roller coaster that california put us through for the last 16 months. that being aside, it's really a day to celebrate. we have survived. we have thrived in a way. and we've kept our priorities strong which is keeping our guests safe and our employees safe so we're really, really happy for this day. jillian: i was out there in early march visiting your restaurant, among others. it was a beautiful, sunny day in the mid-70s and there were like three people there. and i was just sitting there thinking my goodness, i mean, this is the ultimate place where

you can sit outside which is what we've been told was the safest thing to do this entire time. i mean, tell me the struggles that you have been through as a business owner for the of last 15 months. >> well, i think, you know, what was really pivotal was the lawsuit that the wine country coalition that we led against the state in january, was really pivotal in bringing to life that there was no data to support that outside dining was not a safe activity and so once the state reopened restaurants for outside dining i think that that was the moment where we really started to move towards where we are now and even though we seem a little late in the game compared to other states in the union, we are finally here. the biggest struggle now is finding employees. we're still not finding those people lining up out the door trying to get jobs even though we pay certainly above average wages in terms of minimum wage and beyond in our state and have offered benefits to our

employees from the dish room to the dining room, there are not people lining up for jobs. we have managers acting as bartenders, doing dual roles because we don't have the people. it's great to see the demand for restaurants. it's great to see that people's innate need to gather is showing through and we're busy. i mean, we are busy and people want to come and that three-person thing you saw back in march, you're not going to see that now. jillian: thank goodness because it is too beautiful there to stay inside. cynthia, thank sow much. i'm so happy -- thank you so much. i'm so happy you're finally at this point. thank you for joining us. let us know how everything goes once you're fully open today. >> thank you so much for having me. jillian: one of those things, todd, it's like -- it was just so beautiful. i was dumb founded thinking how are you not allowed to dine outdoors in this beautiful area with beautiful weather.
